send my soul sky-high when your loving starts

Summary:

Work Text:

There are two things odd about Rosho’s room when they wake up.

One; the bed is cold, which is an odd occurrence given that Rei is a literal human heater, and Sasara…isn’t, but there’s no discernible body heat near them, which is unusual.

Two; it’s way too bright. Rosho prefers the dark and on weekends Sasara and Rei like letting them sleep for as long as possible, so being met with warm light when they open their eyes is decently uncommon. But the door is open, and there’s chatter from down the hall…so, Rosho grabs their glasses from the nightstand and heads into the kitchen to see what’s going on.

When they emerge, Sasara and Rei are bickering in the kitchen, and when Rosho emerges with an…unceremonious groan, two heads whirl around at lightspeed and four bright eyes (if Sasara’s count) stare at him as Sasara practically dives over the kitchen island to hug them. “ROSHO DAYYYY~!”

Rei smiles faintly, but Rosho can barely see him around Sasara, who’s kissing them stupid and eventually they have to nudge him off so they can actually stand again. “G’mornin’.”

“Happy birthday, puddin’.” Rei says, abandoning whatever’s on the stovetop to gently kiss Rosho’s forehead. He must not have had coffee yet; he’s always softer and frankly happier in the mornings like this. It’s a side that neither of them particularly get to see even after they had gotten together, but Rosho’d gladly take seeing this part of their boyfriend over any birthday gift.

“Thanks.” Rosho mumbles with a tired smile, leaning back on their hands against the counter and feeling Sasara snake an arm around their waist to hold them. “Somethin’ smells good.”

“Neither of us can cook for jack shit, but we figured we could team up and make pancakes!” Sasara explains, punctuating it with a clap.

“They’re probably not good.” Rei adds pretty unhelpfully. Rosho laughs softly, resting their forehead on Sasara’s shoulder and moving closer to him subconsciously. None of them are particularly good cooks, but the effort alone is already more than they’d ever ask for.

Birthdays for Rosho as a kid were boring affairs; gifts from their mother were always stationery or something similar meant to help them study harder, and they didn’t exactly have friends to celebrate with. The first real birthday they ever celebrated had been the first year of the original Dotsuitare Hompo, where Sasara had bought them the necklace they still wear to this day.

Then they’d gotten swept up in comedy, and then Rosho had left, and then…well, they’d gone back to not caring about their birthday. At least, until the new Dotsuitare Hompo formed and Sasara was back to being their partner. And Rei, too, liked to get presents for them, even if it wasn’t any special day.

When Rosho blinks back into reality, Rei’s plating the pancakes with a grin plastered on his face, and Sasara’s sitting at the island and tapping his finger to whatever generic pop song the radio’s playing at the moment. The addition of an actual radio to Rosho’s kitchen was Rei’s idea, after he’d practically moved in in the same vein as Sasara. But it’s not like they care, especially not when they catch Sasara dancing along in the mornings or get to listen to Rei’s calming voice sing not-so-quietly to himself on those nights the trio stay in to drink instead of heading to a bar. It’s really the simplest of sickeningly sweet domestic pleasures, and Rosho loves it just as much as they love their teammates.

Rei slides a plate over to Rosho, and just as he’d predicted earlier they’re weirdly misshapen and burnt at the edges, but aside from that they’re actually pretty good and before long Sasara’s gushing about them to Rei with a flick of his wrist and a smile. It’s clear that he’s trying to hide it, but the conman’s ears are bright red and he’s very pointedly staring at his own stack of pancakes.

Not too long later, Rosho’s on the couch with two gift boxes in their lap, Sasara sitting behind them and clinging onto their back like a barnacle and Rei in the chair nearby. “Whatcha waitin’ for, Rosho! There’s no time like the present !”

Rosho laughs a bit at their boyfriend’s awful pun before gently unwrapping the first box-the one from Sasara. Inside is a small bracelet, deep purple in color and with a small crescent moon attached. They have to hold back a gasp at just how beautiful it is, and while they’re stunned just looking at it Sasara leans forward and slips it onto their left wrist. “Sasara…it’s gorgeous.” Rosho has always loved the moon, and Sasara just knows them so well…

That’s when Rosho notices something on Sasara’s wrist, and lightly grips his arm to get a closer look. It’s another bracelet, similar to theirs but light orange and with a sun affixed to the end. “We match…” It’s an incredibly sweet gesture, so much so that their eyes threaten to well up, which is definitely uncommon. Sasara just has that effect on people…or maybe they’re just hopelessly in love. Could really be either. “But Rei…?”

Rei lifts his arm to proudly display a deep gold bracelet, complete with a star-shaped charm. And just like that, they’re whole; the three of them fit together like a puzzle. Almost instinctively, Rosho reaches out and takes Rei’s hand, under the guise of getting a closer look at the star but really just wanting to hold his hand. Their third member smirks like he knows exactly what Rosho’s up to and just for that they pull their hand back with a fond eye roll.

“Open the next one!!” Sasara cheers, obviously impatient, and Rosho nudges him playfully off their back before opening the present from Rei. Inside is a seemingly plain leather book, except for the right corner of the cover having their name scrawled on it, accompanied by three small hearts. Curious, Rosho leafs through the book, seeing pictures of themself both from years ago and fairly recently-some of which Rei wasn’t even present for. “A photo album…how did you even get some of these?”

“It’s me. What’d ya expect?” Rei teases, although he has a fair point. Rosho laughs softly before casting their gaze back down to the book; most of the photos have dates or small notes written next to them in Rei’s distinct handwriting. At the end, something falls out from between the pages and Rosho squints to read it, then gasps. It’s their very first comedy routine with Sasara, complete with the annotations from them both; Sasara’s in messy blue pen and Rosho’s in neat jet-black ink. It’s far from any good, but just to see this and remember how far they’ve come…it’s touching, in simple terms.

“Happy birthday, Rosho-I love ya so much.” Sasara says, more serious than Rosho’s heard him in awhile, but the atmosphere shatters when Sasara leaps on them again and hugs them tighter than ever. Another warmth joins Sasara’s and when Rosho looks up Rei’s there too, fingers carding through their hair. The moment is just so shockingly tender that they have to will themself to not cry on their birthday for the second time in roughly twenty minutes. Rei seems to sense that they’re a little emotional, so he hops up and switches the radio back on, and a moment later Sasara’s dancing with him in the kitchen, fingers locked with his and a goofy smile plastered on his face. “You comin’, Rosho?”

Rosho heads over, takes Sasara’s outstretched hand, and feels warmth and love envelop them, stronger than ever.
