Work Header

Tell me, where do we go from here?

Summary:

He isn't ready to give the baby up, he needs more time, just a few more minutes. He screams in his head crying out to anyone that would listen to him. He knows keeping her isn’t an opinion but maybe he could hold her for a couple seconds. A minute would be nice to meet the baby that he's been growing for the last couple months. And in that time he will apologize to her for bringing her into this life. He knows that if the circumstances were different that he would live a happy life with her by his side.

To be a family.

It's all he wants, all he needs.

“She isn't yours, she's mine.” Sam manages to get the attention of everyone in the room. “You will not take her, I swear if you even lay a finger on her, I’ll kill you.” Sam curses looking Lucifer dead in the eyes.

Notes:

Work Text:

“Dean?” Sam moans again, the tightness around his stomach returns again. He grips the phone tighter than ever and he could hear a faint crack.

“What’s up Sammy?” Dean is clueless as ever and that thought alone almost caused Sam to hang up out of frustration.

“Uh, how far are you guys?” Sam breathes out when the contrantion lets go of him.

They are getting stronger and faster. Sam mentally thinks.

“I don't know like,” Dean stops talking and Sam can hear Cas in the background and he feels even some relief. “-ten minutes if traffic is in our favor. Sam are you okay?” Dean uses his big brother voice that Sam has always hated.

“Shit-“ Sam sighs.

“Sam what happened?” Sam knows Dean is pushing the gas pedal and driving way past the driving limit. “Sam!”

“I think my water just broke, oh fuck.” It's the only sentence he can get out before another contraction guts him, this one being one of the worse. He can feel it in his back and in his butt and even below his pelvis.

“Sam, is there any blood? You have to tell me if there is any blood. I have to know to make sure the baby isn't in distress.” Cas tries to talk to Sam to the best of his ability. Then Sam shakes his head while biting his tongue but then he remembers that he can't see him.

“It hurts holy hell. Can you guys come faster please.” Sam cries out again, he drops his phone and falls to his knees. The contraction peaking, it is almost like he's being forcefully and painfully pulled into two. He grips the wall and does his best to breathe through it. He can hear the muffle voice of Cas remind him about the breathing techniques they practiced months prior.

But in this moment all that information has left his mind and all he's left with a clear mind. He feels the baby inside him kicks and it adds to the pain. The list gets even longer as he feels the baby's head drop. Before he knows it he hears the sounds of the bunker door opening and heavy steps follow after.

“Oh my God Sam, sorry we didn’t come sooner. I should have never left you alone.” Dean looks down at Sam, who is still on the floor with his hands gripping his stomach. With the help of Bobby and Dean they get Sam up and on his back on his bed. Without any hesitation Cas pulls Sam’s pants and underwear off and drapes a towel over his knees. His feet are still covered by socks he got on not that long ago, there are tears running fast down his cheeks. And he's drenched by the liquid from his water breaking minutes ago, which is still actively dripping out of him.

“You are only five centimeters, five more to go.” Cas pats Sam's knee as he takes away some of his pain and it puts a smile on Sam's face.

“Thank you.” Sam breathes out and falls asleep and for a moment. Then the room goes quiet.

“What did you do that for?” Dean barks out, it doesn’t take a lot for Dean to lose his temper and in moments like this he finds it hard to hear the clear voice telling him that it is better to bite back his tongue.

“Dean we need to prepare, it's not that much longer until Lucifer comes knocking on the door.-“ Dean wants to correct Cas but he mentally applauses him for at least remembering.

“I know, but Sam should be involved in this conversation.”

“So when the time comes that he does show, he will show no mercy. He wants the baby and he will do whatever it takes to fulfil that wish. So while Sam is asleep we need to take advantage of that and use our time wisely. He doesn't have that much longer left.” Cas glances at Sam and examines him and he makes a mental note to time the contractions. He can do that because each time Sam contracts more and more grace fills him.

“Okay, what do we need to do?” Dean runs his fingers through his hair and takes a deep breath. Once Cas looks back at him he sees Bobby make his way to the door. So both Dean and Cas follow after. Before Dean shuts Sam’s bedroom door he turns the lights off and turns on the dim lamp on his side table

Once Dean feels content when he takes a look at the markings on the windows and the line of salt that outlines Sam's bed.

