Chapter Text
Two weeks. Two weeks since it happened. You didn't go straight home that night. Instead, you went to the tree you've known forever. The tree on top of the hill. The willow tree. You sat on the trunk of the tree, hugging your legs, crying as the light of dusk shone through the buildings on the horizon. You lifted your head slowly and looked at your hands. What was happening to you?
*
What happened that day was probably the best and worst of things that could of happened. You got home that night around 7 pm. Your father heard you come through the door and rushed to you, scolding you lightly, while giving you the most comforting hug. He had asked what was wrong, and when you didn't answer, he didn't say anything. You had told him you didn't want to go to school the next day. He told you not to worry because you were moving. It was the best thing you heard all day. Your sister overheard and yelled, "What?!" You couldn't help but snicker at her reaction.
*
Now you were in the moving truck on your way to your new home, remembering the day from two weeks ago. When you had told your one and only friend you were moving, she couldn't help but cry as she hugged you. You told her you would keep in touch and she could come visit you since you were only moving 30 minutes away. She had asked you if you were okay with missing your graduation. You said you couldn't be happier to get away from those people. Your sister hadn't taken the news as well as you. The night she had overheard you and your father, she argued with him for an hour. He was being as quiet as ever, being as kind as he was until she calmed down and excepted it, muttering something about how her friends at school weren’t real.
Apparently, the reason you were moving was because your father's girlfriend and he had decided on moving in with each other. And that meant moving downtown. You always did love how the city looked at night, so it was no problem for you, and your sister was ecstatic about it, jabbering about all the shops and places she would visit each day. You saw your father smile as you and your sister continued to talk about your new life.
The building you pulled up to looked way bigger than your last place. Your old building only had two floors and everyone knew everyone. This one had 8 floors and looked more modern.
"Welcome to your new home, girls."
You looked up at your surroundings with awe and excitement. You had always loved downtown Toronto, for how many people it had, its liveliness, its lights. But most importantly, to be in a place this big, it made you think how no one who witnessed the Incident would be able to point you out.
"Come on, we can go sightseeing later, okay?" Your father's voice toke you from your thoughts.
"Y-yeah. Coming, Dad."
You stepped out of the truck and followed your family into the building.
"Richard!" The high-pitched sound of her voice made you cringe.
"Oh, hi Kathrine. Woah!"
Your father almost fell due to her jumping at him. She started kissing him all over his face.
"Kat, not in front of the girls." She playfully rolled her eyes, still not taking her arms from around his neck.
"Girls, come say hi to Kat."
You sighed and walked over to them. "Hey," you said quietly.
"Rylann," your father pestered. She gave a quick wave, not looking up from her phone.
"Yeah, hi," Kathrine said quickly and turned her attention back to your father. "So, Richie..."
You couldn't stand hearing her mushy talk. "Uh, Dad? I'm gonna get to rest of the boxes."
"Okay, hurry though. We're gonna go out after." He said as you walked out the door, almost missing the glare that you got from Kathrine.
You were halfway to the elevator when you heard someone run next to you. "Hey. Couldn't stand her either?" Rylann asked.
"Yeah." You said, tucking some loose hair behind your ear.
You and your sister had a mutual disliking for Kathrine. When you had first met her she acted remotely nice, but the more you spent time with her, the more you realized she treated you differently than your father. She would act so lovey-dovey around him, while she either only spoke a few words or completely ignored you and your sister. It annoyed the hell out of you, but you choose to ignore her.
*
"I got the last box, okay?" Rylann called out from the truck.
"Okay," You replied.
You and Rylann had finished bringing up the small boxes to the apartment, leaving the big things for tomorrow. Your father couldn't help because Kathrine insisted that they spend some 'quality time' together, even though he tried to convince her. Sometimes your father's kindness turned him into a doormat.
A loud thud brought you form your thoughts. Turning your attention to the noise, you saw Rylann had dropped the box she was carrying on the road and was currently on the ground.
"Damnit." She cursed. "Hope nothing breakable was in there."
As she slowly got up, you saw a speeding car heading toward her. You ran from the entrance of the building as fast as you could to her. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. Rylann turned around to see the car, the driver not paying attention. You ran, putting your hand out as if you could stop it.
Suddenly, a teal light came from your hand, in a wave-like manner. It pushed the car into the other lane, missing Rylann. The car skidded, but the driver kept driving, them not even sure how they missed the girl they were about to hit mere seconds ago.
