Light snowflakes drifted down from the sky, finding their home on the ground below. The wind carefully whipped around the trees, howling in the bright morning sun. The sun gracefully fell onto the snow covering the ground, before reflecting up into the sky, showing a pristine landscape for miles and miles. Nothing disrupted the bright, clean land, except for the sound of light snores.
Ymir looked over her shoulder to see her wife still asleep in their large bed. The covers were thrown all over the bed, barely covering Historia. She decided that she spent enough time staring at the land and set down her coffee cup before stepping away from the window still.
Her footsteps were muffled by her socks as she walked back to her bed before she gently sat down, barely making an indent in the bed. However, it was enough to wake up her sleeping wife. Historia’s eyes fluttered open, glancing around the room before they landed on Ymir. Almost immediately, a smile appeared on her face.
“Good morning,” Historia mumbled as she sat up to face her wife.
“Good morning. It snowed,” Ymir whispered as she faced the window once again. It was incredibly bright for the early morning. She attributed that to the thick layer of snow that covered everything in sight. Deep down, she knew that they only had a few hours of warmth and quietness before their children would be awake and ready to play in the snow.
“I see. When did you wake up?”
“Maybe an hour ago.”
“And you didn’t wake me up?” Historia asked, her eyebrows furrowing as she sat up. “I feel bad that you let me sleep in.”
“It’s okay. I wanted some time alone to myself. I just brewed coffee, read a little, and admired the snow. It’s not often that we get this much snow,” Ymir paused, taking a breath before speaking again. “I stood on the porch for a little. It’s quiet. The snow muffles any noise out there. Almost didn’t hear your ground-shaking snores.”
“Remind me to send for divorce papers once the snow is cleared.”
Ymir smiled before her eyes drifted to the blinding snow again. It was an addicting sight. There was nothing as pure and beautiful as snow. Eventually, Historia sat up and moved closer to Ymir. She rested her head on Ymir’s shoulder as she watched the snowfall as well.
The two sat in silence for a while before one of their stomachs rumbled, reminding Ymir that neither of them had anything to drink or eat. Without speaking, the two women made their way to their kitchen. As they walked, the floorboards creaked and stretched, louder than usual as the house’s bones were cold from the snowfall as well.
The silence continued to fill the house as Ymir and Historia worked in silence as they cooked their food and prepared breakfast. They only made enough for the two of them, knowing that their children would get up later.
As they ate, Ymir occasionally stole glances at her wife. They had been married for the past twenty years and even to the current day, they were still head over heels in love. Historia understood every part of Ymir and still loved her for it.
They met in a small town during their high school years when Historia was forced to live with her aunt and uncle after she got in trouble with her parents. Ymir lived on a farm on the outskirts of the small town, where she spent her days in school and the rest of the time working the farm. At the time, she was the only queer and transgender student in her school. However, she never had problems with the other students. One glance at Ymir told students that it was stupid to mess with her.
One winter day, Ymir was driving through the snow and spied a pretty girl trekking to their school. Everyone in the town knew it was silly to walk through the snow due to their insufficient plowing. She eventually pulled to a stop and called to the girl. Once her eyes met the girl’s, Ymir knew that she was in love. Standing next to her car was a beautiful blonde girl with eyes brighter than the sky. It was an accomplishment that Ymir was able to speak without stuttering to her.
It was also an accomplishment that Ymir was able to convince Historia to let her drive her to school for the rest of the year. She understood that they made heads turn whenever they walked into school together. Historia, the girl from a big city, who still dressed like she was living in one, and Ymir, the farm girl, who insisted on wearing her nicer farm clothes to school. Ymir was easily a foot taller than Historia, which kept everyone from approaching Historia. Quickly, the two became very friendly with each other.
It took months for Ymir to convince Historia to go on a real date with her, even though you could often find the two in the bed of Ymir’s truck whenever they weren’t in school. Very quickly, the two fell in love with each other and they began to date.
However, a problem occurred when Historia’s parents decided that Historia could come back to the city to live with them again. They thought that she had learned her lesson and she didn’t need to live in the small town anymore.
