Memories in the sand

Chapter 5: is to come before us

Chapter Text

Jihoon woke up to the sound of his phone ringing from under his pillow, he forced his eyes to open and saw that it was 4AM in the morning, and Soonyoung was calling him.

“What do you want?” He croaked out, rubbing the sleep away from his eyes.

“I can’t sleep.”

“Well I can and I was so tell me what you need before you drag me into your misery.”

“Can I sleep over?” Jihoon paused for a moment.

“No.”

“Can you open your window for me then?” Jihoon just wanted to bury his face in his pillow and scream in frustration.

“You’re an asshole.”

Soonyoung laughs, “Thanks, Ji.”

Jihoon stands up from his bed and pulls his windows up to see Soonyoung waving at him, fully awake.

As soon as Soonyoung manages to climb up, he flops down Jihoon’s bed and plays a song on his phone. “Soonyoung I really want to sleep.”

“But I can’t sleep.”

“I’m going to kick you out, I swear.” Jihoon whines, having no choice but to lie down as the soft music fills his ears. “Since when did you start listening to One Direction?”

“You like One direction,” Soonyoung says beside him, and he laughs.

“I do.” Silence filled the room again, until Jihoon felt Soonyoung shift beside him, arms making their way around his waist. “Soonyoung-”

He cut himself off when he saw that the other began to shake, the arm that he raised up to smack the other away turned into a soft touch. “Why won’t you just tell me what’s wrong? Is it Chan?”

Soonyoung shook his head. “Well, you’re not normally like this and I’m worried.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Hey, you don’t have to be sorry. Look at me.” Jihoon wriggles down to be on the same level as Soonyoung’s face, he puts two hands on the other’s head to make him look up. “You’re not my Soonyoung, are you?”

“W-what?”

Jihoon’s face crumpled into a serious look, “I think you were possessed by some demon or something.”

“I’m crying here and that’s your way of comforting me?” JIhoon laughs at him, tired eyes turning into crescents but for the first time in their friendship, Jihoon was the one who pulled him back in a hug.

“No, I don’t really know how to comfort you but it’s okay to cry.” Jihoon’s hands make their way to the back of his head, “It’s okay to be sad and have off days, you don’t have to be the happy Soonyoung all the time.”

Soonyoung just buried his face more into Jihoon’s neck as he cried, “I’m sorry.”

“If I hear those words from you again I’m really kicking you out.” Jihoon threatens him, “But really, if you get sad again you can always come to me and cry but don’t expect good advice, hm?”

“Yeah.”

“Look at me.” Soonyoung complies, Jihoon’s hands make their way to the sides of his face again, thumbs wiping the tears away from under his eyes. “No matter how sad or weird you are, I’ll be here.”

“I know.”

“Now smile.” Soonyoung gave him a sad one, but that was enough. “There’s my Soonyoung. Now, let’s sleep… we still have to surprise Cheol with the tickets tomorrow!”

Jihoon’s hands never left him, and his own arms never left his waist, Jihoon fell asleep like that. Hands on Soonyoung’s hair.

The sun was starting to rise when Soonyoung couldn’t keep his eyes open anymore. He looks up at Jihoon’s sleeping face and smiles.

“Jihoon…” He whispers to the person in front of him, no longer to the waves of the sea, no longer to the emptiness he calls the sky. “I love you.”

But Soonyoung still drowns himself in Jihoon’s warmth that morning, closing his eyes and letting the waves of Jihoon’s breathing take him back to where he belongs.

Soonyoung woke up with a gasp, he was facing the ocean as soon as he opened his eyes. Sun made his eyes hurt and the sand was rough under his palm.
He looked around and saw that his sandcastle was still there, the words were slightly fading because of the wind, but what caught his eye was Jihoon’s phone beside the empty bottle of liquor, Jihoon’s 8:30 AM alarm ringing through the speakers.

Soonyoung pushed himself up and grabbed the phone, wiping away the sand that stuck to it.

Was it a dream?

Soonyoung turns off the alarm, he walks over to the shore until the water begins to drench his shoes.

It wasn’t a dream, he refused to believe otherwise because he felt… lighter.

He looks at the phone in his hand and unlocks it, turning off every single alarm.

Before chucking it into the sea. He sighs, then the sigh turned into a laugh.

"Jihoon, I'm not so sad anymore."
