Work Text:
Emily knew her time has come.
Soon, the sound of the wheels of Death’s carriage started to rumble her ears and she knew it was finally her time to take one last trip with Death. Now, forever.
So in that cool night, she made Martha call for her mother and only her mother. Her Susan, her Sue. And in the middle of the night, after the house was silent and no a single soul was in the streets, Sue walked in that room.
Their eyes met and even Emily knew the wheels were closer, she felt like one last breath, one last chance, was given by God to spend one more time with the only person she could say with certainty, that she always loved.
Sue knew too. It was long ago since she knew their time together was coming to an end. But even if her soul was tired and afraid, a touch of her hand was enough to make her smile.
“I’m going, my dear Sue” Emily whispered, as Sue sat next to her “Death is coming to visit me”
“I hope it takes their time because I will keep you for long” Sue smiled through her pain and tears “We will see the sun rise today, like we used to do when we were young”
“Oh, my dear Sue!” Emily smiled, sweet and happy “How I wish we could go back one last time and live all this moments one more time”
“I don’t, Emily” Sue, with her hand over Emily’s, looked directly into her eyes “I would never would come back”
“Why not?” Emily sounded surprised.
“Because I don’t want to change the best moments of my life” her voice broke, her eyes were red, trying to hold her tears; but yet, Sue smiled “I don’t wanna come back and live them again. I want to stay and live many more” with her fingers interlaced, Sue took Emily’s hand, placing a soft kiss on the palm of her hand.
Emily smiled, took a deep breath:
“I don’t think we have that many time”
“Who said so?” Sue replied “Death? I could fight with them” Emily smiled.
“Would you fight Death for me”
“As many time as I should” because even if Emily knew the time was getting shorter and the sweet hand of her friend, Death, was almost taking her; Sue was ready for more “Because I would never will allow you to leave me. Tomorrow? Tomorrow we will see the sun rise. We will go to the orchard, to the old apple tree and kiss more”
Emily smiled and wishing having that strength to do it, she replied to that:
“Oh, my Sue. I just wish we could have had more time. Life became so short and now… I must go”
“I won’t let you” Sue replied, Emily smiled “We will be happy. Together. In this life…”
“Or maybe the next…” Emily smiled.
But suddenly, she heard it. The wheels were loud and outside her window, she could swear, the carriage was waiting for her. SO turning one more time to Sue, Emily smiled and with a sweet smile, Emily asked.
“Susan, my Sue. My sweet Sue. Would you kiss me one more time before I go? Just a kiss goodbye”
Sue didn’t say anything. Her tears rolled down her face and kissing Emily one more time, Sue felt it. The cold hand of Death over her shoulder has they took the soul of the only person in the world who made her believe that this life there was a Hope for Happiness. The person she loved the most.
And in that night, in the cold of the night, Emily left the hand of her loved one and followed Death into a ride that maybe would last forever.
