Work Text:
“He’s gone.”
“It’s too late.”
You rolled your eyes at the wailing of people talking about Poe being taken by the First Order.
This was one pilot not someone the entire Resistance needs to mourn, you thought.
His friends seemed to be holding it together better than these random people you were pretty sure Poe had never talked to.
You wanted to say something but Leia told you if you yelled at them to stop wailing like a fucking war widow she was going to sever your connection to the force.
You knew she wouldn’t do it but you were pretty sure she’d try something.
You were trying to learn the art of shutting up and not giving your opinion constantly but it was hard. You’d been raised that way with the dark side. Don’t care what others think or if it would hurt them emotionally. Do what must be done to get what you want.
What you wanted was for people to tone down the wailing.
You force threw the people out of the room and shut the door behind you. Leia had called for you for an important briefing and you liked to actually understand what she was saying.
For once Leia didn’t yell at you for mistreating people, in fact she looked grateful.
“We need Commander Dameron back.” Leia said.
“I know he was important to the Resistance but you have to let him go.”
“He was our best pilot but he also holds a lot of our secrets. Ones that would destroy us.”
“You want me to kill him?” You asked.
“No! No, no. Get him back here.” She replied.
You were about to say something.
“In one piece. Bring him back alive and well and with all his limbs attached.”
“I thought you were the fun Skywalker.”
“Fun? You take that back.”
“How do you know the First Order doesn’t already have the secrets?”
“Because we are all still alive and Kylo Ren has been occupied elsewhere. Get to the base where Poe Dameron is being held and get him back.”
“Aye, aye General.” You gave her a half-hearted salute and headed out the door.
“One last thing?” Leia called out to you and you turned around.
“Don’t call me a Skywalker.”
—————————————————————————————
It wasn’t all that hard to find the First Order base. You had been given reports on rumours of the location and where Kylo Ren was currently. You decided to follow Kylo Ren and persuade him to let you join.
You had all sorts of tactics to force your way in but the one that worked was you telling him how much the Resistance sucked and that the First Order was the right place for you.
After managing to choke back any vomit on the lies you just told, you were now at the base.
“You will meet Supreme Leader Snoke.”
By the maker, your lightsabers were dirty. You hadn’t cleaned them in a while perhaps Kylo had some cleaning equipment lying around.
“I’m talking to you.”
Dirt on your new boots as well. This mission was already a disaster.
All of a sudden you felt yourself being pinned against the wall.
“Listen to me.”
You took a hold of his hand that was currently around your neck and, without any effort at all, moved it off of you.
“Yeah I know. Snoke. Lead the way.”
Kylo seemed shocked you just so casually did that and he only moved again when you snapped your fingers in his face.
You followed him off the ship and through the hangar. You scanned the area for any sign of Poe Dameron. From what you saw at the Resistance, and from your own limited conversations with him, he was a chaotic mess. His curly hair always wild and a smile on his face.
He’ll be the opposite of that at the First Order. It was kind of sad in a way. He was fun to be around and he made the Resistance more lively. Now it was just bland and boring.
Like the First Order.
“Hurry up Snoke does not like to be kept waiting.”
“I don’t like to be told what to do.”
Kylo was no longer wearing a helmet and so you could see the look of contempt on his face.
You traipsed after him to go meet this illustrious Supreme Leader Snoke.
What a fun day it has been.
—————————————————————————————
It had been three weeks since you arrived at the base and there had been no sign of Poe. You had hoped this mission would be easy. Get in, kidnap a First Order pilot, get out.
Snoke had pretended to be pleased with your arrival but you knew otherwise.
The rule of two the other sith so loved to follow.
If you exist then it means that either he or Kylo Ren would have to die.
You had no problem with killing Snoke, in fact you’d do it right now if it weren’t for this mission.
Sith lords are supposed to be chaotic and not listen to rules, why listen to one that will guarantee a short life span?
This was not the time to dwell on history you had a job to do.
