Overheard

Summary:

Thanks to his newly found ability, Jaime accidentally discovers a little secret that his diligent and responsible co-worker Brienne is hiding.

Notes:

I found this lovely prompt (Jaime is telepathic and Brienne comes to work distracted) and just couldn't resist writing this little piece.

I hope you will enjoy it :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Jaime Lannister had a disastrous weekend.

He had to endure the family dinner and his father trying to meddle into his children’s lives, the usual “disappointment” speech, constant bickering between Cersei and Tyrion and of course, the argument and slamming the door. All boxes checked.

Then his car broke half a mile from his home, in the middle of the strongest thunderstorm Jaime remembered and obviously, his phone had to die exactly at that moment. After half an hour of idle waiting in the car, Jaime said fuck it all and ran into the heavy rain. He was already in the backyard, dripping wet and panting, when a flash of sudden lightning tore through the sky, followed by roaring thunder.

He woke up Sunday morning on the ground of his backyard, having just enough strength to get up, take off the wet clothes and fall into his bed.

He slept through the whole Sunday, day and night, and on Monday morning he was totally fine.

At least Jaime thought he was until he entered the office and removed his headphones. Then he was hit by a wall of noise.

Not the usual noise like the radio, the coffee machine, the idle chatter of his colleagues. It was still there but it was sinking under another layer of voices. Voices that never seemed to shut up even when their owners kept their mouths closed.

That was fucking insane. Jaime rubbed his eyes and his ears. Impossible. This kind of shit only happened in movies or books. There was no way he could actually hear other people's thoughts. Jaime simply refused to believe it.

But after half an hour of sitting there, he involuntarily found out that Gilly started dating the guy from the office down below and now her thoughts were occupied by the fantasies of their next date (gods, have mercy and spare me the details); Pia was hot for him (big surprise); Elia was planning to set up her cheating husband (what an arsehole) and Brienne was completely absorbed by the new project she was given (how fucking boring).

“Gods, Tarth, have you ever thought about anything other than work?”

It came out before Jaime realised he was talking out loud. Big blue eyes reluctantly tore off from the screen and gave him a disapproving look across the desk.

“Unlike you, someone has to think of it,” she replied in an annoyed voice and returned to her screen. Why did he ask me this? Is it a set-up for some joke or just teasing? Gods, you never know anything when it comes to him. Oh, no… He’s still looking. Don’t get red, Brienne, you’ll look like a stupid beetroot. Maybe I already do and that’s why he’s staring? Okay, don’t pay attention to it. Think of work. Tullys. They are scheduled...

Her thoughts returned again to work and now Jaime had no other doubts. He was observing her closely as she was delivering her monologue but her big thick lips were sealed the whole time. Yet he heard her. Every single word. This could only mean one thing. He could hear people’s thoughts.

The revelation left him unable to focus on anything related to work, earning a few snappy thoughts about being Lannister and having his father’s backing. If I had, I wouldn’t rot in in his shitty company and in this fucking office, Jaime gritted his teeth annoyed at the silent accusations he couldn’t directly answer. It was insufferable, even if he didn’t care what other people thought about him. It couldn’t be anything good, he was sure of it. So what was the point of hearing it? It was useless. He just had to bear it until he found out how to get rid of this unwanted gift.

When lunchtime came, Jaime felt immense relief as all his co-workers, except for Brienne of course, stood up from their desks.

“We’re going to the Hot Pie for lunch. Would you like to join us, Jaime?” Pia asked with a hopeful expression on her pretty face.

“Not today.” Jaime sent her an apologetic smile. Going outside and being surrounded by other people seemed like the last thing he wanted to do.

“Brienne? How about you?” Please, say yes. Maybe Jaime will join us then.

“Thank you, Pia, but there is this bunch of emails I need to send before the lunch,” Brienne replied and added quietly only to herself: I’d like to go but I'm so excited to finish this scene.

“A little break would be good for you.” Jaime offered, hoping she would take the hint and just leave him alone for a moment. But Brienne ignored his remark, the only indication that she heard his words was a little blush that appeared on her face, otherwise stoic and dour just like always.

