Work Text:
When she shot her eyes open from her sleep, it was sudden. Her head snapped and her eyes frantically searched and glanced towards the clock that rested on her bedside table, and she panicked for a brief moment, only to remember that she had no schedule today. She wasn’t late for work, thank God. She’s had had an earful yesterday from her leader-unnie about punctuality and respect for others’ time. Hyejin slumped back into bed with relief and rested her groggy eyes, but immediately snapped them open again.
She could not feel Jimin’s presence beside her.
She didn’t dare to glance to where he was supposed to be. Her heart thumped furiously. She outstretched her arm to his side of the bed and flailed a little. When she felt nothing but sheets and covers, she started to chew on her lower lip.
He had gone.
This was not the first time his disappearance in the morning happened. Throughout their relationship, Jimin had always been called to work in the wee hours of the morning out of the blue, and being the workaholic that he is, had always immediately up and go. He had told her before that he did not have the heart to wake her up to tell her that he would have to leave so he would instead just leave her with a note (and sometimes just leave text messages in days that he was really in a hurry).
Hyejin sat upright, knees pulled close to her chest and wrapped her arms around them, still holding the urge to turn to the empty space. She also did not bother to look for his note that he may have left somewhere. Heaving a shaky breath, she rubbed her eyes to rid the remaining sleep. She thought she had convinced herself that his sudden disappearance was something she had gotten used to, and had accepted as a part of dating a member of a notoriously renowned and busy boyband. When in truth, it had somehow still hurt her. Call her sensitive and inconsiderate but it was not okay to suddenly leave without properly saying goodbye, especially in their situation as idols. Making time to meet each other and spending off days together had always been a huge hurdle for them, and Jimin made it easy to just slip away to work was probably what hurt her.
Sighing, she flopped back into her mattress and pulled the covers above her head. She made a mental note to give Jimin a piece of her mind about ‘common boyfriend courtesy’ whenever he decides to come back and express to him how hurt his actions—
Then the smell of coffee hit her nose.
The aroma captivated her whole body, including the remaining brain cells in her head. She lived alone and had no other guests. If she was in bed, then who was in her kitchen manning the coffee machine? Part of her already figured out the answer but part of her was yet to detach from the feeling of betrayal inflicted by her boyfriend.
In one swift cover tossing motion, Hyejin leapt out of bed and pulled on the first shirt she grabbed on the floor. She paced out of her room and into her small kitchen, where lo and behold, Park Jimin stood. His back was to her as he was busy with something. Just the sight of him standing there had evaporated whatever pent up frustrations she had before.
She breathes a sigh of relief. He didn’t leave her!
She padded towards Jimin and tapped his back when she reached him. Jimin flinched, barely catching the piece of bread that had slipped his fingers. He whipped around, confusion plastered all over his face. Hyejin laughed when their eyes met.
“Oh Hyejin-ah,” he managed.
She leaned forward to peck his lips and rested her head on his shoulders. The smile on her face never left her from the moment she entered the room.
Still confused, Jimin put down whatever items he had in his hands at that moment and patted the woman who clung to him like a koala by the head. “I made coffee,” he told her. “How about you go sit and I’ll bring breakfast to you.”
Hyejin squeezed Jimin’s biceps. She looked up at him and cupped his face in her hand. “From now on, wake me up whenever you are awake.” With that statement, she let him go and walked towards one of the stools placed against her countertop.
Moments later, Jimin walked over with a tray of toast and coffee. Gently, he set the tray down. “The theme was initially ‘Breakfast in Bed’. But since you’re here, it’s not anymore.”
She gave him a small smile, feeling dumb that she had jumped to the conclusion that he had left her in bed for work again. She internally scolded herself for lacking faith in the man who had probably planned to make her breakfast all this time. She watched as he placed mugs of coffee and two plates of toast smeared with butter and whatever jam he managed to find in her fridge.
Jimin took his seat and grinned in puzzlement. “Mind explaining the sudden declaration of ‘wake me up when you’re awake’ a while ago?”
Hyejin shook her head. “It’s nothing, really. It was dumb.” She patted his hand before grabbing for the coffee.
“Well, I trust you that it was really nothing. By the way,” He smiled at her. “Good morning!” He lifted his mug and clinked it with Hyejin’s.
Hyejin smiled, taking a sip of the hot drink. The drink, however, did not stay in her mouth for long. She spat the coffee back into her mug. “Ughh, Jimin!” Her expression distorts to that of disgust.
Jimin widened his eyes at her unexpected reaction. He took a sip out of his mug and reacted exactly like how Hyejin had. “Yuck!”
“What did you add into this?” she squirmed.
“Sugar? Maybe?”
Both of them looked over to the countertop where the supposed ‘sugar’ was. Hyejin raised an eyebrow, a finger pointing at a set of identical pots. “Left pot or right?” She inquired.
“Err, right?”
“That’s salt, dear.”
Jimin smiled sheepishly. “So, we are not drinking these then.”
Hyejin laughed. She admired the bashfulness that was evident on his face. She still needed to confront him about ‘common boyfriend courtesy’ but that can wait for another time. Right now, she was happily basking in the sight of having him with her in the morning. She grabbed his hands and intertwined them with hers. “Good morning, Jimin.”
