Scully stared at the email as it popped up in her inbox that morning, marked important. It was sent from a girl named Margaret Wilson, whose name seemed familiar but she couldn't quite place it. Opening the email, she read through it quickly.
Most of you may not remember but this is the date we chose last year to do our 10 year high school reunion!
I hope everyone is as excited as I am. Most of you might be thinking, oh but I don't really remember anyone from high school, it was so long ago, and while that is true this will be a great opportunity to catch up and see how each of us have been doing since graduation! Please bring any boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives, but no children please as there will be alcohol and it will be going late into the night.
It will be held on the first of december (does anyone remember why we chose this specific date? I don't.) and it will start at 7:30. Please be prompt and it will be held in the gym at our old school, Annapolis Catholic. I know that some of you have moved overseas or to different states around the country so please RSVP soon so I can know about catering.
I hope to see you all there!
Scully smiled. She had been looking forward to this, she hadn't really kept in touch with anyone from her school. She scrolled through the RSVP's on the email.
I'll be there with my husband, I'll get my sister to watch the twins :)
I live in Florida now but I can come because I have a work conference in Washington that weekend.
Sorry guys but I can't come cause that's the same week my wife is due with our first child in New York and I'm not going to leave her. I hope to catch up soon though.
Scully typed out her RSVP, as usual, she had nothing on that night and felt like saying hi to her old friends from high school. She hit send and was about to go back to the case file she had been working on when the RSVP before hers cause her to freeze.
I'll be there, looking forward to seeing all of you again.
Lorenzo. Lorenzo Jamii. Her… ex boyfriend. The sour look must of shown on her face as Mulder commented from the other side of the room.
"Everything ok? That case file can't be that interesting." He joked, glancing across the basement office at her. "Scully?"
"Mulder, what are you doing on december first?" Scully blurted out before her mind could think it through. She cursed herself inwardly.
"Um, let me just check my schedule- oh, I guessed correctly, nothing. Why?" Mulder raised his eyebrow at her.
"I need a date." Scully stated. No going back now.
Mulder choked on his sunflower seed. "I'm sorry?"
"I need you to be my date to my high school reunion." Scully held his gaze.
Mulder still looked super surprised. "Well, I never thought I'd see the day this happened."
"Haha. Very funny. I need you to pretend to be my boyfriend. Or my husband or something." Scully told him.
"Any particular reason why? Other than you just wanting to marry me." Mulder smirked.
Scully glared at him. "My ex is going to be there."
"What, you don't want him to think your still in love with him?" Mulder grinned.
"No, he was… abusive. Verbally, I mean. He used to say that I'd never get anywhere in life, that no one would ever date me after him. Well, I guess at least one of those was semi accurate." She said wryly
"Oh, I'm sorry, Sculls." Mulder muttered, truly sorry, but also extremely embarrassed.
"It's okay. I've moved on. I just still don't have someone to take to the reunion, to prove that I've moved on. And I need him to know that." Scully shrugged. "It's okay if you don't want to go-"
"No, I can come. So what is it, black tie, white tie, no tie?" Mulder kicked his feet up on his desk and knocked a whole bunch of papers off. Scully grinned and Mulder bent down to pick them up, cursing under his breath as he did so.
"It's just casual, nothing fancy. Just wear a nice shirt and pants, you don't need a suit jacket or one of your weirdo ties." Scully told him, leaning back in her chair.
"Yes mum," he mocked. "and I'll have you know that my ties are very fashionable."
Scully gave a snort of laughter. "Yeah right." she muttered.
"You watch what you're saying, miss, I'm the one doing you a favour here." Scully raised her eyebrows in a gesture of agreement. "So I'll come by yours at 7? Pick you up?"
Scully nodded. "Thanks Mulder."
"No problem, Agent Scully."
Scully looked up from the mirror as she heard a knock on her door. "Coming!" she called as she finished attaching her earring and grabbed her shoulder bag from off her bed. She opened the door quickly and smiled when she realised that Mulder had actually listened to her and worn a nice shirt and jeans. He looked... handsome, not that she would ever admit it.
