Work Text:

It was a calm and quiet autumn morning as Chen Yuzhi was walking down the cobblestone road, a soft smile on his face as he headed towards his clinic.  Once he reached his clinic, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his keys, unlocking the padlock on the chains that held his clinic doors closed.  After unlocking the padlock, he unlocked the doors to his clinic but as he was pushing the doors open, someone all but barreled into him, shoving him inside his clinic.  He let out a cry of surprise as he stumbled inside before looking up to see who all but shoved him into his own clinic.

“Excuse me, but you can’t just—” he started when the person slapped a hand over his mouth and dragged him over to the wall, slamming him against it before almost covering his body with his own, even though Chen Yuzhi was slightly taller than him.  They stayed like that for a moment, Chen Yuzhi’s heart hammering in his ears as the stranger pressed against him, his hand covering his mouth.  As they stayed like that, shouts were heard outside and Chen Yuzhi watched over the man’s shoulder as police officers ran past the clinic, obviously looking for someone.  However, they didn’t even look towards the clinic and continued on and once the man was sure they were far enough away, he removed his hand from Chen Yuzhi’s mouth and pushed away from the young doctor.  Chen Yuzhi then let out a huff before he glared at the man.

“Who the hell are you?” he demanded.  The man smiled and crossed his arms.

“Wouldn’t you like to know, pretty boy” he teased.  Chen Yuzhi crossed his arms this time.

“You were the one who barged into my clinic, so I think I deserve at least a name” he snapped.  The man laughed before his face turned serious as he reached into his jacket and pulled out a gun that he had kept in a shoulder holster, pointing it at Chen Yuzhi, whose eyes widened in shock.

“And what makes you think I should tell you who I am?  You gonna rat me out to the cops?” he snarled.  Chen Yuzhi quickly shook his head, raising his hands in surrender.

“No, no, I wouldn’t do that.  I promise you, I wouldn’t do that” he assured.  The man narrowed his eyes before he pulled the hammer back on his gun, causing Chen Yuzhi to squeeze his eyes shut in fear.

“Don’t, please.  Please, I have a little sister.  I’m the only family she has” he begged.  The man paused and clicked the hammer back into place before lowering the gun.

“You have a sister?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi cracked open an eye in surprise and slowly lowered his hands as he nodded.

“Mmhm.  She’s eight” he explained.  The man hummed as he placed the gun back into his holster.

“What’s her name?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi blinked before he cleared his throat.

“Keying.  Chen Keying” he answered.  The man hummed again.

“And you?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi looked at him in confusion.

“Hmm?” he replied.  The man motioned to him.

“What’s your name?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi blinked before he smiled slightly.

“Dr. Chen Yuzhi” he replied.  The man looked at him before he smirked slightly.

“Jiang Yuelou” he greeted.  Chen Yuzhi dipped his head.

“Nice to meet you” he replied before he frowned.

“Why were you running from the police?  And so early in the morning?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou smirked.

“Can’t tell you that, doc” he replied.  Chen Yuzhi huffed.

“You’re awfully cryptic, aren’t you?” he murmured before he tilted his head at him.

“Are you hurt?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou frowned.

“Why would you ask that?” he replied.  Chen Yuzhi motioned to his clinic.

“I am a doctor and you did barge into my clinic so I thought you were hurt.  Are you?” he asked, taking a step forward to stand before Jiang Yuelou, letting his eyes roam over the man in genuine concern.  Jiang Yuelou’s eyes widened before he shook his head.

“I’m fine.  But are you hurt?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi looked up at him with wide eyes and blinked.

“Me?” he repeated.  Jiang Yuelou laughed.

“Well yeah.  I did sort of barrel into you and then all but slam you into your medicine drawers” he explained.  Chen Yuzhi blushed slightly at the memory before he cleared his throat and shook his head.

“I’m fine.  You just startled me, that’s all” he replied.  Jiang Yuelou hummed, just as shouts were heard outside, making both him and Chen Yuzhi look over towards the door before Chen Yuzhi slowly walked over and stepped out, looking down the street to see the police officers that were chasing Jiang Yuelou earlier were coming his way.  His eyes widened and he quickly popped his head back inside as he turned to look at Jiang Yuelou.

