Dying is a mercy you don't deserve

Summary:

“I know power, Dreamie, I indulged you in it, handed it to you on a diamond platter.” Sapnap reminds and it's true, for as long as Sapnap can remember, he was the one handing Dream the corpses of monarchs and leaders.

or,

Dream escapes and these are the events that follow.

Work Text:

“You won’t kill me.” Dream says and he’s so confident as he takes in Sapnap’s shaky posture. He seems hurt, clutching his side that’s tinted red and Dream doesn’t allow the jolt of concern to flow through him.  Sapnap only tilts his head, the sword he’s holding loosening.

“What happened to you?” Sapnap finally asks and Dream finds himself surprised at the saddened tone Sapnap displays. He expected anger and malice, expected the Nether born human to rage and burn, but instead he kept his distance, holding an enchanted netherite sword loosely in his hands.

“Power is a wonderful thing, Pandas.” The nickname slips easily, like if they weren’t about to fight for their lives. Sapnap flinches, the nickname brings memories of better times where Sapnap didn’t dread waking up and having to remind his lover who he was or argue with the other on who left first (it was Quackity, but the arguments always end with Sapnap taking the fall).

“I know power, Dreamie, I indulged you in it, handed it to you on a diamond platter.” Sapnap reminds and it's true, for as long as Sapnap can remember, he was the one handing Dream the corpses of monarchs and leaders.

Dream only tilts his head, the days of Sapnap showing up and dumping the bodies of corrupt men and women at his feet. He remembers that Sapnap, remembers the bloodlust that coursed through his body and the very same bloodlust he manipulated to keep the young boy in his control. He won’t deny that he loved Sapnap, he loved his fierce best friend, always willing to lay his life down without a second thought, but along the way, he simply became a weapon.

Dream nods, “It’s true. I won’t deny that, but that was replaceable power, this is absolute power.”

Sapnap tightens his grip on his sword, lifting the heavy sword forged by his own hands. He knows the only way to end this was in the life of his former friend, his once brother that he would’ve fought to give the world, because once upon a time, Dream deserved the world.

He points the sword in Dream’s direction, the tip aimed at his throat, “I know when you die, the server goes down with you. I was there, hunched by your side as we wrote the code. We created a world for safety, and you let a ragtag group of Europeans take that from you because deep down, you knew this was how it was going to end, and you saw no reason to prolong it.” Sapnap was always smart, Dream thinks, always the one to put the pieces together long before anyone else can.

“Are you going to do anything? Besides running your mouth?” Dream grins at the flames in Sapnap’s eyes and he knows the curling red feeling of the bloodlust as his eyes tinge red. Dream runs towards him, but before he can reach him, his body jerks backwards.

Lowering his bow, George jumps down the hill he was perched on. He approaches the two on light feet, keeping his bow armed as Sapnap tugs him close and George lets himself be comforted by the warmth Sapnap emites.

The arrow sticks out from Dream’s right side, not intended to kill, but to at the very least, keep him down. Dream rasps, the arrow was dipped in something, weakness maybe, as the fatigue hits him hard.

There’s a loud screech from somewhere and George sighs as he pulls away just as XD materializes in front of them, anguish deep in his body form.

“What did you do?” Under the distorted voice was fear and George held the god’s arm, pulling the focus off Dream and onto him.

“Hey there D.” George says softly, his voice unintentionally calming down the three of them. The god looks at him and George knows he’s scared, knows what this means for him.

The god wasn’t necessarily a bad entity, all he wanted to know was about human nature and unfortunately, this was part of it. George pulls the entity to the side, standing on some discarded stone blocks to match the god’s towering height.

He leaned his head against the god’s forehead, “Remember what I told you? Sometimes there are bad people that need to be killed? Well, Dream is a bad person. You saw the damage he did. Saw the way those kids flinch at the sight of you.”

XD remembers meeting Tommy by accident and how the kid literally passed out in front of him causing XD to panic. He admired the blonde boy from afar, the dark cloud never leaving him as he caused his own form of controlled chaos. Later on, by extension, he met Tubbo and Ranboo. Tubbo, chaos’s incarnate, knew all there was to explosives and machinery and Ranboo knew stories that can only be told through endspeak. He was rather fond of them, of the way they managed to conquer everything with stride.

“I’ll lose you.” XD whispers and the fear is prominent now and a part of George hurts as he pulls away. His connection to XD was meant to be merely a lost soul signed to a powerful god, but along the way, George found comfort in the god as he taught him the way humans lived. XD became a companion of sorts, living and staying by his side.

George shot another arrow when he heard Dream groan. The weakness potion was stronger then the regular one, brewed personally by Tommy Innit. Dream twitched, the effects making him nauseous as the sky above him swirled.

“You found me in this world, in this lifetime, in this universe, you’ll do it again. My soul is yours until the end of time, remember?” XD nods because of course he remembers, he made the contract that the human signed wordlessly.

“Georgie.” Dream rasps, his body twitching as George pulls away and walks the small distance to Dream’s weak body.

“You deserve so much worse, Dream. Worse then what you have been given.” George spat, “We could’ve worked past this had you let us help you but no, you had to go and become what you despised. We could’ve been the happy little family we were when this server started, we could have had everything and you know what, maybe, one day, when the gods forgive you and send you back down, we’ll be reunited in a world where you have no power, no control.”

Sapnap stood above him, sword at his neck, “I wish this could’ve had another outcome, another ending. This is the end of our story until the gods return you to us.” The sword goes in smoothly, the sound echoing around the empty area.

The sound of a portal opening made the two turn around, a blue green portal that looked eerily similar to an End portal. A familiar crown popped up, duo colored eyes following. XD made a rumbling noise and Ranboo nodded.

“Follow me, the server will crumble in a few minutes.” Sapnap stepped away, grabbing George who sent a sad look at the god who merely waved from where he stood over Dream’s body. The two stood in front of the portal, Ranboo extending a clawed hand to them. Sapnap grabbed it, letting the cold feeling of Ranboo’s hand ground him as they stepped into the portal.

The world around them disappeared into a void with endless stars and tall towers of obsidian. Above those towers was a castle and the Endermen around them bowed their heads. Ranboo nodded back, motioning the two to follow him.

“Welcome to the Elstra, my kingdom.” Ranboo said as he navigated his way towards the towers.

“I’ll be taking you to the portal that will take us to a server.” Ranboo stepped through the tower and instead of following the steep stairs, he opened another door and stepped through where another portal waited for them. It was white and pink, with vines wrapped around it, wisterias and hibiscus flowers clinging to the portal and vines.

Ranboo walked up the steps and waited for Sapnap and George before jumping in.

They were greeted by a bright sun and the overwhelming smell of flowers.

“‘Boo! Thank god you’re back!” They whirled around, finding Tubbo floating towards them, small bee wings holding him up.

Ranboo grinned at them and they noticed that Ranboo looked more Endermen. There was a loud laugh and the two turned, seeing Tommy glide towards them, doing a slow MLG in front of them, a wide grin on his face as his small wings ruffled. He looked better, happier, safer.
