And a voice that came from you and me

Summary:

Tony wordlessly turns up the volume, his deadpan expression fighting a smile.
(And losing terribly, as his will tends to do when it comes to Peter)
---
Or: It´s twosday and I wrote a fic for it literally just because I can. There´s s̶c̶r̶e̶e̶c̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ singing in a car, and our favourite father-son duo have a nice time because we deserve soft happy moments and so do they :)

Notes:

HAPPY TWOSDAY EVERYONE!
Aesthetically pleasing dates, am I right.
Okay so it´s super random but I found Hamilton and Irondad at around the same time so THE Irondad song for me back then was Dear Theodosia ;w; but in more recent years I´ve found American Pie scattered in so many wonderful fics I can no longer listen to it without associating it with Tony and Peter, which honestly makes me quite happy. It´s such a bop. I don´t think I would have heard it without notapartytrick and losingmymindtonight, so I want to give them a huge thank you for including the song in their fantastic stories! You guys are so cool :)
Sorry the fic is so short but I hope you still like it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Two seconds into the song, and Peter´s face lights up like the freaking surface of the sun. Tony wordlessly turns up the volume, his deadpan expression fighting a smile.

(And losing terribly, as his will tends to do when it comes to Peter)

The first lyrics make for a surprisingly peaceful time, Don McLean softly crooning about how that music used to make me smile, the grassy, uneven scenery passing by in a blur as they drive, sun-dipped clouds seeming to be suspended in time over their heads and as far as the eye can see.

Even driving, this is the most relaxed Tony´s been in a long time.

But February made me shiver-” Tony chances a quick look to the driver´s seat, and there´s Peter lip-syncing and turning in time to the music, brow furrowed in an expression that´s honestly far too serious for the occasion.

He makes sure to place his attention back on the road just as fast, but the highway´s surprisingly empty for this time of day, no cars to be seen for miles around. A small, loose smile makes its way to his face as the music keeps on playing. It stays there.

At least until the chorus starts, and a certain someone starts singing animatedly like the lanky bundle of energy he is.

(Singing might be a generous description.)

(Tony would be lying if he said he actually minded. In this small fragment of time, no one´s around to judge him for it.)

They both sing in time to the music then, Peter´s voice loud and increasingly impassioned, all smiles and exaggerated gestures, Tony´s far gentler, making sure he´s focused on the road.

Peter can´t dance for the life of him, (once out of the suit Peter´s not…entirely graceful) but what he lacks in elegance he makes up for in enthusiasm, little hand movements clashing in harmony with the loud music and profound lyrics. Then he opens the window, and the wind makes his hair come alive in movement as he screeches the chorus outside it.

He didn´t notice it the first time the chorus came around, but as soon as he listens properly to the way Peter´s changed the lyrics, Tony can´t suppress a laugh. Because what else would his kid do?

“Bi, BI, MISS AMERICAN PIE” and now they´re both taking over the lyrics, screaming to high heaven like two loons at a concert. “DROVE MY CHEVY TO THE LEVEE, BUT THE LEVEE WAS DRY, THEM GOOD OLD BOYS WERE DRINKIN' WHISKEY AND RYE-”

Peter turns to face Tony in his seat dramatically, putting a hand to his skinny chest and saying the next lines with all the flair of a high school Shakespeare play. “This will be the day that I, die!”

“God, it better not be.” Tony mutters suddenly, making Peter dissolve into laughter. “May would have both our heads. Death by scary aunt is a plausible but very unimpressive way to go Pete, so sorry, not today.”

The song plays on, and both their voices drift in between the cloudy sunset with it.

---

Two days after their little impromptu road trip moment, Tony´s phone pings with a new message.

Happy twosday!

Mr. Stark I have made a grave mistake

“Oh boy” he mutters.

So you know how you can send a message to all your contacts?

I sent the Happy Twosday message to everyone

But

I forgot I have Mr. Bardot’s number from college admissions saved bc of that one time I had a question

Phone calls are terrifying btw

Tony snorts and shakes his head slightly. How to forget the time Peter got so worked up over having to make a formal phone call he said “love you” instead of goodbye and then spent the next 10 minutes straight screaming into a pillow. Tony almost busted a lung from trying not to laugh at the poor kid´s expense.

So as soon as I realized I checked and

He already saw it.

What do I do

Kid. He works with teenagers. I´m pretty sure that´s one of the least weird accidental messages he´s gotten in his career, don´t sweat it.

Also, twosday?

(As if FRIDAY hadn´t had the date in Tony´s schedule ever since the kid mentioned it excitedly last year. Peter even has Tony´s AI´s wrapped up around his little finger. Tony doesn’t think about how that fact relates to his own feelings for the kid whatsoever.)

Yeah! The twenty second day of the second month of 2022!!!

A once in a lifetime opportunity Mr Stark

Oh I don´t doubt it

Want to come to the lab today to celebrate such a life-changing date then? Happy can drop you off at school tomorrow morning

…can I play every song with any semblance of having “two” in the lyrics when we´re in the lab?

Do I have a choice?

no

Thought so. See you after school kid.

:D!

See you Mr Stark!

Notes:

Tony definitely has Peter saved as "Arachnid vine reference" because. Why not.
Thank you for reading! Comments and kudos will be cherished forever in a little box in my heart. I hope you all have a splendid day!!!
