Work Text:
Dazai smiles, linking their hands to lead Chuuya to the dance floor; Chuuya rolls his eyes, exasperated. Dazai snickers. "Come now, Chuuya, don't make such a face~"
"Who can blame me, having to dance with someone like you?"
It's a conversation they've had before, years ago, back when they were supposedly meant to be bonding as partners, but were rivals just as much; Kouyou having to painstakingly oversee their dancing lessons with one another. Learning one another's timing and movements, or so Mori had said, even though Chuuya was sure even then that someone - probably Mori himself - was just deriving a twisted pleasure from forcing them to put up with one another in such close proximity.
It hadn't even proven all that useful; they'd infiltrated few places via blending in during a dance, as it's not like they're all that common nowadays even among Yokohama's underground elite, and even those that were held, it was generally easier to just stay on the sidelines. Eyes off of them, don't draw attention. There had been a few such occasions hosted by the mafia itself where the skills had been somewhat useful, but only the basics; the more advanced types they'd been forced to learn had absolutely never been useful.
They're not, even now.
Chuuya feels bad for Kouyou, thinking back on it, forced to watch over them and prevent Chuuya from breaking Dazai's foot - or his face, when he got too annoying - and try to ensure they actually took something away from it. Yes, they had eventually calmed down, accepting that the lessons wouldn't just stop because they kept sniping at each other and mutually - silently - agreeing to cooperate to get through it faster, but that had taken time. She already hadn't even liked being called 'ane-san' by Chuuya, not wanting to be responsible for this fifteen year old out of nowhere, and to be made to effectively babysit him and Dazai... It's a wonder she didn't stab them both. Chuuya would have, in her shoes.
She really does have the patience of a saint.
Even now, seeing the soft smile on her face, Chuuya nevertheless knows she, too, must be reminiscing on those times. Catching his eyes, she sighs, playful, feigning exasperation, and Chuuya grins widely at her when she opens her eyes again.
It is weird, though, he'll give her that. To think they'd come so far...
"Hey, Chuuya~ Shouldn't you be looking only at me~?"
"So greedy," Chuuya teases, but looks to Dazai again, smiling warmly at him. "I was just thinking back to the first time we did this, so I was only thinking of you anyway."
Dazai twitches at that, not having expected the honesty, probably, which is pretty stupid, if Chuuya does say so himself.
It is their wedding day, after all. What's the harm in letting Dazai know exactly how much Chuuya's thinking of him?
It takes a second, but Dazai puffs his cheeks, childish. "... Chuuya's too powerful when he's straightforward, it's unfair."
"It's the same for you," Chuuya says, because really, it's worse when Dazai's honest. His whining is stupidly cute, somehow endearing now after years of it just making Chuuya want to punch him in the face, and although he's honest with his whining (when he whines about not being snuggled, when he whines that Chuuya's not paying attention to him, when he whines that he wants to kiss Chuuya more and more—), it's infinitely stronger when he just says it clearly.
"Oh? Then, stay with me."
Chuuya pauses, then laughs. "I already promised I would. You need to do the whole ceremony again?"
"That's not a bad idea. The first time still feels like it was a dream."
Not that it was legally binding, considering... various things, such as their identities and the law, but even so, they did do what they could, rings adorning their fingers, a precious few guests here to observe and celebrate with them. It's been peaceful in Yokohama, lately, after taking down the various groups after the Book who would have destroyed the country in their search. It took a long time, and working with Dazai over and over again through the course of it...
... Anyway. They're married now, official or not.
"Then, should I punch you to wake you up?"
"Eh! Chuuya still hasn't learned how the prince is supposed to wake up Snow White?"
"Still fixated on that fairytale, huh..."
Dazai winks at him. "Well, Chuuya makes an exceptionally charming prince, so nobody can blame me."
"Shameless flirt."
"I'm allowed to flirt with my husband!"
Husband. That honestly makes it feel more surreal to Chuuya than anything else so far. To think, they'd come so far, from their youth filled with pointless bickering, misunderstandings borne of lack of communication when they were usually so good at reading one another for everything else... The near-death experiences, caused by one another almost as often as their enemies, Dazai disappearing for four years, Dazai reappearing in the most annoying way possible... Chuuya doing everything he could to subtly help Dazai stay away from the mafia in that time... Dazai going to jail, the near destruction of both the mafia and the ADA...
The first time they'd fallen into bed together, relieved and agitated and breathless from the rush of nearly having lost one another. That first collision of their lips, desperate and demanding, don't leave me. The jumbled emotions, the desperate rejections and refusals, neither one of them the committing type. The same old dance of approaching and distancing from one another, Chuuya wanting more but knowing Dazai's lack of ability to commit comes from trauma rather than simple practicality like Chuuya's, not wanting to scare him off for good.
Dazai, taking that leap, making the first move. Admitting it scares him, but not wanting to keep running away anymore.
... Chuuya had always insisting on leading first, when they were younger, some modicum of control over Dazai in a time where he generally didn't have any. Now, he rests his cheek against Dazai's collar bone, listening to the beat of his heart as they shift to familiar positions, muscle-memory ingrained from long ago. The waltz, the first dance they'd learned, stomping on one anothers' feet more often than not.
This time, he'll give Dazai the lead first. Just this once, as thanks for him taking the first step to where they are now.
"I love you, Chuuya."
"Mm... I love you too, Osamu."
The music starts.