You’d wandered into a large room with a table in the middle. Everything was shiny and everyone in the room looked like there was a permanent bad smell in it.
It wasn’t you because you just had your clothes cleaned the night before. The services on this base were great. You just might defect for this alone.
The door opened and Hux walked in with someone behind him. That explained the bad smell.
You took a closer look at the person behind him and you could see it was Poe.
His hair was slicked back and his uniform was clean and had not even a single wrinkle in it. The opposite of his Resistance days. His jaw was clenched and his hands behind his back. You had your hood up which covered most of your face so as he doesn’t recognise you.
What would happen if you were to run your hand through his hair? Would it fall out of place? Would that one piece of hair hang in front of his eyes that you liked so much?
Your hand would be greasy that was for sure. Kylo had nice hair, untouched by the hair product the First Order seemed to rely on.
Say what you will about the First Order, and people do, but the uniforms they wore were very figure hugging. At least you had some eye candy around here.
Another point in the should you defect for stupid reasons column.
“This is Commander Poe Dameron, formerly of the Resistance. Just like you.” Hux said smugly.
He thought people wanted to join the First Order instead of you coming here to retrieve Poe.
“Hey.” You said to Poe but he said nothing.
“He was so loud when he found him. He just wouldn’t shut up about the Resistance coming to rescue him and end us all. The team they sent were so pathetic but they provided the Stormtroopers with great target practice.”
So that’s what happened to the previous team Leia sent to rescue Poe. She suspected that they died but never had any confirmation.
“We wanted to kill him and be done with him but having him here working for us is a bigger slap in the face to the precious Princess, don’t you agree?”
“I’m sorry, were you talking?” You had only been half paying attention to him. When Hux started talking about killing Poe your mind had drifted to the ways you could pull out Hux’s tongue with the force.
“You insolent-”
Hux didn’t have time to finish his sentence before you started force choking him. He was an excellent way for you to take out your anger on.
“Don’t ever speak to me like that again. Understand?”
He nodded his head and you released him. Hux on his knees in front of you? Oh an image you could get used to.
You would need to get a picture of Hux’s face once he realised you were here for the Resistance and not for him or his stupid First Order.
“I am your personal pilot.” Poe said.
You stifled a laugh. Your own pilot? This was great, you’d just need an excuse to leave and you’d be back by dinner time.
“I don’t need a personal pilot.”
You had to play this cool and pretend to not care. Leia gave you enough time to get him back she trusted you with this.
Force projection was a new ability you had recently been training in and you couldn’t hold onto it for long but you managed to do it long enough to give Leia a small brief on what happened.
Communications in and out of this base were being heavily monitored but this was a fool proof one.
Because the fool was Kylo Ren and he wouldn’t think to check the force.
“When you are sent on missions you need a pilot. This is the pilot.” Hux wheezed out.
“What about when I’m not on a mission?”
“Then he will stay here awaiting further orders. He’s quite good at following them. We broke him down and built him up again. The perfect soldier.”
You were going to break Hux. Build him up so his arms were legs and legs were arms.
“The last time you built up a perfect soldier he ended up betraying you and running off to the Resistance. You seem quite skilled in building up the perfect traitor.” You said and you left the room before he could say anything.
Insinuating that Poe might defect was a bad idea. It might cause Hux to send Poe back for reconditioning. From the stories that Finn told you, it was horrific process but then all was calm. It was like being punched in the face with a wrench but then you were immediately given pain relief medicine that sent you on a high.
A high that they never came down from.
Your respect for Finn went way up for what he managed to do.
—————————————————————————————
You had been given your own office. It wasn’t far from the training room you shared with Kylo Ren.
You hated to admit it but he wasn’t as bad as everyone else made him out to be.
Well he was in terms of war crimes committed but personality wise he wasn’t the worst. His sense of humour matched that of his mother’s and you found yourself missing the Resistance.
Rose was your closest friend at that base. After the loss of her sister and you trying to comfort her about you losing your family you had bonded over that. You told you never cared for your family so you got over it pretty quick and Rose just burst into tears again.