“The police are coming.  Hide!” he exclaimed.  Jiang Yuelou’s eyes widened.

“What?!” he exclaimed.  Chen Yuzhi tsked before he ran over to him and grabbed him by the wrist, dragging him upstairs to the second floor of his clinic before shoving him over towards one of the bed.

“Lie down” he ordered.  Jiang Yuelou frowned.

“What?” he asked, confused.  Chen Yuzhi huffed.

“Just lie down!” he exclaimed.  Jiang Yuelou nodded and quickly laid down on one of the beds as Chen Yuzhi took the partitioning curtain and drew it around the bed before poking his head inside.

“I’ll try to stall, so please don’t make any noise” he begged before he turned and slipped away, leaving Jiang Yuelou practically at his mercy.

‘I hope this doctor knows what he’s doing’ he thought to himself as he made himself comfortable on the small clinic bed.

Downstairs, Chen Yuzhi quickly made himself busy by walking over to his shelf full of patient files and grabbed a few before heading back to his desk, sitting down and opening one of them, just as the police officers stepped inside his clinic.

“Excuse me” one of the officers called out, making Chen Yuzhi look up from his file.

“Can I help you gentlemen?” he asked.  One of the officers walked over to him and held up what looked like a wanted poster.

“Have you seen this man?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi looked at the poster, his eyes widening slightly once he realized that the wanted poster had a picture of Jiang Yuelou on it.  However, he didn’t want the police to know that he knew who the man was or that he had indeed seen him, so he just played dumb and shook his head.

“No, I’m sorry.  Who is he?” he asked, looking up at the officers.  One of the officers huffed.

“Jiang Yuelou, leader of 天狗吃日.  One of the most dangerous men in Jing City.  We raided his hideout this morning but he escaped.  We’re just doing a search of each shop on this street.  Might we search your clinic?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi looked at him before he huffed.

“Do you have a search warrant?” he replied.  The police officers both paused and looked at him in surprise.

“Are you hiding something, doctor?” the other officer asked.  Chen Yuzhi huffed.

“I’m the owner of a clinic, with files full of patient’s personal information.  There is something called doctor-patient confidentiality.  You want to search my clinic?  Come back with a warrant” he ordered.  The two officers looked at each other before they looked back at Chen Yuzhi.

“And what if we decide to just search your clinic without a warrant?” the first officer asked.  Chen Yuzhi narrowed his eyes at him before he reached over and picked up his phone, looking at the officers.

“Would you like me to get Commissioner Bai on the line?  Because I can and I will” he threatened.  The officers scoffed.

“You don’t know Commissioner Bai’s direct line” one sneered.  Chen Yuzhi raised an eyebrow before he quickly dialed a number before placing the phone to his ear.  He waited for a moment before he smiled.

“Commissioner Bai.  It’s Chen Yuzhi” he greeted.  The two officers looked at him in shock as he let out a soft laugh.

“I’m fine, thank you.  Actually, I called to tell you that I have two of your officers in my clinic right now and they asked to search my clinic but I told them to come back with a warrant” he explained.  He then listened for a moment before he hummed.

“Actually, they threatened me and asked what I would do if they just searched my clinic without a search warrant.  So I called you” he continued before he looked at the officers.

“Would you like to speak to them?” he asked.  He listened for a moment before he smiled and pulled the phone away from his ear, holding it out to the officers.

“For you” he stated.  The two officers looked at each other nervously before one of them reached out and took the phone, putting it to their ear.

“Hello?” he answered.  As soon as the receiver hit his ear, a loud booming voice could be heard, causing the officer to flinch away from the phone and Chen Yuzhi to snicker quietly.

“Yes sir.  Yes sir.  Yes sir, we’ll come back with a warrant.  Yes sir.  Yes sir.  We apologize sir” the officer apologized, just as the line went dead.  The officer then handed the phone back to Chen Yuzhi, who just raised an eyebrow at him.

“I told you to come back with a search warrant” he stated.  The officers huffed before they bowed to him.

