Work Text:
“Do you smell that?” Tohru asks as she tilts her chin up and sniffs the air audibly.
Kyo raises a brow, wondering why she would randomly ask that question, but after taking a deep breath in, he knows what she is talking about.
“The rain is coming…” The both say in unison. Tohru giggles happily at the small coincidence and gentle heat spreads across Kyo’s cheeks as a blush blossoms along his skin. Kyo squeezes his wife’s hand in his softly as they continue their walk through their neighborhood.
“O-Oh! We need to hurry home!” Tohru panics with soft urgency. She turns her head to look up at Kyo and her eyes are wide. “I put out some laundry this morning to dry before we went on our walk!” She speaks almost too quickly for Kyo to understand what she’s saying. But he lightly taps his knuckles against the top of her head. “Calm down. We’re almost home. I don’t think the rain will beat us there,” he reassures her with a tender smile.
“If we end up getting caught in the rain, don’t act like I didn’t try to rush back home,” Tohru teases playfully, as she encircles her free arm around Kyo’s arm. “We didn’t bring along an umbrella with us today because the forecast didn’t say anything about rain this morning.” As if the pair isn’t already close enough, Tohru makes it happen and she steps to the side to rest her head on his shoulder.
“Well it is spring. The weather is always unpredictable during this time of year,” Kyo mentions as he leans down slightly to place a kiss on the top of Tohru’s head.
“I remember a while back I was talking to Hatori and we were talking about how when the snow melts it turns into Spring. Even after the Winter’s bitter cold and all the snow, it will always melt and bring along Spring,” Tohru recollects, her voice resonating the fondness of that memory that she held dear to her. “I told him I loved Spring the most.” She nods her head against his shoulder.
“Every day, no matter the season, it is always Spring,” Kyo tells her matter of factly, but this causes Tohru to pull her head away from his shoulder and look at him curiously. “Why is that?” She asks.
“Whenever you smile, it’s like when a flower blooms. Every time that you smile, I always think to myself, ‘Ah, that smile is so beautiful. I’ll never get tired of seeing it.’” The orange-haired man muses as he stares forward, a smile spreading on his lips.
Tohru blushes then buries her face into his shoulder. “Th-Thank you for your such kind words,” she tells him as she feels such happiness bubble in her chest from hearing her husband’s sweet sentiment.
Kyo lets out a breathy chuckle and squeezes her hand again. “No need to thank me. You know I would shower you with all the praise in the world because you deserve it.”
The couple continues their walk, trudging up the final, slightly steep hill. Kyo was beginning to feel fatigued, which he usually never did whenever he’d return home from the dojo. His eyes widen and his head jerks up when his ears pick up on a faint sound that seemed to be getting louder with every fleeting second.
“Tohru, I think we might want to start running,” Kyo suggests as he releases her hand and places his hand on the small of her back.
“E-Eh? Now you want to rush home?” Tohru stops in her tracks and looks at him. But as she finishes her question, a large droplet of rain falls onto her forehead. She flinches slightly, her eyes closing as a few more start to fall from the grey clouds that they didn’t notice had been rolling in behind them. “The laundry!!!” She exclaims and that makes her take off to quickly make it up the rest of the hill.
Kyo can’t keep up with his wife as his fatigue starts to really settle in as the rain starts to soak through his clothes. Tohru has her hands above her head as if that would efficiently give her coverage from the rain. She approaches their home and she hops onto the engawa to escape from the rain, putting her arms down to her side. Despite this unfortunate event, Tohru still finds the positive and she turns around to face Kyo, offering her hand that she extends out for him. “Looks like the rain beat us home,” she states with a bright smile on her face. Then she pauses and she looks like she has one other thing to add. When Kyo is about to ask, she speaks up, “Want to dance in the rain?” She tilts her head to the side.
Grumbling, Kyo finally catches up and puts his hand in hers as he joins her under the protection of the roof of their home. “No, not really,” he responds in a grumpy tone. He didn’t like getting wet. He hates when his clothes stick to his body and his hair mattes to his forehead. “Oh, come on, Kyo~ Just a quick dance?” Her small laugh is a trill that sends a shiver down Kyo’s back. How could she be so optimistic when she was just worrying about their laundry. “But the laundry,” he reminds her.
With a shrug of her shoulders, she responds: “The laundry is soaked by now. I’ll have to wash them again.”
The two of them stand on the engawa for a short passing moment to enjoy the fresh scent that fills the air, the rain washing away all the impurities of the earth. Kyo pulls Tohru back under the rain that has started to calm down into a harmless drizzle. With a giggle, Tohru follows along with Kyo. The two step onto the damp grassy area in front of their small koi pond. Kyo rests one of his free hand on her waist, as he brings the hand that is holding hers up to his lips to kiss the back of her hand.
Tohru is blushing darkly as she places a soft hand on his shoulder. Kyo holds out their hands to the side and he meets eyes with her. Even though she knows that Kyo is uncomfortable with being soaked in the rain, she is grateful that he would still follow along with her silly suggestions. She stares into his eyes, which looked like liquid amber, filled with so much adoration for her. The two of them share a chaste smile and they dance to the soft sound of the wind blowing through the trees in the distance.
Quietly, Tohru hums to a slow song that she remembers hearing the other day when she was browsing through the grocery store. Kyo still has his smile tugging at his lips as he leans forward at the waist to rest his forehead on Tohru’s shoulder. He lets the quiet song fill his ears and he basks in this soft and romantic moment shared between the two of them. The rain finally passes and it ends just as quickly as it came. When Tohru falls quiet, Kyo pulls away from her shoulder before leaning back in to press a kiss onto her soft and inviting lips. She softly returns the kiss, but it doesn’t last too long.
He trails his lips to her ear and nips at her earlobe before whispering, “Did you enjoy that?”
“Mm! That was so much fun, Kyo~” She stifles a happy laugh and she pulls away from him. “Why don’t we head inside now?”
“Yes, please. I want to take a hot shower then take a nap,” Kyo jokes.
“Okay. While you shower, I’ll go take care of the laundry then..” She says with a nod of her head.
Kyo pulls her along to their front door, unlocks it, then slides it open. The two of them slip out of their shoes in the genkan. Kyo slips his hand out of hers as he disappears down the hallway to the bathroom and Tohru goes up the short staircase to the second floor. She takes a left along the corner and walks to the door that leads to their balcony. She gazes up at the sky, the clouds now broken and the blue hue reappearing. The sun starts to come back out and shines down on Tohru. She enjoys the warmth when its light kisses her skin. She inhales deeply, then finally tends to the laundry she had been worried about earlier.
