Wei Wuxian had lost his child. In his own home. His husband was going to kill him. He had left the five-year-old in the living room, watching some kids show, so he could go and put together a snack for him. When he came back ten minutes later the TV was still going but Yuan was nowhere in sight. Now, he was wandering around the house, snack platter in hand, looking for the child. He had checked the basement and all the rooms twice and was getting ready to call his husband when he noticed the door to the garage was slightly ajar.
Pushing the door fully open with his hip, he looked in. His son was there. He had managed to get one of their lawn chairs out of their camping supply pile and was sitting in front of the wide-open garage door, watching the rain.
Wei Wuxian stared at him for a minute, waiting to see what he would do. But the young child just sat in the chair, legs pulled in tight to his chest, chin resting on his knees, watching the rain. Stepping a little closer he transferred the snack tray to one hand and fished his phone out of his pocket with the other. Snapping a quick photo of his son he sent it off to his husband.
By some miracle he managed to extract another chair out of the camping supply pile without dropping the snack platter or causing an avalanche of items. He set up the chair next to his son and sat down.
“Did you still want a snack, A-Yuan?” he asked, holding the platter in front of his son. Yuan grinned reaching forward to grab a couple of grapes before turning his attention back to the rain. Wei Wuxian gave him a small smile before grabbing a cube of cheese for himself.
“Is everything alright A-Yuan?”
Yuan nodded, reaching for some more grapes.
“A-Yi told me yesterday that when it rains it’s because the sky is sad!” Yuan exclaimed. “and when I’m sad you and dad don’t let me sit alone so I thought the sky would like to have someone sit with it too!” his smile fell though after this explanation and Wei Wuxian fought to keep the grin off his face.
“How come you still look so sad though, A-Yuan?” Yuan took a moment to answer his question as he finished eating the cracker he took.
“Well…. when you and dad sit with me, I get happy! And I stop crying! But…. the sky is still sad! And it keeps crying….” The boy turned to Wei Wuxian, pouting. Wei Wuxian smiled and ruffled his son’s hair.
“Well…. sometimes even if someone is sitting with you, your still sad. Even if the person sitting with you is your favourite person in the whole world, sometimes you just have to cry for as long as you need to. And there’s nothing wrong with that!” he wiped some crumbs off his son's face. “crying is good! I bet the sky greatly appreciates that you're sitting with it!”
Yuan smiled wide and nodded. The two were still there, picking from the snack platter when Lan Wanji came home half an hour later. Quietly he grabbed another chair from the pile and sat beside his son. The small family sat there, watching the rain until the small boy fell asleep.
