Are We Just Another Cold Case?

Summary:

When he first started, Kanbe Daisuke radiated so much arrogance Haru couldn’t even stand to be in the same room as him. Their contrasting personalities and detective methods clashed at every waking moment. They bickered so much that it was disrupting the entire department. But ever since they returned from their trip to Hong Kong a couple months ago, things had been a little…different.

Chapter Text

Haru was familiar with extended work nights, but recently they seemed to have been getting longer and longer. He had been reading through endless files on his laptop all day constantly running frustrated fingers through his hair. The case was about to go cold, and nothing frustrated him more than that. A deep voice finally broke his intense focus on the screen in front of him.

“Katou.” Haru looked up to see Kanbe standing over him. He had been so engrossed in the content for the past 9 hours he hadn’t had much time to talk to anyone today. He noticed how Kanbe’s eyes had dark circles underneath them, contrasting against his pale skin. “I left the casefile on your desk for you to review.”

"Alright, I’ll look at it when I’m done.” He rubbed at his tired eyes as a yawn ripped through him.

He watched Kanbe reach into his bag then, shuffling around the contents inside.

"Here.” He held out his hand, Haru noticing an espresso drink being thrusted at him. “You like these, right? Drink it, you look exhausted.”

A small smile came to Haru’s lips as he reached out to grab the caffeine he so desperately needed. Kanbe shrugged on his jacket then, turning on his heel and heading for the door.

“Thanks.” He called out after him. A slight wave was thrown his way as he watched him leave the office. He inspected the can wondering how he knew about his favorite coffee brand. He shrugged it off, popping open the tab and chugging it down.

"You guys have been getting along better recently.” Kamei mentioned, smirking in Haru’s direction.

“Oh, I guess.” He replied, trying to brush off the comment.  He stood up then to stretch out his sore muscles.

“I’m glad you guys are finally talking and working together instead of blowing up at each other all the time."

He flinched, remembering all the arguments that led to screaming and multiple curse words being said.

“Kanbe’s changed recently, don’t you think?”

“I haven’t noticed.” He lied, turning away and heading for his desk. Unfortunately, Kamei began to follow him closely, almost stepping on his heels.

“Well, it’s good to see you guys getting along now.” Haru felt tension between his shoulders as he continued to pry.

"We learned to tolerate each other. The guy still pisses me off.” He snarled. The way Kamei kept bugging him about Kanbe was starting to make him uncomfortable. He wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible, so he started cramming his things into his bag.

"Sure, Sure. Just remember to read the file before the end of the night. We have a lot of work to do tomorrow.” Kamei reminded him, shoving the paperwork Kanbe had left on his desk into a loose folder and handing it to him. Haru grabbed the folder from his hands then, seeing a smirk still plastered to his face.

“Right.”

As he stepped out onto the steps of the office, he noticed the snow lightly blanketing the ground. The shock of the frigid weather woke him up as he breathed in the cold air deeply. It felt refreshing as the wind gently blew snowflakes against his face.

He reached into his pocket to grab his phone, swiping it open to check his messages. He bit the inside of his cheek seeing the text he knew would be awaiting him.

11 tonight. I’ll pick you up.

His heart skipped a beat as he read the demand from Kanbe. He checked his watch which said 10:38pm, sighing as he also saw the broken clock face. Somehow, he had cracked the glass causing a few shards to fall out. He definitely needed a new one, but it still worked for now. He jogged towards his car, wrapping his scarf tight around his neck.

It was happening again. He wondered how many times it has been now. His heartbeat started to pick up as thoughts of the first time with Kanbe Daisuke began running through his mind.

The first time it had happened unexpectedly. He remembered how irritated he was as he flew with him on the short flight, watching the smug bastard sipping away on his whisky. Kanbe barely even looked in his direction, ignoring him the whole way there, which pissed him off even more. He had been tricked into being his partner for the case but before he figured it out the plane was already taking off towards a city that would introduce a circumstance he never would have predicted.

Before, and even during, the case they quarreled constantly. Arguing back and forth until the case had finally been solved. On the final night in the city, they checked into the hotel Kanbe had reserved earlier in the day.

Haru almost lost all his remaining sanity when the desk women handed him only one room key. He couldn't believe his ears when they started apologizing repeatedly, telling him that they had accidently booked only one room with a king-sized bed.

"Would you relax?" Kanbe chided, throwing his jacket over the bed as they walked into the room. It was a beautiful suite, a chandelier hanging from the ceiling and a steaming hot tub on the balcony. The bedroom stepped down into a small kitchen and room service had already been delivered.

"This is ridiculous, I'm not sharing this room with you." He snapped. The room was definitely for a couple, all it needed was rose petals covering the silky white bedspread.

"It's not that big of a deal, why are you constantly overreacting?" He scowled, his eyes watching Haru with annoyance as the taller boy refused to take off his jacket.

"Shut the fuck up, I'm not overreacting. It looks like a couple should be sleeping in here!"

"You're always freaking out over every little thing, it's honestly really annoying."

"And you're always such an uptight dick." He screamed back, his voice booming with rage. He had enough of his rude comments.

"Whatever, I don't really care what you think about me." He disregarded, reaching into his pocket and grabbing a cigarette. He placed it in his mouth, getting ready to light it.

"Don't you dare smoke that in here." He warned, his eyes sending a dark glare in Kanbe's direction.

"Who the fuck are you to tell me what to do?" He barked back, making the lighter spark a few times with his thumb.

Haru's eyes glinted with rage. He found himself stomping his way over to the darker haired man puffing in smoke and blowing it carelessly into the room. He grabbed his wrist and pulled the cigarette out of his mouth, a shocked expression covering his face now.