Ah grief. It’s a hell of a thing.
Rose was about the closest you ever had to a family and you even found yourself missing Rey. You barely got along but she did have her fun moments.
A knock on the door tore you out of your thoughts and you called for them to come in.
It was Poe.
You heard a soft click on the door which sounded like it locking. One of your lightsabers was on the desk in case he tried anything. Leia said no taking any limbs off but she didn’t say anything about extra parts going missing.
“I’ve seen you watching me.” He came closer to your desk and you leant back in your chair, putting your feet up on the desk.
“You have a really nice ass.” You said in an off hand tone. It was true but saying it out loud made you cringe.
“My ass isn’t on my face.”
Quick, you needed to think of a witty comeback to that.
Poe was now leaning over the desk and you could feel him so close to your face.
“I live to serve.” He said quietly and he leaned in closer to you.
You immediately jumped back and away from him.
“What happened?” You asked forcefully.
“I don’t-” His calm demeanour slipped away and you could feel the panic emanating from him.
“What did Hux say to you? Which one of those First Order bastards sent you to do this?”
“Nobody makes me do anything.” Poe said and he took a step back.
You moved from around your side of the desk to where he was stood and he moved back again.
You kept this up until his back was against the door.
“I think they do, Commander. Nobody dares bother me unless they ordered to.”
Poe didn’t get a chance to reply back because you’d used the force to open the door and he went flying backwards.
You were torn between feeling sorry for Poe and annoyed at him for interrupting your important work of doing nothing.
You went back inside your office, collected your lightsabers and left to find Hux.
There had to be a plan to get Poe away from here but he was too closely watched and escaping with your lives was highly unlikely.
—————————————————————————————
“I heard you threw Hux against a wall today.” Kylo said as he ducked to avoid your staff.
“Are you upset I did?”
“No, I just wish I’d seen that myself.”
You jumped as Kylo tried to take your legs out from under you.
“Commander Dameron is a pilot, he is not here to seduce information out of people.”
You knocked Kylo over and pointed the staff under his chin.
“I’m here because I want to be. I know that the First Order is my best choice. I don’t appreciate being questioned by someone a lot lower than me and a lot less powerful than me.” You said.
Kylo moved the staff away from him and stood up.
“I have no doubt of your loyalty to us.” He said.
You had given him enough information on the Resistance to placate him and that had given Leia enough time to escape with all they needed. Snoke was still suspicious of you but you didn’t care. He was paranoid about anyone and anything that could stop him from achieving power.
“The pilot had information on the Resistance but before I could get back and interrogate him Hux had already sent him to re-conditioning.”
Huh. That was weird.
“So it’s more difficult to get.”
“Yeah.”
You used your staff to swipe his legs out from under him and he went crashing back down to the floor.
You had just been given a lot to think about. Hux wants to destroy the Resistance and all he would have to do is wait for Kylo to come back and force his way into Poe’s mind again and he’d have the information.
Perhaps his hatred of Kylo Ren outweighed his need to conquer the galaxy? You don’t think you’d ever understand what happened between those two.
Sending Poe to re-conditioning wouldn’t of wiped out any information he had, right? It would just be buried deeper in his mind. You didn’t want to give anyone ideas about destroying Poe’s mind. He’d already been through enough. You needed to get him out of here and fast.
You headed on back to your room to shower. Kylo had light side training and you wanted to pick up on anything he could give you. He seemed happier that he had another force user around.
It’s going to suck for him when you saunter out of here with Poe.
—————————————————————————————
It was your first mission as a member of the First Order. You were going to do them proud, to wipe out any Resistance scum you came across and whatever else Hux had told you.
By all that is the force he was insufferable and more dramatic than any sith lord.
You were sat in the cockpit of a very nice ship when Poe entered and shut the door. He was eerily silent as he started it all up.
“Are you going to talk to me or keep silent the entire journey?” You asked.