“We’ll be back” one of the officers murmured before they stood up and turned, heading out of the clinic.  Chen Yuzhi waited until they were in another shop before he turned and bolted up the stairs to the second floor, rushing over to the bed that was covered by the curtain.  He then drew back the curtain to see Jiang Yuelou smirking at him.

“You really know the police commissioner?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi smiled and blushed slightly.

“Ah…when I first came to Jing City, his wife was really sick, so he asked me if I could take a look.  All she had was a mild flu, but that’s not really curable with natural Chinese medicine, so I gave her some antibiotics and it seemed to cure her right up.  To thank me, he gave me his direct line, in case I ever needed anything” he explained.  Jiang Yuelou looked at him before he laughed in amazement.

“Extraordinary.  That could really come in handy one day” he mused.  Chen Yuzhi smiled before his eyes widened.

“Oh!  The police officers are going to come back with a search warrant, so you need to leave before they come back” he stated.  Jiang Yuelou looked at him in shock.

“You’re not going to turn me in?  After knowing who I am?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi smiled again.

“I told you the first time I wasn’t going to and I mean it” he replied.  Jiang Yuelou continued to stare at him in surprise before he stood up from the bed and walked over to Chen Yuzhi, the young doctor looking at him with big bambi eyes.

“They’re not going to hurt you, are they?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi blinked before he laughed.

“No, no, they shouldn’t.  I’ll be alright.  But you need to go” he declared.  Jiang Yuelou raised an eyebrow before he smirked.

“What, kicking me out already?” he teased.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened before he tsked and gently smacked Jiang Yuelou’s arm.

“No, it’s just that I don’t want to see you getting taken into custody” he stated as he gently shoved Jiang Yuelou towards the stairs.  Jiang Yuelou huffed.

“Why?  I’m a triad leader, remember?  And didn’t you hear those cops?  I’m the most dangerous man in Jing City” he stated.  Chen Yuzhi tsked.

“If you were the most dangerous man in the city, you would have put that bullet in my brain when I begged you not to” he reminded as he and Jiang Yuelou headed downstairs.  Jiang Yuelou hummed.

“Yes, I suppose so” he agreed as he and Chen Yuzhi walked over to the clinic doors, Jiang Yuelou pausing before turning to look back at Chen Yuzhi.

“You sure you’re going to be alright?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi blinked before he smiled and let out a soft laugh.

“I’ll be fine.  Just don’t get caught, alright?  I’ll have used my call to Commissioner Bai for nothing” he teased.  Jiang Yuelou smirked before he huffed.

“Alright, I’ll be careful.  See you around, doc” he bid before he slipped out of the clinic and headed off down the road.  Chen Yuzhi then stepped out of the clinic and watched the triad leader walk down the street, continuing to watch him until he was out of sight before he turned and headed back inside, shaking his head and laughing softly to himself.  What an interesting morning.

The officers did come back with a warrant and only then did Chen Yuzhi allow them to search his clinic.  When they searched, of course, they didn’t find anything but Chen Yuzhi knew they wouldn’t.

“Thank you, Dr. Chen.  If you see Jiang Yuelou, however, please don’t hesitate to call the police station” one of the officers instructed.  Chen Yuzhi nodded and waited for the officers to leave before he sighed heavily.

“Like I’m going to give up Jiang Yuelou” he murmured.

‘But isn’t he a dangerous man?  Wouldn’t it be better for him to be off the streets?’ a voice in the back of his mind asked.

“Hush.  If he really was as dangerous as they claim him to be, he would have killed me the first chance he got” he hissed before he went back to work.

A few weeks later, as Keying was skipping happily to Chen Yuzhi’s clinic from school, she noticed a man hiding behind a phone booth, clutching at his arm.  She frowned before she walked over to him and looked up at him with her big brown eyes.

“Mister?” she called out, making the man look down at her and frown.

“What is it, kid?” he grunted as he continued to clutch at his arm, which Keying noticed had blood dripping down it.

“Are you hurt?” she asked, concern in her eyes and voice.  The man huffed.