“I’ll be right outside Sammy, it's going to be okay.”

When Sam wakes up he sees the that the sun has come out. It's no longer the same day but now the beginning of a new one, a day that Lucifer's spawn may be born.

Sam rubs at his stomach again and he feels the baby move around, his bump seems to have got further down. He takes a chance and lifts himself up and walks into the bathroom. He has some trouble peeing because when he successfully sits down he feels a weird feeling. He wants to push, he is able to feel the baby right under him.

“Could this be it?” Sam asks no one but himself outloud.

Months ago he dreamed of this moment but now he wishes he had more time. He doesn't want this to happen now, he's not ready to let his baby go.

Cas told him to not get attached because it's useless since Lucifer always gets his way. He still has hope that Lucifer will let him have just one wish, the wish being that he would be able to keep her.

He knows he can’t keep the baby because it will put not only him in danger but also Dean. And if anyone got anyone close to Sam they will also get injured. Sam knows what Lucifer is capable of, he knows how strong he is.

Sam wants nothing more than for this hell to be just one crazy nightmare, he wants to go back to the dark gloomy nights, a time when he only feared his life. But now he fears two, his own and now this baby that is resting under his fingertips. That same baby that is soon to be born and before he gets to celebrate a new life that he made, it will be ripped away from him.

“Sam are you okay in there?” Dean knocks on the bathroom door and the feeling of deja ju comes into play. Dean’s sudden knock scares him and as a result he bites his lip to muffle a yelp that leaves his lips.

“Y-yeah, just taking a leak. Give me a minute to come out.” Sam lies and goes back to trying not to yell out in pain once again. “Mmm-“ Sam moans as a contraction happens again it seems like they are happening closer together.

He's almost at the end.

He gets up and flushes the toilet and makes his way to the sink that has a mirror attached to it. He gets a look at himself and when he sees his reflection he can't help but feel disgusted.

The bangs under his eyes are so dark they remind him of the eyes of a demon, the pitch black orbs that scare him so much. There is also sweat on his forehead and he just notices the very few drops of blood running down his legs. It doesn't alarm him at first since he remembers that it's normal to bleed.

He goes back to feeling terrible when the thought of the baby being in danger pops in his mind.

In the beginning of his pregnancy Sam kept wishing that he would wake up and have a miscarriage as a result that maybe his body became too weak to stay pregnant. Anything that could get rid of it. But now he doesn't want that to ever happen.

The baby isn't even here yet and Sam knows he'll do anything for this kid. He rests his hand on his bump and steps outside.

He was expecting to see Dean and Cas, or even Bobby, but he’s face to face with him

“Lucifer.” Sam holds his breath, he never thought the moment would be now. “What are you doing here?” Sam knows the answer, he knows his fate, he grabs his stomach tighter.

“Oh you know exactly why I’m here, Sammy.” Lucifer smiles widely, and points to Sam’s stomach. It sends shivers down his own spine.

The room goes cold and he feels so exposed, he wants to defend himself but it's impossible.

“I’m here to take what is mine. And I will not take no for an answer.” Lucifer doesn't get any closer. It's almost like he's stuck. Could he still be asleep?

“You’re not real. You are not real.” Sam  recites alongside shutting his eyes hoping that he's right.

“What do you mean Sam? I’m right here, This isn't some kind of mind trick, you can never escape, especially not this time. I have you right where I want you.” He disappears into Sam and his voice echoes in his own mind, louder than ever. Sam feels the baby shift but something tells him that it's not the baby moving, and that it's something else.

He jumps up and opens his eyes and he sees Dean in front of him. He's no longer standing near the frame of the bathroom door, but he's now back in bed.

“I could have sworn I was in the bathroom.” Sam questions become more and more confused.

“You never got up, did you have another vision?” Dean asks.

“Yeah I did, it was about Lucifer-he-he” Sam stutters not knowing how to control his racing thoughts.

“We have less time than I thought. He’s seven centimetres. We have to hurry up and prepare.” Cas drops the towel back on Sam’s legs after that, he removes the shade of crimson stained gloves off his hands.

“Please tell me we have a plan. I don't want to just give up this easy. There has to be other way.” Sam looks down at his stomach.

