Work Text:

Bars and parties weren't really her scene, but those were the places Jiro thrived. And stronger than her dislike for loud and crowded spaces was Momo's feelings for the DJ.

They had met at school, became friends after a week, and after three months, they started dating.

Now, they were in university and Jiro was a well established DJ, which was rare for someone who wasn't even twenty-three yet.

While Jiro was working, Momo would sit at the bar, in a corner that let her see everything but dulled the ambiance of the crowded building, and would either watch or work on her homework. Jiro would sometimes ask how she could concentrate but the answer wasn't very helpful.

The two of them would get to the bar or club an hour or two before it opened to set up all Jiro's equipment. The first few shows were tough, neither of them knew where to unload, park, where everything went; the equipment that the bars already was very different than the gear Jiro was used to in their dorm room.

22 and confused

On what to do and how to set it up

That night there were a few local performers that went before Jiro had to take the stage so, she and Momo got some drinks. Jiro only had one, so Momo wouldn't be the only one drinking. Momo thought it was a sweet, but unnecessary gesture.

"Are you sure you should be drinking? You need to go up in a few minutes."

"I'll be fine, Mo. Don't worry." Jiro's phone buzzed. "Alright, looks like I need to go get ready. I'll meet you here after the show." Jiro kissed Momo before making her way through the growing crowd.

Not five minutes later her voice was cracking through the speakers. "How's everyone's night so far?" The crowd erupted and started cheering. "Great! I have a new track just for you guys."

The noise just increased when she started playing the new playlist. The body's started moving and the shouting grew. But Momo only saw Jiro. She was beautiful up in the stage light. Her hair was styled away from her face and she had her signature choker. Her outfit might as well have been trademarked by her. Her rainbow and lesbian pride flags caught the light with every jump.

With every build up the crowd would still, moving as one as they waited for the beat to drop. When it did, they all exploded once more. Their reaction always brought a smile to Jiro's face.

Kind of drunk, sort of high

She's a broken Miss America

Every night Jiro was on stage, Momo found herself thinking about how long it had taken for Jiro to accept that what Momo wanted to have with her was real. Real and not likely to ever go away.

Relationships in general with Jiro had never been that good. She had never dated anyone before Momo, but most of her friendships never ended well. Most of them using her for her good grades and to get to other people. They had all eventually left her for whatever reason. So, in the end, Jiro had had some trust issues.

But Momo has always been so patient. Waiting with grace for Jiro to learn that she wasn't going anywhere soon.

Never learned how to love

Cause the answers are stuck behind closed doors

On cue, the light show began at the beginning of Jiro's second song. Pulsing to the beat of the song. Changing colors every few seconds.

The crowd once again cheered louder, if that was possible. Jumping up and down, swaying and twisting, pushing and pulling. Enjoying every minute of being there.

You can call it a night

When the lights in the club don't shine no more

Ooohhh

When the fourth song died out Jiro grabbed her mic. "Alright you animals. I'm loving the energy. But as is costum, grab a partner for a slow song. Friend or stranger, doesn't matter. Just no feeling anyone up unless they say it's ok. This song goes out to all my friends. You know who you are and I love all of you.

The lights dimmed and turned purple.

When the lights in the club don't shine no more

Ooohh

When the lights in the club don't shine no more

Momo moved from her seat and headed to the bathroom. They did this during every gig. Jiro would put on a chill song, giving everyone a chance to recharge, grab a drink, make a move on their dates, or just to dance with a stranger. They would meet in the bathroom to let Jiro breathe.

Momo was waiting just inside the door when Jiro opened the door. Jiro's hand instantly found Momo's hip. She pulled her closer, pressing lips on lips.

Jiro pulled away just enough to speak. "I love you."

"I love you too."

Jiro pushed forward again and didn't pull away until she couldn't breathe. "I want to go home now."

"Any particular reason?" Momo asked. Knowing to keep the question broad and neutral. Not assuming something was wrong.

"Just not feeling it tonight. And I should probably be studying for the test I have in a few days."

"All valid reasons." Momo continued to kiss Jiro, slowly moving from her cheeks down to her neck.

"Can I just ditch the rest of the night?" Jiro asked, leaning against the counter.

"I mean you can, but then I don't think this bar will ask you back anymore. Plus, tonight's busy, a little extra cash tonight."

"Sometimes, I hate it when you make sense."

Momo hummed. "You and me both."

We're just tryna figure out

"C'mon, you gotta get back out there." Momo pulled Jiro from the counter and pushed her to the door.

As Jiro made her way back on stage, Momo found her seat. The song ended and a new one immediately took its place. The beat picking up, lyrics rising and falling, lights dancing. The crowd immediately switched back to jumping to the beat.

Only dreams 'bout the lights

So he's having trouble getting up

Momo watched as the tired expression on Jiro's face from the bathroom stayed in its place. It was well hidden to the strangers in front of her by a smile, but Momo knew that the crease in her brow was too prominent and her smile was too tight.

He's convinced only Kanye knows how to make it in America

But once the music picked up and brought the crowd with it, Jiro looked around and the smile became more and more sincere. Jiro found where her girlfriend was sitting and all tiredness drained from her body.

Never learned how to love

Cause the answers are stuck in all of the lights

The lights strobed as the build up to a song kept going. When the beat dropped, it was like fireworks inside. It was beautiful, and only slightly aggravating.

It was almost three in the morning when the last song was being played. The bar was slowly starting to empty. The night was winding down.

The bar was empty. Only employees walking around, cleaning the floors and tables. Momo was talking to the bartender when Jiro grabbed her hand and pulled her back to the bathroom.

A makeout session later, Jiro was digging through her purse.

"What are you looking for?" Momo asked, hoping up onto the counter.

Jiro didn't answer, just kept digging through her purse.

We're just tryna figure out

Momo grabbed the purse from her, holding it out from her reach.

"Hey! Give it back, Mo!" Jiro reached for the bag but could grab hold.

"I'm looking for my lipstick." She made another lunge for the bag but missed.

"Why do you need it? You're just gonna go home and wash it off in the shower."

"Pass it over and I'll show you." A sly smile passed over her features and Momo couldn't say no.

Momo pulled the golden tube out and passed it over.

Jiro uncapped it and twisted it a little.

She walked over to one of the stalls and walked inside. She kept the door open and scribbled something on the wall.

Momo walked over and laughed when she read the dark lipstick. She pulled Jiro out of the stall and kissed her.

"Come on, let's go home."