You made it to Rylann and held her tight, putting your chin on her head since she was slightly shorter. She hugged you back.
"Did...did that just happen? Did I...almost...get hit by a car?" You could hear the fear in her voice.
"Y-yeah," you said, shakily.
You moved your head and looked at your hands. What was happening to you?
*
You never did tell your dad Rylann almost got hit by a car. And you never told your sister how the miracle she never got hit was because of you. It had been a month since then. Nothing out of the ordinary happen. No until one night...
You were laying on your bed, fidgeting with the necklace you've had since forever. Apparently, when your father adopted you, you already had it on, and when your father asked them about it, they said you had been dropped at their door so they didn't know. So he let you wear the necklace your whole life.
As you played with it, you got a good look at it. The chain looked silver. Connected to it was a small gem, coloured teal with swirls of purple that shined if in the right light. You thought it looked beautiful, but you were sad to not know its origins.
As you thought about it, you noticed the necklace was glowing as you held it. You sat up on your bed, examining it. Then a teal coloured stream (of magic?) came from the necklace and swirled around you.
"Uh, what's happening." You asked yourself as you stood up.
The swirling finished but the necklace still glowed.
You looked around your room with caution. "Ha ha, funny prank Rylann. You got me." You said to the emptiness. You then realized Rylann was out and sighed.
"if it wasn't her then were-." Your eyes stopped at the full-length mirror beside you. In it, you saw the most beautiful pair of wings. They were transparent, but you could still see them because the details of them shone a bright lilac. They also reminded you of butterfly wings.
You gasped lightly, then slowly walked closer to the mirror. For a few seconds you just stared in awe and finally, you tried to touch them. They felt like flower pelts mixed with the actual feeling of butterfly wings. You turned to look at your back and gasped again. The wings weren’t even attached to you, they were floating.
You wondered how they worked. You wondered... if you could fly. You thought about it for a minute, then remembered something from Sword Art Online that could help. " something about imagining you have virtual bones." You thought out loud. So, you did.
Your wings moved slightly. You made some kind of gaspy laugh at the accomplishment.
You focused on trying to get them to move back and forth, imagining the wings were attached. They slowly moved and you stared in awe. Then you tried to move them faster. Faster...harder... You started to hover.
You quickly stopped moving them and dropped to turn around and face the mirror. You had the biggest smile on your face as memories of watching Tinkerbell movies came back to you. How when you and Rylann were little and watched the movies. How you wished you could fly. And well, that wish came true.
"Hey, you home?" Rylann's voice made you jump. You were so distracted you didn't hear her open the door.
"U-uh, yeah. I'm in my room." You said trying not to sound frantic as you tried to get rid of the wings sparkling on your back.
You heard Rylann take off her shoes and put her bag down. "Where are Dad and Kathrine?" She asked from where you guessed was the kitchen.
"Uh, they went out to dinner."
"Good. Then we can continue our game without her bothering us."
You gave a nervous laugh to reply. "How about you turn on the PS4 and get snacks. I gotta go to the bathroom."
"Okay, but hurry. I feel too pumped up to wait." She said.
You stuck your head out your door to see if Rylann was there. You didn't see her in the hallway so you rushed to the bathroom and slammed the door shut. You pushed yourself against the bathroom door, breathing rapidly, eyes scanning your surroundings. You looked at the mirror to see your wings were still there, shining because of the light above the mirror. You let out a groan and placed your hands on your face, letting them slide down to the sink counter.
"How the fuck am I supposed to get rid of these things." You said quietly, with a growl.
You then spotted the glowing teal necklace, dangling from your neck. Hmmm, you thought. You held the necklace in your hand, observing it and thinking how to shut it off.
Three loud knocks startled you, making you let go of the necklace.
"Will you hurry up already? Jeez." Rylann shouted through the door. "And don't tell me its 'cuz of your period."
Shit.
Now you were panicking. Rylann always opened the door if you toke to long (she's really impatient). The door didn't have a lock on it so you were screwed. You toke the necklace in your hand again, thinking again about its origins. Then again a teal (magic?) stream came out from it, this time forming a clear substance merely a centimetre from your eyes, and it hardened suddenly.
