Work Text:

Sapnap tried to keep his promises but they always fell through. He couldn’t keep his marriage with Karl and Quackity (" it’s doomed from the start, Sap. You created a marriage hours after a war” George had whispered and Sapnap had shot back: “and you fell in love with the man who traded us for power). He couldn’t keep Dream in prison and he sure as hell couldn’t kill him.

Now, he sits in George’s bed, hand gently undoing all the knots in George’s hair. He’s still asleep, the mushrooms around him keeping him in an almost comatose state. He sighs heavily as he moves away, going to sit at the window.

His kingdom is wonderful, but the ache of missing someone ruins the beauty. Quackity was gone, no longer wanting anything to do with him or Karl or George and the pain of losing someone else is almost paralyzing.

His eyes burn with unshed tears. When was the last time he was glad to be alive? How long has it been since all his friends were together without wanting to kill each other?

“Come back to bed.” George’s tired voice cuts through his self-deprecating thoughts. Sapnap pushes himself off the window seat, slowly taking off his armor as he gets to the bed. He crouches by the bed, his eyes leveled with George’s.

“You’re crying.” His voice is incredibly soft, gentle in a way it never was with Dream. A soft hand sets on his cheek and he leans into the touch. His body shakes and he breathes in deeply, turning his head into George’s hand and pressing a gentle kiss into the unblemished hand.

George pulls away and Sapnap whines, following George’s warmth. A soft laugh escapes George as he stands up.

“Go to bed, I’m going to wash up.” George says, pressing a kiss to the crown of Sapnap’s head before leaving.

Sapnap slides into the bed, taking off his shirt and throwing it to the other side of the room. It’s kind of cold up here, with large windows that are always opened for the sun to filter in.

He stares out the window for a while, lost in the changing colors of the sky before George joins him. He slides himself into Sapnap’s side, Sapnap’s arm finding itself around George’s waist.

George curls into his side, his head in Sapnap’s chest. It’s quiet between the two, the only sound of their breathing. Sapnap is so sure that George has already drifted off to sleep again until George shifts so he’s laying on Sapnap.

“We should leave.” He proposes quietly, “Get away for a while, just the two of us.”

Sapnap frowns, “What about-”

George presses their foreheads together, “C’mon Sap, just the two of us.” He says softly, pressing another kiss on a stubbly cheek.

Sapnap tightened his arms around George, pressing him closer.

“Where would we go?”

“Far. A city maybe or a kingdom that’s willing to take us in.”

“How will we get there?”

“I’ll figure it out.”

“Will we be safe?”

“I’ll make sure of it.”

“Can you promise it?”

“For you, always.”
