Be Here to Love Me

Chapter Text

“Its the hardest thing that I’ve ever done
To love somebody and still run”

At first they shared a room because they were students. Five hotel rooms and three countries later, it wasn’t a rooming situation born out of convenience. It was a rooming situation that gave extra emphasis to touches that lasted too long to be considered friendly or glances that made cheeks burn fiery red. After a while they decided on abandoning the other bed and favoring the mess of tangled limbs they would become in the morning. An unspoken agreement kept them from a proper confession. Afraid that saying something and putting a label on whatever they had would make it too real. But time passed and tensions were rising as the 50 days DIO offered were running out. If nothing was said now, then when? The two boys played under the stars on the sandy desert floor, Kakyoin pointing out constellations while Jotaro quietly listened. It was hot and the air made their palms sticky but they gripped each other with steady hands and an intensity that kept them anchored. Jotaro looked over at the other boy and it became abundantly clear that he was hopelessly in love. The curve of his jaw, how his brow creased when he was concentrating, the soft part of his lips and the breath of surprise that left him when the dark haired boy blurted out that he loved him. Noriaki turned to face him fully and kissed him. He didn’t need a verbal reply. This was good enough. The touch of warm lips saying what words couldn’t.

It was all they could do to keep their hands to themselves. No matter how many times the two boys lips met it never seemed to be enough. Their hands roamed each others bodies making notes of every dimple, scar or scratch. Fingers traced the outlines of exhausted, bruised bodies, reciting every curve to memory. Chapped lips brushing together when no one was around to see. Adrenaline coursing through their veins. The brush of lips bringing more excitement than any stand user ever could. Being together made this trip seem bearable. Waking up in the same bed, brushing their teeth and exchanging tooth paste kisses while still half asleep. Little moments like these made long, endless days a little bit easier.

Noriaki and Jojo were only 17 when the fate of Holly, along with the whole world was placed on their shoulders. Sometimes it felt like they were suffocating beneath everyones expectations. No matter how many enemy stand users they defeated, the pressure never lessened. Even though neither of them had admitted outright that they were scared, it was obvious in the way that they held each other. Clinging to one another under dingy hotel blankets, listening to steady breaths and hearts that beat in sync, confirming that against all odds they were still alive. Both boys knew that there was no guarantee that they’d leave Egypt with their lives still intact, however they still giggled like school girls and bickered over what color curtains their future home would have. Jotaro insisted they live near the ocean. Of course Noriaki agreed, so long as he got to choose the modern architecture he longed for. Perhaps it was naive to make plans like these, to create a future that wasn’t guaranteed, but love is a funny thing so they did anyways.

Jotaro didn’t see it. He didnt see Noriaki proudly stand in front of DIO, exclaiming that he had been cornered, that there was nothing more the immortal being could do. He didn’t see when time stopped and the enemy moved with quick and concise movements, a smile as wide as it was sinister. He didn’t see a hit that was dealt with the intent to kill. It was probably for the best that all he did see was Noriaki’s limp body being peeled off the water tower and stuffed into the back of an ambulance. Even that was too much. It was all he could do to continue standing. His vision blurred. Jotaro collapsed onto his knees and cried.

After 6 intense surgery’s, a metal spine implant courtesy of the Speedwagon Foundation and countless organ transplants, Noriaki was alive. Maybe not awake but alive nonetheless. Jotaro didn’t want to blame himself for Noriaki’s less than desirable outcome. At first he didn’t. This was quite obviously DIO’s fault. They wouldn’t even have traveled to Egypt if it wasn’t for an immortal vampire that decided he wanted to play god. No matter how many times these thoughts ran through his head he couldn’t help but blame himself. He should’ve said no when the other boy insisted on joining. He should’ve been faster, stronger, been more aware. It’s unfair and illogical to think in this way but he can’t stop himself. He was standing on the sidelines while Noriaki was taking on the role of protagonist in a story that wasn’t even his to begin with. Now he was fighting for his life while Jotaro was virtually unharmed. Sitting at the table, drinking coffee in their beach house was rather tempting, in fact there nothing Jotaro wanted more. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond his control he was destined to be drawn into situations that could potentially cost him and others their lives. The future that Kakyoin deserves doesn’t have room for the drama that his star birthmark brings. He deserves peace and stability, something that Jotaro can’t give him. So he leaves. If the other boy wakes up, Jotaro isn’t there to see it. He knows that if he were to stay until Kakyoin was awake he wouldn’t be able to stay away. It hurts but its a choice made out of love and hope for a better future.

