Work Text:
Genma held the toothpick between his teeth, turning away from the shoe lockers and making his way up the stairs. It wasn’t the first time he’d done this, and while he knew he’d get in trouble, it beat having to deal with the fangirls trying to give him chocolate.
He really hated Valentine’s Day.
Especially when the one person he would like to receive chocolate from wasn’t keen on giving him any.
He pushed open the door to the classroom, school jacket unbuttoned, shirt askew, tie hanging down like a scar around his neck. He pushed his hair behind with a hand, raking his fingers through the brunette locks.
“Shiranui-kun!”
Genma startled at the sight of Maito Gai, sitting in the desk near the window, the one right next to his.
He brought his hand down, giving a wave, and pushed his bag up his shoulder with the other one. “Hi.” He answered. “Didn’t know anyone was here yet.”
His classmate blushed, eyes not meeting his, and shrugged his shoulders. “I wanted to come in early today. And well, I am an early riser so it wasn’t that much of a change.”
“I see.” Genma stated, walking in and plopping down on the edge of his desk. Gai was taller than him, just a bit, but in this position, he towered over Genma.
Genma looked away.
Fuck, he thought , don’t blush and give yourself away Genma. You don’t even know if he’s into you.
As he looked away, at anything but Gai, he saw the box of chocolates on Gai’s desk.
“Oh,” he pointed to the box, “I’m sorry. Were you supposed to meet someone here today?”
Gai blushed more, his ears staining red. Genma held his breath, hoping that somehow Gai would say words he wanted to hear.
“Ah, yes? Kind of?”
“Oh.” Genma stopped chewing his toothpick, hand tightening around the strap of the bag that he had yet to put on his desk’s hook. “Do you want me to leave then?”
Gai straightened, brows furrowing.
“Are you meeting someone, Shiranui-kun?”
Genma shook his head, sending his hair flying into his face. He growled irritated and pushed it back, then fished out a bandana and tied it around his head to keep the locks in place. Gai watched him attentively.
Once he was done, Genma stood. “Aren’t you meeting someone here?” He asked Gai. “I can leave if you want some privacy.”
Genma had a feeling Gai was waiting for Hatake. He didn’t want to see the moment when Gai gave his chocolate to him.
Gai fidgeted, biting his lip. Then, he took a deep breath, gave a nod, and reached behind him.
And then, he promptly thrusted the box of chocolates at Genma.
Genma stared at them for a long time.
“For me?” He asked stupidly.
Gai nodded.
Genma stared for a moment longer, then reached out and took the box from Gai’s fingers.
He smiled hesitantly. “Want to go see a movie with me tomorrow Gai?”
