She had no idea how she had managed to go through the meeting with President Obama without tearing up. Just before the meeting an aide told her that Bill had been rushed to the hospital and would need to have surgery immediately. She had a knot in her stomach the whole time. She rushed out as soon as the meeting was over and took the first flight out of DC to go see Bill.
She was now on her way to the hospital. Huma was trying to make small talk but Hillary wasn't listening, she was just thinking about Bill. Flash back to 2004 when he had his quadruple bypass surgery, she was so scared to lose him. She tried to remember the last time they were together, the feel of his bare chest on her cheek and the sound of his heart beating after they made love.
They arrived at the hospital and she stopped and took a deep breath before entering Bill's room. She saw Chelsea sitting on the chair next to the bed looking at her father and Bill was asleep. He looked so peaceful. Before she could enter the room, Bill's doctors came to talk to her and give her an update on his health. She felt relieved that he was alright and everything when well with the surgery.
“Hi honey!” Hillary whispered to Chelsea as she came inside. Hillary hugged her daughter before she asked her “How are you doing?”
“I'm … I'm fine! I was so scared of losing him, again!”
“I know darling me too! I'm glad he made it; I don't know what I would have done ...”
“You would have found another husband in a better shape than me!” She was interrupted by Bill's voice who was barely awake and made jokes.
Hillary let go of Chelsea and went to Bill “How is my first husband feeling?” she said as she leaned down and kissed his forehead.
“I'm tired! But I feel otherwise good. I'm sorry I've scared you again, both of you!” he smiled at his girls.
“I, we're just glad you made it!” Chelsea said while giving him a hug.
The three of them talked for a little while, until Chelsea yawned and said she was going to get some coffee. Once alone Hillary sat on the side of the bed and looked at Bill.
“I'm sorry, Hillary!”
“Oh Bill! Don't scare me like this again or it's my heart that will give out!” Hillary said with tears in her eyes.
“We don't want that, do we? I'm gonna try my best not to scare you again, I need you!”
Hillary put her hand on his heart and closed her eyes just to focus on it, it calmed her immediately as always, the sound of his beating heart is the most relaxing thing for her even though she's never voiced it. She felt a chuckle coming from him.
“Yes, it's still there, and it's beating for you, my love!” now it was her turn to laugh.
“You just had heart surgery and you have nothing better to say to me than this? You cheese man!”
“I thought I was being romantic with Valentine's Day coming and all!” he said with a pout on his face.
“Oh, it's romantic alright! But cheesy!” she teased.
“Oh, you love it and you know it!” she laughed again and leaned to kiss his lips. “I do! Can you keep a secret?” he nodded.
“The sound of your beating heart is more calming than anything else for me!” she leaned for another kiss that lasted longer than the first one.
“I love you Hillary Rodham, so very much! I promise to take better care of my heart for you!”
“I love you too!” Hillary smiled at him touching his cheek with her hand.
No matter how cheesy it was, Hillary was glad she would still be able to fall asleep to the sound of his beating heart in the future.