Kakyoin awakens in the hospital a year later.

"When the boys and me are getting
So out of control
You remind me of you
Yes you do now
You remind me of you"

Jotaro Kujo likes a lot of things. He likes the beach, he likes starfish, the smell of the ocean in the morning, his moms cooking.. However, what he doesn’t like, is his ex-boyfriend showing up without warning, on a boat with his grandfather.

“N-Noriaki?”

Kakyoin glances over from Okuyasu’s exaggerated retelling of some stand fight. “Oh? Jotaro?”

He tipped his cap over his eyes blocking the visible disappointment on his face. He was always Jojo, never Jotaro. The boat suddenly felt way too small.

“Oh wow! You guys know each other?”

“We uh.. We..” Jotaro couldn’t find the right words. He was unsure what to call him. Ex? Partner? Lover? Friend? Pal?

“We fought together in Egypt” Kakyoin said. The smile on his face was polite. It looked genuine to the untrained eye. Jotaro knew better. He knew it was fake.

It looked as if Okuyasu had a million questions on the tip of his tongue. Luckily they were interrupted by the boat docking. Jotaro quickly made his way off the boat avoiding eye contact with his ex.

As soon as Kakyoin walked off the boat he was swarmed by the kids, questions being thrown at him. Who he was, did he have a stand, what he was doing here. Jotaro took this chance to pull Joseph aside and ask him what the fuck was going on.

“What the hell is this?” He asks slightly gesturing toward the red head.

“Kakyoin? He;s here to assist in the hunt. He works for the Speedwagon foundation so they sent him out with me.”

Oh? So thats how it was. Its not like this was some deliberate ploy to bring them back together. It was just a coincidence. Still didn’t make it easier to swallow.

The group made their way back to the hotel, the kids finding Kakyoin much more interesting than the task at hand.

“Alright we’ll meet at Jotaro’s room in 2 hours to discuss our plan,” Josuke exclaims.

Everyone parts ways leaving Jotaro, Kakyoin and Joseph standing outside the hotel.

“Well I’m going to go unpack my things and take a quick nap, I’m quite tired,” Kakyoin says as he walks inside.

Jotaro definitely does not like this.

Once reaching his room Kakyoin doesn’t bother to unpack his things. He collapses onto the bed and tells himself he’ll deal with his luggage later. After his many surgeries, being active for multiple hours makes things extremely difficult, even though he would never admit that. His spine implant causes problems regularly making it difficult to move around on some days. Not that it stops him from doing whatever he wants. Although he tries not to think about the fact that Jotaro is in the same town working on the same case, he can’t help but wonder what stars aligned for this to happen. Although he’s over whatever they had he was nowhere near ready to face him again. He had given up on him long ago and continued with his life as he did before. He didn’t need him then and he sure as hell doesn’t need him now.

Kakyoin wakes up to pounding on his door. He quickly glances at his phone and sees 5 missed calls from Joseph. He’s 30 minutes late to their meeting. Shit. Not the best first impression. He swings the door open and sees Jotaro standing in his doorway.

“The old man sent me to get you,” he states as he averts his gaze to the unpacked bags in the room.

“Ahh, right, Im- Im sorry let me quickly grab my things.”

It was embarrassing to be late on his first day in town, but his thoughts were forced elsewhere. He ached everywhere and just wanted to sleep. He had pain killers in his bag but he didn’t want to waste time and grab them so he threw on his green cardigan and walked to Jotaro’s room. He knew he would suffer the consequences later but his aching body didn’t take priority.

“So,” Jotaro starts as he spread papers out on the table. “Ill do a quick recap and then we can get onto the new information. As we have recently found out-“

“Thanks to us!” Rohan interrupts as he gestures between himself and Koichi with a smug smile on his face.

Josuke groans.

