“And then she smiled, and that’s what I’m after. A smile in her eyes, the sound of her laughter. Happy to listen, happy to play, happily watching her drift away.” – Drift Away, Rebecca Sugar
Oikawa was unprepared for it, his smile. Watching his eyes squint and his cheeks puff out as he laughed was a sight to see. In all honesty, Oikawa could not remember the last time he had seen Kageyama’s smile, and gosh, did he want to see it again.
He sat up and rubbed the red spot on his forehead; his face was heating up from embarrassment as he heard the soft sound of Kageyama’s muffled laugh. He stood up quickly and stuck his arms out to stabilize himself before his face heated up more; Kageyama’s eyes glistened as he laughed, his hand pressed firmly against his lips as the soft giggles oozed from between his fingers. And Oikawa was awe-stricken. Even though middle school and all high school, he had never seen Kageyama look so beautiful than in that moment.
And in a second, he had memorized every part of his smile. From his barely noticeable dimples to his faded-out freckles that lightly dusted the sides of his eyes. The way his smile caused his nose to scrunch up and his eyebrows to furrow in. His cheeks raised, and his eyes squinted while small tears glistened on his long eyelashes that hung over his eyes beautifully.
And in those few seconds, his eyes widened, and he suddenly became very aware of his increasing heart rate, unable to control the goosebumps and his flushed skin. And he suddenly also became very conscious that Kageyama was laughing at him. Oikawa made him smile. Despite it being injuring himself, he made the stoic, cold Kageyama laugh with his whole being. To the point where his beautiful blue eyes glistened and were coated with tears.
His hair fell in front of his eyes, creating a shadow over his face. His hair was puffy and staticky, standing up every which way, ultimately resulting from the volleyball game they had just been playing. Even in such a state, his beauty had yet to falter, ultimately enhancing the natural beauty of his face shape.
Oikawa’s stomach twisted, and he suddenly felt butterflies dancing in his stomach. He sputtered once he realized that Kageyama was doubling over from laughing and reached out to stabilize him. Kageyama sucked in breaths, his smile reaching from ear to ear before he looked up at Oikawa with lidded, hooded eyes and laughed. “You looked so dumb!” his voice was high-pitched and was interrupted by laughter once again. Oikawa was dumbfounded as he stared at the pink that dusted his cheeks and the bridge of his nose.
Kageyama was beautiful.
