    Summary

The master trains the apprentice. The apprentice kills the master and takes their place. The master takes an apprentice. It is the cycle of things, and the way all those like him do, your Supreme Leader creates his own downfall. He cultivates it, covets it, and it kills him.

It's not you. Of course it's not you.

It's truly something else to read a fic that's written before the second and third movies of the sequel trilogy were ever released. Knowing what happens changes the way you write. The same is true when you don't know what happens.

Seeing Ben Solo's redemption at the end of The Rise of Skywalker allows for a gentler interpretation of him. It makes him easier to write a redemption arc for. It makes his personality fuller, complete, more comprehensible. It allows the viewer to see him holistically. I did a whole speedrun while watching the movies, so the full view of Ben is the only one I'll ever see. I'll never have to sit and ponder on the TFA version of Ben only.

That's why this fic is so breathtakingly impressive. It's perfect. A masterful interpretation from the author regarding a character that seems so flawed and irredeemable, especially at the time this was written.

Although I usually read and bookmark fics that are largely emotion-based, and usually not the length of a full-blown novel (like holy crap that's so admirable to write this much), this fic in particular has me in a headlock. It's so whole. It has everything. Action. Character introspection. Backstory, elaboration, political systems, characterization, exposition rising action climax falling action resolution—everything.

Ben being ace. Ben's severe sensitivity to the Force. Ben's objective and factual explanation of everything horrible that happens in the First Order. The very human contemplation of why you ever made such a mistake when it's so obvious in retrospect that you could've just... not done it. It would've been so easy to do the right thing, really.

There are some characters from Star Wars: Rebels whom I never knew existed that show up in this fic, which makes it a little challenging to read, but I enjoyed it fully. Also, the characterization of everybody is insanely good. Rey, Finn, Leia, Luke—everybody is undeniably badass in how they maintain their morals and stand their ground.

I don't know what else to say. This fic is perfect. AO3 is perfect. Stuff like this is the reason why I haven't been reading published books (outside of school-issued texts) for months and months. Just fanfiction, because fanfics aren't deeply edited and they aren't condensed and they don't cater to the public like books do. They are written in the author's interests and shared with the people who are interested in the same topics, who willingly search for them. The Star Wars movies are fast-paced. The Star Wars novels are concise. How the original media spawned this raw, intense, thorough fic? That I don't know. People are geniuses. I love reading. I'm so happy.