You focused your eyes and looked at the mirror seeing the hardened clear substance in front of your face was mirrored and in the shape of butterfly wings. You slowly lifted your hand and went to touch the pointed end of the mask (face cover, face glasses?) when Rylann shouted through the door again, startling you and making you prick your finger on the face glasses.
Fuck! You thought as you heard Rylann saying," Oh my god, hurry up! If you're not out soon, I'm coming in."
You quickly stuck your injured finger in your mouth cursing again and groaned from pain.
"You okay in there?" Rylann asked, sounding genuinely concerned and not sarcastic (for once).
"Y-yeah. I'm Fine." You said with your finger still in your mouth.
The cut felt like the worst paper cut in the world, a cut not even that deep but hurt like a mother fucker.
"You don't sound fine." Rylann said sounding a bit humoured.
"I'm fine, fuck off." You said, sounding colder than you expected.
"Mate," you heard her say snickering. You rolled your eyes but couldn't help but laugh. Let's just say you watch Once Upon A Time for a while and had a really big crush on a certain pirate captain named Killian Jones.
You knew she heard you laughing because she then said, "I'm still coming in though."
"Can you be patient for once?" You asked.
"Nope." She replied nonchalantly. "I'm opening the door."
You quickly moved in front of the door and blocked it, sighing.
"Hey!" You heard her yell. "Ugh! I'm getting something to unblock the door. You better be done when I open it."
You heard her stomp off to who knows where. You sighed out loud as you slide down the door, looking at the glowing necklace through your face mask. You sat there for a few moments, your mind racing about what was going on.
A bump on the door toke you from your thoughts. Another bump opened the door slightly, causing a loud slam went it went back to place by your weight on it.
"What are you doing?" You asked.
"Trying," bump. "To get," bump. "The door," bump. "Open!" Rylann shouted.
The final bump opened the door the farthest.
Fuck, I need to get rid of these things quick!
You thought about how you made them appear in the first place. You held necklace in your hand and thought about how you didn't know where it came from, how you didn't know where you came from. The light from the necklace slowly dimmed as your mask disappeared.
You stood up quickly with your foot still in front of the door, it blocking Rylann, and looked in the mirror. The wings were gone! As soon as they disappeared completely, Rylann came rushing through the door with a pillow in her hands and crashed into the sink, the pillow cushioning her crash. You in relief as she lifted her head from the pillow.
"A pillow is what you use to unblock the door?" You said smiling.
"Well it worked, didn't it?" She replied.
You rolled your eyes playfully and walked out the door, Rylann following. You both sat down on the couch, a controller in your hands.
"You ready?" You asked looking at her.
"Oh. You're gonna get your ass kicked." She said, eyes on the TV.
"Oh, you're on!" You turned your eyes to the tv. You're definitely on.
*
"Oh, come on!" Rylann shouted, standing up in rage and throwing the controller on the couch.
You just laughed as she sat back down making a pouty face. "Y-you look like Grumpy Cat." You said, stammering because of your laughter.
"Shut up." She grumbled.
"Oh, come on. Just because I'm better than you, doesn't mean you have to be a baby about it." You said, still laughing.
She just scoffed and said, "Whatever."
You were still giggling when the door opened and your father and Kathrine came in, looking tired.
Your father yawned as he said, "Hi girls."
"Hey," you and Rylann said at the same time.
Kathrine just ignored you, as if she didn't see you at all.
"Me and Kat are going to bed. Don't stay up too late, okay?"
"'Kay," you said, and Rylann nodded.
He and Kathrine disappeared down the hall, her supporting him as he walked.
"Someone's drunk off their ass." Rylann whispered, sitting back on the couch. You snickered.
A few hours later, it was 3:30 am. Rylann was fast asleep on the couch as you watched Netflix. Your attention had drifted to the necklace that had supposedly give you wings. Fucking wings. You were still weirded out by it, but your curiosity got the best of you. You got up from the couch, turned everything off and went into your room, closing the door.
As you sat on your bed, you wondered if the Incident had anything to with the wings, or what happened with Rylann. The teal looking stuff that came out of your hands looked similar to the stuff that came from the necklace. Maybe it could happen again if you thought about the Incident or Rylann. So, you did.
*
"Why do you think he did it though?"
"I don't know." You said shrugging. "He's definitely crazy. He literally sent aliens to attack New York!"
"Wouldn't it be so cool if there was an alien attack here?" Paige said, gushing.
