Chapter Text

Everyone except for Quasimodo and the Gargoyles leave. Quasimodo rings the bells.

Quasimodo: Oh Marie! You’re in very good voice today! Jacqueline, we need to fix your clapper! C’mon, Gabriel! Pour your flood of sound into the square! Oh, it’s a holiday! Sing, my bells! Sing till you are all quite out of breath! The sound of birds are heard in the distance. He stops ringing the bells and goes to the birds. Ah, morning, my little birdies.

The Gargoyles are members of the Congregation , but have small chimes and bells that they ring when they speak.

Gargoyle: Don’t you wish you could be like those birds and just fly away?

Quasimodo: Ooh, me? No. No!

Gargoyle: But how beautiful it must be out there!

Quasimodo: Ah, no. No. Not for me.

Gargoyles: Why not?

Quasimodo: It’s too dangerous!

Gargoyle: The boy is right. Don’t encourage him!

Gargoyles: Why shouldn’t we?

Congregation: For Quasimodo, the cathedral was not only his home, but his universe. It was people with figures of marble; with kings and saints, monsters and demons. The saints blessed him, and the monsters protected him!

Quasimodo: Today…is the Feast of Fools!

Gargoyles: Yeah! Yay!

Gargoyle: Quasimodo, why don’t you try going down there?

Quasimodo: You know I’ve never gone outside.

Gargoyle: You can leave anytime you want!

Gargoyle: Master won’t allow it!

Quasimodo: No, last year, he said: “Someday, maybe.”.

Gargoyle: He always says “Someday.” Never today!

Gargoyle: Besides, you shouldn’t have to ask for permission to go outside! Just put one foot in front of the other!

Gargoyles: And sneak out!

Quasimodo: I can’t!

Frollo enters carrying a basket with two cups and bread.

Frollo: Quasimodo? He taps Quasimodo on the shoulder.Good morning, Quasimodo.

Quasimodo, at the sight of his master, he scrunches up, and looks up toward Frollo: Morning, master.

Frollo: Were you talking to someone?

Quasimodo: No! Just… my friends.

Frollo, tapping one of the Gargoyles on the head : Mhm, your friends. And what are your friends made of?

Quasimodo , dejectedly : Stone.

Frollo: And can stone talk back?

Quasimodo: No.

Frollo: That’s right. What kind of conversation is that? It takes two people to communicate, my boy. And who is that other person for you?

Quasimodo: You. You, Master.

Frollo: Right, again. He presents bread and wine to Quasimodo . Corpus christi, the body of Christ

Quasimodo: Amen.

Frollo: Sanctus christi, the blood of Christ.

Quasimodo: Amen.

Frollo: In nominee patri, fill et spiritu sancta. In the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit. I brought you a special treat today. Strawberry? Quasimodo goes to grab one from him. Ah! Ah! He smacks Quasimodo away. Self-control, Quasimodo. It’s important to master the art. Quasimodo tentatively takes the strawberry and puts it in his mouth. And of manners, too!

Quasimodo , spits it out : Thank you, master. Frollo gestures to him that it is okay to eat it. He immediately devours it.

Frollo: Now shall we tell today’s story?

Quasimodo: Yes! Yes!

Frollo: Stories from our home’s beautiful statues! And we were up to…?

Quasimodo: Flight into Egypt!

Frollo: That’s right. What do you remember about that story?

Quasimodo: …Joseph fled into Egypt.

Frollo: Yes, he did. With his wife, Mary, and…?

Quasimodo: Baby Jesus!

Frollo: That’s right now, who hid them? Who protected them?

Quasimodo , stumbling through the na me : Saint Aphro- He keeps trying to pronounce the name.

Frollo , laughs, but speaks clearly : Aphrodisius. Saint Aphrodisius. As I have hidden and protected you. Nearby horns are heard. Oh, ugh. Well I suppose I must stop stalling. He goes to look down upon the square in disgust. Look at them down there, like horrible vermin! Scuttling about. And all to see the g*psies sing and dance.

Quasimodo: You told me they were not allowed to sing, dance.

Frollo: They aren’t except on this one day: The Feast of Fools.

Quasimodo: Feast of Fools.

Frollo: It’ll be the last time if I have anything to say about it.

Quasimodo: Last time?

Frollo: I petitioned the king to stop next year’s festival.

Quasimodo: But then, I can never go.

Frollo: Why our king allows the g*psies here in the first place is beyond me.

THROUGH BORDERS POROUS AS A SIEVE

WE LET THEM COME

AND LET THEM LIVE

IT’S ALMOST AS IF THEY WERE GIVEN

SANCTUARY

HOW IT FILLS ME WITH DISGUST

TO WALK AMONGST THEM

YET I MUST

I LOATH TO LEAVE YOU

AND OUR TRUSTY

SANCTUARY

Quasimodo: What if I came with you? I’m strong, I could protect you.

Frollo: You protect me?

Quasimodo: Like Saint Aphro- He tries to pronounce it again.

Frollo, laughing : Aphrodisius. I’m sorry, my boy. I don't mean to laugh at you. But the truth is, that’s what others will do. And worse.

THE WORLD IS CRUEL

THE WORLD IS WICKED

IT'S I ALONE WHOM YOU CAN TRUST IN THIS WHOLE CITY

I AM YOUR ONLY FRIEND

I WHO KEEP YOU, TEACH YOU, FEED YOU, DRESS YOU

I WHO LOOK UPON YOU WITHOUT FEAR

HOW CAN I PROTECT YOU, BOY, UNLESS YOU

ALWAYS STAY IN HERE

AWAY IN HERE

Remember what I taught you, Quasimodo

YOU ARE DEFORMED

Quasimodo: I AM DEFORMED

Frollo: AND YOU ARE UGLY

Quasimodo: AND I AM UGLY

Frollo: AND THESE ARE CRIMES

FOR WHICH THE WORLD

SHOWS LITTLE PITY

YOU DO NOT COMPREHEND

Quasimodo: YOU ARE MY ONE DEFENDER

Frollo: OUT THERE THEY'LL REVILE YOU

AS A MONSTER

Quasimodo: I AM A MONSTER

Frollo: OUT THERE THEY WILL HATE

AND SCORN AND JEER

Quasimodo: ONLY A MONSTER

Frollo: WHY INVITE THEIR CALUMNY

AND CONSTERNATION?

STAY IN HERE

BE FAITHFUL TO ME

Quasimodo: I'M FAITHFUL

Frollo: GRATEFUL TO ME

Quasimodo: I'M GRATEFUL

Frollo: DO AS I SAY

OBEY

AND STAY

IN HERE

Quasimodo: I'LL STAY

IN HERE

Frollo: Remember what I taught you, Quasimodo, this is your sanctuary. He exits.

Quasimodo: My sanctuary…

SAFE BEHIND THESE WINDOWS AND THESE PARAPETS OF STONE

GAZING AT THE PEOPLE DOWN BELOW ME

ALL MY LIFE I WATCH THEM AS I HIDE UP HERE ALONE

HUNGRY FOR THE HISTORIES THEY SHOW ME

ALL MY LIFE I MEMORIZE THEIR FACES

KNOWING THEM AS THEY WILL NEVER KNOW ME

ALL MY LIFE I WONDER HOW IT FEELS TO PASS A DAY

NOT ABOVE THEM

BUT PART OF THEM

AND OUT THERE

LIVING IN THE SUN

GIVE ME ONE DAY OUT THERE

ALL I ASK IS ONE

TO HOLD FOREVER

OUT THERE

WHERE THEY ALL LIVE UNAWARE

WHAT I'D GIVE

WHAT I'D DARE

JUST TO LIVE ONE DAY OUT THERE

OUT THERE AMONG THE MILLERS AND THE WEAVERS AND THEIR WIVES

THROUGH THE ROOFS AND GABLES I CAN SEE THEM

EV'RY DAY THEY SHOUT AND SCOLD AND GO ABOUT THEIR LIVES

HEEDLESS OF THE GIFT IT IS TO BE THEM

IF I WAS IN THEIR SKIN

I'D TREASURE EV'RY INSTANT

OUT THERE

STROLLING BY THE SEINE

TASTE A MORNING OUT THERE

LIKE ORDINARY MEN

WHO FREELY WALK ABOUT THERE

JUST ONE DAY AND THEN

I SWEAR I'LL BE CONTENT

WITH MY SHARE

WON'T RESENT

WON'T DESPAIR

OLD AND BENT

I WON'T CARE

I'LL HAVE SPENT

ONE DAY

OUT THERE

The crowd dances. Quasimodo joins in. Phoebus enters. He stands tall and with confidence.

