Work Text:

gentle waves lapped at the white sand, the salty smell of the ocean brushing against your face. this was the call of the sea, rushing forward before retreating in its indecisive choice to come unto the land or not. it was white noise, merely television snow as you gazed at the studious man beside you, his eyes fluttering from a starfish to his notepad, jotting down info with a messy scrawl. his handwriting was so much better than yours and you were convinced it had to do with star platinum. you stared at him for a little longer, perched on the driftwood before you stood and walked closer to the water. jotaro looked up at you, curious to see where you'd go, before he got bored of watching you and went back to the starfish.

you scooped up a handful of seawater and watched it drip through your cupped hands. it was like your love for jotaro. it would've been perfectly fine if the water were in a bowl, but on your own, it just melted through with such ease that it seemed a foolish shame to try and stop it. especially since he had no intention of reciprocating: not that you hated him for it, far from it. you couldn't imagine being bitter at him. you were certain your own heart would shrivel and die if you ever felt a single bitter thought directed at him. but here you were, sorry soul, playing with seawater as waves drenched your shoes and ankles, the love of your life behind you.

you looked forward, letting the wind run its loving fingers through your hair. maybe this was an omen, symbolic of you leaving jotaro behind and heading for your own horizon. you gave a soft laugh at that, watching a storm brew at the ends of the earth. jotaro glanced up at you once more, oceanic eyes boring into your back.

"are you laughing?" you turned back, a smile on your lips.

"not at you, of course. it was...just a silly thought." you walked back to him, crouching beside him and staring at the starfish.

"so, learn anything new about the little guy?" as jotaro started on his informative spiel that he usually did when you asked him about ocean life, you watched his eyes sparkle and glisten. you loved that about him, just like you loved everything else. you could move forward, and it was probably healthier for you to than to brood over a love lost that was never there, but why would you leave a place where you were almost perfectly content? you were perfectly fine being his comrade and friend if you couldn't be with him. no, the horizon would be left undiscovered by your own choice and the universe would just have to deal with it.

Notes:
