Khun Phanuwat,

I saw your advertisement in last week's issue saying that you specialise in delicate runework. Money is not an issue for me—I have a lot of it to spare—but I live in an unfortunate part of Bangkok where I have no access to any good runemasters who can do what I require of them.

Enclosed is a list of the items and runes that I need carved. Please let me know at your earliest convenience whether you can take on the project and give me your price list so that I can send you my camera. I am losing money the longer I wait.

Sincerely,

Phubodin Rachatrakul

Khun Phubodin,

Thank you for requesting my services. In reply of the letter of 10 May, I have enclosed herewith my list of prices and the services I offer. In good faith, I would like to warn you that I have never worked on a camera before—my services have mostly been rendered on items of clothing and the occasional telephone.

If you will still be requiring my services, I request that you send your camera in by courier so I can get started as soon as it arrives.

Faithfully,

Phanuwat Chotiwat

Khun Phanuwat,

A million times thank you. My camera has returned to me safe and sound—blessed be the National Post courier service. The runework you have done is so fine. I am in awe of such delicate needlework. (Do you still use needles? I have, unfortunately, no use of getting much runework done and have no idea how it works.) The fine silver thread works just so with the main body. Thank you for managing to find it in such short time.

You said you've no experience with cameras, right? This is a new model called the Voïgtlander Vitessa L. Can you believe such a small thing cost almost 2000 baht? (<- This is not meant to show off my wealth.) In my gratitude, I have decided that in repayment to services rendered most satisfactorily, along with your payment I have included a few photographs to brighten up your house. I am a part-time photographer you see.

Sincerely,

Phubodin Rachatrakul

Khun Phubodin,

I am delighted that my work was to your liking. Working on a camera was a new experience. I am glad you didn’t tell me the price beforehand—and I would beg that you please proceed to keep me in the dark about it. If I had known, I wouldn’t have dared to touch it. (And we don’t use needles anymore. Or at least I don’t. A local artificer made me a carving tool that is entirely electrical and contained within itself.)

Your 20 baht have arrived safely. I have sent out your change by postal money order and you should receive it within a few days. I know you have a lot of money to spare, but I would urge that you use this method of sending money to others in the future as well—it is infinitely safer. The Royal Postal Service isn't the most trustworthy. (Speaking of which, I would also like to suggest you use a private courier for your lenses.)

Faithfully,

Phanuwat Chotiwat

Thank you for your photographs. I am most appreciative.

Khun Phanuwat,

You shouldn’t have sent me the change, you could’ve just credited it to my account. I thought you should know that your waterproof rune came in mighty handy when my friend—if he can even be called that after today—dropped my brand-new camera into a small bucket of water. Can you believe it? The chance of it falling into that particular bucket out of the whole wide road were so little, and yet. Luckily, not all of the film was damaged. His girlfriend gave him a good talking to, as he deserved. (She's the smartest one of us, honestly.)

Since you appreciated the last photographs, I thought I might as well include one of today’s debacle. This is the front entrance of the fair we were at today. (We had the most delicious sweets and I managed to snag a good deal on some imported jeans. Very expensive and very thick, I don't suggest buying a set.)

I have shipped out my latest lens for the same runes as last time and one smock for use in an artificery. Please work whatever runes you think may be useful with a focus on ones relating to fire and electricity. Do you also make masks, by any chance? A cloth one for use in a sawdust-laden environment would be good. Okay if not possible too.

Sincerely,

Pete Phubodin (I think with how often we communicate, it's only right that you call me by my name instead of being so stuffy.)

HAVE YOU FUCKING RUN OFF WITH MY TELEPHOTO LENS AND SMOCK?!!!!!! The lens I can understand—it is QUITE expensive—but the smock???? Do you know how long I have been surviving on Thada’s sole RATTY smock?? I think my fingertips have melted away and I’ve burned more t-shirts that I own!! I know I said I was rich but what the fuck!!!???

If I get no response soon I’ll come down to Phuket myself and kick your ass!!

Khun Phubodin,

I am extremely sorry for the delay and, as such, I have given you a discount. I don’t think you’d like excuses, but I was caught up with some urgent private matters and had to leave my shop unattended with no one to send out anything. I have used the fastest shipping service there is to get your items back to you, and the postmaster assured me that you would get them within two or three days.