“I’m fine, kid” he assured.  Keying looked at him before she huffed and reached up, grabbing the hand that was covering the wound on his arm.  The man’s eyes widened and he wanted to snap at her to let him go, but she was already dragging him out from behind the phone booth and down the street.

“Kid, hey, wait—” he started but Keying just ignored him and continued to drag him down the street until she entered one of the street-front shops.

“Gege!  Gege, help!” she exclaimed, causing a young man dressed in a three-piece cream suit to come down from the second floor and look at her with wide eyes.

“Keying?  What’s wrong—” he started when his eyes widened as he looked at the man she was dragging behind her.

“Jiang Yuelou?” he breathed.  Jiang Yuelou looked at him in shock before he smirked.

“Hey doc” he replied.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head.

“What are you—” he started when he noticed Jiang Yuelou’s bloody hand and the blood soaked section of his brown leather jacket.

“Oh my god!” he exclaimed, rushing over to Jiang Yuelou and Keying.

“Sit down, sit down before you pass out” he exclaimed, gently taking Jiang Yuelou by the arm and guiding him over to the chair in front of his desk.  He then looked at Keying, who was looking down at her bloody hand with wide eyes.

“Keying, honey” he called out, shaking Keying out of her shocked state.

“Yes gege?” she replied, looking at him.  Chen Yuzhi smiled gently.

“Can you get me a basin of water and a towel?” he asked.  Keying nodded and rushed over to the sink, washing her hands first before she grabbed a basin and filled it with water.  She then carefully carried the basin back over to Chen Yuzhi, setting it down next to him before rushing over to one of the cabinets and grabbing a small towel.  She grabbed the towel then ran back to Chen Yuzhi, handing the towel to him before she rushed upstairs to grab other medical supplies.  While she was getting the medical supplies, Chen Yuzhi began tugging at Jiang Yuelou’s brown leather jacket, trying to get it off of him.

“Woah, woah, aren’t we skipping a few bases here, Yuzhi?” Jiang Yuelou teased.  Chen Yuzhi glared at him.

“If you want me to amputate your arm, Jiang Yuelou, keep making jokes” he hissed.  Jiang Yuelou’s eyes widened and he quickly but carefully removed his brown leather jacket before he began to unbutton his brown suit vest then white dress shirt, shrugging both of them off so that Chen Yuzhi could take a look at his wound.  When Chen Yuzhi looked at it, he hissed.

“God, Yuelou, what did you do?” he whispered as he reached over and picked up the small towel that Keying handed him before he looked at Jiang Yuelou.

“I’m going to start cleaning okay?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou nodded and watched as Chen Yuzhi soaked the towel in the water before ringing it out and bringing it over to the wound.  He then began to gently clean the drying blood from around the wound, causing Jiang Yuelou to hiss and grunt.  Chen Yuzhi immediately stopped cleaning and looked at him with wide eyes.

“I’m sorry, does it hurt?  Are you okay?” he breathed.  Jiang Yuelou looked at him and smiled slightly.

“I’m fine.  Keep going” he murmured.  Chen Yuzhi looked at him before he nodded and went back to cleaning around the wound, making sure to be extra careful, just as Keying came back downstairs, carrying his medical kit.  She then walked over to him and placed it on the desk, making him look up at her and smile.

“Thank you sweetheart” he thanked as he continued to clean Jiang Yuelou’s arm, making sure to wipe away all of the blood that had trailed down his arm as well as clean his bloody hand before he placed the wet towel down and picked up the clean, dry towel, gently patting down Jiang Yuelou’s arm, making sure that it was dry.  He then placed the towel down and opened his kit, searching through it before he pulled out a pair of forceps.  He then looked over at Jiang Yuelou and smiled apologetically.

“This is going to hurt” he stated.  Jiang Yuelou shrugged.

“I’ll be fine” he assured.  Chen Yuzhi huffed and shook his head before he reached out, gripping Jiang Yuelou’s shoulder as he took the forceps and pinched them around the bullet, which thankfully wasn’t lodged too deep in Jiang Yuelou’s arm.  Jiang Yuelou gritted his teeth in pain but said nothing as Chen Yuzhi placed the bloody bullet on the towel before turning to grab a non-adhesive wound dressing, placing it over the bullet wound.  He then wrapped gauze over the wound before finishing with velband and crepe.  Once the wound was covered, he looked at Jiang Yuelou and smiled.