A minute later they were left alone and Brienne's voice filled the room, even though her lips remained closed.

Why did Jaime stay here? He never does this. Is he alright? He looked a bit down today… Should I ask about it? I don’t know. He probably won't appreciate me prying in his life. He doesn’t even know that I care... Jaime listened to it, completely dumbfounded. Her voice sounded so much softer and deeper than the one she used to address him. And the things she was thinking were much nicer than words she usually said to him out loud. Surprisingly, Jaime discovered he wanted to hear more of what was going on under her thick skull.

He moved his chair a bit closer, pretending to be occupied by the empty screen of his computer, which luckily Brienne didn't have a chance to see.

But she wasn't looking in his direction anymore, completely absorbed by whatever she was doing.

Alright, I think it is time for a little break. Just to finish this scene and nothing more. Brienne gave the room a discrete look which Jaime might have missed if he wasn't observing her in the corner of his eye.

Okay, where is this file? Am I in private mode? Ah, yes. Where did I finish? Here it is. Starlight looked at the Knight with wide-open eyes, which no longer could hide the utmost admiration, respect and love she came to feel for him the moment he saved her from the claws of a huge bear. It doesn't sound quite right, does it? Never mind, let's just write and I'll come to that part a bit later.

Jaime leaned closer, intrigued by the trail of her thoughts. Starlight and Knight? He suppressed a chuckle. He had no idea Brienne was a fan of this history inspired book series which reached peak popularity over a decade ago but was never finished either because of the author's laziness or just his lost passion for the story. Jaime, even if being a rather slow reader himself, remembered those books with fondness of a teenager crushing hard on this magnificent warrior woman which always amused Cersei and Tyrion, who never passed the opportunity to tease him about that.

Jaime smiled at the memory while Brienne continued.

The Knight stepped closer, his good hand raised to her face, touching her cheek with a gentleness she has never experienced before. Her heart was beating fast in her chest.

“Starlight…” he whispered in a husky voice as his face came closer, his hot breath caressing her face.

“Easy, Brienne, have mercy on your poor keyboard.” Jaime couldn’t stop himself from saying as Brienne’s fingers furiously tapped the buttons at incredulous speed. “I’ve never seen anyone writing such a passionate business email.”

“I’m just a fast typer,” she blushed, not quite looking at him. Oh gods, did he notice something? No, he couldn’t…. Take it easy, Brienne. There is no way he can see your screen.

“Can I read it?” Jaime sent her a sly smile. “Since we’re partners, I need to be updated about the progress as well.”

“You’ll be added to CC,” Brienne mumbled, her face now the colour of a deep red and Jaime delighted at the sight but stayed silent, curious where her story would go.

Okay, where was I? Ah, yes. He is now about to kiss her. Should he ask about her permission? Or maybe he’ll just slowly close the distance giving her a chance to step back if she doesn’t want him? Yes, I think I’ll go with that and then their kiss will gradually become more passionate and hotter. Oh, yes, I like that.

A small smile appeared on her lips and her fingers returned to typing.

The Knight slowly closed the distance as if he was waiting for her to retrieve. She never did. She wanted that. She dreamed of his closeness. She longed for his kiss. And now it was happening. His lips slightly brushed hers, it was the lightest touch but it sent the wave of excitement going through her body. His kiss deepened and she felt his tongue begging entrance to her mouth.

Jaime coughed harshly trying to mask a burst of laughter he could no longer control. It was more amusing than he would have thought. Brienne Tarth, the most diligent and responsible worker in their department, was writing smutty fanfic during her lunch break. It was too good to be true.

Oh my god. It is so bad, Brienne bit her lip. Maybe I should focus more on feelings and sensations? How would it feel to be kissed by someone you love? I wish I knew how just a kiss would feel.

Jaime looked up, for some strange reason surprised by the information he had just heard. Yes, she wasn’t someone to be called pretty, even plain was quite an exaggeration in her case. Her face was broad and freckled with a nose that must have been broken at least once. And of course, there was always that frown between her brows that wasn't making her any more pleasing to look upon. But it was Brienne. The first person he saw every time he raised his eyes from the screen, every day for almost two years. It was just Brienne, reserved and shy, too judgemental for her own good and amusingly snappy when pushed. And he knew how to push just well and she never hesitated to give him shit if she thought he was out of line.

