Work Text:

“H-Hello?”

Nothing.

All there was was eerie silence.

Dreadful silence.

“Is...Is anyone there?”

Another desperate call, met with nothing but an echo of his own frightened voice.

“P-Please...Someone...”

Despite his superhuman eyesight, he couldn't see a thing. There was only darkness and empty space, even bigger and abysmal than any imagined void. He choked out a sob.

Suddenly, out of the silence, he heard a sound. A light squealing, a ringing in his ears that went on and on and on...

“Stop!” he screamed, clutching his head, covering his ears, but to no avail.

Screams filled the void. Terrible, agonized screams, wails, and exclamations of suffering.

He much rather preferred the silence.

He found himself curled up in a ball on the floor—or, what could be called the floor in this hellish abyss.

To his horror, they began to scream his name.

“ADRIIIIAAANNNNN!”

He whimpered, sobbing, feeling like a frightened child during a thunderstorm.

“Stop, make it stop!”

He felt so lost. Where was Trevor? Where was Sypha?

“Please...” he begged, trying to catch his breath. “Someone...”

“Adrian.”

“Adrian!”

“Stop—!”

“Alucard!”

The dhampir jolted upright, gasping, shaking, reaching for something to hold on to. His gloved hands found his coat.

“Alucard...” a voice said.

Wide blue eyes stared at him. His breath hitched, and he held back a sob.

“What's going on?” Sypha asked.

“I-I don't know, I just felt so...lost, he replied, his voice shaky. “I was alone, it was dark, and there were voices...So many voices, screaming my name.”

“We heard you thrashing in your sleep,” another voice said suddenly.

Alucard turned to see the Belmont sitting nearby, starting a small fire. The three of them had stopped to sleep, and would continue their journey to Dracula's Castle in the morning.

“It was just a nightmare, Alucard,” Sypha said, kissing his forehead. “It's all in your head.”

“But it felt so real,” he said.

“I know...You've been through a lot. I think your stress is just manifesting in your sleep.”

The dhampir nodded.

“Come sit by the fire, Alucard,” Trevor said. “Take a breather, then we can try and fall back asleep.”

“We?” Alucard asked. “You're not going back to sleep?”

“We'll stay up with you,” Sypha smiled. “You won't feel lost anymore.”