Phoebus: Into this crowd strode a young cavalier.

Celesse  enters, she acts as the comedic relief for the time being.

Celesse, striking a heroic pose: And his page, Celesse Perrot!

Phoebus: Captain Phoebus de Martan, at your service. Ladies surround him.

Celesse, dancing around him, pretending to swoon: Whose dashing manner and bold swagger- She suddenly is serious. -could not quite conceal the haunted look in his eyes.

Phoebus: New to Paris, just back from the front.

Celesse, pretending to swoon on him: One of those handsome fellows to whom all the girls take a liking.

Chapter Text

Phoebus , laughing at Celesse and pushing her up. : Thank you, ladies. Might one of you mind showing me around?

Lady: Oh captain, we’re not those types of girls.

Phoebus: I like all types of girls.

Celesse runs back onstage being chased by a Noble . Pheobus grabs her. Celesse looks up at him with a shocked smile, she is holding something in her hand.

Noble: Come back here!

Phoebus: What’s the rush, Celesse? I let you run off for a second and this is what happens?

Celesse: Well, you know. Once a beggar and thief, always a beggar and thief.

Phoebus: I take you off the streets and give you a job and this is what you do in return?

Frollo enters and walks up to Pheobus .

Frollo: My goodness, what is going on here?

Phoebus: Beg your pardon, your grace?

Noble: That bitch stole from me!

Frollo , turning to Celesse : You know stealing is a sin, don’t you?

Celesse , laughing awkwardly : Yes, your grace.

Phoebus: Please, your grace, forgive her. This is Celesse, my page. She is quite troubled. He takes the pouch from Celesse’s hands and gives it to the Noble who grumpily walks away.

Frollo: And who are you?

Phoebus: Captain Phoebus de Martan, you summoned me.

Frollo: Ah! Captain, welcome to the Cathedral Guard.

Phoebus: We’re grateful for the opportunity to serve you, my Lord

Frollo: Your early arrival is most auspicious. The pestilence of these g*psies grows more dangerous every day.

Townspeople: TOPSY TURVY

Esmeralda: Oh...wouldn't you like to be crowned King for a day?

Townspeople: TOPSY TURVY

Esmeralda: Why not take advantage of what you've got? She takes Quasimodo up on the stage. The Townspeople gasps. Frollo stands up in shock.

Townsperson: My God, he's hideous!

Townsperson: Is that a mask?

Townsperson: It's his face!

Townsperson: He's the devil!

Townsperson: Impossible!

Townsperson: You're cursed!

Townsperson: Who is that?

Townsperson: It’s the bell ringer of Notre Dame!

Clopin, standing in front of Quasimodo: Ladies and gentlemen, don’t panic! We're in luck. We asked for the ugliest face in Paris, and we've found him, eh? Quasimodo - the Hunchback of Notre Dame!

Chapter Text

Townsperson, carrying a tomato: You think he’s ugly now? Watch this! He throws the tomato at Quasimodo. The Townspeople stares in shock. He laughs. Now that’s ugly!

Townsperson, laughing: Hail to the king. He throws food at Quasimodo.

The Townspeople starts laughing.

Townsperson: Long live the king! He throws food at Quasimodo.

Townsperson: Bon appetite. He throws food at Quasimodo.

Congregant: The crowd had never done this before.

Congregant: Not in all the years of the Feast of Fools-

Congregant: But they had never seen a creature so horrible!

Congregant: And it drove them wild!

The Townspeople surround Quasimodo. They hit him on the head and tear off his cloak. They begin dunking his head in a barrel of water. Frollo turns away so he doesn’t have to watch.

Celesse: Phoebus, stop them!

Townsperson: Tie him down!

Celesse: Phoebus!

The Townspeople grab ropes and attempt to tie down Quasimodo.

Quasimodo: Master, help me!

Phoebus: Permission to stop this cruelty, your grace.

Frollo: Not just yet, captain, A lesson needs to be learned here.

As soon as Frollo finishes speaking the crowd goes silent. Esmeralda slowly walks up the stairs to Quasimodo

Esmeralda, gently and wiping away the food: Don't be afraid. I'm sorry. This wasn't supposed to happen, none of this was supposed to happen.

Frollo, pointing at Esmeralda: You! G*psy girl! Get down at once!

Esmeralda: Yes, your honor. Just as soon as I free this poor boy.

Frollo: I forbid it! Esmeralda whips out a knife and cuts the ropes holding Quasimodo. How dare you defy me!

Esmeralda, standing up and yelling at Frollo: You mistreat this poor boy the same way you mistreat my people. You speak of justice, yet you are cruel to those most in need of your help.

Frollo: Silence!

Esmeralda, raising her fist: Justice!

Frollo: Mark my words, g*psy. You will pay for this insolence.

Esmeralda: Then it appears we've crowned the wrong fool. The only fool I see is you!

Frollo: Captain Phoebus! Arrest her.

Phoebus motions for his Soldiers to move in and arrest Esmeralda. They surround the stage

Esmeralda: Now, let's see. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten of you, and one of me. What's a poor girl to do? She takes out a tissue and begins to fake cry, but suddenly she kicks the barrels over and into the Soldiers before jumping offstage.

Celesse kicks over a pole holding up a canopy which falls on the Soldiers. Esmeralda, Clopin, and the other Romanis escape off stage.

Chapter Text

Townsperson, seeing Quasimodo: There he is! Get him!

The Townspeople rush at Quasimodo.

Frollo: Stop this at once! The Townspeople stop. We must show kindness to this…creature! As our savior did when he healed the Lepers. Time to go home. The performance is over!

Phoebus, shouting at the Townspeople: He said to go!

The Townspeople disperses. They hiss and spit at Quasimodo, who goes to his master. Frollo backs away.

Frollo: SEE HOW IT'S CRUEL

SEE HOW IT'S WICKED

SEE HOW I'VE SHELTERED YOU

FROM HAVING TO GO THROUGH THIS

HOW COULD YOU DO THIS

TO ME

Quasimodo: Forgive, Master...won't ever leave again...

Frollo: NOW, BOY YOU SEE

YOU DON'T BELONG WITH NORMAL MEN

YOU ARE HAPPY WHEN

YOU'RE IN YOUR SANCTUARY

Quasimodo: SANCTUARY

Frollo: BACK TO YOUR SANCTUARY

Frollo and Quasimodo: NEVER TO COME OUT HERE

Frollo: Again. Take the boy inside.

Phoebus goes to grab Quasimodo’s arm, who pushes him away and enters the cathedral. Frollo sees Esmeralda's scarf laying on the ground. He picks it up and exits the stage.

Congregant: SO THE POOR HUNCHBACK

RETREATED BACK IN THROUGH THE

DOORS OF NOTRE DAME

Esmeralda re-enters and looks around in awe at Notre Dame.

Congregant: AND THERE FOLLOWED THE ROMANI GIRL

WHO'D NEVER BEEN THROUGH THE

DOORS OF NOTRE DAME

Celesse, hiding behind a pillar: AND SHE STOPPED AND BEHELD ALL THE BEAU

LIKE A BEGGAR RECEIVING AN ALMS

AND EACH WINDOW AND PILLAR

AND ARCH SEEMED TO FILL HER

WITH LIGHT

Esmeralda: THE LIGHT OF NOTRE DAME

Celesse creeps forward. Esmeralda   hears her and turns around, grabbing the knife in her belt and holding it to her neck.

Celesse, shyly: Hi?

Esmeralda, laughing: So I dance with you and give you a doll and this is how you repay me? Who are you?

Celesse: My n-name is Ce-Celesse Perrott. I’m- I’m Captain Phoebus de Martan’s page. She sees Pheobu sneaking up behind Esmeralda.

Esmeralda: What do you want, Celesse Perrott?

Celesse: To apologize.

Esmeralda: For what?

Pheobus, disarming Esmeralda and holding the knife to her: For that.

Esmeralda: You sneaky sons of-

Celesse: Ah, ah, ah! Watch it. We’re in a church.

Esmeralda, picking up a staff with candles on it: Are you always this charming or am I just lucky? She swings at Phoebuswho uses his sword to block her.

Pheobus, between Esmeralda's swings: Candlelight… privacy… music. Can't think of a better place for hand-to-hand combat! You fight almost as well as a man!

Celesse: I bet she was going to say the same about you!

Phoebus, distracted: That’s hitting a little below the belt, Celesse

Esmeralda: No, this is. She swings one end of the staff at Phoebus' crotch. Phoebusblocks it with his sword. She quickly hits Phoebusin the face with the other end of the staff.

Phoebus, shaking it off: Touche! Esmeralda hits him again in the stomach. Ok, ok! You win, put down the candles. Permit me. I'm Phoebus. It means "sun god." And you are?

Esmeralda: Is this an interrogation?

Phoebus: It's called an introduction.

Esmeralda: You're not arresting me?

Phoebus: Not as long as you're in here. I can't.

Esmeralda: You're not at all like the other soldiers.

Phoebus: Thank you.

Esmeralda: So, if you're not going to arrest me, what do you want?

Phoebus: I'd settle for your name.

Esmeralda: Esmeralda.

Phoebus: It's beautiful. Much better than Phoebus, anyway.

Esmeralda and Phoebus look into each other’s eyes. Celesse stands there awkwardly, whistling and twiddling her thumbs. They don’t notice Frollo entering and approaching.

Frollo: So a g*psy dares to enter this holy place?

Esmeralda: Why not?

Frollo: Because your kind is not allowed here!

Esmeralda: Why do you hate us so much? What did we ever do to you?

Frollo, ignoring her : Captain, take your page and leave.

Celesse: If you don’t mind me, I’m going to go pray.

Frollo: You will leave.

Celesse: Forgive me, your grace. But I, an avid sinner, must go and pay my respect to God. As the archdeacon, I’d think you’d be happy that I was praying, especially after what you caught me doing today.

Frollo, give Celesse a long glare before speaking: Fine. Captain, stay close by, in case I need you.

Phoebus: Of course, your grace. To Celesse . Don’t cause trouble.

Phoebus and Celesse exit opposite ways.

Chapter Text

Frollo: What are you doing here?

Esmeralda: I came here to find that boy. It was my fault he was up on the stage in the first place.

Frollo: The boy doesn’t need your help. He’s my charge. God loves even a monster.

Esmeralda: He’s no less human than the rest of us.

Frollo: Some of us are less human. In the moral sense.

Esmeralda, knowingly: Do you mean me?

Frollo: All of your kind are without shame or modesty.

Esmeralda, angrily: My kind? She takes a deep breath and says in a calmer tone. Your grace, there must be some charity inside you. If you’ve helped that boy, then surely you can extend that kindness to others almost as unfortunate. How you would wish others to treat you, could you not treat them?

Frollo: Our Lord Jesus said something very similar. He walks toward Esmeralda and she backs away. You see him on the cross there, gazing down on us?

Choir: SALVE, REGINA

Frollo: Midnight mass is starting. I must go. My child, though your people are lost, maybe something within you can be saved.

Townsperson, yelling at Quasimodo: You! Bellringer! What are you doing down here?

Quasimodo stumbles backward.

Townsperson: Haven't you caused enough trouble already?

Quasimodo runs offstage.

Esmeralda: Wait! She follows Quasimodo offstage.

The townspeople exit offstage. Celesse is alone.

Celesse: I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN HEAR ME

OR IF YOU'RE EVEN THERE

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU WOULD LISTEN

Chapter Text

A trapdoor in the center of the stage opens and Quasimodo comes out of it.

Gargoyles: QUASIMODO, QUICK

YOU’VE GOT TO HIDE

YOU’VE GOT TO RUN

QUASIMODO!

MUSTN’T LET HER FIND YOU

Quasimodo: Oh no, mustn’t.

Gargoyles: FIND A PLACE AND QUICKLY

SO SHE CAN’T SEE

WHERE YOU’VE GONE

HERE SHE COMES!

I THINK SHE’S RIGHT BEHIND YOU

Quasimodo: Oh, I have to hide!

Gargoyles: THIS WAY!

OVER THERE!

CLIMB UP HERE!

Esmeralda , from under the stage : Hello?

Gargoyles: THIS WAY!

FIND A PLACE…

TOO LATE!

They freeze and Quasimodo tries to hide.

Esmeralda: Please don't be afraid. I’m so sorry about what happened to you. She looks around. Oh, what an amazing place. Are you alone up here? Are you… Hello? Can you hear me? She reaches out to Quasimodo and he turns to her. You can’t hear me, can you?

Quasimodo: The bells. But I can still hear a little and read lips.

Esmeralda , speaking more clearly : Well, I thought I heard you when I came up here.

Quasimodo: Oh no, not me. Gargoyles. He gestures to the Gargoyles .

Esmeralda: Gargoyles? Oh, they talk to you?

Quasimodo: Everything talks to me. Wind, a bird, a tree, the bells: my friends. He turns on himself. No, that’s stupid.

Esmeralda: No, no it’s not! I like your friends. Have you lived here a long time?

Quasimodo: Whole life.

Esmeralda: Really? Well, it seems like a wonderful place to live.

Quasimodo: Yes. But in winter… cold. Can see… everything from up here. City gates… River Seine.

Esmeralda: Yes. It sparkles in the light. I'm glad I can get to - to see things down there. She climbs up on the balcony ledge to see clearer. Small problem… I’m afraid of heights. She teeters and Quasimodo pulls her down. Thank you, you’re very strong.

Quasimodo: Yes, I am.

Esmeralda: Still, I’m glad I can get to see things down there. She sits down on the ledge and Quasimodo joins her.

Quasimodo: I...I...it's nice, the two of us sitting...

Esmeralda: THE TWO OF US SITTING

Gargoyles: THE TWO OF YOU SITTING

Esmeralda , Quasimodo , and Gargoyles: SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD

Chapter Text

Esmeralda moves Quasimodo’s hair from out of his face. Quasimodo gets off the ledge and rings the bells for her.

Quasimodo: Oh, bells, oh, Gabriel, ring for her! Sing for her! Sing for Esmeralda!

Esmeralda , she covers her ears : It’s so loud!

Quasimodo: Yes!

Esmeralda: Beautiful, but loud!

Quasimodo: All in good voice today! I knew today would be a special day! Look, up there is hot lead.

Esmeralda: Hot lead?

Quasimodo: Yes, I use to fix the bells. I show you! But careful, it’s very, very hot.

Frollo , entering angrily : Quasimodo, what are you doing ringing the bells at the wrong time? Since when have you ever- He sees Esmerelda . Oh, my child. I looked for you after mass. I thought you left. Instead, I see my charge has distracted you. Quasimodo, you shouldn’t have-

Esmeralda: It was my fault, your grace.

Frollo: Oh, my son, don’t you have duties to perform.

Quasimodo: Yes, master.

Frollo: Don’t stray too far. Quasimodo exits reluctantly and gestures to the Gargoyles to join him. Filling the boy’s head with dreams?

Esmeralda: No, just thoughts. Nothing wrong with thoughts, is there?

Frollo: That depends. Well, you see how impressionable he is. Little more than a child.

Esmeralda: Looking at him I don’t see a child.

Frollo: But you are in a way, you indicated a willingness to learn. A soul who wishes to be saved is already halfway there. I could instruct you in the gospels; share with you our Lord’s grace. You could come here every day. Better yet, perhaps…you could stay here.

Esmeralda , smiles, but then recoils : Stay here?

Frollo , getting more filled with lust : In the cathedral…with me. He attempts to grab Esmerelda’s hand.

Esmeralda , she becomes frightened and backs away : I don’t think that would be a good idea.

Frollo: No?…

Esmeralda: I see the way you look at me.

Frollo , enraged : How dare you? Your soul is so unclean, you can’t imagine goodness in others. I should have known no g*psy would truly want to be saved.

Esmeralda: I don’t think I’m in need of saving. She is slowly trying to get away.

Frollo: Of course, your kind never do. He yells down the stairs. Captain! He grabs Esmeralda. I could be a good friend to you, but I warn you, I could also be a terrible enemy!

Phoebus , entering : Your grace!

Frollo: Escort this g*psy out of the church! She never sets foot here again and if she does she’ll be arrested! He makes Esmeralda leave. Quasimodo! Quasimodo re-enters. That g*psy girl!

Quasimodo: She…she was nice to me.

Frollo: Oh, was she? What do you know of people and their feelings, my boy?

Quasimodo: Feelings? He realizes his mistake. I….nothing.

Frollo: Quasimodo, do you ever have impure thoughts?

Quasimodo: Impure…?

Frollo: Oh, a boy like you; already grown in body possessing those urges and ideas that come to a young man. He is now furious. You must stop. You must stop these feelings! He smacks Quasimodo across the face. You must not follow in the footsteps of your this city! They are weak… and you have is corruption inside of you! Listen to me, Quasimodo, I’m warning you about her. She’s dangerous. She was put in our paths for a reason. To tempt us. Promise me you won’t think of her again.