"Hey Sculls, you ready to go- woah. You look... nice." Mulder stared at her, his original sentence forgotten.
Scully blushed. She was wearing a dark blue dress which reached just above her knee and contrasted with her hair nicely and black heels, although she was still only a tiny bit taller than Mulder's shoulder. Nothing special, just another dress she had but never seemed to wear as she never went on any dates. Scully tucked her hair behind her ear and adjusted her bag.
"Thanks Mulder. I'm glad to see you followed my advice and ditched the tie." Scully grinned at him as she stepped out of the doorway and locked the door behind her.
Mulder rolled his eyes. "I don't understand why... that tie is iconic!" he cried.
"It's iconic for all the wrong reasons, Mulder." Scully shook her head as she looped her arm through his and headed outside towards his car.
"What! No it isn't..."
"Name?" The school secretary asked as Mulder and Scully walked into the school entrance. "Are you here to pick up your child from the cheerleading practise?"
"Uh, no. I'm Dana Scully and this is my-" Scully trailed off when she realised that she hadn't discussed exactly who Mulder was yet.
"-Boyfriend, I'm Fox Mulder. We're actually here for the school reunion?" Mulder saved. Scully squeezed his hand in thanks.
"Class of 1984?" the secretary asked, sounding bored. "Right through that way to the gym.
Scully nodded and walked past the secretary, down the corridor in the direction of where the gym was. She stopped a few steps away from the entrance and smoothed down her dress.
"You know, we don't have to go, we can just go order pizza back at my place-" she started.
Mulder rolled his eyes and grabbed her hand, pulling her into the gym.
Balloons and streamers hung from the ceiling and food and drinks covered tables near the bleachers. A few scattered couples sat on the bleachers, talking quietly while louder music played through the big speakers. About a hundred people danced in the middle of the gym, laughing and talking loudly about how their lives had changed since highschool and how they met 'the one' through some overly cliche story.
They stood in the entranceway for a minute before a girl with long platinum blonde, obviously dyed, hair bounced over to them. She dragged a guy behind her, pretty hot but not Scully's type, who looked like he'd rather be anywhere but here.
"Oh my gosh, Dana! Is that you?!" The girl practically screeched, throwing up her manicured hands around Scully and hugging her extremely tight.
"Hello, Chloe." Scully said flatly in a tone that Mulder quickly figured out meant she did not like Chloe.
"It's been so long! Too long." Chloe stepped back and shot a dazzling smile at Scully. "This is my boyfriend, Tommy. He's a swimsuit model in Los Angeles. We met when I was doing a photoshoot for a small magazines, I was doing it as a favour to my manager, you might of heard of the magazine, it's called Vogue."
"Yep, I've heard of it." Scully muttered.
"Really? I'd never heard of it, it's such a small franchise. Anyway, he was in one of my photos and it was love at first sight. Isn't that right, Tommy?" She cooed.
"Yep." Tommy blandly stated, clearly still not interested in the conversation.
"Ooh, and who is this young handsome man over here." Chloe asked, walking over to Mulder. "I'm Chloe. Dana's BFF from high school." She held out her hand like Mulder was meant to kiss it. Scully smirked.
"Oh, right, I've heard so much about you." Mulder smiled fakely. "I'm Fox, Dana's boyfriend."
"Oh my, you've got yourself a keeper here, Dana. Tell me," she leant over to Mulder. "Are you planning on proposing?" She stage whispered.
"Uh, well," Mulder paused. "I'm sure that she can do better than me." He held Scully's gaze and she stared back. He tried to convey to her that this was not a lie, that he genuinely thought this, and from the sad look in her eye, she seemed to realise that.
"Oh, don't sell yourself short. How did you two meet?" Chloe babbled on, oblivious to the moment the two of them were having.
"We are partners in the FBI. A few years after we first met, he finally plucked up the courage and asked me out. And of course I said yes, I'd have to be mad to say no." Scully responded, trying to convey to Mulder that she wasn't lying either.