“All done” he declared.  Jiang Yuelou looked down at his bandaged arm and smirked.

“Not bad.  Thanks Yuzhi” he thanked as he looked up at the young doctor.  Chen Yuzhi smiled, just as three men appeared at the clinic doors, guns in their hands.  Keying was the first one to notice them, her eyes widening as she let out a horrified scream, causing Chen Yuzhi and Jiang Yuelou to look over at her with wide eyes before they both turned and noticed the men with guns.

“Yuzhi, get down!” Jiang Yuelou shouted as he shot to his feet and pulled his gun out of his shoulder holster and began firing at the three men.  Chen Yuzhi and Keying quickly ducked down, Chen Yuzhi immediately crawling over to his little sister and bundling her into his arms, Keying burying her face in his neck.  Meanwhile, the three men fired back at Jiang Yuelou, but none of their shots seemed to hit their target while his shots hit them either between the eyes or in the chest.  He then huffed before he stood to his feet and walked over to the dead men in front of the clinic, just as two men came running towards him.

“Boss!” one of the men exclaimed.  Jiang Yuelou said nothing before he motioned to the dead men on the ground.

“Get them out of here” he ordered.  The two men nodded and quickly grabbed the bodies, removing them from the premises as Jiang Yuelou turned, looking over at Chen Yuzhi and Keying, who were curled around each other.

“It’s over now” he called out.  Chen Yuzhi and Keying both looked up at him with almost identical big eyes before Chen Yuzhi looked over at Keying and cupped her face in his hands.

“Keying.  Sweetheart.  Are you hurt?” he asked, looking her over.  Keying shook her head as she let out a soft sob, tears streaming down her face as the gunshots had scared her.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened and he quickly bundled her into his arms again, gently stroking her hair.

“Shh, shh baby.  It’s okay, those bad men are gone.  Jiang Yuelou took care of them” he whispered before he looked over at Jiang Yuelou, who was standing before him with his dress shirt still unbuttoned, revealing well-toned abs.  Chen Yuzhi stared for a moment before he shook himself out of it and looked Jiang Yuelou in the eyes.

“Are they gone?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou nodded, causing him to let out a sigh of relief.

“Oh, thank God” he whispered, petting Keying’s hair again before he removed his arms from around her and stood up, walking over to Jiang Yuelou, reaching out to touch the wounded arm.

“I don’t think you moved or tore the bandages, so that’s good” he murmured.  Jiang Yuelou looked at him before he reached out and grasped Chen Yuzhi by the arm, causing Chen Yuzhi to look at him with wide eyes.

“Are you hurt?  Are either of you hurt?” he demanded.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head.

“No…no, we’re fine.  Thank you” he whispered.  Jiang Yuelou nodded as he released Chen Yuzhi’s arm and began rebuttoning his dress shirt then his suit vest before he slipped his leather jacket back on.  Once he put the leather jacket back on, Chen Yuzhi huffed.

“You might want to replace that jacket.  It does have a bullet hole and blood on it” he mused.  Jiang Yuelou looked at the ruined sleeve before he shrugged.

“Eh, I’ll stitch it up and it’ll be good as new” he replied as he looked over at Keying, who still looked a little traumatized.

“Is that your little sister?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi looked over at Keying as well before he smiled softly.

“Yeah” he replied.  Jiang Yuelou then motioned to her.

“May I?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi nodded and watched as Jiang Yuelou walked over and knelt before Keying, smiling softly.

“Hey there” he greeted, causing Keying to sniffle and look up at him.

“Hi” she whimpered.  Jiang Yuelou smiled a little wider.

“Thank you for dragging me to Yuzhi’s clinic” he thanked.  Keying sniffled and wiped her eyes before she nodded.

“You’re welcome” she replied.  Jiang Yuelou smiled before he held out his hand to her.

“I’m Jiang Yuelou” he introduced.  Keying blinked at him before she reached out and shook his hand.