Quasimodo: Think?

Frollo: Promise! He raises his hand to smack Quasimodo again.

Quasimodo , flinching : I promise. He is crying now.

Frollo , opening his arms and Quasimodo embracing him : Soon we will be rid of her.

Congregation , whispering : Esmeralda….Esmeralda….Esmeralda….

Frollo: It’s just the two of us still, boy. You and I against the world.

Quasimodo: Yes, master!

Frollo: Good boy. Now sound the bells and send the city to sleep. Goodnight.

Quasimodo: Goodnight, master.

Chapter Text

The bells start to ring.

Congregant: But despite his admonition to Quasimodo, Frollo himself cannot stop thinking about her.

Frollo retrieves a cloak and goes out into the night.

Congregant: He began to walk the streets night after night, unable to bring himself to return alone to his cold, dark chambers.

Congregant: He barely knew what he was looking for, but he could not resist…

Frollo , seeing a woman in the street : …so he saw her, everywhere!

Pheobus tries to enter with Celesse but Clopin stops them.

Clopin: I’m sorry, but soldiers aren't welcome here

Phoebus: Relax, I’m just looking for a little rest and recreation, so is my young friend, Celesse, as well.

Clopin: Well, I’m sure we can arrange that. He begrudgingly lets them in. Celesse runs to the dance floor and dances.

Phoebus: Actually, I’m looking for someone in particular.

Clopin: I’m afraid that doesn’t surprise me, but unfortunately she’s already spoken for.

Esmerelda: Oh really, Clopin? Nobody speaks for me.

Clopin , concerned :  I am only looking out for your own welfare.

Esmerelda , giving Clopin a pat on the shoulder : I can look out for myself.

Phoebus: You lose friends easily, don’t you?

Esmerelda: I have that way about me.

Phoebus: Which makes seeing you that more difficult.

Esmerelda: And does that disappoint you?

Phoebus: Does that surprise you?

Esmerelda: Frankly, yes.

Phoebus: Me too.

Esmerelda: Well, you found me, what are you going to do about that?

Phoebus: I told you. I’m not as good as everybody likes to think

Phoebus and Esmerelda join the dance. Celesse watches them with thinly veiled jealousy.

Esmerelda: I have to go.

Phoebus: Why?

Esmerelda: You’re not the only one who needs to make a living.

Phoebus: Where can I find you

The light fades.

Chapter Text

The scene is the bell tower again.

Quasimodo is on a staircase. He is looking down into the square, looking for Esmerelda .

Quasimodo: Oh, I see her!

Gargoyle: That isn’t her…

Quasimodo: You’re right. I keep thinking I see her, everywhere.

Gargoyle: You’re not supposed to be thinking about her.

Quasimodo: Oh, I can’t help it. I miss her.

Gargoyle: Quasimodo, you can think about whoever you want.

Quasimodo: No! Master said I must not.

Gargoyle: He can’t tell you what to think and not think! Besides, you look down there almost every night.

Quasimodo: Yes, but this is different. Everything is different now.

SO MANY TIMES OUT THERE

I'VE WATCHED A HAPPY PAIR

OF LOVERS WALKING IN THE NIGHT

THEY HAD A KIND OF GLOW AROUND THEM

IT ALMOST LOOKED LIKE HEAVEN'S LIGHT

I KNEW I'D NEVER KNOW

THAT WARM AND LOVING GLOW

THOUGH I MIGHT WISH WITH ALL MY MIGHT

NO FACE AS HIDEOUS AS MY FACE

WAS EVER MEANT FOR HEAVEN'S LIGHT

BUT SUDDENLY AN ANGEL HAS SMILED AT ME

AND TOUCHED MY FACE WITHOUT A TRACE OF FRIGHT

I DARE TO DREAM THAT SHE

MIGHT EVEN CARE FOR ME

AND AS I RING THE BELLS TONIGHT

MY COLD DARK TOWER SEEMS SO BRIGHT

I SWEAR IT MUST BE HEAVEN'S LIGHT

Quasimodo’s staircase is wheeled offstage.

Congregation: On the very next morning…

Louis, entering: King Louis the Eleventh, nicknamed “the prudent”…

Congregation: … received a visitor, who arrived announced.

Frollo , entering and kneeling : Your Majesty

Louis , gasps : My astrologer told me I’d have an unexpected guest. He gestures to Frollo .

Frollo: Your Majesty, there is a g*psy witch who is endangering our citizens with her sorcery. She must be stopped. I need special powers to protect the people and the church.

Louis: Frollo, you are a good man, but you know how I hate to be overly hasty.

Frollo: I do, Your Majesty, but be careful, unless the people think you are weak, and the various vergers around the city feel the need to get the upper hand.

Louis: Very well, if you feel you must, but be well…

Louis and Frollo: Prudent.

Frollo: I assure you, Your Majesty, I will do only what is necessary.

The lights fade.

Chapter Text

When the lights come back on, Frollo is standing on a platform. Phoebus and an Offical stand at his side. Celesse stands at Pheobus’ side. Soldiers stand in front of them.

Offical: BY ROYAL EDICT, WARRANT OF ARREST

THE G*PSY KNOWN AS ESMERALDA

BEING UNDER SUSPICION OF SORCERY, WITCHCRAFT

AND THE ARTS OF HELL

ANYONE FOUND HARBORING OR HELPING HER

WILL BE CHARGED AS WELL

Frollo: The King has ordered the g*psy girl’s arrest. The Cathedral Guard will join the King’s soldiers to help find her.

Phoebus: Cathedral Guard? But we have no military power!

Frollo : We do now. By His Majesty’s own authority. When the state asks for our help, the Church must lend support. He is testing Phoebus . I take it I can rely on you to deliver her to me.

Phoebus: Absolutely, your grace

Frollo: HUNT DOWN THE G*PSY ESMERALDA

DON'T LET HER FLEE

AND VANISH IN THE NIGHT

THESE ARE THE FLAMES OF ESMERALDA

WHILE SHE IS FREE

YOUR TORCHES MUST BURN BRIGHT

Soldiers: HUNT DOWN THE G*PSY ESMERALDA

DON'T LET HER FLEE

AND VANISH IN THE NIGHT

THESE ARE THE FLAMES OF ESMERALDA

WHILE SHE IS FREE

OUR TORCHES WILL BURN BRIGHT

Quasimodo enters.

Frollo , to Quasimodo : Have no fear, my boy. We will find her and capture her!

THE WICKED SHALL NOT GO UNPUNISHED

THE HEART OF THE WICKED IS OF LITTLE WORTH

THE WICKED SHALL NOT GO UNPUNISHED

Quasimodo goes to above.

Congregation: ALL THROUGH THE CITY, AT MORE FEVERED PITCH

THAN THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME

The Soldiers search the town.

Pheobus: Two gold pieces for the one who leads us to Esmeralda!

Congregation: Frollo'S MEN SOUGHT ESMERALDA, THE WITCH

WITH THE MIGHT OF NOTRE DAME

Phoebus: Four gold pieces for the one who leads us to Esmeralda!

A Madam enters and stands to the side, arms crossed.

Congregation: TILL AT LAST, THEY WERE TOLD OF A BROTHEL

WHERE THEY SOMETIMES HID ROMANIS FROM HARM

BUT THE MADAM, THAT WHORE

DENIED IT AND SWORE BY THE SAINTS

THE SAINTS OF NOTRE DAME

Soldier: We're looking for La Esmeralda.

Madam: Never heard of her.

Frollo: If you want your house to remain standing, give us the g*psy girl.

Madam: I know nothing of Romani girls.

Frollo: Very well. We'll set fire to it. Burn it. Did your page hear me, Captain?

Celesse , holding the torch in front of her face : AND SHE HELD THE TORCH

THAT CRACKLED LIKE THE ROMA’S VOICE

Frollo: Is your page disobeying a direct order?

Celesse: AND SHE KNEW THIS WAS THE MOMENT

SHE MUST MAKE A CHOICE

Choir: GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS

THEY LOOK TO YOU STILL

Frollo: I knew it. She's bewitched you, too. You would throw away a promising career? Captain? Carry out the order! Phoebus makes no move.

Choir: GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS

OR NOBODY WILL

Celesse: GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS

Celesse and Phoebus: OR NOBODY WILL

After Celesse throws the torch in a barrel of water, Phoebus pushes her to run. Celesse runs offstage and Phoebus keeps the Soldiers from following her.

Frollo: COWARD! TRAITOR! G*PSY'S PAWN!

YOU'RE RELIEVED OF YOUR PATROL

Phoebus: Consider it our highest honor.