Once again, apologies.

I said he could call me by my name and what does he do? Deliberately use K’Phubodin to rile me up. ESPECIALLY after doing some impressive runework on my lens. I'd shake you if you were here. Truly. Don't underestimate me.

Khun Phanuwat,

My lens and smock arrived in perfect condition and I am also grateful for the gloves you included. You really didn’t need to. (But my fingertips are VERY grateful.)

I noticed that you didn’t mention the price of the gloves on the invoice and, as such, have decided to pay for them anyway. Use the extra money to buy yourself a nice coffee. I heard Phuket has many nice places like that.

And just call me Pete. I’m probably younger than you anyway.

Sincerely,

Pete

Khun Phanuwat,

WHY!!! Did you send me a box of look choop after the absolutely horrible dick I was during that last to last letter?? My friend, who heard of the situation, immediately came to steal the sweets away from me and tell me I don’t deserve them. I think I was completely in the right to be angry, but I do agree that I probably could've reacted to that better. I promise I don't usually threaten to kick anyone's ass. You're very nice.

(But I did still steal a few and they were delicious, so who's the real winner.)

Sending you a little treat back because you’ve been kind regardless of my foul mouth. (AND DON’T YOU DARE TRY TO PAY IT BACK.)

Sincerely,

Pete

Khun Pete,

I have to thank you for the biscuits you sent me which arrived safely two days ago. I hope they weren’t expensive because I noticed that the tin had English on it.

I’ve decided to comply to your request (demand) that I not send anything back, and so, I just wrote to confirm that I received your gift and the extra money from your last order has been kept as credit for your next piece of work.

Faithfully,

Kao Phanuwat

Let’s be real, there are more chances that you’re older than me, than I you. I’m born in December, after all.

You said you’re an artificer right? I was wondering if you take orders as well thank you in advance.

Kao (I think we can dispense of all formalities at this point we have known each other for almost half a year already),

Sending in two pairs of gloves to be runed—my friends have heard all your tales and are eager for your skilled work as well—and two photographs of the temple where I made merit yesterday. (That’s gold leaf on the Bodhisattva’s toes. It looked gorgeous and I realised I hadn’t sent you anything recently. Your shop must be cold and boring, right? All the runemasters shops I've seen are all...drab. My photographs will add bright pops of colour. I used the expensive coloured film for you. Costs a lot. Honestly, at this point perhaps I should just open a photography studio...? I shall think more about that idea.)

Do you know the usual wear I can get out of your runes? The last lens you put a shatter proofing rune on just broke into a million pieces like my dreams and my wallet. (My father will one day get ulcers and it'll be my fault, I know it.)

To answer your question from the last letter yes, I am an artificer and no, I don’t tend to take orders, but I can see if I can help you. What’d you like to know?

Pete,

Thank you, firstly, for your photographs and secondly, for advertising my business to your friends. I do hope you’re not telling them any tall tales that I won’t be able to live up to, though—I’m just a regular runemaster, not something special.

Shatterproof runes tend to only last one time, I’m afraid. They hold only enough energy for one attempt and I’m sorry for your lens. Perhaps I should’ve warned you of that before you went chucking it off cliffs or at your friends. (I’m kidding, I know you wouldn’t hurt your precious lens.) (And I do hope your father survives. I saw him in the newspaper recently and he seems like a kind man.)

Remember I mentioned that I use a carving tool made by a local artificer? Well, that local artificer—excuse my language—fucked off after scamming some people of their money. His tool, though, does work but it’s begun making some truly strange noises recently and it’s become harder for me to do my work on the non-cloth items. I was wondering if I could just send it in for you to have a look! (It’s okay if you can’t. I can just go to the next artificer in the town over, I’m just being lazy.)

I haven’t sent an invoice for the gloves because if you can do my pen, I shall deduct it from that.

Faithfully,

Kao

Kao,

  1. My friend saw your work and immediately knew of you?? Are you so famous now? It’s because of my regular patronage isn’t it? I joke, but only in part. She told me she has been to Phuket and even attended a carving workshop with you. Maybe you remember her, her name is Sandee.
  2. I can and will chuck a lens at a friend, trust me. You don’t know of my days in school. I was a regular hoodlum and constantly getting into wild fights. My shirt was off more often than on, really. (My father doesn’t deserve the high blood pressure, but I think I make his life more entertaining as he deserves.)
  3. SEND IT. I’ve been dying of curiosity about a tool like that since I’ve never seen or heard of one around here! Do you know who the artificer was? Maybe I can get on his ass and threaten him a little like the old school days. I think I still have some sort of a reputation here.