“I’m…Keying” she replied.  Jiang Yuelou smiled.

“I’ve heard a lot about you.  Your brother talks very highly of you” he stated.  Keying’s eyes widened before she looked over at Chen Yuzhi, who just smiled.  She blushed slightly before she looked back at Jiang Yuelou.

“How come you were shot, gege?” she asked.  Jiang Yuelou sighed as he pushed himself to his feet, carefully pulling Keying to her feet as well.

“Damn rival triad thought it’d be funny to ambush my hideout, considering that the police just raided it a couple weeks ago” he grumbled.  Chen Yuzhi hummed.

“You got caught in the crossfire?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou chuffed.

“Just my luck, right?” he replied.  Chen Yuzhi smiled slightly.

“You’re lucky Keying found you or the police might have gotten to you” he mused.  Jiang Yuelou hummed.

“This is true” he replied before he looked down at Keying and smiled, giving her hand a squeeze.

“Thank you, sweetheart” he thanked.  Keying blushed and dipped her head in shy, childlike embarrassment, causing Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi to smile fondly, just as shouts were heard, causing Chen Yuzhi to look over with wide eyes before he ran to the entrance of his clinic and poked his head out of it, his eyes widening even further when he saw police officers running towards him and the clinic.

“Shit” he whispered before he turned and looked at Jiang Yuelou and Keying.

“The police are coming.  Keying, take Jiang Yuelou upstairs and hide him.  Do it, now” he barked.  Keying nodded before she looked at Jiang Yuelou.

“Come on, gege” she murmured, dragging him upstairs.  As soon as she dragged him upstairs, a swarm of police officers burst into the clinic, their guns drawn.

“We know Jiang Yuelou is in this clinic.  We have witnesses that saw him go in here” one of the officers snapped before he looked over at the other officers.

“Search” he ordered.  The officers nodded and began searching Chen Yuzhi’s clinic, practically making a mess of it.

“Stop it!  Stop it!” Chen Yuzhi shouted, watching as his clinic was trashed before his very eyes.  One of the officers then noticed the bloody forceps and the towel before looking over at Chen Yuzhi.

“Where is he?” he demanded.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head.

“He’s not here.  He left” he replied.  Another officer tsked before they backhanded Chen Yuzhi, causing him to cry out in pain and clutch at his face as he looked at the officer, only to get a gun pointed in his face.

“Lying to a police officer…that’s grounds for arrest” the officer sneered.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened and his mouth fell open in protest when a tall man with light tan skin, brown eyes hidden behind no-frame glasses, and black hair dressed in a black police uniform stepped into the clinic.

“What’s going on here?” he boomed, making all the officers and Chen Yuzhi look over at him.

“Commissioner Bai!” the police officers exclaimed.  The man, Police Commissioner Bai Jinbo, surveyed the trashed clinic before he looked over at Chen Yuzhi, who was still clutching at his face.

“Are you alright, Dr. Chen?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi took a deep breath before he nodded.

“I’m fine, sir” he replied.  Bai Jinbo nodded slowly before he looked at the officers.

“Get out” he ordered.  The officers looked at him with wide eyes.

“But sir!” one of the officers exclaimed.

“GET OUT!” Bai Jinbo roared.  The officers flinched before they quickly rushed out of the clinic, leaving Chen Yuzhi and Bai Jinbo alone.  After they had left, Bai Jinbo turned and walked over to the clinic doors and shut them before he took a deep breath.

“You can come downstairs, Jiang Yuelou” he called out.  Chen Yuzhi frowned and opened his mouth to ask how he knew Jiang Yuelou, but before he could say anything, he heard thunderous footsteps rushing down the stairs and soon his face was being cupped, forcing him to look into Jiang Yuelou’s wide eyes.

“Yuzhi.  Yuzhi, are you okay?” he breathed.  Chen Yuzhi blinked and opened his mouth to say something when Jiang Yuelou noticed how red his cheek was, causing him to let out a growl.

“They hit you?!” he roared.  Chen Yuzhi blinked again.

“Jiang Yuelou—” he started when Jiang Yuelou released his face and clenched his hands into fists.

