“How is she doin’ ?”
“She’s awake. I will be right in to discuss my findings”
“Can I see her ?”
“Sure, go ahead.”
Steve makes his way towards her room. Halfway towards the door he swiftly turns arounds and grabs Bruce in bear hug.
“Thanks Bruce. For everything.”
Steve once again makes his way towards the door. He opens the door slowly. Breathing in and out, before taking the leap of courage. Ever since they met, he has never seen her in a position of such vulnerability. She never let him. That’s the thing with Natasha, she hides her fears and troubles. She is not one to wear her heart on her sleeve.
Upon entering Steve has that dopey grin on his face and offers Natasha that Steve Rogers-Colgate smile.
Natasha has the slightest twinkle in her eyes and that well-known sultry smirk on her face.
“Hey baby. Well don’t you look like shit. Haven’t slept ?”
In the shy pre-serum Steve Rogers way, he shoves his hands in his front pocket and makes his way towards Natasha’s hospital bed.
“No, I haven’t. See there is this girl in our infirmary, who’s got me worried sick. Yet, she still finds ways to make fun of me.”
Steve bends down and places a soft kiss on her forehead. Natasha pulls him down by the front of his shirt and kisses him softly. Steve pulls away after a few seconds and plops down on the seat next to her bed.
“You don’t have to worry about me, Rogers.”
“I know I don’t have to worry about you. But it was part of the package you signed up for when we started this thing.”
Steve intertwines their fingers. Caressing her hand with his thumb.
“So, are you gonna tell me what happened out there, Nat?”
Natasha instantly recognizes that voice – she’s heard it enough times on mission and in debriefings. It was his Captain America voice. The voice she dreaded would one day make its way into their personal lives.
“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.”
Natasha sternly avoids eye contact. Those baby blues have gotten her in more than her share of trouble. Steve catches on to what she is doing.
“A-ha okay, I see”
Steve moves closer and once again kisses Natasha softly. He brushes his fingers across the healing bruises and gauges on Nat’s arms and chest.
“This right here, is what I am talking about.”
“Oh that, just little scratch. Nothing major.”
“Nothing major, my ass. You’re lying in the facility’s infirmary. What happened ?”
Natasha sat up from her bed. She knows the small difference in posture, will help her assert her point.
“I got a lead on Yelena and I wanted to follow up on it.”
“And you couldn’t wait for me to come home. Before going on your expedition.”
Natasha knows what he is getting at, so she decides to be short.
“Steven. I didn’t know how long I was gonna have the signal for and you were in Lagos, conducting a mission. Was I supposed to call Fury up, to hall your ass back to New York so you could help me ? You had a mission – a duty. I wasn’t gonna stand in the way of that. Besides, I had Barton.”
Steve sighes. He takes her hands in his.
“Natasha, don’t know if you’ve noticed but I would drop everything for you in a second.”
“I know you would, baby. I also know that saving the people is a much greater job and I wasn’t about to make Captain America choose. Because it’s always the people, Steve. And we both know that.”
“No, Nat. It’s the people now but you forever.”
“Wow, that was kind of cheesy.”
Steve’s face flushes with red at Natasha’s comment. He leans forward and kisses her deeply. No need in telling her, how much he loves her. The kiss says it all.
“Yeah. Like a stinky camembert.”
Steve and Natasha start laughing. The door subtly opens and Bruce enters. The laughter subsiding.
“Hey, Doc. What do you have for me?
Bruce smiles in awkward Banner-fashion and proceeds to tell them the news.
“Well, seems like you been injected with some kind of serum to counter act the Red Room
serum in your system.”
“That bitch. She did this.”