I know Sandee! I think? She was quite kind during the workshop and one of the better carvers. Is she still in the field or doing something else? Her grasp on runery was kind of weak, no offence.

(I have nothing to say about your father because you are apparently evil. If I shall see him one day, I'll apologise on your behalf.)

I sent the tool out today. In your own words, “I am losing money the longer I wait”, so if you could please hurry, I would be most grateful. I’ve written the address you can send it to on the back of this letter—it’s my home address.

Kao,

You should buy me a beer—I’ve worked only on your carving pen since I received your letter. Your artificer was quite talented and made a mess out of everything. I fixed it up from what I could understand (Sandee helped a lot because she is the better artificer between us) and we even polished up the outside casing. (I also hope the scummy artificer doesn’t mind, but I used his tool to work on something Thada’s wanted for ages: a tattoo pen. We’re still working out the specifics on how to imbue enough energy for long-lasting runes that aren’t one use, but hopefully we’ll come up with something soon. And if we don’t, can I ask you? When we patent it, we’ll make sure to pay you and credit you as well.)

Attached is my invoice (HA I always wanted to write that). Your pen should be back to you in a few days.

Pete

B.T.W. what have you thought of for loy krathong? Come up to Bangkok if you’re free—I can host you for a day or so and take you about town. We’re friends right?

Pete,

I’ve just sent out your latest camera—I’ve been reading up on a few magazines and I can recognise that’s the latest Zeiss—and done up your socks as you asked. Sorry for not replying quicker. For some reason there’s been a wealth of things to do recently. (Is this the business you sent my way...?)

We’ve had a lot more farangs coming in now that the weather is pleasant and a lot of them have been dropping by my shop. It’s so strange, maybe they don’t have runemasters where they’re from? Or perhaps they think just want to buy my ‘fanciful little trinkets’ and take them back home to show off to their friends and family. I usually keep a little stock of the usual—luck, love, and money charms—and I’ve had to go scouring the beaches in search of pretty shells and rocks to make more. They sell much better than the cloth ones I make.

You’ve written beer on the invoice, so I’ve decided that that nullifies the last order you placed with me. I’ll buy you a round if we ever meet.

No plans for loy krathong. Maybe see if my mother will be free enough to come with me. What about you?

Kao,

Do people believe in those luck charms? Or the loves ones? I distinctly remember when I was younger, an ex-partner and I bought a bracelet from a runemaster which promised more passion in our relationship. Well, we fucked a lot, but she cheated on me less than two months into it, so I don't know what to make of that. It really put me off those charms. But if you were the one selling it, maybe I’d trust it more. Maybe I need one for a relationship now, ha! I'm the only single one left in my friends, if you'd believe it.

Come up to Bangkok when you’re free, I’m serious. We have an amazing celebration here and I want to show you the merchandise they’ve made in celebration of our basketball and football team going to the Olympics. Bring your mother too. You’re so lucky to have a man like me willing to be your tour guide.

Pete,

Those charms are single-use and very weak. There are only a few love charms that still exist to this day that work, and most of them were made by the virtuosos of old, the ones who could really alter the current of prana. They say the Eiffel Tower’s very foundations were imbued with energy so intense it echoes until today, fading out. It sounds like romantic blather, but one day I should like to see it with my own eyes. There's nothing wrong with believing in a little fantastical thing like that sometimes!

I'm no virtuoso, but I think the best charms I make are of a protective nature. (They’re the most highly requested ones at my shop, so I assume that my work has some value.) The strongest I have made is for my sister who lives abroad. They take too much time and energy and concentration.

I didn’t mean to write this much about runes, but it is, unfortunately, a passion and a job of mine. If you would ever be more interested, I would be glad to send you the books I got from college when I was studying. (Runemaster Waen was a great mentor despite his strictness.)