“I’ll kill them.  Once I figure out who hit you, I’ll kill them” he snarled.

“You’ll do no such thing” a voice called out, making Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi look over at Bai Jinbo, who was crossing his arms and looking at them.  Jiang Yuelou huffed.

“And why not?” he demanded.  Bai Jinbo smirked.

“Because I’ll take care of them” he replied.  Jiang Yuelou looked at him before he huffed and shook his head.

“Still haven’t changed, have you, old man?” he asked.  Bai Jinbo tsked and walked over to him, uncrossing his arms before flicking him in the head, causing him to flinch and let out a cry.

“And you’re still a punk” he declared.  Jiang Yuelou laughed as Chen Yuzhi looked between the two men, confusion very evident on his face.

“Um…I don’t mean to interrupt but…how do you two know each other?” he asked.  Bai Jinbo and Jiang Yuelou looked over at him before Bai Jinbo smiled.

“Ah…Jiang Yuelou is my adoptive son” he explained.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened as his mouth fell open in shock.

“Your…son.  Your son is the most dangerous man in Jing City?!” he exclaimed.  Bai Jinbo huffed.

“I would have preferred him to become a police officer but…” he replied before he shrugged.  Jiang Yuelou then looked over at Chen Yuzhi and smiled.

“It’s a lot to take in, isn’t it?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi nodded.

“A little” he replied.  Jiang Yuelou chuckled before he reached out and cupped Chen Yuzhi’s face in his hand, gently stroking the cheek that was slapped.

“I’m sorry…you only tried to help and got hurt instead” he murmured.  Chen Yuzhi looked at him before he shook his head.

“I’m okay.  I’m okay.  As long as you’re not hurt, that’s all that matters” he replied.  Jiang Yuelou tsked.

“We’re going to have to work on that self-sacrificing attitude of yours” he mused, stroking Chen Yuzhi’s cheek again before he removed his hand and looked over at Commissioner Bai.

“You came at a good time otherwise I would have come down and started shooting” he stated.  Bai Jinbo hummed before he looked over at Chen Yuzhi.

“I apologize for all of this.  I’ll make sure to punish my men severely for the damage that they caused” he stated.  Chen Yuzhi nodded.

“Thank you, sir” he murmured.  Bai Jinbo nodded before he looked at Jiang Yuelou.

“You take good care of yourself” he ordered before he motioned to Chen Yuzhi.

“And you take good care of him” he continued.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened in shock as Jiang Yuelou laughed.

“Yes sir” he replied.  Bai Jinbo nodded before he turned and walked over to the clinic doors, pulling them open before stepping out of them.  Once he was gone, Jiang Yuelou looked over at Chen Yuzhi, who was looking back at him.  Jiang Yuelou then smiled before he walked over to Chen Yuzhi and stood before him.

“How you doing?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi looked at him before he sighed.

“Honestly?  I’m a little confused and a little shocked” he admitted.  Jiang Yuelou nodded.

         “I understand” he murmured.

“Gege?” a voice suddenly called out, causing Chen Yuzhi’s eyes to widen before he turned and looked up the stairs.

“Keying” he breathed, quickly taking off up the stairs, Jiang Yuelou on his heels; both men reaching the second floor to find Keying looking at them with wide, tear filled eyes from where she was sitting on one of the clinic beds.

“Gege…are you okay?” she whimpered.  Chen Yuzhi smiled softly and walked over to her and sat down beside her, wrapping his arms around her and hugging her.

“I’m okay, baby.  I’m okay” he murmured.  Keying looked up at him.

“Are you sure?” she asked.  Chen Yuzhi smiled and nodded.

“I’m fine” he assured, gently petting her hair.  Keying huffed, not really believing him, but she didn’t say anything as she leaned against him, Chen Yuzhi gently stroking her hair as Jiang Yuelou looked at them.

“I should get going” he murmured.  Chen Yuzhi looked up at him, frowning.

“You’re not…going to stay?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou shook his head.

“You know I’ll only end up hurting you and Keying” he murmured.  Chen Yuzhi looked at him and shook his head.