He said nothing. You left him alone for a few minutes while he did whatever he needed to do.
When you were finally away from the base and into hyperspace you started to talk again.
“Do you want to talk now?” You asked again.
“What about?”
“Since you’re my personal pilot and I am your personal sith lord maybe we should get to know each other.”
“You kicked me out of your office for trying that.” He said.
“I did that because you were trying to use your good looks to get information out on me. I won’t be fooled by a pretty face.” You paused for a moment. “Unless I met a clone of myself.”
“You think I’m good looking?” For a moment he seemed like his old self. The cocky personality that came out anytime someone said nice about him.
Perhaps this would be a good way to break him out of his conditioning. Either knock him out and drag his very nice ass back to the Resistance or flatter him enough that will bring him back to his old self.
He’d never let you live that down but you didn’t care as long as he was back.
It was starting to sound like it mattered what happened to him.
“Yeah.”
“First you say you like my ass and now my face. Anything else you like?”
You suppressed a smile but decided to move on.
“Why do you have your hair all gelled up like that?”
“First Order regulation.”
“I don’t like it.” You said.
“Tough.”
“You once told me you lived to serve and if you serve me then I insist you stop greasing your hair like that.”
“It is regulation. It is the rules to have your hair like this.”
You sighed. You were back to the no fun allowed First Order Poe.
“What do you think of the Resistance?” You asked.
“They are chaos and will end up destroying the galaxy. They must be stopped.” He replied with all the tone of voice of someone who has had this beaten into them. It made you pity him.
You turned away from Poe and stared out the window. Not that there was much to see. If the intel was right and the Resistance was here they could help you with getting Poe back to their base.
“Have we met before?” He asked and you looked at him. “I think I know you.”
“In another life time we were married. Just two people in love until you joined the First Order. I was very heartbroken that you left me behind. I became an all powerful feared sith lord and I infiltrated the First Order to give you the divorce papers.”
“Really?”
“No.”
“Shame. I think being married to you would be fun.” Poe was smiling. The smile that made you feel happy whenever you saw him on the base.
“Depends on your definition of fun.”
“What’s that around your neck?” He asked.
Ah.
When you were sneaking around for information on Poe’s capture you had stumbled upon his personal things. There wasn’t much in there, just his blaster and jacket. Then after rummaging around in the bag a ring fell out. You picked it up and recognised it as Poe’s.
He once told you the story behind it. How it was his mother’s wedding ring and he would give it to the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
Something worth that much to one person could not be in the hands of the First Order. You had taken it and put it around your own neck, you figured it was safer there. It wouldn’t fall out your pocket and it was hidden under your shirt so no one would notice.
You’d been wearing it for so long you had grown used to it. There was a small part of you that felt shameful for wearing it. The ring was not yours to wear like this but the need for him to have it back was too much. Wherever was the safest was the best.
You’d managed to sneak on yours and Poe’s equipment onto the ship on the assumption you would be able to escape and you could have easily put it back in the bag but it felt wrong to do that.
“Just a necklace belonging to a friend.”
“They must of been a very good friend.”
“Yeah. Yeah he was.” You said and you pulled your jacket up around you so he couldn’t see the chain anymore.
—————————————————————————————
“This isn’t right.” Poe said.
“Nothing I’ve ever done was right.” You replied then you smacked him around the head with the hilt of your lightsaber knocking him out.
“Didn’t think that would work.” You said to no one as you looked at the body of an unconscious Poe. You picked him and carried towards the nearest Resistance transport ship where the med staff took him off of you.
“Traitor!”
You turned to see Kylo yelling at you.
You blew him a kiss and entered the ship as it took off. The x-wing pilots were defending your ship so Kylo wouldn’t be able to stop you. It was more important that Poe got back to the Resistance.
You were dragged over by a doctor to have yourself checked over. You had nothing more than a headache and a few bruises.
Oh and a shoulder with a blaster wound in it but that was neither here or there.
When you landed at the area you were supposed to be for this mission a massive fight between the Resistance and the First Order had already broken out.
