Finite Time

Chapter Text

Year: 2015

POV: Hoshino Asumi

“Okay, so this is the way to the teacher’s room,” the much taller man calls out. He stops at the other side of the hallway and looks around. I giggle to myself as I watch him consider whether or not he should walk back.

Before he can decide I wave at him, “I’m over here!” He’s about to walk back to me when I breathe out and appear beside him. “It would be great if you could walk slower, I’ve got little legs sir.”

“I’m sorry about that Hoshino.” He begins walking forward again, but at a much slower pace than before.

I chuckle a little and intertwine my fingers behind my head. “It’s fine. Everyone does it. No one realises how short I am until I’m standing right next to them and suddenly it’s like I’ve been cut in half.” I side squint up at the older man and watch as he opens the door to the room.

“I must warn you…” he begins, stepping over my comment to head inside.

“Yaga-san!” a cheery voice interrupts. The principal stops speaking for a bit and sighs.

“That’s Gojo Satoru. Don’t…”

A long man with stark white hair walks up behind him, a perfectly round pair of glasses sitting on the bridge of his nose. Bright blue eyes look me up and down, eyebrows raised.

“So you must be the new third year teacher.” His cheery voice from earlier lowers and a smirk paints his fair features. “I wasn’t expecting the new teacher to be so… interesting.”

“Gojo. Don’t.” Yaga says, pushing the man aside. He walks into the room, dragging me along with him and stops at a table near the centre of the room. “This here is your desk, Hoshino.”

“Heyyy! You’re right in front of me!” Satoru chimes in, practically skipping to the desk in front of mine. “I heard the previous first and third year teachers got together before. You wanna make that a tradition?” He tilts his head towards me and raises his eyebrows, a crooked smirk plastered on his face.

“Sat–” Principal Yaga begins.

“I’m not one for traditions, but sure thing, hot stuff. When are you free?” I say, plopping down onto my chair and leaning in, resting my chin on my propped up arm. Time spent with this person will be entertaining to say the least.

There’s a second of still silence and the man laughs. “Interesting.”

I smile and lean back on my chair. “What? Are you taking back your offer?” I tease.

“How does Saturday at 12 sound? I’ve got other… appointments before that.”

“Let me get back to you on that.” I wink. “I’m a busy person myself.”

Our teasing gets interrupted when water suddenly falls around Satoru and splashes onto me. We both turn to our right to see a very annoyed Principal.

“Ah. Shit.” We whisper.

“If you two are done, we still have some business to attend to.”

“Awww c’mon Principal, can’t you just finish everything tomorrow??? Hoshino and I were planning a date!!!” Satoru whines.

The boxy man turns to me and sighs. “Well, that was the end of your tour anyway.  You’re free to do whatever you want. But…” He leans in close to my ear. “I would not recommend doing anything with Gojo. He’s…”

“I can hear you.” Satoru chimes in, mouth pursed into a pout, hand on his heart. “That hurts my feelings! I’d never do anything that would put our new precious teacher in harm’s way!”

“I highly doubt that.” Yaga says, getting up. “Anyway, I’ll be taking my leave. Feel free to do whatever, Hoshino. It’s great to have you part of the team.”

I wave at him as he leaves the room and listen until his footsteps are gone. I immediately turn to the man next to me and look him up and down. “How are you not wet?”

“It’s my ability.”

“What do you mean?”

“I control the infinity around me and can infinitely slow things down to never touch me.”

“Oh. So like real numbers!” I chime in thinking back to one of the maths textbooks I read a few months ago. “Uncountable infinity and all that jazz.”

“Exactly…” He says. “You’re a smart one, aren’t you?”

I wave my hand in front of my face and smile. “Nah. I doubt I even know how to read. I think I’ve just remembered a fuckton of words.”

The taller man laughs and my poor excuse of a joke. “Do you want to see the ability in action?”

I perk up from my desk. “Abso-fucking-lutely. What do I do?”

He holds his hand out in front of him and waves at me. “Hold my hand.”

“Uhh. Okay.” I reach out to touch him and when I’m a mere few centimetres away, my hand stops, unable to move any further. I push and push harder against this invisible wall that was stopping my hand and nothing. “Fascinating!” I exclaim, taking my hand back. An idea pops into my head and I smile super wide. “Well, you’ve shown me yours, you wanna see mine?” I ask, practically jumping out of my chair.

“It’s only fair. What do you want me to do?”

“Nothing. Just keep your infinity thing going. I wanna try something.” I straighten myself in front of him and concentrate. I bring my hand up to the stopping point Satoru has made with his infinity and breath out, closing my eyes.

Would you like to break Cursed Technique, Limitless?

My fingers begin to curl around his and his hand recoils. “How did you do that?”

I smile, and rest my chin on my hand, proud of myself. “It’s my ability.” I mimic.

“No one’s ever done that before.” His voice was low, almost to a whisper. “That’s impossible.”

“Well, seems like I’m an exception.” I wink. I sigh and smile a soft smile. “But don’t worry, I won’t ever do that unless you explicitly allow me to. But that’s my ability! It’s honestly a little similar to yours. But mine doesn’t stop at infinity. I control the universe.” I stick my tongue out.

“Who are you?”

“Special Grade sorcerer, Hoshino Asumi. Though you probably know me as The Game Master.”