Oh, I ‘m so lucky indeed that the rich, young master Pete Phubodin—with the behaviour of a wild dog—offers to take me around. I’m kidding. Your offer is very touching and I’ll be sure to ask my mother if she would like to go to Bangkok. She dislikes travelling across large distances, you see.

The beer has clearly gotten to me; I don’t know why I wrote so much. I’ll leave this out for the post right now because I daren’t reread it.

Good night,

Kao

Kao,

Thank you for the fruit basket. I have to ask: how did you have it delivered to my residence? Did you contact someone? My father was rather surprised to be welcomed with such a gift—we haven’t gotten one in ages because the fusty old friends he has much prefer exotic fruit baskets with things we never eat (fucking pineapples!!! what are they!! so bland so horrible so spiky!)—and he immediately devoured ALL of the sweet tangerines. I didn’t even get one! I think he's quite ready to have me replaced.

Did you hear about the Olympics? What an absolute disgrace. I hold a great love for water—swimming remains one of my first loves—so I scoured every newspaper daily for updates only to be met with disappointment again and again. Fuck all our athletes, I think I could have done better.

I recall you mentioning a few months ago that your birthday falls in this month and, as I don’t know the date, I’ve decided to send you a little present. Consider it an early or belated birthday wish, but I hope you like it.

This should reach you by the end of the year, so HAD HAPPY NEW YEAR. I used my best English handwriting for that, I hope you appreciate it.

You’re really too much. I know you’re rich, but if you send me expensive things like a camera, I don’t know how to repay you. It arrived on my birthday, if you’d believe it, and my mother and I were rather shocked. Enclosed is a picture of the temple I went to to make merit. (Unfortunately, I was spotted by a man and I daren't risk more film so I didn't take another picture. Getting it developed in colour wasn't that bad either!)

You keep inviting me to Bangkok, but I think you should come down to Phuket next year. Perhaps during Songkran. We have an extra bedroom here and while our house may be smaller than what you are used to, I think you would enjoy it. Think about it.

Thank you so much once again.

Kao

(!!!Keep a handle on your money though. Your father shall most certainly get ulcers if you send pricey equipment to runemasters in other towns!!!)

The book was amazing! It was a bit of a struggle to read it—I’m only slightly better than you are, you know—but the librarian was particularly helpful and got me a dictionary. I spent more time in the dictionary than I did reading it, I assure you. Just hopping from one word definition to another. There were many interesting topics discussed and I hadn’t realised how differently each of our cultures views runes. Fascinating, truly. I think we are more in tune with it, though, whatever they might think of themselves.

And I did see the news. Definitely going to vote, but have told my mother to stay safe. There’s no trusting what anyone is planning these days with the mild unrest. The military can suck a dick.

Stay safe too,

FRAUD is all I have to say on the matter. Seri Manangkhasila winning again I should probably be careful and not write more lest the postmaster read this (fuck you if you do old man), but I hope the number of underscores under the first word explain exactly how I feel about this situation.

In positive and exciting news, guess what? I'll leave a few lines for you to make your guesses.

Well! I’ve convinced my father that I need to go to Phuket for Songkran! Honestly, there was no convincing. He has a meeting to attend in another part of the country and I’ll be alone anyway, languishing with my housekeeper, so it’s only right that I come visit you.

I hope you were serious about offering me room and board, and if not, well it sucks for you. I’ll come down anyway and make it a point to come see you. I know where you live, ha ha ha. If that sounded sinister, it was meant to be.

You are truly ridiculous. How can you confess to me and then leave without waiting for my answer?!!! Do you think you’re in some romantic film?! This may sound like I’m scolding you, and I AM. I was really flustered! I stood there like a fool for a good 20 minutes after your train had left with my head in my hands!!!

Your stay with us was really delightful. My mother loves you so—I think she’s just sick of me and is looking for a replacement and you fit all her criteria of young, handsome, and rich. I suppose it’ll make you happy to hear that.

Tomorrow I’ll be down at the shop. We just got a telephone installed officially, so I’ll write the number on the back of the letter. Let’s talk about this over call instead, hm? Kao,

Business first: I have sent you an upgrade on the tattoo pen I am working on with Thada to see if you can look at the runes we had engraved once. (Didn’t ask for your help, sorry, but you were terribly busy and I didn’t want to stress you out more.) They don’t hold as much energy as we expected, so lifelong protective runes won’t work. (We tested on fruits, not ourselves, don’t worry.)

