It was a beautiful day, but Martin Luther was not happy. He hadn't been happy for a while. Ever since the great winter, things hadn't been the same. Change was needed. Radical change.
But the church and the emperor couldn't see it. They were happy just clinging on to their power while the ordinary people starved.
The people needed to eat, and here there was no food. Luther knew the only solution was to leave, but this was considered blasphemy. This was holy land, how could he convince everyone to leave.
Yet he knew he had to take action. He made his way to the very front of the church and there declared his thesis. And the people listened.
The church could only watch horrified as people gathered around him, undermining their authority. Something had to be done. An imperial diet had to be called, and Luther must be forced to repent.
And so Luther was called before the diet, all the rulers of the land. He knew what the consequences could be, what they have done to those who came before him. But he did not stand down. The people needed to eat, they couldn't sustain themselves on faith alone.
The judgement was harsh. An imperial edict was issued, declaring Luther a heretic and banning anyone from spreading his message. But in exiling Luther from the realm, they had fallen right into his hands. They had underestimated the support he already had.
As Luther wiggled and burrowed his way out from the barren garden of the Holy Wormian Empire, it inspired the rest of the worms to follow him. With a whole worm colony they could start a new life free of the church, find new rich land, full of nutrients, just the kind of diet that worms need.