Frollo: KYRIE ELEISON

GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL

Arrest Captain Phoebus!

Esmeralda: No!

Frollo: You see? There she is!

Phoebus: Esmeralda!

The SOLDIERS and Esmeralda fight. During the fight, Esmeralda’s knife is knocked out of her hand.

Esmeralda: Phoebus!

Frollo takes the knife and stabs Phoebus in the back, throwing the knife down afterward.

Frollo: The g*psy stabbed the captain! Arrest them both! Celesse enters above and unties hanging barrels, letting them fall down on the Soldiers . Esmeralda takes Phoebus offstage and Celesse follows them from above. Find them! The g*psy, page, and solider!

WHILE THEY ARE FREE

OUR TORCHES WILL BURN BRIGHT

Quasimodo: FIRE! FIRE! SMOKE AND FLAME!

ESMERALDA, WHERE ARE YOU

IN THIS DARK, I CALL YOUR NAME

IS THAT ALL THAT I CAN DO

Esmeralda and Celesse enter to the side, carrying Phoebus .

Phoebus: Esmeralda?

Esmeralda: Shh. She turns to Celesse . You should have minded your own business.

Celesse: It had to be somebody’s business.

Esmeralda: I have to find a place to hide Phoebus. Wait here with him! She runs offstage for help.

Celesse: Hurry! She helps Pheobus sit up.

WHAT HAVE I DONE FOR ESMERALDA

WHY DID I HEAR HER WORDS INSIDE MY HEAD

AND STILL I THINK OF ESMERALDA

WITH MY CAREER AND BOSS ALMOST FOR DEAD

Quasimodo: OUT THERE

Chapter Text

The lights come back on, it’s the bell tower. Quasimodo sits alone.

Esmeralda , entering from below : Quasimodo!

Quasimodo , running to Esmeralda : Esmeralda! You came back!

Esmeralda: Yes, I need your help.

Quasimodo: Anything.

Esmeralda: This is the safest place I could think of to bring him. She opens the trapdoor and whispers down. Celesse, bring him up.

Celesse enters holding Phoebus , she is out of breath.

Celesse: Why, why are there so many steps. She turns to Quasimodo . Hey.

Quasimodo , he is angry and hurt : Why is he here?

Esmeralda: He’s been hurt! Quasimodo?! And he needs to recover. Can you keep him safely hidden somewhere?

Quasimodo: Oh, no. Master-

Esmeralda: Quasimodo, please help me.

Quasimodo , he hesitates : There…

Celesse dramatically drags Phoebus to under the table. Celesse tucks him away before going to the railing and looking down over the city of Paris, fire lights up her face.

Esmeralda: Thank you! It won’t be long. When he’s stronger, send him to me.

Quasimodo: Where?

Esmeralda: Where we Romanis hide: The Court of Miracles.

Quasimodo: Court of Miracles?

Esmeralda: Here. She hands Quasimodo her necklace. When you wear this woven band, you hold the city in your hand.

Celesse , looking up from the railing : Esmeralda, quickly! Someone from the Cathedral Guard will be back soon!

Esmeralda: Yes, thank you Celesse. She goes and hugs Celesse , the hug lasts a little too long but not long enough for Celesse . I must go now. Thank you. She kisses Quasimodo’s cheek and exits.

Celesse and Quasimodo stand there awkwardly.

Quasimodo: Who are you?

Celesse: Celesse Perrot, Phoebus’ page. And you’re Quasimodo.

Quasimodo: Yes. They stand in awkward silence again.

Celesse , almost jealously : You like Esmeralda.

Quasimodo , shocked : What?

Celesse , as if trying to keep someone else from going to Esmeralda but thinly disguising it as indifference : Go after her. You’ll be happy with her, and she’ll be happy with you.

Quasimodo: No, I couldn’t.

Celesse , changing her tone to a forced happy one : Well, why not?

Chapter Text

Celesse:  PARIS, THE CITY OF LOVERS IS GLOWING THIS EVENING

She takes a wooden rod and holds it over the railing, out of the audience’s eyesight.

TRUE, THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S ON FIRE, BUT STILL, THERE'S "L'AMOUR"

She holds up the now on fire rod before dunking it in a nearby bucket of water.

SOMEWHERE OUT THERE IN THE NIGHT

HER HEART IS ALSO ALIGHT

AND I KNOW THE GUY SHE JUST MIGHT BE BURNING FOR!

A GUY LIKE YOU

SHE'S NEVER KNOWN, KID

A GUY LIKE YOU

A GIRL DOES NOT MEET EVERY DAY

YOU'VE GOT A LOOK

THAT'S ALL YOUR OWN, KID

COULD THERE BE TWO...?

Celesse and Gargoyles: LIKE YOU?

Celesse: NO WAY!

THOSE OTHER GUYS

THAT SHE COULD DANGLE

ALL LOOK THE SAME

FROM EVERY BORING POINT OF VIEW!

YOU'RE A SURPRISE

FROM EVERY ANGLE

MON DIEU ABOVE

SHE'S GOTTA LOVE A GUY LIKE YOU

A GUY LIKE YOU

GETS EXTRA CREDIT

BECAUSE IT'S TRUE

YOU'VE GOT A CERTAIN SOMETHING MORE!

YOU'RE ACES, KID

YOU SEE THAT FACE

YOU DON'T FORGET IT

Gargoyles: WANT SOMETHING NEW?

Celesse: THAT'S YOU

Celesse and Gargoyles: FOR SURE!

Celesse: WE ALL HAVE GAPED

AT SOME ADONIS

BUT THEN WE CRAVE A MEAL

MORE NOURISHING TO CHEW

AND SINCE YOU'VE SHAPED

LIKE A CROISSANT IS

Celesse and Gargoyles: NO QUESTION OF

SHE'S GOTTA LOVE

A GUY LIKE YOU!

Celesse: CALL ME A HOPELESS ROMATIC

BUT QUASI, I FEEL IT

SHE WANTS YOU SO, ANY MOMENT

SHE'LL WALK THROUGH THAT DOOR

Celesse and Gargoyles: FOR—

Celesse (Gargoyles): A GUY SO SWELL

(A GUY LIKE YOU)

WITH ALL YOU BRING HER (I TELL YOU QUASI)

(THERE NEVER WAS)

A FOOL COULD TELL (ANOTHER, WAS HE?)

IT’S WHY SHE FELL (FROM KING TO SERF)

FOR YOU-KNOW-WHO (TO THE BOURGEOISIE)

(WE NOTICE EVERY STRING THERE!

Celesse: YOU RING THE BELL

Celesse and Gargoyles: YOU'RE THE BELL RINGER!

WHEN SHE WANTS OOH-LA-LA

THEN SHE WANTS YOU-LA-LA

SHE WILL DISCOVER, GUY

WHO WOULDN'T LOVE A GUY

Celesse: YOU GOT A LOT

THE REST HAVE NOT

SO SHE'S GOTTA LOVE

A GUY LIKE

Celesse and Gargoyles: YOU!

Chapter Text

Quasimodo: No, no, she could never love me.

Celesse: Well, why not?

Quasimodo: Because-

Celesse: I promise. She walks forward and puts a hand on Quasimodo’s shoulder. That someone will love you. They stand there looking at each other. Celesse opens her mouth and looks like she’s going to say something meaningful and deep. We should go after her.

Quasimodo: Go after her? No, can’t!

Celesse , grinning : But she could be in danger.

Quasimodo: I could never go out there.

Celesse: W-you have to save her.

Quasimodo: Save her? Me?

Gargoyle: What’s the matter, are you afraid?

Gargoyle: Of course he’s afraid. And he should be.

Gargoyle: But that’s what makes you a hero! Doing what you’re afraid of!

Gargoyle: A hero, or a saint?

Quasimodo , realizing : You mean like Saint…Saint…what’s your name again?

St. Aphrodisius , he is a beheaded Gargoyle : SAINT APHRODISIUS

THE BISHOP THE BISHOP OF BÉZIERS

I WAS BEHEADED BY

A MOB IN PLACE SAINT-CYR

AND THOUGH I MADE A CHOICE

I DID NOT KNOW WOULD BRING

MY GRIZZLY MODERING

I WOULDN’T CHANGE A THING

FOR I KEPT SAFE AND FREE

THE HOLY FAMILY

OF THAT FLIGHT INTO EGYPT

LAND OF THE DATE AND PALM

I OFFERED SHELTER TO HER

WHO IS NOTRE DAME

AND IF THAT’S WHAT I COULD DO

THEN QUASIMODO YOU CAN TOO

Quasimodo: But even if I could go out there again, how could I find her?

St. Aphrodisius: The amulet she gave you! “When you wear this woven band, you hold the city in your hand”.

Quasimodo: …you hold the city…

Gargoyle: But what is it? Just a web and a jewel!

Gargoyle: It doesn’t mean anything…

St. Aphrodisius: NO IT MUST BE A CLUE

MADE WITH VILE AND ART

Celesse: SHE GAVE IT TO YOU BECAUSE SHE KNOWS YOU’RE SMART

Gargoyle: THINK QUASIMODO

Gargoyle: IS IT HOPELESS?

St. Aphrodisius: OR CAN YOU SEE IN IT

SOMETHING YOU’VE SEEN BEFORE?

Quasimodo: Seen before?…Wait, wait! I know this. Look! This line: that’s the bridge and the street and this jewel

MUST SHOW WHERE WE’RE SUPPOSED TO MEET!

St. Aphrodisius , Celesse , and Gargoyles: YOU’VE DONE IT, QUASIMODO THIS WE’RE CERTAIN OF!

Quasimodo: It’s a map! A map! Look…

IT’S THE CITY SEEN FROM ABOVE!

St. Aphrodisius , Celesse , and Gargoyles: IT’S A MAP OF THE CITY FROM ABOVE!

Quasimodo , he climbs onto the balcony and looks out into the night : I’ll do it. I will go out there tonight while it’s dark. I will find Esmeralda and I will bring her back!

JUST LIKE THE ANGEL

WHO WARNED JOSEPH HE MUST FLEE

I’LL SAVE ESMERALDA

HER ANGEL WILL BE ME

I’LL GIVE HER SANCTUARY

SOMEWHERE SAFE TO HIDE

PROTECTING AT MY SIDE

A LITTLE LIKE A BRIDE.

St. Aphrodisius and Gargoyles: LIKE SAINTS IN STONE AND SONG

Quasimodo: FOR HER I WILL BE STRONG!

St. Aphrodisius , Celesse , and Gargoyles: AND YOUR FLIGHT INTO EGYPT

MAY LAST A WHOLE LIFE LONG

YES, YOUR FLIGHT INTO

MAY LAST

Quasimodo: OUR WHOLE LIFE LONG

Chapter Text

Phoebus , waking up : How did I get here?

Celesse , running to Phoebus, excited to see him well : You’re ok! Esmeralda helped me bring you here.

Phoebus , propping himself up with Celesse’s help : Now I remember. Frollo!

Frollo , entering from below : Quasimodo!

Quasimodo , closing the door on Frollo : Hide!

Celesse helps Phoebus hide. They both hide together.

Frollo , entering : Quasimodo? Quasimodo? I heard something. Was that you?

Quasimodo: Yes, Master.

Frollo: Were you talking to someone?

Quasimodo: Just…my friend.

Frollo: Oh, your friends. Today was quite an eventful day.

Quasimodo: Ah, yes! That, too!

Frollo: Yes. The fires. Couldn’t be helped, I’m afraid. I’m glad you were up here safe from it all.

Quasimodo: Story! Story! Saint Aphrodisius!

Frollo: Oh, good memory. You seem distracted, my boy. Is something troubling you?

Quasimodo: Troubling? No no.

Frollo, aware that he is being lied to: Quasimodo, you know I’m looking for Esmeralda for her own good. If you had any idea where she might be, it would be of great help to her and to me. Did she say anything when she spoke to you. Did she tell you where she sats?

Quasimodo: I…I…

Frollo: Yes?

Congregation: AND THE HUNCHBACK

LOOKED HIS MASTER

IN HIS PIERCING EYE

Frollo: Quasimodo?

Congregation: AND FOR THE

VERY FIRST TIME

IN HIS LIFE HE TOLD A LIE

Quasimodo: No! No Esmeralda.

Frollo: Well, that’s the answer then. Don’t be frightened, my boy. I’m not angry with you.

I KNOW WHAT LITTLE CHOICE YOU HAD

YOU WERE SEDUCED

SEDUCED BY ESMERALDA

I KNOW YOU DON’T MEAN TO BE BAD

AND YOU FEEL GRATITUDE FOR ALL I’VE DONE

WHY, THERE ARE TIMES

I ALMOST THINK OF YOU

AS MY SON

Frederic , entering from the door : Excuse me, Your Grace.

Frollo: Don’t interrupt me here!

Frederic: Beg pardon, but I have good news. My men believe they have found the g*psy’s hiding place.

Frollo: The Court of Miracles!

Frederic , laughs : Yes, they call it so. He exits.

Frollo: Well, I’m afraid their miracle has run out. We will attack at dawn. You see my boy, everything will be fine.

I WILL FIND HER

NEVER FEAR

THEN I WILL

REJOIN YOU HERE

TO CHEER HER CAPTURE

IN OUR CHEERY SANCTUARY

He exits.

Chapter Text

Quasimodo whimpers.

Phoebus: Esmeralda. I have to warn her and the others.

Celesse, trying to hold him down: Phoebus, please you’re hurt. Stay here with me, where you’re safe.

Quasimodo: You? No! I.

Phoebus: You? How could you possibly? You can hardly speak!

Quasimodo: You can barely walk!

Phoebus: You don’t know where anything in the city is!

Quasimodo: I see all from up here. Besides, I have clue. It’s a map. She gave me.

Phoebus: Give that to me! He grabs the necklace.

Celesse, trying to grab the necklace: Phoebus! Give him his necklace back!

Quasimodo, trying to grab the necklace: No! Esmeralda gave it to me.

Phoebus: Yes, but I need it to find her.

Quasimodo: I will find her.

Celesse: Let him do it.

Phoebus: Him? Don’t be ridiculous, Celesse.

Phoebus: SOMETHING MUST BE DONE

SURELY YOU CAN SEE

REALISTICALLY

WHO’S GOT THE KNACK HERE

CLEARLY, I’M THE ONE

WHO CAN SAVE THE DAY

YOU’D BE IN THE WAY

SO-

Quasimodo  grabs the necklace and runs offstage.

HEY, COME BACK HERE!

He follows Quasimodo and Celesse follows him.

Congregation: So Quasimodo and Phoebus. Quasimodo and Phoebus reenter, they’re sneaking and looking around.

Celesse, she runs in after them: And Celesse

Congregation: Quickly made their way through the dark streets of Paris, though the hunchback felt a thrill of fear at once more setting foot outside Notre Dame.

A small section of a wooden wall is rolled out. It is cracked and looks almost as if it could be a makeshift door.

Quasimodo: OUT HERE ONCE AGAIN

BEYOND MY PARAPETS OF STONE

STEALING THROUGH THE TWISTING STREETS

OF NIGHT WITH THE UNKNOWN

STILL I MUST DO ANYTHING TO SAVE HER

Congregation: Creeping past the ghostly fountains beside which beggars slept. They ducked into the shadows to avoid being seen by a pair of women at the windows holding candles, which sputtered in the gathering fog. The curfew had sounded long ago and the streets were becoming blacker and more deserted every moment. They could distinguish nothing of the mass of buildings, except black roofs at strange acute angles. And the labyrinth of alleys and bridges like a ball of thread tangled by a cat.

Phoebus: I think you got us completely lost!

Quasimodo No, should be…right…here.

Phoebus: Here? Where? Where the hell are we?

Celesse: Looks like a cemetery.

Phoebus: Oh god. You’ve taken us completely in the wrong direction.

Quasimodo: Hmm, what’s that?

Phoebus: I don’t see anything.

Celesse, examining the wall while leaning on it with her hand: What’s- As she speaks the wall falls back and she goes to the ground.  She looks up to see a group of Romanis who appeared to be in the middle of a conversation.

The Romanis look at Celesse, Phoebus, and Quasimodo is shock before jumping up in a panic and running around getting ready to defend themselves.

Chapter Text

Clopin , defensively : Intruders? Spies of Frollo? Welcome to the Court of Miracles. Very clever of you to find our hideaway, but we won’t let you tell Frollo.

Romanis, they sing in a mocking tone, mocking the lies Frollo tells about the Romanis: MAYBE YOU’VE BEEN TOLD

OF A TERRIBLE PLACE

WHERE THE SCOUNDRELS OF PARIS

COLLECT IN A LAIR

MAYBE YOU’VE BEEN TOLD

OF THAT MYTHICAL PLACE

CALLED THE COURT OF MIRACLES

They surround Phoebus , Celesse , and Quasimodo .

Clopin: HELLO, YOU'RE THERE!