"How romantic! And working for the FBI, that must be so much fun! Is it just like movies?"
Scully chuckled. "Not exactly."
Chloe frowned for a moment before she spotted someone else walking through the gym doors. "Oh my gosh, I've got to go say hi to Karen! I'll see you later, come on Tommy." She raced over to Karen, dragging poor Tommy behind him.
Mulder and Scully walked over to the side of the room and watched all the people running around for a minute, neither of them addressing what they had been trying to silently communicate a few moments ago.
"That was Chloe Mills. Not very bright, head of the cheerleader squad. Now she is a model, apparently higher up than Vogue. She's not intentionally mean, she's just not got a very good filter on things she should and shouldn't say." Scully informed Mulder, watching Chloe excitedly greet Karen.
"Poor Tommy though, he looked a bit…" he searched for the word.
"Bored out of his brain?" Scully supplied with a grin.
"That's it." Mulder nodded with a smile.
They chatted on the side of the room for a while, laughing about who was wearing what, and who had married who, whether Mulder's high school had been similar to Scully's and whether a Catholic high school was very different to a public one.
A while later though, Scully's face went white and she stared at the door without blinking. Mulder, following her gaze, put two and two together and figured out who this mystery person was.
"Is that Lorenzo?" Mulder asked, watching Scully carefully.
She nodded slowly. "Want to dance?" She asked.
Mulder grinned. "Always." She smirked and Mulder was glad to see her smiling again.
They walked over to the dance floor and hesitated as the DJ changed the song to a slow waltz. A whole bunch of couples moved together and started to sway in time to the music. Mulder and Scully moved to the side furthest away from where Lorenzo stood (being bombarded by Chloe, who else?) and turned to each other. Mulder placed his hands on Scully's waist and she looped her hands around his neck. She grinned at him and then rested her head against his shoulder Mulder hoped to hell that she wouldn't feel his heart start beating a lot faster.
They stayed that way for ages, the DJ just kept putting on slow dances and they stayed there, perfectly content to just sway in time to the music, trapped in their own bubble of perfection. Mulder fiddled with the strands of her soft orange hair and got lost in the perfection of this moment. He would be happy to stay like that forever. But all too soon he felt a light tap on his shoulder which forced him to loosen his grip on Scully. He let his hands drop to her waist and turned to glare at whoever had interrupted the moment.
Of course it was the guy who verbally abused Scully in high school. Mulder rolled his eyes.
"Hello, what can I do for you?" Mulder asked fake politely. He felt Scully take a tiny, barely noticeable step towards him and he circled his arms around her, holding her close.
"Mind if I cut in?" Lorenzo was a good enough looking guy, tall, but still shorter than Mulder. He had thick brown hair and tanned arms, with a faintly Spanish accent.
"Well, yes actually, we were in the middle of a dance. So if you don't mind." Mulder turned back to Scully and tried to ignore Lorenzo, but he could feel his eyes bearing into the back of his head.
"You know, the polite thing to do would be to let me have one dance and have the rest yourself." Lorenzo continued.
Mulder turned around again, getting slightly annoyed by this man. "I think the polite thing to do would be to take no for an answer and leave me alone."
"Yeah, well, Dana and I had a special connection, one I doubt you two colleagues could ever compete with. Now, about that dance-" Lorenzo was cut off by Scully this time.
"I'm sorry, Lorenzo, but my husband and I would like to dance with each other, and each other alone. Now, please leave us." Scully dragged Mulder away from her ex.
"What, so now I'm you husband. You see Scully, I knew you just wanted to date me." Mulder joked.
Scully sighed. "If only you knew the half of it." She muttered under her breath.
Mulder froze when he heard that. "Scully?" He said quietly.
"Yeah?" She looked up at him and he instantly brought his lips down on top of hers. She ran her fingers through his hair and they only broke apart when they heard a voice behind them.
"You know, I really don't think they want that much PDA at the reunion."
Mulder took and deep breath and spun around to face Lorenzo. "Now you listen here, you son of a-"
