Summary:

Naruto wants to buy something but it's much too big in Gaara's opinion. So of course Naruto buys it anyway and Gaara is left to clean up the mess

Notes:

Hello! My first Naruto one got such a positive response I felt safe enough to release a short one for our boy Gaara! I hope you all enjoy <3

Work Text:

Gaara observed the tree as Naruto stood by it, presenting it as he had just found a golden ticket. “This isn’t going to fit in our house.” Gaara was loath to say this as he saw Naruto’s expression fall but one of them had to be realistic. As Naruto looked back with sad eyes at the tree Gaara contemplated just buying another house, before dismissing it as he knows Naruto wouldn’t like such, “wasteful spending”. It was still unnerving how little Naruto asked of him, only requesting that they spend part of the year in America where his family was. It had caused a diplomatic stir when the American president married the Japanese prime minister but they worked it out, strong national ties after all.

“I think I can make it fit Gaara,” Naruto looked at him with a big smile and Gaara attempted a smile back, not trusting that it wasn’t creepy but Naruto seemed happy with it so maybe it was alright. Unfortunately, he also took that as an ok to go find a sales associate to help him get a box that the tree was in since it was on the top shelf and even Naruto wasn’t dumb enough to try that. As if sensing his thoughts, Naruto stuck his tongue out at him and Garra let him see the amusement in his eyes, even if for a moment, leaving Naruto to handle payment. Now here they were, tree out of the box and sure enough, it’s bent over and trying to topple over.

“I knew it wasn’t going to fit,” Gaara said mildly, in the safety of their home chuckling when Naruto said, “Not now Gaara help!” It was really a massive tree, the sales associate hadn’t wanted to sell it to them since it was a department store tree but Naruto is very persuasive. Wanting to see his husband suffer but also watching it get close to hitting his cactus Gaara had to step in, so he did what any reasonable rich person would do. He called someone to chop the top off. The workers made quick work of it, apparently, this happened frequently and they provided a fake Christmas top to hide the damage. Gaara patiently paid them and thanked them for their help while Naruto cried on the couch about “destroying the tree” and “Why didn’t he just believe in the spirit of Christmas.” After they had left Gaara went over to his husband and poked him, sighing as he was met with a back. “At least look before you weep, it looks good and it will look even better with those ornaments you bought.”

Naruto sat up and sniffled, rubbing his eyes, “You said I couldn’t use them because they were ugly.” Wincing Gaara remembered the crude ornaments, they were created by an elementary school to thank Naruto for his increase in school revenue, despite the sentiment Gaara felt like the world leaders needed more sophisticated decorations. “I changed my mind, must be that Christmas magic you mentioned.” Like a slingshot Naruto was on him, shouting out multiple thank you’s in his ear before jumping up and going to the closet pulling out multiple bags and the kid’s ornaments like they were precious treasures. Together Gaara helped put every one of them up, you couldn’t even tell they had to cut the tree by the time they were done and Gaara stepped back to admire the view, snapping a photo of Naruto as he put the last ornament on the tree. If asked Gaara will say it’s for the papers so people can see Naruto used the gifts but really it was because the only time Gaara had seen Naruto look so beautiful had been their wedding day.

“It looks perfect Gaara,” Naruto said as he stepped next to him and wrapped his arms around him, snapping a selfie and smiling at it even though they both know Gaara didn’t react to it.
Staring into the eyes of his husband he let out a genuine smile, “Yes, it does.”
