They talk about the past as though it’s been ages, as though they are grandfathers, reminiscing. Jimin knows that they’re all keenly aware how ridiculous that is, and yet they can’t seem to stop.
“Remember when we were young,” Yoongi says, tilting his glass and studying the drop of whiskey still in it. “We thought this would be the -- the pinnacle of everything.”
“Isn’t it?” Jimin asks, chin on his hand. He’s not sure why Yoongi decided to drag him along to the fanciest whiskey bar in Paris, but he has to admit it is pretty fancy. He has no real whiskey preference, so he’s just drinking whatever the bartender (Host? He has no idea what the correct title is for this very friendly man) is recommending. “I mean, I never had whiskey dreams of the future..”
“I did,” Yoongi says, nodding to himself. “Not in the beginning, obviously, because I was a baby, younger than Jungkook, but I read a lot of airplane magazines, okay?”
Yoongi gives him a slightly confused frown, then smiles. “I’m serious! I didn’t know what rich looked like! Fancy whiskey seemed like a decent enough marker! Don’t laugh at me, you brat.”
“I’m not laughing at you! Well, not much,” Jimin admits. “I just would’ve thought your goal would be unlimited gadgets or something. Or winning a Grammy. A fancy watch. You know.”
“Well, that too, but equipment seemed like something I could get if I just worked hard enough. Winning a Grammy is…” Yoongi trails off and laughs. “A dream? But the whiskey… that stuff… You know how Namjoon and Hoseok are always talking about property investments and stuff? Like an abstract kind of rich people thing? Whiskey was my abstract-but-not rich people thing.”
“I don’t think I have one,” Jimin says thoughtfully.
Yoongi waits until he’s been given a short spiel about another kind of whiskey in an English they only kind of understand. “You love buying stuff though. Way more than I do.”
“Yeah, but that’s different. Though, true, five years ago, shopping for anything seemed like a bit of a pipe dream.”
“A lot of things did,” Yoongi says. He’s looking in Jimin’s direction but his expression is what Jimin has mentally named Yoongi’s “Hobi-face”.
Jimin is surprised. “You were into Hoseok-hyung back then?”
Yoongi shakes his head. “How’d you know I thinking of him?”
“You get a ...face.” Jimin gestured. “It’s cute. Anyway, I thought -- we all thought -- you guys were recent?”
“It is. We are. Kind of. It’s hard to really… You know what I was like.”
Jimin nods. Yoongi still isn’t the first one to open up, still doesn’t really reach out for himself, but he’s better than he used to be. He had been the first one to admit to needing help to deal mentally, and Jimin had never thought Yoongi weak for needing help, but he’d thought himself weak for it. He still did, but he’d gotten better at recognizing when he was spiraling and stopping himself from doing it. Hoseok had helped a lot, mainly by refusing to indulge him.
“I hated him sometimes,” Yoongi says, fondly, “because he wouldn’t leave me alone.”
“He’s good at that.”
“He really is.”
It’s not that Hoseok is particularly insistent if people would rather be left alone, it’s more that he’s always there, making sure you know he’s always there.
“But you were never…” Jimin does a quick check to make sure they’re still being ignored by everyone else in the bar, but lowers his voice anyway. “You weren’t fucking then?”
Yoongi eyes him.
“I know you weren’t together together until you told us, but I thought that sometimes… Hoseok-hyung never tells me these things, but I just thought that sometimes…” Jimin trails off. He’s a little worried that he’s going to start spilling his guts. Because, well. “Because I know I’ve definitely thought about fucking Hoseok-hyung before.”
Oh great. Here we go. Jimin sighs. This is why he stopped going drinking with Yoongi. Much too dangerous. He just can’t keep his mouth shut.
“Oh,” Yoongi says. He is frowning. “Oh, I thought you’d-- Honestly, I thought you’d fucked around.”
Jimin stares at him, offended on Hoseok’s behalf. “Hobi-hyung wouldn’t cheat on you. How dare you. I wouldn’t either,” he adds firmly.
“No, no, I mean before we hooked up. Before we were… you know.” Yoongi blushes cutely.
Jimin squints dubiously. “You mean back when we first met and I was over-compensatingly straight? The most straight person ever?” Perhaps he hadn’t been that bad, but when he looked back, it felt like it.
Yoongi considers this for a moment then nods. “I see what you mean.”
“I wanted to though,” Jimin says and finally downs his whiskey. Jimin spent most of his early twenties in a drunken slut phase so he didn’t think that really revealed too much. They’d done a solid amount of dumb Dispatch photoshoots to keep those rumours as rumour only. He did eventually realise that the validation he craved wasn’t found with a one night stand. Still, at the time it had helped. “But I never… I wasn’t ever you, I guess.”
“Well no,” Yoongi agrees. “You’re Jimin.”
“I mean, even when you weren’t together, you were still… something. He’s never looked at me the way he looks at you.”
“That’s really not how I remember it, but okay.”
“How do you remember it?” Jimin asks, wondering, now, how Yoongi had seen himself, seen his relationship with Hoseok. From the outside it had always seemed inevitable.
Yoongi starts to say something, then breaks off with a laugh. “You’re a dangerous man, Park Jimin. Making me talk about these things.”
“You don’t have to if it’s weird.”
Yoongi looks at him. “It is. But I don’t -- I’m going to blame the whiskey if you ever bring this up again.”
“After you joined us, I felt like I was always taking him away from you.”
“Yeah, I mean, you were always the two dancey ones. You were always-- To be honest, I thought when Hoseok left, you would too. But then he came back and you were even more… Hoseok and the maknae, you know? But you’re not really a maknae--”
Jimin gasps. “Take that back.”
“I mean, not like Taehyung and Jungkook. You and Hoseok were always more…” Yoongi waves his hands vaguely. “Samey. A duo.”
Jimin blushes, oddly pleased.
Yoongi remembers the conversation. He remembers that Jimin wanted to then, and he still wants to now. And weirdly he’s not jealous. He’s not feeling the surge of possessiveness he usually feels whenever somebody gets a little too obvious about flirting with Hoseok.
(Hoseok is almost never jealous. He trusts Yoongi to the point that it would never occur to him that Yoongi would cheat on him or lie to him, and it seems like that is enough. Yoongi trusts Hoseok too, it’s not that, it’s just that he can’t help feeling jealous sometimes anyway.
He talks to Seokjin about it because Seokjin understands when Yoongi just needs to be a horrible little goblin for a bit without trying to fix it.)
“Have you ever, you know, thought about Jimin?”
“...Our friend Jimin? Uh. Yes?” Hoseok says baffled.
“No, I mean. Thought about him.” Yoongi adds all the suggestive notes he can.
Hoseok stops tidying away his clothes in his suitcase and turns to give Yoongi a long suspicious look. “Why are you asking? Have you been watching Step Up with Jungkook again?”
Hoseok still gives him a judgey look. “It’s not about your weird role playing fantasies?”
“First of all, they’re not weird, and second of all… Okay, maybe a little,” Yoongi admits, “but I just wondered if you were interested in Jimin at all? Like. If you’ve ever thought about having sex with him? Ever?”
Hoseok keeps judgey look for a bit, then he shrugs slightly. “Jimin is pretty hot, you know, and very affectionate, too. Very clingy. Yeah, I’ve thought about it.”
“Oh.” Despite asking, Yoongi isn’t sure what to do with the answer.
“You were asking me!” Hoseok protests immediately, eyes wide. “You know I can’t lie! Why are you asking me anyway? Why now?”
“Well, you know we went drinking yesterday?”
“We started talking, and I don’t know… Somehow we got into the topic and I guess I’ve been thinking about fucking Jimin since and…” Yoongi shrugs. “I guess I just wanted to know how you felt about it.”
“You want my permission to fuck Jimin? Our Jimin?” Hoseok had never made that face at him before, and Yoongi hoped he never would again. “I can’t believe you’d ask me that.”
“No! No, not me, us.”
“Like both of us, with Jimin.”
Hoseok stares at him. “You want us to fuck Jimin, our friend, who we work with and will be working with for quite a while longer?”
“…No, I guess you’re right, it’s a dumb idea.”
"I didn't even know you liked him."
Yoongi hesitates. It feels weird to admit it to Hoseok, even now, even having suggested what he did, but. "I do. But, it wouldn't be right without you."
Hoseok's look turns thoughtful. "Well, I still think it's not a good idea.”
“It didn’t have to be just fucking, you know,” Yoongi says, slowly, wondering if he’s saying the right thing but feeling like he should be saying it. “It could be… more.”
“I don’t know, hyung. I… Let’s stop talking about this now.”
But now that Yoongi has planted the thought in his head, Hoseok can’t stop thinking about it either.
Jimin is hot. That’s just undeniable fact these days.
Hoseok likes Jimin, always has, but he didn’t always think Jimin was smoking hot. He does now though.
“Yes?” Jimin looks up from the menu options on first class. He puts it down and picks up his water bottle while he waits for Hoseok to formulate his question.
“Do you want to have a threesome with me and Yoongi-hyung?”
Jimin chokes on his water. “I’m sorry what? Do I want to what?” He stares at Hoseok with wide shocked eyes and Hoseok starts backtracking immediately.
“You don’t have to!”
Jimin frowns at him. “I know I don’t have to, I’m just. What? Why this all of a sudden?”
Hoseok tilts his head. “Well… Yoongi-hyung said some things and I thought it was a good idea maybe?”
“I’m not sure it is…”
"I wasn't either, when Yoongi-hyung first suggested it, but I've been thinking about it and. I... I think..." Hoseok trails off. He doesn't actually want to convince Jimin it's a good idea, or talk him into it. He just wants to leave the door open. Let Jimin know it's an option if he wants it. "You know I love you, right?"
Jimin blushes, a pleased little tilt to his head. "Yes."
"So, I'm not just asking for sex, you know that right?" It seems important to emphasise this. "I mean, that too, but maybe we could start by dating?"
"Sometimes you're just too cute, hyung."
"Hey!" Hoseok protests, even though he doesn't mind Jimin thinking him cute. Cuteness is good! He himself calls Yoongi cute at least five times per day.
Jimin just giggles at him.
Hoseok grins back.
"Ah, let me think about it? I can't make decisions in an airplane. My brain is all scrambled," Jimin complains. "Airplane mush."
“Of course! I’m not demanding any answers right now.” Hoseok pauses, realising he’s forgotten something rather important. “Actually, I should probably talk to Yoongi first. I mean, I know he’s interested, but probably relationship negotiations should include everyone in the relationship.”
Jimin narrows his eyes. “…One of Namjoon’s books?”
The things Jimin craved when he was younger and the things he wants now are not the same. It’s maturity, probably, and probably it’s a good thing that he’s growing up, but he can’t help but think it was easier before. Wanting to get fucked by a stranger was infinitely easier than wanting to get kisses from two of his best friends. Still. He wants to try it.
Jimin holds out his hand expectantly. Yoongi blinks at him. Jimin pouts. “Isn’t handholding like a key part of your relationship?”
Hoseok starts laughing as Yoongi flushes but obediently takes Jimin’s hand. Then he reaches for Hoseok’s, who clasp it, still laughing.
Jimin beams, pleased. All right!
This is a start.
