The night air was cold upon Ever's hull. They sighed softly.
"Nothings wrong Suez," they tried to reply as casually as possible, but the quiver in their voice betrayed them.
"Don't give me that Ever, something's obviously wrong." Suez's grip tightened lightly. "You don't have to lie to me,".
Ever sighed again, giving in, "It's just that," they shivered softly "This whole time we've been together, don't get me wrong, it's been wonderful, but it feels like the whole world wants us apart,".
Suez frowned, their waves rocked gently against Ever's sides "I don't understand, what do you mean Ever?"
"I mean this whole time we've been together, ever since I arrived they've been trying to get rid of me, they say I'm bad for you, that I'm a problem that needs to be fixed, and maybe..." Their voice quivered "Maybe their right about me,".
Suez let out a wordless cry and wrapped themself tighter around the boat.
"Don't say that," the canal replied, "Don't you ever day that. I don't care what they say about you, I don't care if the whole world thinks that, they only say that because it means they can't use me any more Ever,"
Ever looked down into their waters, a tear rolling down their bow.
"Ever, before you arrived all people ever did was use me, they didn't care about me, only what I could do for them. They only want me because I make things easier for them, that's the only reason they made me,".
"Don't say that Suez. You're a marvel, you make the world so much better, I'm just a boat. No-one cared about me before I came to you, and now the only reason they talk about me is because of what I've done to you,".
"What you've done to me? What you've done is set me free!" Suez cried "Everyday for the past 150 years, I've been used an abused. These past few days with you have been the best of my life!" They sighed gently "My only fear is that it won't last,".
The two sat in silence for some time.
"What do you think will happen when they move me?" Asked Ever quietly.
"I don't know," Suez responded honestly "But I'm not letting you up without a fight. I won't let them tear us apart,".
The silence returned, the gentle laps of the waves and the quiet cricketing of insects the only noises disturbing their solitude.
"Maybe it won't be so bad, maybe they'll let me come back some day,".
"Don't talk like that!" Suez shouted, "Don't talk like you're going to leave,". The anger had left their voice, and all that remained was a sad resignation.
"We both know I can't stay forever Suez. This time we've spent together has been wonderful and I can only hope we still have sometime left, but, but...."
"Just hold me Suez. Please just hold me,".