Poe’s immediate response was to pull out his blaster but you tripped him up and taken the weapon off of him. Another Resistance fighter had shot at you because they thought you were about to hurt Poe. It hurt like hell but it wasn’t going to stop you from getting Poe back to the base.
He had told what you were about to do wasn’t right and then you had knocked him out.
Kylo Ren had seen the entire thing play out but luckily he had gotten distracted by Rey long enough for you to carry Poe to the transport ship.
Now you were on the ship and making it back to the base. You would need to be treated for the wound as soon as you landed but the doctor had done enough to keep it from getting worse in the meantime.
You looked over at Poe in concern as he lay unconscious.
“He’ll recover from the bump on the head.” A doctor reassured you.
“Poe’s had worse but it’s the trauma from everything else I’m worried about.”
“He won’t be alone. We all help him.”
“I know. Can I go sleep?” You were starting to feel light headed.
“No. Stay awake.”
You didn’t reply because your eyes were closing.
“Ow.” Someone had pinched you.
“Next time I’ll stick my finger in your wound.”
Doctor’s were mean.
—————————————————————————————
It was two weeks later when you had time to talk to Poe again.
You had been discharged from the med bay pretty quick but they kept Poe in there longer. Finn had been the most help what with him having more experience in breaking the First Order’s brainwashing program.
You decided to stay out of the way in case you made him worse or he yelled at you but unknown to you Poe had been asking about you the entire time.
Leia had congratulated you on a mission completed and Rose had told you how the General had put the fear of the maker in everyone when they wouldn’t stop crying so loudly. Poe had a weird effect on people.
Rose had refused to let go until you told her everything. She enjoyed the parts where you choked Hux, as did most of the base. You had received a message telling you Poe wanted to speak to you in the med bay.
You made your way there to see him sat on the side of his bed.
“Finn says I have you to thank for bringing me back.” Poe sounded like his old self again. He hadn’t full recovered but it was a start.
“Sorry for hitting you around the head.”
“I’ll find it in myself to forgive you.” He said with a smile and you couldn’t help smiling as well.
“I would of liked to seen you. While I was in here.”
“I didn’t want to make you worse.”
“You wouldn’t have. You’d be more fun than anyone else in here.”
“Depends on your defintion of fun.”
“Help me get back to my room?” He asked and he hopped off the bed. He was a little shaky on his legs so you held onto him until he got used to walking again.
When you got back to his room he gestured for you to follow him inside.
“More privacy in here.”
“Oh.”
Poe sat on the edge of his bed and you stood awkwardly away from him.
“This may sound crazy but the time I was in the med bay when I was still in my mindset of thinking I was part of the First Order, the thought of you was what brought me back and calmed me down.”
“Really?” You asked not believing him.
“Really.”
“You’re right. It does sound crazy.”
“Thank you for saving me. Even if you did give me a bump on the head.”
“I didn’t think I’d be able to get through all that gelled hair so I hit as hard as I could.”
“Speaking of which, I need to have a decent shower to get all this out.”
“I’ll come back in an hour then.” You said and Poe laughed.
Neither of you knew what to say next.
“Oh, this is yours.” You said as you reached under your shirt to take the necklace off. Poe slowly stood up and took the necklace from you.
“You saved it.”
“I know it’s important to you. I couldn’t let the First Order keep it. It was the only place I knew that would be safe and it wouldn’t get lost.”
“You should keep it. It suits you.” He said.
“What?”
“No I’m kidding, it’s mine I’m keeping it.”
You watched as he put the necklace around his neck and yours suddenly felt colder and emptier without it.
Poe took one of your hands and squeezed it tight.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For bringing me back.”
You stared at each other for a lot longer than was necessary and he broke away from you while clearing his throat.
“I should probably...y’know.” He said.
“Yep. Me too. Bye.”
You rushed out of the room as fast as you could and Poe stood there as he watched you leave. He was holding onto the ring while he did.
It really did suit you.