And she was never kissed. This new knowledge about his Brienne somehow didn’t sit right with him. She had very kissable lips, big and soft, the realisation dawned on him suddenly as he watched her wetting them with the tip of her pink tongue.

Kissed by someone you love, Brienne continued in her thoughts, kissed by someone who loves you, like the Knight loves his Starlight. Like... I can’t even come up with any words to describe this. Why am I even trying? Everyone who’d read that would know that it was written by someone who has never experienced love. Only unrequited love. Maybe I should write about it?

The unspoken sadness shadowed her eyes and a wistful sigh escaped her lips. Jaime uncomfortably twisted in his chair. He shouldn’t be hearing any of it. It was a violation of her privacy and he was solely the one taking advantage of his new ability. It was never meant for him, he knew too well that Brienne would never willingly share it with him. But it wasn’t enough to make him go, especially as Brienne, completely unaware of his intrusion, continued.

Okay, stop with this misery. Starlight deserves more. In my story, she’ll get the Knight even if I can’t. So where did I finish? His kiss deepened and she felt his tongue begging entrance to her mouth. And she surrendered. She didn’t want to resist, she needed him and wanted him. Closer. To bask in his love and give him hers in return.

They kissed and their kisses were becoming more desperate. Starlight let her hands travel up and down his muscular back, to his golden hair, so soft under her fingers. The Knight let out a deep moan, pressing her closer to his body and his hand sneaking under the linen fabric of her thin nightgown, cupping and caressing her meagre breast.

Brienne finished typing and stared critically at the screen.

Starlight felt his rock hard cock pressing tightly to her hip, awakening a desire in her core and a pulsating need to feel him inside. Just the same as I do when thinking about Jaime, Brienne added, blushing scarlet red and Jaime felt his own cock twitch in his pants. Did she just?.. No, it couldn’t. She couldn’t fucking…

But Brienne continued, completely unaware of the effect her thoughts were having on him. Why did I think that? I need to stop it. Last night cannot happen again. No matter how good it feels, I need to stop. There is no point in doing that. It will never happen. Jaime won’t kiss me, he won’t touch me, he won’t even look at me that way. Oh gods, if he knew that I was imagining him taking me on this desk…

The sudden image of Brienne sitting on the edge of his desk with her skirt hiked up and her long legs wrapped around his hips as he was buried deep inside her tight wet cunt sent a wave of excitement through his body. Jaime leaned back in his chair in an attempt to discreetly adjust his jeans and hide the evidence of his growing arousal but being so engrossed in her thoughts and his visions, he overestimated the force required for this task and the next second he fell down on a floor with a loud bang.

“Are you okay?” Brienne immediately appeared on his side. I hope you are not hurt.

“I’m fine. It’s just… it’s…”

For the first time in his life, Jaime Lannister wasn’t able to formulate a coherent response as astonishing blue eyes were staring at him with concern mixed with something else.

“Are you sure, Jaime?” He seems a little flushed. If it wasn’t me with him and someone stumbled upon us right now, they would think we fucked on the floor.

“The floor is too hard but the desk seems to be strong enough to bear us both.”

Jaime regretted saying this the moment the words slipped of his tongue. Brienne’s face went completely white.

“I didn’t say it out loud, did I?” The pure unmistakable horror shone in her beautiful eyes. Jaime knew the best thing would be to lie. Lying always came easily to him. Too easy sometimes.

“You didn’t have to. I heard it all the same.” He cursed himself for not being able to lie to her. He never could.

“How much did you hear?” She whispered in a small voice, not even questioning if he had told her the truth.

“Everything,” Jaime admitted quietly. “Every single word since this morning.”

“No…” Her big freckled hands came up to cover her face which in a split second became red with shame and embarrassment.

Without another word or even a glance in his direction, Brienne stood and fled the room, leaving him, pathetic fool as he was, on a floor with his cock still half-hard between his legs.
