Chapter 4

Chapter Text

After a few minutes.. or hours of his eyes being closed the headache caught up to him. He stood up and walked to the bathroom. His room drowning him in yellow light,

Yellow.

Wills favourite colour.

His mind was set on thinking about Will for the rest of the night.

The room felt lopsided, seeming to tilt with each step Mike took. His head feeling as if it was attached to an extra long neck, the brain contained within his mind feeling as if it was moments behind each action he did.

After he finished in the bathroom and washed his hands, he just stared at himself. Not a lot of answers going through his head, but rather a lot of questions. The disgust he felt with the way he thought about El and Will causing his eyelashes to damped and stick together.

He walked into his room, feeling emptier and more lost than before. He locked his eyes on the phone once again, leaning down to speak into it- to will. One more time that night. He didn’t answer, instead a slow beep responded allowing him to read a message.

“Look Will, I don’t wanna be a jerk. I’m sorry man. I didn’t mean to yell, especially not drunk.. especially when I know how you feel about it. Will I really mean it, I’m sorry I

lo-“ he cut himself off with a fake throat clearing. “I’ll see you tomorrow!”

Mike rambled through his voice message, his words still slurping and slurring. He hoped that the throat sounds took the attention off his drunk mind slipping up. The party agreed to hang out tomorrow, they all needed to find distractions and that happened to be one another. As the phone was placed back on its stand that was placed on the desk Mike allowed himself to lightly tumble into bed.

The sun bled through his window almost instantly. He knew he’d been asleep a while but the head ache was telling him he needed to sleep again.

His body ached and tensed at the embarrassment of last nights late night calls and drinks. Before his mind had time to adjust to everything around him his door was thrown open by Nancy- who was holding the empty bottle he left downstairs.

“Be careful! That’s what I said- meaning hide it- hide it for our parents, Michael!”

Nancy squawked at him.

“I took the fall this time- Mom would kill me if she found out I gave it to you..”

she rambled.

Mike still lay sprawled out on the bed, just in boxers. He didn’t have time to cover up due to the speed Nancy talked and moved. That’s when his phone started ringing, Nancy moved to go answer it.

Mike, embarrassed, stood up- his headache worsening at the speed but that didn’t stop him- rushing towards the phone and picking it up before Nancy could.

“Hi Mike?”

Wills voice came through, quiet, calm- still laced with sleep. Turns out spending the whole night in the void, even while your body sleeps, takes a lot of energy.

“Hi.”

Mike answered, nonchalantly, hoping the things he said last night- which he can’t quite remember- weren’t too embarrassing.

“You don’t have to apologise, I’m sorry for hanging up so quickly, it’s just- mentioning El.. hurts me. And the fact you yelled and I could just tell you were drunk it was all too much, and I didn’t want to say anything mean so I just.. hung up. Thank you for your apology though! My mom’s calling me for breakfast but yeah- see you this after noon, Mike!”

Will rambled and rambled, never allowing the time to be silent. Will hung up before Mike could answer, causing him to slump back in his chair. What did he say.. or nearly say.. that made Will so flustered that you could hear it in his voice?

“What the heck was that about— and why you so red?”

Nancy piped up from the corner, Mike honestly had forgotten that she was there.

Today was already too much for Mike. He wished to burry himself in the ground until he died, or got over his feelings.. but it didn’t seem that wasn’t happening any time soon. Especially not with the suffocating guilt of his own bomb killing Wills sister. Jane didn’t deserve that, and she didn’t deserve to die without hearing the truth. She should have known years ago.

“I don’t know.. I got really sweaty last night- that’s probably why I’m red.”

He spoke standing up as he did so, reaching for his shirt he was going to wear that day.

“And I drunk called him last night- that’s why he called me, Nance.”

He continued.

Not a lie, not the full truth. Add it to the list of lies that happen to exist in Mikes word. Lying happens and he does it more than anyone else he can think of.
