    Summary

In Scream of the Shalka, REG!Doctor (the ninth Doctor who almost was) was seen travelling round the universe with a robotic Master for no apparent reason. The ninth Doctor (who actually was) has a much better reason for travelling with a robotic Master, given that his entire race are dead. This fic assumes that he was and that the Master just kept out of sight so as not to alarm anyone.

Ker-rist but this is brilliant. This is absolutely my favourite kind of AU – the sort that keeps surprising with just how well the author has thought it all through. (You could argue how much this truly ‘counts’ as an AU at all, of course, when every scene has been written to fit seamlessly between the scenes of canon, but I feel the point still stands.) It was obvious to me from the first where it was going to have to end, which only made the build to the last scene all the more gripping – and yet it still managed to blow my mind with the angle it took on the finale. This is not a fic you should go into expecting pure Shalka!fluff and a happy ending, but it’s a story with some very good ideas and execution that leaves nothing lacking. Consider this one very highly recommended indeed.

This story was once archived at The Prydonian, a Doctor Who fanfiction archive focusing on the relationship between the Doctor and the Master, opened by Versaphile in 2008. More information about the Open Doors-approved archive move can be found in the announcement.
