Learning to Respire

Work Text:

Eukaryogenesis was new in those days—Qfwfq explained—and naturally we had different notions of what it was all about. I was forming a nucleus to protect my genetic material; there was a lot of oxygen around, and I’d heard mumblings of recombinatoric reproduction. I had no intention of incorporating anybody. I was happy on my own. But sometimes you accidentally phagocytose someone, and then you both have to live with it. Krbs was full of energy and brought change to my life. We’ve been together ever since.

I’ll admit it, though: sometimes, I still do substrate-level phosphorylation alone.
