What To Make Of This

Summary:

Daiki is passed out on the floor. Tsukasa knows it’s severe, and, well, passed out, not asleep, because usually, Kaitou Daiki is the most light sleeper he has ever met.

Notes:

Sometimes I just want something soft.

Work Text:

Daiki is passed out on the floor. Tsukasa knows it’s severe, and, well, passed out , not asleep, because usually, Kaitou Daiki is the most light sleeper he has ever met.

He walks forwards and pokes Daiki with his foot.

Daiki groans, so Tsukasa kneels down and turns him over as gently as he can. Oh, he’s fervish. No noticeable wounds, but it could still be poison or illness.

Tsukasa picks him up and carries him to bed. Daiki still does not wake up fully, just shifting in his arms, tiredly. It’s unfairly cute, actually.

Makes Tsukasa wish they could ever have something close to a healthy relationship.

Unfortunately, it’s the two of them, and there’s too much… dark history between them. But still, here he is, getting Daiki undressed just to see if there’s any more information about why he’s so out of it and carefully placing Daiki’s Driver in sight line.

Daiki might not do the same for him. Tsukasa doesn’t care.

As he’s pulling the covers over him, however, Daiki seems to wake up.

“‘Kasa?” He slurs.

“Yes,” Tsukasa says. “What happened?”

“Jus’ sick… don’t bother…”

“Okay,” Tsukasa says, getting up to leave.

“Wait!”

Tsukasa turns back to Daiki.

“Thanks,” Daiki says softly, and Tsukasa nods.

“Of course,” he says.

He doesn’t actually leave, just leaves the room. Can’t deal with seeing Daiki so vulnerable. Can’t leave him, either.

He should make a soup. Just in case Daiki’d have problems eating. Especially because he has no way of knowing how long Daiki had been there on the floor.

They always keep the meat and broth in the freezer - neither are home consistently enough to keep much in the fridge.

Though the meat is a moot point - chicken broth is ready and just needs to. Melt.

Tsukasa sighs. Glad he’s home, so he can change after. Which is all he wanted to do. A nice hot bath in a nice tub (because the photo studio interior had been inexplicable growing nicer over the years) and a change of clothes, not…

Not Daiki on the ground, very much out of it.

Tsukasa leaves the broth to melt and decides to develop his photos while he waits. Nothing… truly exceptional. He’s not been particularly busy lately.

He does however find the ones for the commission. Wedding photos, as strange as one would expect. But the truth reflected in Tsukasa’s photos is as happy as the event was.

He sets them aside for later.

By the time he’s done, the broth has melted enough to escape the jar, so Tsukasa puts it on the burner.

When he goes to check on Daiki, Daiki’s asleep again, but his Driver is gone, so likely under his pillow. Tsukasa changes and sits near him. Daiki’s burning up yet shivering and reaches sleepily for Tsukasa’s hand. Tsukasa doesn’t move except to let Daiki grab and snuggle with the limb as he pleases.

A while later, Daiki wakes up again and jerks back.

“I…” he says, more aware than the last time. “How long have you been here?”

“Not long,” Tsukasa says. “You want soup?”

Daiki sighs, clearly more lucid than the last time, if not by much judging by the way he tries and fails to push himself to sitting.

“If you made it, I might as well,” he replies.

Tsukasa nods.

“You wanna tell me what happened?” He asks.

Caught a cold a few Worlds back,” Daiki says with a shrug. “Picked a fight with a virus monster two Worlds later. Didn’t realize till I ran here and passed out.”

Tsukasa nods. He has so much snarky commentary he could respond to that with, but it would feel like kicking a dog that’s already down.

“I’ll bring that soup,” he says. “Could you maybe try and sit up?”

Daiki pouts.

“Shut up,” he says.

Tsukasa does in fact have to help Daiki sit up. And eat. By the time the thief finishes the bowl, he’s already clearly tired and out of it again.

Or maybe even more so because, when Tsukasa goes to bring the dishes, Daiki grabs his hand.

“Stay,” he says.

“I’ll be back in a moment,” Tsukasa promises. And he is, laying down next to Daiki this time, who burrows into him despite already being far too warm.

He has a galon of water and a cup on his side’s bedside table, too.

But for now, he’s just here to comfort a very sick partner.

Daiki stays a couple days more like this, slowly getting better and hating every moment of it. Tsukasa stays with him and let’s himself dote, as much as he can, on his Kaitou. That Daiki seems happier about. Except when they can’t stop their scathing tones, their harsh words, all the things which have defined their relationship for the past however many years.

Still, when Daiki says he’s gonna head off, it feels… a little strange.

“Go on, then,” Tsukasa says. “I won’t stop you.”

“Yeah, of course,” Daiki says. “See you around.”

“Probably.”

“…Thank you, by the way.”

Oh.

“You’re welcome,” Tsukasa replies. “I’m… glad I could help.”

Awkward smiles, a still broken relationship… but when they kiss goodbye, for once, it’s… soft.