Romanis: WHERE WE CAN BE FREE FROM THE OUTSIDE HELL

Romanis: AND WE CAN LIVE IN SAFETY AND PEACE

Clopin: BUT WE CAN’T LET YOU TELL

SO YOU WON'T BE AROUND

TO REVEAL WHAT YOU'VE FOUND

Romanis: WE HAVE A METHOD FOR SPIES AND INTRUDERS

RATHER LIKE A MOTHER PROTECTING HER CHILDREN

HERE IN THE COURT OF MIRACLES

WHERE IT'S A MIRACLE IF WE LET YOU TELL THAT VILLAIN

Clopin: IT ALWAYS HURTS

WHEN A LIFE’S SO OPPRESSED

I HAVE TO ADMIT

IT MAKES ME SEE STARS

BUT WE MUST PROTECT AT MOST OUR SECRET

ITS OUR LIVES OR YOURS!

AND WE WON’T GIVE YOU OURS!

Chapter Text

Esmeralda , running in : Wait, stop! These people are my friends.

Clopin: More than we are, apparently! Go!

Esmeralda: Hey!

The Romanis cry out at Esmeralda .

Clopin , hurt : How could you betray us like this?

Esmeralda: I didn’t betray you.

Clopin: No! Then what would you call telling them our hiding place? The Romanis yell out in agreement. I thought we were a family?

Celesse , gently walking forwards : No, she didn’t betray you. We’ve come to warn you! Frollo knows your hiding place. He plans on attacking at dawn

Clopin: All right, keep calm! How do you know this?

Quasimodo: Master told me.

Clopin: Oh, why should we believe either of you? You’re Frollo’s slave! And him; he’s a soldier and we don't trust soldiers! And she’s…

Celesse , like she gets this a lot : His page.

Clopin: And she’s his page!

Esmeralda: They’re not soldiers any more!

Celesse: I- we’re just as much outcasts as you.

Romani: Clopin, if this is true...

Romani: We don’t have much time!

Romani: We need to get ready to leave.

Clopin: I thought we’d have had a few years here at least. Yes, we must move quickly…Yes now! Esmeralda! Go pack now.

Phoebus: Pack? You’re going with them.

Clopin: Of course, she is. No matter what, we won’t leave one of our own behind.

Esmeralda: Thank you, Clopin.

Phoebus: Esmeralda, no.

Esmeralda: What would you have me do?

Phoebus: Come with me?

Esmeralda , she makes a face but hides it with a smile : Where?

Phoebus , trying to stop Esmeralda : I don’t know. We could make a life together.

Esmeralda: You really are a dreamer, aren't you? She goes to Quasimodo .

Quasimodo: Esmeralda. I hide you. I keep safe.

Esmeralda: Quasimodo, no.

Quasimodo: Maybe in crypts. And all…

Esmeralda: Thank you, Quasimodo, but it would be too dangerous. And not just for me. For you, too. She turns to Celesse . Cel-

Phoebus: Then if you won’t come with me, I’ll come with you.

Celesse , she looks panicked : You go with her?

Esmeralda , she steps back : You can’t, Phoebus.

Phoebus: Why not? There’s nothing here for me anymore. Maybe there never was.

Celesse, hurt: What?

Esmeralda: Yes, but to become like one of us…

Clopin: You’re crazy. You don't know what you'd be facing.

Phoebus: I sure have gotten a pretty good idea of the last few weeks.

Esmeralda: Please, I need to go. She walks to the other side of the stage.

Chapter Text

Quasimodo stands in the middle of the stage. Esmeralda and Phoebus on seperate sides. Celesse doesn’t move from her spot in the shadows. The Romanis are packing.

Phoebus: HERE WE ARE, NEARLY STRANGERS

FROM TWO WORLDS THAT'VE RARELY MET

BUT SOMEHOW, YOU HAVE MADE ME SOMEONE NEW

TRAVELING FAR ON A JOURNEY

THAT'S THE LONGEST I'VE TAKEN YET

NOW I'M ASKING IF YOU WILL LET ME COME WITH YOU

THOUGH OUR LIVES ARE TATTERED AND TORN

ALL I'M FEELING NOW IS REBORN

I MUST BE IN A PLACE OF MIRACLES

Esmerelda: WHERE THE BLIND CAN SEE

Phoebus and Esmerelda: IN A PLACE OF MIRACLES

Phoebus: A MIRACLE YOU'VE BROUGHT TO ME

Phoebus and Esmerelda: THE SOLDIER AND THE ROMANI

LOCKED IN AN EMBRACE

IN A PLACE OF MIRACLES

Quasimodo: I KNEW I'D NEVER KNOW

THAT WARM AND LOVING GLOW

THOUGH I MIGHT WISH WITH ALL MY MIGHT

NO FACE AS HIDEOUS AS MY FACE

WAS EVER MEANT FOR HEAVEN'S LIGHT

Esmerelda: ALL THIS TIME

Quasimodo (Esmerelda): THIS TIME IT'S TIME

I'VE LEARNED (I’VE BEEN CERTAIN)

NO LOVE WILL BE

RETURNED

Esmerelda: THAT MY LIFE

WOULD BE SPENT

ALONE

Quasimodo (Esmerelda): TO ONE

WHO'S BORN

TO BE ALONE (AND ONCE MORE)

(I’VE PRETENDED)

WHO LOOKS BOTH (NOT TO CARE)

LAUGHABLE AND

FRIGHTENING

Phoebus (Quasimodo): BUT NOW

I’M HERE BESIDES YOU (AND NOW I KNOW)

Quasimodo (Phoebus and Esmeralda): THERE'LL BE NO

MIRACLES FOR

ME (NO MORE NEED)

(FOR A HEART OF STONE)

BETTER TO HAVE

A HEART OF STONE (THOUGH WE’LL SET OUT)

(FOR LANDS UNKNOWN)

(THEY’RE)

THAT HOLDS NO (LANDS WE’LL SHARE)

HOPE IN

HEAVEN’S LIGHT

Romanis: WILL WE REACH A FRIENDLIER SHORE

WILL WE FIND A HAVEN ONCE MORE

WHERE WE'LL BE IN A PLACE OF MIRACLES

NOW WE LEAVE OUR HOME

FOR A PLACE OF MIRACLES

Clopin: ROMANIS AGAIN MUST ROAM

COULD THERE BE A COUNTRY

KINDER TO OUR RACE

Romanis (Quasimodo (Phoebus and Esmeralda): IN A PLACE OF

MIRACLES (WHERE’S MY)

(PLACE OF)

(MIRACLES? (IN A PLACE)

All except Celesse: OF MIRACLES

Chapter Text

Celesse falls to the ground.

Chapter Text

The Romanis come back to life and begin packing. Esmeralda notices Celesse and goes to talk to her. Esmeralda taps Celesse on the head. Celesse looks up at Esmeralda before jumping up and backing away.

Esmeralda: Celesse, are you ok?

Celesse: I-I…

Esmeralda walks forwards and holds out her hand. Celesse blushes before walking forwards but just as they’re about to touch Frollo enters with his Soldiers .

Frollo: Sorry to interrupt.

The Romanis scream and try to escape but are rounded up by the Soldiers .

Quasimodo: Master!

Frollo: Congratulations, my boy. You led us right to them.

Quasimodo: I? But, no…

Frollo: You didn't really think our soldier here had found this place, did you? So I finally get to see the Court of Miracles. It’s not so impressive. Arrest the g*psy and the traitors.

Esmeralda , jumps in front Celesse : Spare Celesse! Take me.

Celesse , pushes Esmeralda aside : No! Take me instead!

Frollo: Oh, how noble you two are. Take them both away. Round up the rest of the g*psies and bring them to the Bastille.

Quasimodo: No, no

Frollo: My boy… He grabs Quasimodo by the ear. I’m very disappointed in you. Take him back to the bell tower. Make sure he cannot leave it!

A Solider takes Quasimodo away. The rest of the Soldiers take the Romanis , Phoebus , and Celesse away with Frollo right behind them.

Chapter Text

The Congregation enters.

Congregant: JUSTICE IN PARIS WAS OFTEN DISPLAYED

IN THE SQUARE AT NOTRE DAME

Congregant: NOW AS THE WOOD FOR A PYRE WAS LAID

IN THE SQUARE AT NOTRE DAME

Congregant: THERE CAME SOME THERE WHO SOUGHT ENTERTAINMENT

Congregant: AND SOME WHO WISHED ALL ROMANIS HARM

Congregation: FOR THE RUMOR WAS GROWING A ROMANI WAS GOING

TO BURN AT DAWN AT NOTRE DAME

Chapter Text

A cell appears. Esmeralda is pushed into it. Frollo enters and stops.

