    Summary

In the course of her adventures, Bilbo finds herself pregnant. Without an offer of marriage from Thorin, she returns to the Shire to raise the child with the help of her family.

The King Under the Mountain is heartbroken that Bilbo chooses to leave Erebor, but he cannot blame her. Not after he tried to kill her. There was a time when she would have proposed marriage, but that time is clearly past. If all he can have of her are her letters, then he will be grateful for the missives.

Getting these two to talk just might take divine intervention. Or the intervention of a particularly interested child.

Bilbo leaves Erebor without knowing she is pregnant, Thorin lets her leave because he believes he is unworthy. Thorin writes to her regularly and she tells him about her Acorn even once sending a drawing of a baby. Thorin never realizes that she is talking about a child, his child. She mentions a childs antics and Thorin assumes its a neighbors. Acorn and her mother are shunnd by the Baggins in Hobbiton except Lobelia who only comes to tea to be nasty. Acorn is an interesting mix of hobbit and dwarf which her mother tells her without telling her fathers identity; Acorn assumes she met him on her adventure and he died. Acorn wants a party for her birthday so Bilbo makes arrangements in Buckland inviting the Took and Brandybuck relatives. Acorn has fun playing with her friend Asphodel and the other faunts, the party last through many meals and much gift-giving. Suddenly there is a fire set by men and orcs as a distraction to kidnap hobbits, many are killed or injured including Bilbo protecting her daughter. Bilbo wakes a day later saved from the arrows by her mithril armor to find her child among the hundred or so taken. Bilbo scrawls a note to Thorin which is given to the raven who arrived to deliver her monthly letter, she sends word to others in the Shire but can't wait for them. Bilbo makes good time leaving arrows and messages along the way dealing with the dark spirits of the Old Forest who try to kill her and the River spirit who grants her passage.

Bilbo follows a light to find injured rangers at a campfire and Legolas too. The rangers saw the captives and tried to help but missed the second batch of orcs leading to injuries. Strider and Legolas accompany her and they catch up to the captives camped on one side of a derelict bridge. Acorn and the others ride in cages on wagons receiving little food. The leader Bill tells them that Saruman needs them for experiments; he wants to breed something new and powerful that won't fear the sun as orcs do. He heard a rumor about a true halfling and ordered his men to capture it, Acorn tries to deal with Bill but only outs herself earning extra food to retain some health. Bilbo's rescue attempt fails and a creature in the river collapses the bridge before she can follow the wagons. Thorin received Bilbo's plea and mustered five hundred dwarves to move in her direction, Balin is the one who works out that she has a child, the Acorn Thorin overlooked. The Company knew how close Bilbo and Thorin had become on the quest but did not judge though dwarves do not indulge with any but their One.

Thorin is aided by Galadriel and her elves, she requests that he free Gandalf and kill Saruman to prevent the grey wizard having the burden. Bilbo arrives at just behind the captives and is ensnared by Saruman's voice, he brings her inside just as Thorin arrives. Saruman discovers she has the Ring and takes it torturing her while the dwarves batter their way in. Severely wounded herself, Bilbo wounds Saruman and Thorin finishes it rushing her to the healers. Dwalin protected Acorn becoming her idol. The Company presents her with overdue gifts a trunk of dresses, a circlet of the Durin family, books and toys. Primrose disapproves of Thorin for not marrying Bilbo as Dwalin gives Acorn her first axe lessons. The hobbit reinforcements arrive as escort while Bilbo agrees to go to Erebor. Bilbo mostly recovers by the time they reach Dale. In Erebor Dis takes her to her quarters designed to resemble Bag End, Bilbo is annoyed to find Acorn's room a hastily refinished study. Bilbo initially prevents much bonding between Thorin and Acorn but relents.

Acorn's friend Guntur, Bombur's son joins them in the forge and finds his calling. Bilbo puts Acorn to bed and her talk w/ Thorin ends in the bedroom and later an honest discussion. Unfortunately a misunderstanding about birth control separates them until Acorn and her accomplices work their magic, Dis gets a prominent dam to offer Thorin marriage to spur Bilbo. Acorn suggests marriage and Bilbo realizes Thorin was waiting for her to ask as is custom, he realizes that she did ask long ago. Forty years later Thorin abdicates to Acorn and travels with Bilbo to the Shire to see their son Thrain and his newest child. Acorn joins the guards sent to rescue Guntar from raiders.