“Whatever you're thinking it's a no.” Dean shuts Cas immediately up.

“Dean shut the hell up, I wasn't asking for any one’s permission.” Sam talks back, making the room go quiet. “There is no way I’m giving my baby away. I will do whatever it takes to make sure that bastard never gets his hands on her.” No one but Sam knew the gender because it didn't seem to matter. Cas had his own predictions but never shared because he feels like it didn’t matter. While Dean always made sure to never let that thought cross his mind since it’s not like it’s going to change anything.

“Sam, you do understand what you're doing?” Dean tries to reason with Sam. But then again, Cas knows how to handle these kinds of situations. Better than Dean can ever manage.

“Look, this is keeping a kid that's half human and half archangel. A being that could bring the universe to it’s knees. This is no joke.”

“I know this already. You don't understand where I’m coming from. I don’t care that her other father is the devil, I just won’t stand behind the fact that I have to give her away. I will go down fighting for the rest of my life. And I hope you will be by my side because I can't do this on my own.” Sam sighs he also hopes that maybe he finally got to Dean.

“I don’t know about this, I don't like this plan. It's not the safe thing to do.” Sam doesn't get the chance to reason with Dean. Bobby and Jody walk into the room and now in the moment Dean can recall overhearing a phone call Bobby was having. He told Jody over the phone that Sam was finally in labor so she felt like she had to make her way to the bunker.

Since Mary was unable to provide Sam with any motherly involved tasks. And it didn’t help that John was the only person that was alive but he was never present. There was always something more important than Sam and Dean.

Over the course of the past nine months Jody and Sam's relationship began to blossom. The two got so close that once Sam's pregnancy was confirmed Jody was the first person Sam called. But then again it wasn't like there was someone else Sam felt comfortable contacting. And Dean was off the list since he was too busy processing the news, so Sam couldn't ask for some comfort from him.

She understood him, and for the first time since Jess, Sam felt like he wasn't some fucked up abomination, but he felt appreciated

“Hey.” Bobby doesn’t stay in the room and he shuts the door close once Jody fully steps in.  “You look like crap.” Sam moans out and bites his lip, a contraction comes back and so does the urge to yell. Dean rubs Sam's shoulder as he battles through the minute long contraction. The smile that was once on Jody's face was now replaced with a worried frown.

“Fuck you.” Sam playfully curses throwing his head back onto the bed frame. “What are you doing here?” It is a silly question since the answer is kind of obvious. Jody wasn't planning on missing the birth, and she wasn't especially going to not be there for Sam in probably the most important time in his life. Sam needs her more than he ever thought.

Jody makes her way closer to where Sam is laying down and where Dean is. She then grabs one of the many now damp rags that were scattered all over the bed.

“I almost forgot about the pregnancy brain." Jody uses the rag to wipe the sweat off of Sam's face and the base of his neck. "How are you holding up?" Dean took this as a cue to move from his post next to Sam's head, and stand alongside where Cas was. He was no longer towering over Sam's bottom half but in the bathroom gathering some last minute things. Sam nor Jody noticed that Dean had moved, too engrossed in their own conversation.

"Dean." Cas didn't even look up to meet Dean's eyes, his attention was on the contents in his own hands. Even though Castiel has been in Dean's life for a long time now, he still gets confused by his dialogue.

"Cas." Things have been kind of awkward lately, since not too long ago Dean finally got the balls and told Cas how he truly felt. Cas didn't really understand what Dean meant but after some more talks Cas admitted to feeling the same way. So now they were official but only to themselves but then again literally everyone already knew. There is no need to come out and say anything which is a relief to Dean.

"I was making sure we have all the materials we need but a thought came to my mind." The two men finally made eye contact and if Sam wasn't currently giving birth, Dean is sure that the two of them would be all over each other. "Do you ever want to have a child together?" The thought of having a family with anyone never appeared in Dean's mind. He was always dead set on just living his life in no kind of direction. He never had some kind of order in his life.

The only thing he knew was; keep Sam alive.

But now that Sam is no longer that six month old baby that witnessed their mother get burned alive on a ceiling. But he is now someone who is in their early thirties that is going through the process of having his first and probably only child into the world under the most fucked up circumstances.

So now the only thing he knew changed, and now it's; keep yourself alive.

