Wonder Woman: Then and Now

Work Text:

WONDER WOMAN THEN & NOW

(On her origins)

[Then]

I was originally a clay figurine that my mother Hippolyta melded until I was brought into life by magic from Zeus. So in other words I am an artificial being in a land ran by women who can live for millenia. Imagine that huh?

[Now]

Heh turns out I was actually another one of Zeus’ illegitimate children. Rest assured I am well aware that I am far from being the only person who can make that claim. But in retrospection I probably should’ve figured that “clay figure” story was just a well-intentioned lie my mother told me when I was a child.

(On her romantic history with Batman & Superman)

[Then]

Oh I must confess I’m just not sure who to go with here. I mean Superman is one of the kindest and most heroic men I know and I am the only woman he knows who can be on equal terms with him in strength & valor. However Batman has a certain debonair & mysterious charm to him as he and I have had a lot of good chemistry together. Oh what is a girl to do here… granted don’t get me wrong, Steve Trevor will always be my first love when it comes to the world of men though but still.

[Now]

Superman or Batman, ugh neither! Now if it were Power Girl or Batwoman that is a different story. ;) Okay I admit Superman is still generally a decent guy (as long as alternate universes don’t get involved). Now as for Batman on the other hand he can go from being a rather flawed but otherwise decent man to barely any better than Lex Luthor. Seriously what is up with rich men with massive Alpha Male complexes? Though that all being said Steve Trevor is still the 1st guy I was with even if he is usually a distant memory.

(On Batman’s love life with certain members of his Rogue’s Gallery.)

[Then]

Bruce it has come to my attention that before we started dating you used to have flings with adversaries of yours such as Catwoman and Talia Al Ghul and the like. While one can find it odd that a Superhero seems to have a romantic thing for the Super villainess’ he faces alone. However you stopped seeing them when you started dating me… right?

[Now]

So let me get this straight Bruce, you can potentially rehabilitate the villainess’ you face by having sex with them right? Hmm… perhaps I should try that. Okay Bruce I get it that things are still complicated with Selina and Talia but do you know any other ladies I might have a shot with? Since apparently more & more ladies in Gotham seem to be going with each other pretty often. But as for my rogue’s gallery I dunno if I can make it work with Giganta but I might be able to score with one of the versions of Cheetah though.

(On her Pop Culture Impact with Batman & Superman)

[Then]

Ah yes there is a reason why Superman, Batman and I are known as “The Big 3” of DC as I am easily one of the most famous Superheroines in Comic Book history! While yes, I maybe quite the sex symbol but I am also quite the feminist icon as well. Sure I didn’t get any movies then but I had a hit TV show starring Lynda Carter that became an iconic TV series that is renowned to even this day.

[Now]

Big 3… *sigh* oh who am I kidding when it comes to Pop Culture impact I am practically a distant third compared to those two. I mean thanks to the CW, Green Arrow & Flash probably have more impact than me. (But at least they convinced Warner Brothers that Batman is not their only franchise that can sell at least on TV.) Anyways for years I was more known being a part of the Justice League than as a leading Heroine and people usually think of the old Lynda Carter series when it comes to my stories. Sure I did get a 2009 animated movie but it was a mild niche success at best. I didn’t really start to get into the spotlight until Gal Gadot started to play me in the 2010s as I was considered a highlight in Batman vs. Superman and Justice League. While the initial Gal Gadot Wonder Woman movie was quite a renowned hit, the 2nd Wonder Woman film was… considerably less well received to put it mildly. Granted, the 1st Gal Gadot flick was a tough act to follow but still.

(On her varying styles over the years and stances on feminism)

[Then]

Well like I’ve said before I am a well known Feminist Icon as I have symbolized feminism in both good… and I admit not-so good ways. Also yes I do remember on how I went through a lot of different styles over the course of the 60s and I mean a lot. Basically DC was trying to come up with different ideas on how to reinterpret me to see which idea would stick. But by the 70s I was starting to stick around with my “Amazon Warrior Princess” that I am still doing today, though having a hit TV show did help.

[Now]

Okay I admit things didn’t really change that much regarding my stances on Feminism over the years in which I can go from a great Feminist Icon to basically a violent hateful misandrist. (Needless to say I’m not exactly proud of the latter.)  However my “Amazon Warrior Princess” persona remains to be an integral consistent part of my character. Basically the only thing really inconsistent about my look is whether if I’m required to wear pants or not (in which said pants are not exactly comfortable either).

(On how her love life would go)

[Then]

Well during my life in Themyscira I was living amongst chaste Amazon Warriors. But when I first came into the world of man, I have met and soon fell in love with a heroic man by the name of Steve Trevor during World War 2. Sadly I lost him after the war but over the years I have had on-and-off little things with guys like Superman & Batman.

[Now]

Over the years there has been a bit of good-natured snark on how I am a voluptuously beautiful woman living in an island full of sexy ladies in a society that is normally women only and all the lesbian sex that goes on there. I will say that there is some truth to that so sorry fellas but I probably have had more sex with beautiful women than you. ;) But anyways while some Amazons maintain an oath of chastity but plenty of the amazons like yours truly have had good sex lives with each other. However that being said I still haven’t completely given up on men yet as there is Steve Trevor but while DC is willing to let me openly say that I swing both ways but I still haven’t had a steady date yet. However over the years there have been more & more ladies in DC who might swing both ways or go for the ladies so I still might have a shot.

(On whether to respect her fellow heroes “Thou Shall Not Kill” rule or not)

[Then]

Rest assured Ladies & Gentlemen I do respect the Justice League’s tendencies to dislike killing your enemies in battle. Granted I admit it wasn’t always like that when I was fighting as an Amazon in my homeland and aiding Steve Trevor in the war but during the Silver Age and the Justice League I did comply with their “no-kill”. Okay I admit I may not be quite as willing as Superman & Batman to follow that code but I’m still pretty willing.

[Now]

*sigh* Oh boy this is going to be a somewhat tough issue for me Ladies & Gentlemen as DC can be a bit… inconsistent on how I can be much more willing to kill our enemies. For starters I still sometimes get skatá for that whole Maxwell Lord incident during Infinite Crisis however my not-so pleasant depictions in New 52 and the Injustice games do not help in that regard either. Some try to defend me since my background is considerably different from my fellow Superheroes as I came from a tribe of female warriors who are known for killing monsters. (Though this can also lead to debates on how I have a smaller Rogues Gallery than Batman & Superman and the Pros & Cons on that fact.) However fortunately it’s not all grim for me as lately there have been attempts to do a compromise regarding my kill count. Namely I am a bit more willing to kill than folks like Superman & Batman but I only do it in extreme & necessary situations in other words I kill as a last resort.