And in non-business news: you appeared in my dreams tonight and did a lot of things that I shouldn’t write about. Waking up to an empty bed is terribly sad. I think I’ll have some good news for you soon, but I’m waiting to see if it arrives first.

Send me more photos, please. I need something to tide me over until our next visit.

Love,

Pete

Forgive me, but next time I see you, you’re getting kissed first. Bring a hat to cover your face. Preferably a big one. Or be ready to let the whole train station see it, who gives a fuck.

Pete,

Business response: the rune won’t have life-long wear unless the runemaster is strong too. (The energy in a rune decays over time at a slow and steady rate.) I have sent you a few mixtures of essences that I use to soak the threads I use and for my carving pen. Try mixing it with the tattoo ink—it should have no adverse reactions, but I am not a medic. Is Thada trained in runes? Have someone more knowledgeable about them attempt a tattoo. Knowledge is power as well.

Also, I am terribly embarrassed about these photographs I have enclosed. Please let them reach you without any interference of the postmaster or I shall never be able to meet his eye ever again. (Just so you know, it really felt like I have tainted the camera you gave me forever. Did you pick a Polaroid deliberately? Was this all a set up?) These better tide you over until we meet again.

Sent your friend’s runed gloves out tonight as well—it’s his birthday, right? Couldn’t find the right thread I wanted, so I had to make do with what I had soaked. Hope he likes them.

Love,

Kao

Sandee has told me all about your artificing attempts. I’m not letting you put that in me.

Kao,

I thought you would like an update about the tattoo pen we were working on.

We hired a local runechild—I refuse to use the word master with him, he’s a little asshole is what he is—to help us out to see whether it would make a difference. Sandee and the child tried, and his did noticeably last a while more than hers. Thada is now thinking of joining a College to learn runes. (Sandee suggested we just take on a runemaster as an apprentice if they are so willing and work that way since it’s easier, but the only one we know is Non and after his smug little face today I am completely unwilling.)

Either way, you are, as ever, the saviour of our project. Sent you back the tattoo pen to see if you could do anything about the needle. We don’t get shipments of them too often and we have wasted more that we should’ve on this side-project. (The runes seems to wear it down quicker?) I remember you saying you were experimenting with a sterilisation rune from a runemaker you know. We offer our humble pen as a test subject.

(And, as always, missing you deeply. Send me more photos like that. You look beautiful in lace.)

Love,

Pete

Kao,

This is exactly why I said you should let me have a phone installed at your house. I have exciting news and you are out gallivanting on house-calls to carve things.

My father has opened up a smaller branch of his business in Phuket and asked whether I would like to join as a lead artificer. Of course, I didn’t refuse. You were serious about wanting to try this with me, right?

I’ll be down in a fortnight in search of a house. If you could be my tour guide, I would be grateful and if you could not, then make time for me and do it anyway or I’ll tell your mother you neglect me.

I can’t wait to see you again.

Love,

Pete

Dear Pete,

A reminder to check out the houses that I informed you of. I’ll be out for two days and three nights on a refresher course at my College. (We have renowned Runemaster Pinnada coming with lessons she learned in Sweden!!)

Don't do too many fun things without me, okay? I shall miss you and your voice most terribly while I'm not here. (If possible, will try to find a telephone and call you in Friday evening after 5 P.M. so keep an eye out.)

Love,

Your Kao

I was serious when I agreed that we should live together. My mother and sister shall be staying at a teacher’s quarter anyway and do not deserve to be subjected to our…proclivities. B.T.W. did you manage to check out the shop that has been handed to me? Will my old sign fit over it?

My dearest, darlingest, loveliest Kao,

I know you’re about to be furious BUT I had your whole shop repainted. Everything is set up exactly as you like it! All you have to do now is show up with your materials.

I went to our house today and it’s perfect. Enclosed are some photos so you know what to expect. Dad was delighted to hear that he would finally get to meet us and says that you shouldn’t feel pressured of the fact that he got me the house—it was going to be given anyway.

Come here quickly, I miss you so.

Love,

Pete

Kao,

Stole the keys so that we can walk into our first house together. By the time you read this, I’ll almost be back home—had to go out for some celebratory things we’d need tonight.

Love,

Your Pete