"I guess the thought never really crossed my mind. But I think it would be nice to have one or maybe a couple rugrats running around the bunker." Dean grins happily at that thought and Cas joins him.

"I'll make it my word to grant that wish. Once we are done with all this," Cas gestures to his surroundings. "is that alright with you?" Dean looks away from Cas' eyes and glances out of the bathroom door to see Jody comforting Sam through yet another contraction.

He then takes it in and tries to only paint the picture of Cas holding a bundle, a baby that has pitch black hair, deep blue eyes, and the most perfect little smile. The image he created makes his heart swell with so much love that it's almost like he's trying to make up for all the joy he missed out on.

"Yes, that is more than alright with me."

“Well I would say that calling contractions a bitch would be a total understatement. They are so much worse than I ever imagined." Sam is still laying in bed this time Jody is by his side, she is no longer wearing the same shirt she came in with. Since Sam felt sick and threw up all over the carpeted floor and onto some of Jody.

“That's it, let out all the rage." Jody gives Sam some encouragement. And here he thought that contractions were painful but fighting the urge to bear down takes the cake. He wants to ignore Cas' orders about the pushing. The baby is still active currently doing somersaults, it distracts him from the pressure building near his rear. He almost didn't catch what new thing Dean was saying.

"I-I need to move, there is too much pressure." Sam whispers to Jody and into the pillow that he's gripping with all his strength. Cas recommended that he put a pillow in between his legs and at some point, his pants were discarded. Leaving his butt bare and if he moves even once then the blanket will expose him again. But it didn't matter since Cas, Dean and Jody were the only ones in the room with Sam. Bobby was not in the bunker but on a quick hunting trip just to kill some time. It's been more than a whole day of early labor. Dean and Jody are taking turns having twenty minute naps. And since Cas didn't need sleep he stayed with Sam.

"Alright how about we try the shower again." Cas suggests, Sam nods glancing up towards Dean since it's Jody's turn.

"I got you, buddy," Dean helps Sam to his feet as well as keeping close eyes and a hand on his back. Cas is getting the water to the right temperature so by the time Sam goes through the door, a contraction ends the quiet moment. "nice and deep breaths Sammy."

Sam is forced to put all his weight onto Dean, who doesn't seem to mind.

Cas watches the two brothers bond so well with each other. Whenever someone has the chance to see their relationship up close they end up feeling envy. Since there are very few siblings that are so close, most siblings would rather have nothing to do with one another. That isn't the case for Sam and Dean. Even when Sam began to get attached to the baby, Dean still loves him. There are very few moments that he says that because Sam already knows that information.

"Before you go into the shower I want to check you." Once the contraction ends Dean places Sam down on the toilet seat, so he can undress him leaving him in butt naked. Cas wearing a fresh pair of gloves, ready to check Sam again. Sam doesn't say anything, he just lets Dean and Cas lower him into the bathtub. The shower head is spraying hot water towards Sam's back. It gives him some relief along with helping with the back pain he's been getting along with all the labor related pains.

Sam mentally wonders if normal labor is supposed to hurt this bad but then again there were no guides out there that has any information on what a labor with a half angel, half human offspring would be like.

"Please tell me we're close to the end." Dean mumbles, Cas hears it clearly while Sam is too busy controlling his breathing to care. He lets them move him around taking full control of his movements. Almost like he is a limp noodle.

"He's making progress, slowly-"

"-Slowly? Cas we don't have time for slow, we need this to speed the hell up!" Somehow Dean manages to keep his voice down while his tone displays how upset he is. Cas sighs looking back down at Sam, who is in a squatting position fully naked with his back facing Cas and Dean as his face is near the wet sides of the bathtub.

For the most part he has been fairly quiet only letting out a few moans here and there, along with screams when the contraction intensified. For the most part Sam has been laboring on his own every now and then he reaches out for someone's hand or he cries for someone to massage his aching back.

Whenever the contraction finally lets go of the tight hold it had on him, Sam would just breathe out and not say a word.

He's been in bed for a long time only getting up to use the bathroom when he felt a sensation that was like peeing. He would sit on the toilet with his underwear pulled down to his feet, with his legs wide open.

His head was low, his long strands of hair followed the motion as well. Dean lost count of how many times he had to retie Sam's hair into a bun removing it from his damp face. Even Cas had to help as well.

For Cas this is the first time he got close and personal with a birth of an archangel. He heard stories from fellow angles that assisted the birth or even some that got to hold the child. Now it was his turn, he should feel excited but in all honesty he's terrified.

Sure he has a lot of information however it doesn't matter how many books he reads, he doesn't feel prepared.

It doesn't help that this is a human giving birth something that is so foreign to him and even to everyone in the room.

When Cas first found out about Sam's pregnancy he urged them to go straight to a hospital and have him take care of it. So they could not put Cas in this position. But the Winchesters are stubborn and overly protective so it wasn't a surprise to Cas when he learned about the birth plan.

"Ah, this isn't working-" Sam cries, lifting his head from the new spot so now his back to no longer facing the two other people in the room. But now his face, more like the top of his head is facing Dean and Cas. He tilts his head back, screwing his eyes shut tight, some tears roll down his face, and the sounds of his labored breathing follows after. Dean reaches down to his bare back and kneads into it hoping it gives Sam some relief. Sam seems to enjoy it since his moans get lower and his breathing becomes more regular.

Cas watches from a far and thinks to himself ´they could have done this alone.´

"I-I feel the head," Sam gasps out once he pulls his hand out from under him. "oh my God I need to push." Sam says without any hesitation. His sentence sets alarms of panic to go off in Dean and Cas' head. Without any thought process Cas reaches down into the tub and checks Sam's dilatation.

"It's time." Cas says, this starts a chain of events. Dean stays by Sam's side in the bathroom as Cas runs towards the living room where Bobby, Crowley, Charlie, and Kevin are to inform them that Sam is about to start pushing. He doesn't wait for anyone to say anything, he makes his way back into the room.

Sam is still in the tub but Dean isn't by his side, but he is now back in the bedroom, putting towels all over the bed as well as a small towel for the baby. He finishes he fixes up the devil trap and all the wards just as Cas walks back into the bathroom, Sam is no longer in a squat but now he is on all fours, still in the tub. The once clear water is now a light red Cas hopes that the blood dripping out of him is from Sam and not from the baby.

"Holy shit." Dean looks at Sam just as worried as Cas. "Should we move him? There are no wards in here he’ll be able to sense the baby." For a brief moment Cas forgets that this isn't just some random archangel birth, this is the birth of the devil's child.

"We have to move him, if he's here then Lucifer can just walk in without any warning."

"Speak of the devil!" Before they know it Lucifer is in the bathroom, but Sam doesn't seem to react since he is too busy going through another contraction along with trying to hold back from pushing.

"What do you want." Dean is the first one to say anything and he keeps his voice steady. Lucifer laughs at Dean and for a second this moment doesn't seem real. No matter how many encounters they had with supernatural creatures, this moment feels the strangest. Both he and Cas feel unprepared but also defeated in a way.

"I'm here to collect what is mine." He points at the bathtub where Sam is recovering from a contraction. That's when Sam finally notices the new person in the room, his eyes are forced open not believing the slight before him.

He isn't ready to give the baby up, he needs more time, just a few more minutes. He screams in his head crying out to anyone that would listen to him. He knows keeping her isn't an opinion but maybe he could hold her for a couple seconds. A minute would be nice to meet the baby that he's been growing for the last couple months. And in that time he will apologize to her for bringing her into this life. He knows that if the circumstances were different that he would live a happy life with her by his side.

To be a family.

It's all he wants, all he needs.

"She isn't yours, she's mine." Sam manages to get the attention of everyone in the room. "You will not take her, I swear if you even lay a finger on her, I will kill you myself." Sam curses looking Lucifer dead in the eyes, he may look like he is not scared but in his mind he is telling himself to keep calm. It comforts Sam to think that Lucifer can't hurt Sam, not until he gives birth so he uses that to his advantage.

"I didn't take you for the joking kind, thought that was all Dean." Lucifer looks at Sam and then back at Dean, his words send chills down everyone's spine. "However," He turns to Sam "you honestly think you can keep my own child away from me? That is the dumbest thing I heard all day." He is just inches away from the tub and from the trap he and Jody secretly made earlier. "Also she? I'm supposed to be having a son, not a daughter."

"You're not having anything, this is my child. You will never see her. I will die protecting her from you." Sam spits but then smiles since Lucifer is standing right under the trap. Sam grabs the lighter and matches he kept on the side of the tub, enlightening a ring around Lucifer. "You lose" Sam doesn't get to see his reaction since he is in the middle of giving birth, but for once he doesn't feel scared, he now feels excited. There is commotion going on next to him but he doesn't give it any thought, he just rubs his swollen stomach and smiles.

"Sam, Cas and Dean are taking care of Lucifer," Jody is by Sam's side replacing the space where Lucifer was not that long ago. "you're fully dilated, should we move to the bed?" Sam nods as Jody helps him up from the tub and wraps him in a towel to at least give him some privacy.

When Sam is back on the bed with a thin blanket covering his legs that Jody has his hands under. Dean and Cas come back into the room with more supplies and even some bottles of water and energy bars. Cas stands next to Jody since the two agreed that they would both deliver the baby. While Dean returns to his spot next to Sam's head.

"Whenever you're ready." Jody places his hands a few inches away from Sam's opening, where what she and Cas guess is a head is slowly coming out.

So far Jody knows what she's doing since she went through childbirth herself. And Cas doesn't know what he's supposed to be doing but it seems to be going smoothly. Sam on the other hand isn't doing so well, he knew that the birthing part was going to be a challenge. But this is nothing like he read in the books, or heard from the countless overheard conversations.

"That attaboy, keep going." Sam is still on his back with his whole body exposed to everyone in the room.

Dean hasn't left Sam’s side, every once in a while Dean makes Sam drink some water along with wiping his sweaty face with a cold rag.

There are so many things Sam wants to do and say but at this very moment all he wants is to get this baby out for good.

The words don't dare to leave his lips so he goes back to pinning his chin to his chest. He even forgets that he has legs. Somehow he is single handily keeping his legs up by keeping his hands on the back of his thighs. It feels like pushing goes on for days, push after push, contraction after contraction, moan after moan.

But still no baby.

"I-I, can’t, make it stop-" Sam sobs, releasing his hold on his thighs along with resting his head on the stack of pillows behind him. Dean tries to offer him some water and Cas takes a look at Sam's opening mentally figuring out what he can do to help.

"Come on Sam, deep breath in." This time Jody is the one who says something, she's been pretty much quiet putting all her attention on Sam's opening. "I can just barely see the top of the head." This sentence should give Sam joy but all it does is cause him to feel like there is a hole in his chest. A pit in his chest made up of doubt, fear, exhaustion and even sadness. When the next contraction peaks once again Sam takes a deep breath.

"I'm so tired, please stop." Sam whines once again, throwing his head back into the pillows. Dean doesn't make it in time to catch his head in order to stop him from delaying this any longer.

"You have to keep going champ you're almost there." Dean encourages Sam the best he can, there isn't a lot he can say. There aren't exactly any words out there that say, ´sorry you are in pain and in labor giving birth to Satan's kid!´

"Something isn't right. He isn't making any progress, what should we do?" Cas asks Jody.

"We can trying moving him into another position." Sam doesn't react, nor does he help Dean and Cas turn him over. They put him on all fours the towel is long forgotten, tossed on the floor collecting dust alongside all the other discarded objects. Jody keeps a hand on Sam's back and another inches away from his opening. Cas was getting more clean towels and tripple checking that they have everything.

"Can, I please push?" Sam's question is muffled from the pillow below his chest, so he goes for another push. The head begins to slowly ease out of Sam, Jody and Cas can both clearly see something dark all on top of the head. It could either be hair or maybe blood, but anyways at least more of the baby is coming out. Cas thinks that it will fully come out but then Sam stops pushing so it goes back inside. Erasing any progress Sam made only seconds ago.

"Sam you need to give longer pushes, the head keeps going back in when you stop. Take a really big breath and give a really long push." Jody knows she is being a little too firm.

"Just like that!" Cas prizes as the forehead comes into view along with the eyes, the top of the lips are just moments away from coming out. Sam stops for no longer than a second to take a quick breath then goes back to pushing.

"Ngh!" Sam cries "Get-the-f-uck out!" His cries are loud and everyone in the next room can definitely heard him. Sam tries to give an apology but he is unable to when a new pain goes through him.

“The head is out!” Jody yells overcome with joy while Sam on the other hand, doesn’t have the strength to celebrate. Since he is too busy trying to keep his breathing regulated. “Take a small break, I need to check if the umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck.” While Jody is feeling around Sam’s hole and around the neck of the baby, Dean is wiping sweat from Sam in order to cool him down. He is also telling him stories to keep his mood up and to prevent him from passing out.

“Bobby is working on getting you some blood since you are losing quite a lot of it. But don’t you worry, you are going to be just fine. The both of you.” The last part puts a giant but weak smile on Sam’s face.

“Okay Sam the cord is no longer wrapped around her neck, you are good to push again.” Sam does as he is told by giving another long push. More of a neck comes into view as a result Jody gives a grin, and so does everyone else in the room. Sam is still on all fours with tears and sweating staining the sheets below him.

‘It’s almost over, just a little more’. Sam thinks as he takes yet another breath from pushing. ‘Just a little more and it will be all over.’

Pop! The sound of one of her shoulders being born is heard, and Sam feels every bit.

“Fuck!” Sam gives another powerful cry of distress.

“One more shoulder to go Sam!"

"Dean makes sure the salt ring is still together, and makes sure you have a match on you at all times. We can’t take any chances.” Dean moves himself from Sam’s side once again to do all the things Cas ordered him to do.

“Everything is all set.” Dean comes back to his side by Sam. “Push Sammy.”

This is the final moment, the homestretch.

After this moment life as it is will change. A new life will join Sam’s side, and although that is exciting it is also terrifying. If it was up to him right now he would be collecting his thoughts in order to try and muster up the words to prepare his only daughter for the life she’s going to be forced to live.

Sam, and even Dean knows that her life will be far from normal but at the same time they will both try to give her the life she deserves.

There was a point early into Sam’s pregnancy that Dean wished that his brother wasn’t so stubborn. The original plan was when the baby was born, Cas would make sure to mask her from Lucifer in order for her to be dropped off at an orphanage. That way she wouldn’t be forcefully dragged into Sam and Dean’s dangerous lifestyle, she would be safe

But that is too painful for Sam and it didn’t help that he already has a bond with his daughter

So the new plan was Sam would raise her to a place that was so far away from the bunker or any place that anyone would dare to look. Dean didn’t like this plan but it wasn’t like there were many options.

Although he is still holding onto the thought of taking the baby from Sam deep in the night and giving her away to a family. So that way he and Sam would be off any demon radar. But then again Dean knew Sam would never forgive him if he did that.

“Fuck!” Sam is once again screaming from pain, this time it is a new and much louder type of scream. It almost cracks Dean to cry but he knows that he should stay strong not only for Sam’s sake but also for his own.

Both Jody and Cas are forced to assist the birth of the first nephilim in centuries and not to mention the fact that they are putting themselves at risk. Dean envies them but he also can’t help feeling a strong sense of pride towards his brother.

“Okay the second and final shoulder is out, I need you to give me small pushes to avoid any kind of tearing.” Sam doesn’t hear what Jody says, too far in the moment to stop. He can feel more of his daughter burst out of him and all he wants is to finish and be done with all of this.

“Get the fuck out!” Sam is covered head to toe in both his own tears and sweat, and a new layer joins the previous one. But no matter how many tears roll down his face, or how much sweat covers him, he knows he would do it a million times again if that meant that he would be gifted yet another beautiful baby.

A baby that is his and his only, he doesn’t have to worry about the threat of Lucifer.

“Here she comes!” All he worries about is reaching underneath the blanket covering his legs so he could catch his daughter before anyone would get their hands on her.

Her wails are muffled from laying on top of Sam’s suddenly shirtless chest. He recalls Jody telling Dean to remove his shirt since skin-to-skin is so important.

Sam is no longer on all fours but he is now on his back from the help of Cas and Dean. Jody also is softly whipping off blood and fluids that got all over the new person in the room with a nearby towel.

“Hi baby.” Those were the first words Sam ever said to his child and he knows she hears it since her cries settle down to soft wipers. Almost as if she could recognize her father’s voice.

