he can see the kind of archduke joshua would have become, had he gone back to reclaim rosaria, had the night of the flames not happened. the kind that their father had been, almost visionary in his ability to see the future that is to come, how the various hands that would shape it needed to be guided.

Summary
In the distant past, Joshua had explained, entire nations had bowed to the awesome power of the Phoenix, and the firebird had waged war with numerous other gods in battles that shook and scorched the earth. Compared to that, the quiet life in a remote temple that did not even see that many worshippers was perhaps unimpressive—but Joshua had a different perspective.
"I rather think even the mighty Phoenix would prefer a peaceful existence, don't you?" he would say, the corners of his eyes crinkling as he smiled at Clive.