"It would be, but it be scary as shit. I mean, how would you feel if everything you knew and loved was destroyed by aliens?"
"I dunno." Paige shrugged.
"But you just- you just said.... ugh." You groaned, rolling your eyes at her.
You unlocked your locker, getting your things for your next class, as Paige continued to talked about the Invasion of New York.
"Ugh, nerds." Someone scoffed behind you.
You turned to see Amanda and her fleet of bitches. You sighed, turning around and ignoring her.
Amanda was your classic mean girl with her puppy dog followers and everything. Every girl wanted to be her and every guy wanted to...befriend her...in a way. The most popular girl in the 8th grade.
You didn't know what compelled her to do it (maybe because you were ignoring her) when she pushed you lightly, but you just turned your head over your shoulder and glared at her. You saw her smiling the smuggest smile when you did, but again you ignored her. You guessed she wasn't satisfied with you just glaring at her when she yanked you back by the necklace you'd been wearing forever. The chain snapped and the necklace ended up in her hands.
Your hand went to your neck and your eyes widened. You turned around, your face filled with rage.
"Give it back. Now." You said through gritted teeth.
"If you want it so badly then come and get it." Amanda teased, dangling the necklace near your face.
You tried to snatch it but before you could she threw it backwards into the hands of one of her minions. You bolted to them, but they just threw it to another minion. You darted to them but they threw it back to Amanda. They kept at it for a minute. It was like the cruellest game of monkey in the middle. You felt like you were gonna cry. Amanda noticed.
"Look! She's gonna cry! Go on and cry little bitch!"
Bitch?! How dare she call you a bitch. She was being a bitch. You felt the anger bubbling inside you. You wanted to yell at her. You wanted to curse at her. You wanted to smack that bitchy face of hers right off! So, you did. Well, you tried.
You raised your hand and swung, but instead of it hitting her, it released a wave of teal that made her fly back five meters, with everyone behind her falling down or flying back as well. You gasped and looked down at your hand. Did you do that?
"W-w-what the fuck, you freak?!" You heard Amanda yell. You jerked your head up and saw Amanda running toward the main office, her puppy dogs following. The people around you began to talk.
"What the fuck was that?!"
"What did that freak do?!"
"I hope Amanda's okay!"
"She like a monster!"
"My god, she is a monster!"
You didn't realize you were crying when you ran out the doors of the school. You heard Paige calling your name but couldn't help but ignore it as you ran. Paige had called you a week later after the Incident, telling you how after Amanda went to the principle and told him what happened, he called your father but luckily, he didn't pick up. She told you that the cops came but they didn't believe what they were being told. How a girl pushed someone back five meters not even touching her. The teacher didn't believe it either so all the adults thought the children were just imagining things. You remembered the night you went home, you unplugged all the phone and disabled calls on your father's cell phone. You remember crying on top of the hill, thinking about it...what was happening to you?
*
You sighed as you thought about it. You thought about just balling up your anger and throw it out the window. You opened your eyes slowly, and when you noticed the teal glow on your hand your eyes widened and examined your hand. In your hand was a small glowing sphere of teal. You let out s shakes breath. You didn't literally mean throw a ball of your anger away! Wait. You thought about the ball and it appeared...huh.
You poked the glowing ball, it lite up when you did, causing you to shriek and drop it. But before it hit the ground it...disappeared. You looked down at the floor confused. Where did it go? After standing still for a moment and bringing your thoughts together, you tried to think of the ball again, and just like last time it appeared in your hand. Huh...
You poked it. It lite up. This time you didn't drop it. You juggled it in between your hands, it glowing bright when it touched. A sudden noise from outside your door caused you to drop the ball and turn your head and hand to face the door. What you didn't expect was a quick beam of teal light coming from your hand. It hit the door making it close. You quickly retracted your hand. You saw a sleepy looking Rylann open the door.
"You Okay?" She asked.
"Yeah, I'm just going to bed." You said smiling nervously.
She didn't seem to notice in her sleepy state. "I'm going to bed. G'night." She said, walking away.
"Night." You replied.
As she disappeared from your view, you hurried to close the door. You sighed but sucked in a breath when you noticed there was black residue right where that beam of light hit your door. It looked burnt. You looked at your hands. What was happening to you? You didn't know for sure but you were sure as hell that it was going to be fucking awesome!