“Congratulations Sam, he is perfect.” Cas announces.

"He?" Sam asks shocked. For his whole pregnancy Sam could have sworn that he was having a girl. But it's not like it matters Sam is still going to love his son as hard as he possibly can. Jody is also just as surprised as Sam.

"Well would you look at that! What a nice surprise." Jody's response gets a smile out of Sam.

Jody is finishing up stitching up Sam since he did in fact tear, not too bad but bad enough that it requires stitches. Dean still hasn’t said anything and just like Sam he is taking in the baby’s presence. Even though Dean is more than hesitant on keeping the baby he couldn’t help but feel attached to his nephew.

“Congrats, dad.” After Dean said that it unlocked Sam out of his trance, he glanced to his side where Dean is kneeling. He was trying to get a better look at the once wailing baby in his brother's arms. Sam didn’t notice the tears in his brother's eyes until he looked him in the eyes. “You did amazing, I’m proud of you Sammy.”

Sam didn’t say anything since he was still railed up with emotions. But he didn’t need to say anything since Dean knew what he was going to say, ‘I couldn't have done it without you, so thank you.’ So Dean gave Sam a nod mentally telling him that he understood.

It hasn’t been longer than twenty minutes after Sam gave birth that Dean walks in holding something that is light green and small in his hands, then Sam puts the puzzle pieces together and tears follow after.

"It's the only thing they had that wasn't too tacky. And it is the best I could do since it is four in the morning.” Dean hands Sam the onesie, he now notices how at the collar it is outlined in white. And that there is a matching light green hat attached to it, there are also two big bags of diapers at Dean’s feet. Sam can only hope that he grabbed the other essentials but all he can do for now is stare in awe of the baby resting in his arms.

“Thanks.” Sam’s voice is still horse from the yelling he did not too long ago, along with the cries of relief.

He doesn’t even look up at Dean, his whole attention is on the not so little baby sleeping in his arms. He is still red since he is covered in Sam’s blood along with his head still being the shape of a cone since he was squeezed out of Sam’s tight hole. But in his eyes he is the most perfect thing in all of existence.

“Just to let you know that Bobby and Charlie are dying to meet this kid. Are you feeling up to it?” Sam still doesn’t look up at Dean and he doesn’t even notice that Jody's are no longer still deep inside of his injured lower half.

“Dean,” Jody speaks softly and hopes that Dean gets the memo. “Let’s leave Sam alone for now.” She is no longer touching around Sam and her gloves are clean as if they were brand new. Before Dean could protest Cas was now pulling him with him and Jody towards the ajar door.

“We’ll be right outside Sammy, just holler if you need anything. Alright?” Sam doesn’t answer and he doesn’t give a reaction, not even when the bedroom door makes a loud noise from closing. Soon enough the pain of labor seems like a distant memory when he is alone with his son for the first time.

“Sorry I thought you were a girl. Could you forgive your old man?" He doesn't respond. "Even if you didn't say anything I am going to take that as a yes." The baby in his arms finally opens his eyes so now Sam is making eyes contact with the identical pair of hazel eyes. "Well buddy now we have to quickly brainstorm you a name. Since I don't think the name Jessica really suits you anymore.”

The only time Sam has said his original name out loud was the very first time he felt a kick. He was looking at baby name books and when he said that name out loud it was almost like he was responding to Sam.

Ever since that moment Sam knew that he wanted to name his child that. It was either that or he give in to Dean who joked around by calling her Mercedes. Sam then remembers the back up name he had just in case he was wrong about the gender. He was glad that he prepared for something that was possibly never going to be a reality.

"Happy birthday Jack, Jack Winchester." It was a common name and the only reason Sam remembered it was because he remembered it since it was some character's name.

But then again if things were different Sam would stick with the name Jessica for one reason; he needs to keep the memory of Jess somewhat alive, and once he was healed he would take Jack down to Jess’ grave. Since after all they did have the right to meet each other.

“I’m so sorry that you have to live in this cruel world, that would do anything and everything to take you away from me. But don’t worry I will die before I let them even look at you. I promise that you will be safe and that nothing will separate us.” Jack lets out a quiet whine and once Sam gives him a kiss, the whine stops before it could get louder and in more distress. “I got you forever and always.”
