The Daughters of My Father's House

Work Text:

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

You’re the saint to whom I pray

When I’m lost and father’s used me

In a game I cannot play.

Tell me how to ride this storm out;

Brother is so far away;

Even if I’m told to speak

I don’t believe the words I say.

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

You’re a face that’s fading fast;

Shabbas dinners are so lonely,

Father’s eyes are overcast.

Tell me why I get so angry

When he will not let me past;

Every breath inside this household

Feels like it might be my last.

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

You are somehow at my side.

Why’d I die so early, Mama?

I’ve been kind, I’ve never lied…

Tell me how I got here Mama,

Was I such an awful bride?

Was I doomed to be a scapegoat;

Body cold, and cast aside?

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

You’re an anchor sorely missed;

Father chooses what the truth is,

Daughters held in iron fist.

Tell me how to show them reason,

He has what they can’t resist;

If this family falls to pieces

Why is it that I exist?

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

You’re an absence always here;

Growing older, growing meaner,

Growing into what men fear.

Tell me why I get so nasty;

When I want to smile I sneer;

Even I don’t love me Mama,

No one’s ever held shrews dear.

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

Give a sign in my defense;

I am but a lowly daughter

Slave to father’s cruel intents.

Tell me I’m a person Mama,

All are deaf to common sense:

Athens’ ancient law may kill me;

Why is loving an offense?

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

It’s your solace that I seek;

No one else stands by me Mama,

Why it is my word’s so weak?

Tell me why they don’t believe me,

Didn’t they want mild and meek?

Even father’s turned against me

Not a soul will hear me speak.

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

You’re the truth that steers me straight,

You’re the voice within me saying

“I am mistress of my fate”.

Tell me how to weather sorrow,

I’m the object of such hate;

Grant me power to right things Mama,

Any day could be too late.

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

You’re the strength I badly need

I must follow father’s footsteps,

Else my death will be decreed.

Tell me tyrants get what’s coming,

Tell me they do not succeed;

Forest paths are long and winding,

No one knows where they may lead.

Mama, Mama, can you hear me?

You’re a shape from long ago

Frozen vaguely in my memory

In a feminine tableau.

Tell me where it is I come from

Solitude’s my greatest foe;

Though I love this life, this island:

There’s so much that I don’t know

Mama, Mama, can you hear us?

We’re your girls you never knew;

Trapped by wishes, love, a father,

Trying to stay strong, stay true.

You’re our guiding compass Mama,

When we’re scared you help us through;

We can feel your love above us;

Always we will think of you.