“No, you won’t” he argued.  Jiang Yuelou smiled and reached out, cupping Chen Yuzhi’s face in his hand, gently stroking his cheek with his thumb.

“It’s for the best, Yuzhi” he murmured.  Chen Yuzhi looked up at him before he sighed.

“Just…be careful” he murmured.  Jiang Yuelou chuckled as he stroked Chen Yuzhi’s cheek again.

“I will” he assured, a sad smile on his face as his fingers gently caressed Chen Yuzhi’s face before he turned and walked away, Chen Yuzhi watching him walk away with sad look on his face.

~*~*~*~*~*~

A year later, Chen Yuzhi was calmly unlocking the padlock on the chains that held his clinic doors closed.  After unlocking the padlock, he unlocked the doors to his clinic but as he was pushing the doors open, someone all but barreled into him, shoving him inside his clinic.  He let out a cry of surprise as he stumbled inside before looking up to see who all but shoved him into his own clinic.  He huffed and looked up with an irritated expression on his face.

“Excuse me, but you can’t just—” he started when the person slapped a hand over his mouth and dragged him over to the wall, slamming him against it.  Chen Yuzhi let out a gasp of pain under the person’s hand before he looked the person in the eyes, eyes widening in shock.  Standing before him, like the first day they met, was Jiang Yuelou, a small smirk on his face.

“Hey Yuzhi” he purred as he removed his hand from Chen Yuzhi’s mouth and pushed off the man.  Chen Yuzhi said nothing and just stared at him in shock.

“Jiang Yuelou?” he whispered after a moment.  Jiang Yuelou smiled.

“That’s me” he replied.  Chen Yuzhi continued to stare at him before he stepped forward, eyes roaming over him.

“Are you hurt?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou smiled and reached out, taking Chen Yuzhi’s hand.

“No” he replied.  Chen Yuzhi looked down at his hand in Jiang Yuelou’s before he looked back up at Jiang Yuelou, who was smiling fondly at him.

“Did you miss me?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi blushed and averted his gaze.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t” he murmured.  Jiang Yuelou laughed before his face softened and he reached out, gently caressing Chen Yuzhi’s face.

“I didn’t hurt you too badly, did I?  I did sort of slam you into your medicine drawers again” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi leaned into Jiang Yuelou’s gentle touch before he looked at him and shook his head.

“I’m alright” he replied.  Jiang Yuelou grinned.

“Good…I don’t want to hurt my doctor” he declared as he removed his hand from Chen Yuzhi’s face.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened.

“Your doctor?” he repeated.  Jiang Yuelou smiled devilishly as he leaned in, getting close to Chen Yuzhi’s face.

“Are you not?” he purred.  Chen Yuzhi felt his cheeks heat up fiercely and he averted his gaze again as Jiang Yuelou laughed.

“You’re so cute, Yuzhi” he mused.  Chen Yuzhi huffed and gave Jiang Yuelou a gentle shove.

“Shut up.  No I’m not” he murmured.  Jiang Yuelou smiled fondly as he gently knocked his forehead against Chen Yuzhi’s.

“You’re the cutest” he declared.  Chen Yuzhi’s cheeks heated up even more and Jiang Yuelou couldn’t help but smile fondly at the blushing mess that was the young doctor.  He then decided that he would stop teasing the young man, so he pulled back and gave Chen Yuzhi’s hand a squeeze.

“Would you like to join me for coffee?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi blinked in surprise before he smiled.

“I would love to” he replied.  Jiang Yuelou then motioned to the clinic.

“What about your patients?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi laughed.

“I don’t have patients this early in the morning.  The only person crazy enough to barge into a clinic this early is you” he teased, gently poking Jiang Yuelou in the side.  Jiang Yuelou flinched slightly before he laughed.

“I knew I liked you for a reason” he replied.  Chen Yuzhi smiled before he gently knocked his shoulder with Jiang Yuelou’s.

“Shall we go get that coffee?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou smiled.

“Let’s” he replied.  Chen Yuzhi nodded and both men headed out of the clinic, Chen Yuzhi stopping to relock the doors before he and Jiang Yuelou continued down the road, hand in hand, soft smiles on their faces.