"You are so fucking disrespectful it makes me sick." Haru snapped, his hand grasping his wrist even tighter when a smirk formed on Kanbe's lips.

He had never been this close to him before and their eyes were locked in a hateful glare. The tension between them was building as they stood near each other.

But at this moment, Haru couldn't deny that Kanbe's face was really quite majestic. The pungency of his cologne invaded his nose, making his mind a little hazy. He noticed the softness of his skin and how it felt so warm like he was burning from his touch. He felt his lungs trying to suck in air, but he was struggling to catch his breath.

He instantly stepped back, dropping his wrist finding himself unsure of the feeling flickering inside him. His gut felt like it had lit with flames as he cast his gaze to the floor. He was unable to continue the staring contest with Kanbe's snarky face.

“I can see how flustered you are.” Kanbe’s voice was dark with eyes to match.

"I'm going to get another room." He mumbled feeling uncomfortable. He was getting ready to leave the romantic themed place behind, but before he could turn his body away, lips were being attached to his own.

His eyes shot wide as if electricity was sparking through his entire body. Hands gripped the sides of his arms feeling strong fingers pressing into him. A gasp left his lips as he was pushed away for a moment. He felt himself falling onto the bed behind him. Kanbe had pulled himself from his lips, Haru seeing his face turning from anger to lust in a matter of seconds. His eyebrows knitted together; his teeth clenched as he pressed Haru into the feather soft mattress.

Haru felt himself fighting back a blush as he felt Kanbe kissing aggressively at his neck now. He wanted to scream for him to stop but his body was aching for this new sensation. He wanted to call out to him, but no words found their way past his lips. They were trapped in his throat and he was choking on them.

His heart was hammering inside his chest, pounding so hard he thought his ribs were going to break. He felt an intense desire rush through his veins as Kanbe palmed him carefully in his now tighter pants.

He kissed him harder giving him approval to unbutton them. Their tongues collided, the kiss becoming desperate as they both grabbed at each other's clothes tearing them off. Haru hissed as a warm hand gripped him firmly, tugging up and down gently a couple times.

The sensation made him bite his tongue. The feeling of those nimble hands working him up and down made his toes curl. His mind was blank as he watched him kiss his way down his taut stomach leaving wet kisses on his tender skin.

Kanbe's eyes were shimmering with desire as he wasted no time before sucking him deep into his hot mouth. Haru moaned feeling the silky wetness encase him perfectly.  Those ocean blue eyes devouring him as he pulled off to lick the slit of his leaking tip.

"Kanbe." He gasped, his name instinctively falling from his lips. Kanbe tightened his grip, and Haru grasped his hair, halting him before he could deep throat him into heaven.

Kanbe pulled up again, leaning his arms on the side of Haru's head. His cheeks were flushed a deep red, gasping for air. His breath was hot, fanning over Haru's blissed out expression.

Both of their eyes were filled with questions which were left unanswered as Haru reached out to press their lips together again in a heated, frantic kiss.

There were barely any words spoken as their bodies tangled together that night. Just moans of immense pleasure and names being whispered into the darkness of the room.

The next morning was so uncomfortably awkward that Haru slipped out early to get breakfast on his own. They ended up having the hottest sex he had ever experienced, and he swore that the blush was never going to leave his face. He knew they had to talk about it at some point, but the thought of finding a new flight and moving towns did cross his mind a few times.

When he returned to the room, Kanbe was sitting at the end of the messy bed with his head resting in his hands. The muscles in his shoulders looked tight.

Haru gently closed the door, and Kanbe looked up seeing him standing awkwardly in the hallway.

“Hey.” Kanbe said, his voice was dark and raspy, making a shiver run up Haru’s spine, remembering the way his name sounded so desperate in that tone last night. He quickly shook away those thoughts, and walked over to the bed, sitting down next to him.

“We should talk.” Haru was short with his words, unsure of exactly what to say. He wanted to yell. He wanted to ask why the hell he had kissed him. He wanted to know why the hell that kiss made his lips tingle making him beg for more. He wanted to know why the hell he enjoyed it so much when he loathed his entire existence.

He heard a deep sigh leave the man next to him.

“Yeah.” He nodded, and Haru noticed the dark red circles rimming his eyes. He felt his heart twitch with more confusion, but he quickly looked away.

He had no idea what was happening. His mind was spinning, and he felt tense sitting this close to him after what occurred the night prior.

“I don’t know what happened.” Haru mentioned, rubbing his hands together nervously.

“We had sex.” He stated, and Haru bit his lip and rolled his eyes.

“Obviously.” He scoffed, standing up and walking to the balcony. Kanbe walked after him then, grabbing his wrist.

“Don’t get pissed and overreact.” He told him, and he wanted to scream at him, but he held back remembering the comments he had made yesterday about him overreacting.

“No one can know about this.” He said calmly instead, refusing to turn his head to look at him.

“I know.” He mumbled. His tone was cold as Haru ripped himself out of his grip. He began slamming his things into his suitcase, ingoing him the rest of the morning.

Nothing else was said, and they were back home in their own beds before they knew it.

The memories of the night were replaying over and over again in Haru’s head. It was amazing, and he hated how amazing it was. Even though it was probably one of the best sexual experiences he ever had, he promised himself that he would forget, and it would never happen again.

But now, he found himself once again face to face with a situation he was becoming all too familiar with. He couldn't properly understand or explain the way he felt about it. And now Kanbe was parked in his driveway, waiting for him to saunter down the icy steps.

Notes:
