Chapter Text
Trafalgar Law, a vampire that was hundreds of years old, wasn’t sure how exactly he ended up in this situation. Well, the more he thought about it the more he realized it all boiled down to one singular person, or rather one very annoying, very persistent werewolf, that which was named Luffy. That is how he ended up where he was sitting currently, surrounded by a bunch of people he didn’t know, feeling very uncomfortable and out of his element. He had only known Luffy for a couple of hours at most, but he was pretty sure wasn’t escaping him anytime soon.
After their little rendezvous in the park, Luffy had managed to convince Law - Law wanted to believe it was hard, but all things considered, it probably wasn’t. He was delirious and dying - to come back to his pack house. The pack house that Sanji had tried so hard to keep Law away from. Luffy obviously didn’t seem to care about this fact. Law wondered how many other werewolves would be joining them. Law was bound to go rabid anytime now, but Luffy didn’t care about that either. He probably thought he could kill Law easily if he tried anything or even if he couldn’t, the rest of his pack were sure to back him and help him finish the job. Law wasn’t sure if he was incredibly stupid or incredibly brave.
The pack house was quite a ways from the park. Luffy, Ace, Bepo, and Law, all packed into a single cab pickup truck. Ace being the one driving, Luffy in the middle chattering his head off, talking about all his friends that Law was about to meet. The older vampire tuned him out a while ago. He had already heard about most of his friends from Sanji anyway. Their motley crew of vampires, werewolves, and witches, all of them calling themselves Luffy’s pack. Law sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window as he watched the city go by. Bepo, of course, was sitting on his lap, but he seemed more interested in what Luffy was saying, oddly enough. Even though Bepo had been with them for a few days now, he seemed entranced by every word Luffy had to say. It was like some weird spell Luffy had, some strange ability to draw people in, with just words alone.
Soon they had left the city for a more rural part of town. It didn’t take them long to pull down a long dirt road. As they came to a stop, Law swore he saw something in the woods. A pitch black werewolf stared him down from the edge of the wood line. His piercing yellow eyes seemed to stare right into his soul. His lips seemed to curl back into more of a smile than a snarl. Law knew it was impossible for him to be alive, but his mind didn’t seem to want to accept that fact. “Vergo,” Law whispered. He wasn’t sure if he was scared or enraged. He wasn’t sure if his instincts were telling him to fight or jump into the driver’s seat and drive as far away as he could.
Law practically jumped out of his skin, when a hand was placed roughly on his shoulder, thankfully it was his good shoulder. He turned quickly, ready to fight off whoever was trying to attack him. His fangs were already poking into his lip, ready to sink into whoever was trying to attack. Thankfully, he still had some self control. It was Ace. At some point Luffy had already exited the truck, he must have climbed over Ace to get out, but that didn’t really surprise Law at all for some reason. His fangs slowly retracted back. It was just Ace.
“You, uh, good?” Ace questioned, looking past Law for a moment and out the window. Law’s head snapped back to the window, his eyes finding the tree line, but not finding Vergo. He ran his hand down his face and then scrubbed his eyes.
“I thought I saw…” his voice trailed off and he shook his head, “never mind.” He was losing his mind, but he wasn’t about to admit that outloud. What had Sanji said? Something about living his nightmares. He shivered at the thought. If Ace noticed he didn’t say anything.
He finally turned his eyes back to the front window. The property in front of him was different from what he was used to, but being trapped in a mansion, mostly underground for hundreds of years, anything would be different to him. There were several houses laid in a circle, in the center was another house that seemed more plain than the rest. All the others were personalized in some way. Most were brightly colored or had different little personal touches, like one house that had several tangerine trees planted around it.
So, that’s how he ended up, in that central house, surrounded by a bunch of people, supernatural or otherwise, he didn’t know. His only friend being Bepo, who watched the people argue over each other with increasing curiosity. Bepo seemed to be enjoying himself, at least that made one of them. Law certainly wasn’t.
Law slowly started to lose his patience and along with that gained a migraine. He took in a deep breath and he pressed his fingers into his closed eyes, trying to massage away the pain.
“We broke in once, we can break in again.” Ace said, around a mouth full of pizza. “I’m sure Pops wouldn’t mind letting some of the pack out again. I mean Doflamingo did try to kill his favorite son.” He said with a large grin.
Finally after that comment Law decided to break his silence. “It won’t be so easy a second time.” Law said, pulling his hand away from his face and staring down the faces in front of him. “You caught him off guard the first time. By now he,” Law paused for a moment, realizing that all eyes were now on him. He let out a loud sigh and shook his head, trying to come across as coherent and calm as he possibly could. “Doflamingo’s reach and knowledge spans far. He’s not some fledgling that can be taken advantage of. He’s smart and cunning. By now, he knows about what happened. He knows what happened to me. He won’t let a second attack happen so easily.” Law said. He found himself running his fingers through Bepo’s fur as he sat on his lap, like some sort of protector. Bepo purred softly, clearly not minding at all.
“He’ll be expecting you to come back.” A tall ravenette woman said. She held wisdom deep within her black eyes. Eyes that had Law blinking, he could have sworn for a moment he was staring Doffy down. He blinked his eyes, then realized he was once again seeing things. Her eyes weren’t black at all, but instead a vibrant blue, that reminded him more of Sanji’s than Doffy’s. She carried herself with a certain knowledge as well. She quickly put together what Law was saying. All that piled on with the fact that she was also clearly a vampire. So far seemed to be the smartest out of this whole pack. “If he’s expecting you to come back, he has likely preserved the body of the werewolf you killed. If he is as knowledgeable as you say, he likely knows of the cure. He knows you will go rabid soon and kill us all.” The woman said morbidly.
A darker skinned werewolf squeaked at the woman’s words. It sounded more like a sound befitting a pup. “Robin,” the werewolf whined, “don’t say such things.”
Luffy just laughed, like it was some joke. “Torao’s not gonna turn rabid. We’re gonna help him before he does.” He said, he looked right at Law and smiled that big smile of his. Law took a deep breath. He couldn’t figure out if he found it enduring or idiotic.
“Trafalgar was bitten approximately five days ago.” The ravenette woman spoke. “He doesn’t have much time left. We must act quickly if we want to save him.” She said. Law opened his mouth to protest such a thing, but was quickly cut off.
“Robin’s right.” The door to the pack house suddenly swung open. It was swung open, or maybe kicked, with such force it slammed into the adjacent wall and almost broke off the hinges. “You were stupid to bring him here, Luffy.” The blonde vampire particularly snarled, his fangs on full display to the young werewolf. It wouldn’t have been threatening if Law didn’t know that the vampire was in fact a part of Luffy’s pack. Law found this whole dynamic so strange. If this was any other pack this action would have been seen as a challenge and it would have quickly devolved into a fight. But Luffy didn’t seem to care, he seemed more excited that another one of his friends had showed up.
Law stiffened in his spot, when his eyes caught the figure that walked in behind the vampire. The large werewolf was black, those piercing yellow eyes stared right at Law. His hands balled into fists and Bepo hissed from under him. He would later come to realize that he was actually gripping Bepo’s fur so hard it forced a pained hiss from the familiar.
Suddenly, he was no longer in that pack house. He was standing in the forest on the edge of the Donquixote territory. Vergo was now standing in front of him, standing between him and freedom.
“Law,” a voice whispered to him and when he snapped his head to the side, he saw him standing there again. He was hallucinating, he knew he was hallucinating, but it felt so real. Just like it had been hundreds of years ago. Cora-san was standing next to him, looking down at him with that big stupid smile.
Vergo had been alive, even then, kept alive by some powerful witch at the time. Even then Doffy had friends in high places. So high they could keep someone like Vergo from aging like a normal werewolf. That didn’t matter now though, because he had caught the two trying to escape and now he was the only one standing between Law and freedom. He was so close to being free from his chains and Cora-san wasn’t about to let some dumb mutt stand in his way.
“Run, Law, go before the rest catch up. I’ll be right behind you.” He told Law. And Law was stupid, he was so stupid, that he believed him. He believed he could handle Vergo. The elite vampire was stronger than Vergo, at least he would have been, if Vergo had actually been alone. He stupidly believed he would be right behind him, so he ran. He ran through the forest, until he heard it. Those gunshots, that had him turning on his heels and running back. He knew that the gunshots meant one thing, Doffy had caught up and now he was going to seek his revenge. Guns weren’t enough to kill vampires, but with the right kind of wooden bullets, it could definitely pack a very painful sting. In the right place it could incapacitate a vampire long enough to get close enough to drive a steak through the vampire’s heart. That’s exactly what happened that night, that’s exactly what Law had run back to.
“Torao,” a voice suddenly knocked Law out of his hallucinations. He blinked his eyes and took in his surroundings, he wasn’t where he remembered being. Not when he had first succumbed to the hallucination at least. Where he was now seemed to be more befitting of his hallucination. He was in the forest, and it was dark, just like it had been that night. Luffy was standing in front of him, he looked worried. He was also stark naked, werewolves didn’t get the courtesy of keeping their clothes after they shifted. Which meant he must have followed Law’s scent in his wolf form, after what he assumed was him fleeing the pack house. Which had to have been hours ago, because it was light out only minutes ago and now it was dark. He must have switched to his human form knowing it would be easier to reason with Law that way. He didn’t seem to care that he was completely bare for the whole world to see, well at least for Law to see.
“Torao,” he tried again, taking a step closer. For some odd reason, Law was glad he used that strange nickname instead of his real name. It had snapped him out of it and now it kept him grounded. Law still took a step back though. He wanted to cry, he wanted to scream, but he didn’t do either.
Instead, he spoke, “aren’t you scared?” He questioned, staring right into those honey brown eyes.
Luffy shook his head and advanced even closer. Law kept stepping away, until he couldn’t anymore, his back hit a tree. He was trapped, but he didn’t feel threatened in the slightest. He was almost mad at how comforted he felt by the young werewolf’s presence.
“You don’t want to hurt me.” He said, so confidently, it might have pissed Law off had he been in any other situation. It pissed him off a little, but nearly as much as normal.
“You don’t know me.” He managed to say, but his normal bite was severely lacking.
“You saved my life. You saved my brother’s life. Torao’s a good guy.” He said, now standing directly in front of him. His eyes were blazing with determination. Law found it impossible to look away. He had known this werewolf for all of a couple of hours, but for some reason, for the first time in a long time, he cared. He cared about someone other than himself. He cared about someone other than his Bepo. This was different from any other relationship he had ever had.
He closed his eyes and shook his head. He hated how much he had gotten in his head. He hated him for how much he had made him drop his defenses. He hated him for being so headstrong and determined. He hated him…didn’t he?
“And you should have left me behind.” Law said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’m not worth saving, Luffy.”
The werewolf in front of him snarled and was suddenly gripping Law’s wrists so tightly, he was sure it would have bruised if he was anything other than supernatural. Law’s eyes snapped back open and he hissed softly from the pain. Golden eyes met honey brown, neither backing down from the challenge. “I don’t care if that’s what you think.” He said. “I’m going to save you!”
“I’m going to save you, Law! You’ll be free of this place.” Law felt a tear run down his cheek at the werewolf’s words. It’s like Luffy knew exactly what he was doing, exactly what he was saying. It was just like Cora-san all over again. His stomach sank to his toes at the thought.
“Listen to me!” Law suddenly snapped, trying to free his wrists from the werewolf’s grip, but he wasn’t given such a pleasure, if anything he was squeezing even harder. “He’ll kill you, you idiot. Don’t you realize what you’re doing is a suicide mission?” He said, trying to reason with him. ”You’ll die!” Just like he did.
Luffy smiled, that bright unabashed smile. It had Law’s dead, unbeating heart clenching painfully in his chest. “I’m not going to die. I’m gonna kick ‘Mingo’s ass!” He proclaimed.
“You’re an idiot.” He whispered.
He couldn’t have predicted what happened next. He wasn’t even sure how or why it happened. Maybe it was the heightened adrenaline filled state that they were both in. Maybe it was because Law hadn’t ever felt this way about anyone or anything before in his immortal life. Maybe it was because Law knew he was going to die anyway and his brain just said ‘fuck it’. Whatever it was, it didn’t really matter, because it happened all the same. He freed his wrists, finally, from Luffy’s grip and grabbed the sides of the werewolf’s face and leaned down, kissing his lips with bruising force. Luffy took it all in stride though. Law expected for the werewolf to push him away and become disgusted and call this whole thing off, but he didn’t. He slammed Law into the tree and quickly returned the kiss with the same intensity that Law had started with.
Suddenly, Law realized that Luffy was very much still naked. He pulled away and quickly looked down at the werewolf. “Maybe…” Law’s voice trailed off, trying not to stare too intently at the other man’s completely naked body. He had to admit that the small, but lean frame the other male possessed was very easy on the eyes, but now wasn’t the time. As much as Law’s brain was telling him ‘fuck it, he was going to die anyway’ he wasn’t going to do it in the woods. He had standards and twigs and leaves up his ass were not his idea of a good time.
Luffy suddenly seemed to realize the same. Even in the dark, Law could see his cheeks start to turn pink. He wasn’t about to admit out loud how cute it was.
“We should get back.” Law finally said. “We will need a plan, if you really want to go through with this.”
Luffy grinned again and nodded, agreeing. “Torao’s not going to freak out about me shifting, right?” Luffy asked. Law shook his head. Luffy took that as he cue to shift back into his wolf form. He was just as beautiful as Law remembered. His light brown fur matched his honey brown eyes, and his lean and muscular frame portrayed nothing less than a powerful creature. He looked up at Law, his lips curling back into a huge smile that only Luffy could give and not look threatening, even in this form.
“Let’s kick some ass.”