Until college, the two girls sent each other daily letters and had daily phone calls to maintain their relationship. Once they were in the same college, the two spent all of their time together and eventually, moved in together.
After college, Ymir and Historia moved back to the town they fell in love with and decided that they were ready to start a family together. Now, many, many years later, the two were still in love and had a small gaggle of teenagers that drove them mad.
As Ymir stared at her wife, she admired the face that she had loved for years. Over the past couple of years, Historia had more wrinkles around her eyes and mouth, but Ymir loved them. She loved knowing that she had been able to experience every part of Historia’s life, and she will be able to experience the rest of it as well. There was nothing more beautiful in this life than being able to experience another’s.
“What are you thinking about?” Historia asked in a whisper, catching Ymir’s eyes with her own.
“About you. And our marriage. And how we met on a day like this.”
“Hm, what a coincidence. I was thinking the same thing… Today is almost as beautiful as the day I met you,” Historia mumbled, her free hand moving to cover Ymir’s.
“You know what we should do?”
“What?”
“Go play in the snow.”
A small smile appeared on Historia’s face as she quickly nodded and stood up to take her dishes to the sink. She placed them gently into the sink before she ran upstairs, leaving Ymir in the kitchen by herself. Ymir laughed and smiled to herself before she moved to join her wife upstairs.
They quickly dressed for the weather as quietly as possible in hopes of not waking up their children. Once they were done, they headed downstairs to enter the winter wonderland that awaited them outside their house.
The two women stood at the steps that led up towards their house, staring out at the white expanse in front of them. The whole world was covered in inches and inches of pure snow. Historia’s hand quickly found its home in Ymir’s and began to pull her towards the snow.
Their feet crunched the ice and snow that accumulated on their steps as they walked. Ymir let her eyes wander, taking in the beauty that surrounded them. Each tree has a thin layer of snow on all of its branches. Little birds flew around, trying to find a dry spot to stand.
Eventually, Historia dragged Ymir to the base of a tree and forced her to sit down against it. Ymir stared up at her wife, trying to understand what she was trying to do. Next thing she knew, her wife sat down, straddling her hips.
Historia wrapped her arms around Ymir’s neck and stared into her eyes, filling her field of vision. No words needed to be spoken as Ymir knew what her wife was thinking. Ymir slowly pulled off her gloves before laying her hands on Historia’s cheeks. She slowly rubbed her thumb in a circle against her skin before she pulled Historia in for a kiss.
Historia’s fingers moved to intertwine in Ymir’s hair, pulling her slightly closer to her. Ymir held on tight, trying to savor the warmth between the two of them. Her heart beat faster and faster with her love for her wife. All she wanted was to continue to kiss her.
Eventually, Historia pulled away and laid her head against Ymir’s shoulder. The two caught their breath as they held onto each other.
“I love you,” whispered Historia against Ymir’s body.
“I love you too.”
The two relished in the moments of silence they had with each other until Ymir spied their children standing in the doorway of their house, watching their mothers hold onto each other in the snow. She planted a kiss against Historia’s cheek before she motioned for her to look towards the house. Once she spotted their children, Historia’s face quickly lit up as she climbed off of Ymir.
Her wife began to drag her back to their house where their children were awaiting them both. As they walked back, Ymir looked around her again, admiring the pristine landscape that was soon bound to be ruined with their children’s adventures.
Snowflakes continued to fall, finding their home on the ground or their body as they walked back. The sun reflected off of the white ground, making the world look a bit brighter. Ymir loved the wintertime a little more and more with each passing year. The winter gave Ymir her wife, and it gave her moments like these with her wife and children.
Once the two made it back to their house, their children were shivering and demanding that they came inside. Ymir glanced back once more at the land, staring at the barren trees, now wearing a coat. A smile formed on her face again before she walked into her warm house where her family awaited. The warmth and smiles on their faces welcomed her as she entered; a chorus of ‘good morning’ came from their children. Ymir relished in the beauty of the country and her family as she sat down, remembering her past, admiring her present, and she hoped that her future would be as beautiful as this day.
