Eye of the Beholder

Summary:

Miyuki ( quite literally ) could not see what the big deal was with him going without his glasses for a day, but he's willing to try it at his boyfriend's insistence. It's also this day that he finds out that the internet's pretty thirsty for him.

Work Text:

“Kazuya, why do you wear glasses all the time?”

Kazuya looks up from the book he’s reading to stare at his boyfriend. Why did he wear glasses? “They’re fashionable,” he pauses to lean back in his chair and gives Mei a critical look, “it’s because I need them, obviously. Y’know, to see.”

The blonde just rolls his eyes as he sits up on Kazuya’s bed. “I know that, I mean why don’t you just wear contacts?”

It’s a fair question, considering that Kazuya’s got a box of prescription contacts on him. Though those are only for games, and he never really gave thought to wearing them in his daily life. Beyond that, Kazuya’s worn his glasses since he was a baby, he didn’t know anything else. “Dunno, I’m too used to wearing glasses. It’d feel weird to not have them on, I guess.”

Mei hums in thought for a moment, thinking deeply before gasping at his own idea. “Well we got today off, why don’t you just wear contacts today? Just as a trial run!”

“A trial run for what?” Kazuya’s unsure of what Mei’s getting at and what the exact purpose was to seeing him without his glasses, but he supposes he could humor his boyfriend just this once. So he goes to the bathroom and slips his contacts in, folding his glasses and carefully setting them on the shelf. Kazuya stares at his reflection in the mirror, feeling somewhat uncomfortable with seeing himself without his glasses or any type of eyewear. Obviously nothing has changed, but he felt almost naked in a way, uncertain and a tad insecure of leaving without arguably the most vital thing he needed.

It’s almost worth it though when he sees Mei’s reaction. He raises an eyebrow at the blonde, vaguely wondering why he was the shade of a tomato when he didn’t do anything that drastic with his appearance. It makes a smirk grow on his lips either way, and he takes the opportunity to slide up next to his boyfriend on the bed. This makes Mei even more flustered, though he still looks irritated at the sudden turn of events.

“Oh, what’s this? Didn’t know seeing me without glasses made you act like a fangirl. If you wanted to see me without my glasses you could’ve just said so~”

“That’s not it, you ass. You just… look different is all.”

Kazuya tilts his head to the side, confused by the admission. Was Mei feeling alright? He literally didn’t even look that different, unless his general aura felt different? Either way, Mei becomes more flustered at Kazuya’s actions, and he hurries to stand up and grab his bag. Clearing his throat, he turns back to look at the catcher, now seeming like his normal self again.

“Well, enough of that. C’mon, we gotta go grocery shopping.”

There’s no incident after that. Kazuya’s glad for that at least, and he falls easily back into his routine, though he did involuntarily move to push up his glasses, only to find his face bare. Eventually Miyuki just settles for stuffing his hands in the pocket of his hoodie, lacing his fingers together in the soft wool. Unlike Kazuya, who was dressed for comfort in his hoodie and some comfy jeans, Mei was dressed like he actually planned on going out. Dressed in a pale red sweater and in a nice fitting pair of jeans, Kazuya lets his gaze drift across his boyfriend’s lithe body. Feeling his stare, blue eyes shift to meet amber ones, and Mei lets a smile cross his face before leaving his hand open to Kazuya could intertwine them.

The drive to the grocery store is short luckily, given how their apartment was relatively close to it and they lived a fair bit away from the main hub of Tokyo. It also had the added benefit of them not being easily recognizable, given how the most of the frequent shoppers were old people and single parents that didn’t have enough time for sports. Which was fine for Mei and Kazuya, they enjoyed having some quiet time without having cameras in their faces.

They settle into an easy routine as they gather food for the next two weeks, mosing through the aisles in no real hurry. Honestly it’s most Kazuya getting the healthy food and things for actual meals considering he was the cook most of the time, with Mei being in charge of getting the snacks and candy ( which was just for him really, but Kazuya made sure to balance out Mei’s diet, for his sake ). Mei disappears to go to the bathroom once, leaving Kazuya to wander down some random aisle.

“Oh, hello there Miyu-chan.” the greeting comes from Ms. Chiyo, one of the regulars and all around a sweet old lady.

For not liking socially as much as someone his age should, Kazuya didn’t mind talking to Ms. Chiyo or any of the other regulars of the store. Which really says a lot because he rarely even talks to his friends as much as he talks to the little old grannies and whoever else wanders in.

At some point Mei finds him and wraps his arm around Kazuya’s waist, joining in on the conversation of Ms. Chiyo’s granddaughter that’s visiting from the countryside. “I don’t know where she is, but she’s here somewhere. She’s a fan of your team you know? I think it’s because you have such handsome boys on your team, you two included. She doesn’t really like sports otherwise, you see.” Mei and Kazuya laugh at that, though it’s not the first time they’ve heard tales of young people getting into sports watching because of the attractive players. ( Kazuya wouldn’t count himself among them necessarily, even though Mei and his fanclub would strongly disagree with that ).

They return home shortly after that, tossing their phones on the counter as they put away their groceries. Kazuya leaves his phone there as he begins to cook, though Mei gets on his after his shower. They stay in their comfortable silence for a few minutes until Mei gasps loudly, causing Kazuya to turn around and look at him questioningly.

“Oh my god, Kaz, you gotta look at this!” Mei scrambles out of his chair and over to the catcher, showing some tweet that looked mighty suspicious.

head empty, tanuki miyuki only @miyooks

TELL ME I’M NOT SEEING MIYUKI AND NARUMIYA TALKING TO MY GRAN???? INSIDE THE GROCERY STORE???? MIYUKI KAZUYA WITH NO GLASSES ON?????

[ the attached picture clearly shows Kazuya and Mei talking to an elderly Ms. Chiyo, the photo being taken from the next aisle over and apparently in between some cereal boxes. ]

Kazuya’s eyes widen at the stealthy picture, and a blush quickly bloomed across his cheeks at some of the comments people left. Mei was chattering in his ear about the surprise photo that must’ve been by Ms. Chiyo’s granddaughter, but all he could think about was the comments and how, ahem, graphic some of them were.

“Do people really think I’m that hot?” He blurts out, causing Mei to stop rambling to look at him like he just grew a second head.

“What? Are you serious? You know you’re hot, why are you surprised?”

“Well I know I’m not that bad looking, but I can’t believe people want me to mix their guts! Mei, what am I supposed to do with this information? Oh my god, were you blushing because you thought I was hot without my glasses too?!”

A loud laugh erupts from the blonde, Mei having to hold onto the counter to avoid falling over entirely. In his defense, it was pure comedy gold that Kazuya was having a revelation now of all times. Mei opts to hugging Kazuya instead, laughing softly in his ear as he calmed down.

“You’re hot with or without your glasses Kaz, it’s just that no one sees you without your glasses usually so it’s a big shock. It’s nice to see how thirsty everyone is for you and knowing you’re all mine.”

Kazuya lets out a quiet laugh at that, leaning down slightly to bury his nose in the crook of Mei’s neck. His heart clenched at the sudden possessiveness and the pure strangeness of what his attractiveness did to the wide expanse of the internet, but he supposed that he could get used to it.

“God if just a half blurry shot of you can get hundreds of thousands of retweets and likes, can you imagine what would happen if you posted a shirtless selfie? The internet might actually break."

“While that is tempting, I’m definitely not doing that.”