“Anyways. We’ve recently discovered that there is a serial killer that has been running rampant in Morioh for quite some time. We’re going to split up and search this town for any clues.”

He quickly informed them of any other clues he had found in the past few days.

“Okay thats all for now. Any questions?”

As he glanced around the room he noticed Kakyoin feverishly scribbling into a small notebook. He used Star Platinum to get a better look at what he was doing when he saw Heirophant extended out the window surveying the city as Kakyoin took down anything worth noting.

Jotaro silently laughed to himself. Some things never changed.

“If you wanted to know what was in my notebook you could’ve just asked.”

Kakyoins sudden statement pulled Jotaro from his thoughts. Heirophant had a tentacle wrapped around Stars arm, holding him tightly in place. He brought his stand back and tipped his hat down to hide his rising blush. Observant as ever he supposes.

“Alright lets go! Okuyasu and I will head out first!” Josuke exclaims.

“Perfect Koichi and I will be going as well,” Rohan says as he backs up his things and drags Koichi out by the collar.

“And Im heading to my room for a nap. Im not the young adventurer I used to be!”

“Well then, I suppose its just me and you.”

Kakyoin gives a light smile to Jotaro. Its a small smile, barely noticeable, but the most sincere one so far. It made his heart skip a beat.

Kakyoin isnt sure how long they’ve been walking through the town, but what he does know id that he’s extremely tired. His pain has only gotten worse since this afternoon and all he wants is to sleep for 3 days.

“Well we haven’t really found anything, lets just call it a day”

“Are you sure?” He wonders if Jotaro can tell that he’s tired..

He grunts in response.

When Kakyoin makes it back to his room he quickly takes his pills and slams into his bed. He falls asleep within minutes. When he awakes the next morning he quickly realizes that this is ‘one of those days’. He was barely able to make it to the bathroom to take his morning dose of medications let alone wander around town all day. He debates on calling and telling everyone that he caught a case of food poisoning. He decides against it and calls up Jotaro’s room.

“Hello? Kakyoin?”

“Hello, yes it is me.”

*Silence*

“I uhm… Im not feeling well today so I wont be able to make it.. I uh… I-“

“Hey its fine, Okuyasu can’t go so I’ll just be with Josuke. Nothing to worry about.”

Relief washes over him.

“If you can make it to my room for the meeting though..”

“Yes of course Ill be there in 20.”

He quickly showers and makes his way to Jotaro’s room. He uses Heirophant as a crutch to brace some of his weight. Its a slow process but he finally makes it to the meeting.

When he walks in the door everyone is already gathered around the table. Kakyoin takes the seat between Jotaro and Rohan.

“Alright so yesterday I found out about a stand user in a remote countryside not too far from here. Josuke and I will be heading out there today. Is there anything else we’ve found?”

Everyone shakes their head.

“Okay easy enough. Same today as yesterday. We’ll meet back here at 7.”

Everyone packs up their stuff and begins to leave.

“Oh, are you not heading out with us Mr. Kakyoin?” Josuke asks.

“No not today, I’m not feeling too well.”

“Thats too bad, I was hoping to see you in action.”

“Raincheck? I promise to take you out and show you what naturally born stand users are all about,” he says with a wink.

Jotaro rolls his eyes. Ever the charmer he thinks to himself.

He sends Josuke out ahead of him and walks over to the table where the other boys sits.

“You could stay here.”

Kakyoin sets his pencil down and lifts his gaze.

“What?”

“For today, y- you can stay in my room so that you’ll be here for tonights meeting..” He trails off. A slight blush creeps up the back of his neck.

“Oh I see. Sure I’ll wait here for everyone.”

Jotaro nods. “Feel free to sleep in my bed if you get tired I wont mind.”

Before he can even give a response Jotaro is slamming the door behind him. Kakyoin stares at the door and wonders hat that was all about. He realizes that he’s much more tired than he originally thought and makes his way to the bed. It smells nostalgic. It smells safe. It smells like home. It smells like… like Jotaro. No matter how many times he tells himself that he’s over their breakup, a small piece of his heart still belongs to the boy who saved his life. No matter how many times he tries to forget, he can’t. Finally he drifts off to sleep and dreams of nights under the desert sky.