Frollo: Do you feel as uncomfortable as you look?

Esmeralda: I wouldn't give you the pleasure.

Frollo: It brings me no pleasure. I want to set you free.

Esmeralda: Then why don't you?

Frollo: Because in order to do that, I need you to make me a promise. You see? I still want to help you. I still believe your soul can be saved.

Esmeralda , running from Frollo : Not the way you save! I’d rather die!

Frollo: What about Celesse? Your little sin? Would you rather she die as well?

Esmeralda: No…

Frollo: Their fates lie in your hands.

Esmeralda: What?…I don't understand. Why me of all people?!

Frollo: I don't know why! I wish I knew! Sometimes we’re drawn to the very things that would repel us.

Esmeralda: You truly are a monster.

Frollo: No. No! Esmerelda, no. If these last few weeks have taught me anything, it’s that my curses…I’m truly human. Take pity on me. I deserted myself. You don't know what my love for you is! It’s fire! It’s hot lead!

G*PSY WITCH

YOU ROUSE IN ME

THE FOOLISH WISH

TO SET YOU FREE

I’LL TAKE YOU SOMEWHERE

I CAN BE YOUR SANCTUARY

I WILL SAVE YOU, SORCERESS

AND RAISE YOU UP TO HOLINESS

TOGETHER WE WILL SHARE

A BLESSED SANCTUARY

Frollo takes out Esmeralda’s scarf and tries to wrap it around her. He pulls her into his body and she struggles to keep off of him. She screams.

Frollo: Love me! Love me! Yes!

Esmeralda: No! No! She screams and claws at Frollo’s cheek, who falls. Demon! Demon! Help me! Please!

Frollo: Very well. Guard!

Frederic , entering : Your grace?

Frollo: Is there prisoner there?

Frederic: Yes, Your Grace.

Frollo: Bring her in! Frederic exits. Perhaps my dear, this will help you to think over my offer. Exchange your last words with each other. Unless, of course, you change your mind. Frederic reenters holding Celesse . Don’t let them stay together too long. He exits.

Frederic: Yes, your grace. He exits.

Chapter Text

Celesse , she goes to comfort Esmeralda : Esmeralda…

Esmeralda: Celesse…

Celesse: Frollo. What has he done?

Esmeralda: He said…  he…offered to set me free.

Celesse: Well, that’s wonderful.

Esmeralda: …If I give myself up to him.

Celesse: … No… No! There must be another way to save you.

Esmeralda: That’s not what I would call saving myself…But it would save you.

Celesse : Me?

Esmeralda: That would be part of the bargain. He’ll spare you.

Celesse: I don’t care about what happens to me. But do it for yourself.

Esmeralda: No. But, do you know what happened to Phoebus?

Celesse , she pauses, not expecting that : I-I… Yes, I do.

Esmeralda: What… what happened?

Celesse: We were put in a cell together, and very early this morning a soldier came down and he took Phoebus away, and never brought him back… She begins to sob.

Esmeralda , holding Celesse close : Celesse, I’m so sorry.

Celesse: He was like a brother to me, he took me in and cared for me! And he’s dead! He’s dead! Please, Esmeralda, save yourself! Don’t let me die knowing you and Phoebus also had to die!

Esmeralda: I can’t… I’m so sorry, Celesse…

Celesse: Esmeralda…

Frederic , entering : Time’s up.

Celesse: Please, Frederic, you knew Phoebus. Just give me a little more time.

Frederic , pausing : You have four minutes. He exits.

Esmeralda: We’ve had so little time, we’ve known each other for so little, but… I want to spend my life with you.

Celesse: I want to spend my life with you too. You’re braver and much more honorable than any soldier I’ve ever met.

Esmeralda: I don’t feel very brave. But, if there really is a heaven, I don’t care what the church say, we will go there together. We will go to heaven and we will be together and we will love each other. Maybe we’ll be able to watch the world together from the clouds. When all this is gone and the world is a better place.

I USED TO BELIEVE

IN THE DAYS I WAS NAIVE

THAT I'D LIVE TO SEE

A DAY OF JUSTICE DAWN

AND THOUGH I WILL DIE

LONG BEFORE THAT MORNING COMES

I'LL DIE WHILE BELIEVING STILL

IT WILL COME WHEN I AM GONE

SOMEDAY

WHEN WE ARE WISER

WHEN THE WORLD'S OLDER

WHEN WE HAVE LEARNED

I PRAY

SOMEDAY WE MAY YET LOVE

TO LOVE AND LET LOVE

SOMEDAY

LOVE WILL BE FAIRER

Celesse: LOVE WILL BE FAIRER

Esmeralda: HATE WILL BE RARER

Celesse: HATE WILL BE RARER

Esmeralda: HEARTS WILL NOT PAY

Celesse: HEARTS WILL NOT PAY

Esmeralda: GODSPEED

Celesse: GODSPEED

Esmeralda: THIS BRIGHT MILLENNIUM

Celesse: THIS BRIGHT MILLENNIUM

Esmeralda: ON IT'S WAY

Esmeralda and Celesse: LET IT COME SOMEDAY

Celesse: WHEN THE WORLD'S OLDER

WHEN THINGS HAVE CHANGED

Esmeralda and Celesse: SOMEDAY

THESE DREAMS WILL ALL BE REAL

TILL THEN, WE'LL

WISH UPON THE MOON

CHANGE WILL COME

Celesse: ONE DAY

Esmeralda: SOMEDAY

Esmeralda and Celesse: SOON

Frederic , reentering : Time’s up. He grabs Celesse and starts dragging her out.

Celesse: Wait, no!

Esmeralda: No! Please, give us more time!

Frederic: I’ve already given you more time. Come on let’s go!

Esmeralda , jumping forwards and kissing Celesse : Celesse, I love you.

Celesse: I love you too. Frederic drags her out.

Esmeralda falls to the ground sobbing. Another Solider enters. He looks down at her and she looks up at him. Broken, Esmeralda stands up and let’s him drag her out.

Choir: KYRIE ELEISON

Congregation: WHILE THE CITY SLUMBERED

QUASIMODO SAT AWAKE

AS THE NIGHT CREPT PERILOUSLY ONWARD

NOT ONE WORD HE UTTERED

NOT ONE MOVEMENT DID HE MAKE

AWAITING THE INEXORABLE DAWN

Choir: KYRIE ELEISON

Quasimodo is chained to the banisters of Notre Dame. The Gargoyles surround him.

Gargoyles: Quasimodo you must try to free yourself!  The girl needs your help!

Quasimodo: Quiet! Go away

Gargoyles: You're the only one who can save her now

Quasimodo: You know what happens when I try to help. I only make things worse

Gargoyles: You don't believe that!

Quasimodo: HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT I BELIEVE

WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF ME

WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF ALL THE THINGS I FEEL

YOU'RE ONLY MADE OF STONE

WHO IS IT THAT YOU SEE

INSTEAD OF SEEING WHAT I AM FOR REAL

THIS TWISTED FLESH AND BONE

Gargoyle: Quasimodo, it wasn't your fault!

Quasimodo: YOU'RE A LIAR!

WITH EV'RY NEW EXCUSE YOU TRY OUT

YOU ONLY MAKE ME WANT TO CRY OUT

"WOULD THAT I WERE MADE OF STONE LIKE YOU"

Gargoyle: You don't mean that! Just take some time to—

Quasimodo: YOU GIVE SUCH GOOD ADVICE

SO WHY HAS NOT ONE SINGLE WORD YOU'VE SAID

BEEN ANY HELP AT ALL

Gargoyles: Quasimodo...

Quasimodo: AND YOU WHO SOUND SO NICE

THE MORE YOUR DREAMS AND FANCIES FILL MY HEAD

THE FARTHER THAT I FALL

SHUT MY BRAIN DOWN

IF I WERE SENSELESS, I'D PREFER IT

ANOTHER GARGOYLE ON THIS TURRET

SPITTING RAIN DOWN TO THE STONES BELOW

I'VE WASTED MY FAITH BELIEVING IN SAINTS OF PLASTER

BUT THE ONLY ONE WORTH BELIEVING IN WAS MY MASTER

HE'S THE ONE WHO NEVER LIED

HE TOLD ME IT WAS CRUEL OUTSIDE

HE TOLD ME HOW I HAD TO HIDE

HIS WORDS WERE COLD AS STONE

BUT THEY WERE TRUE

NOT LIKE YOU

TAKE ALL THE DREAMS YOU'VE SOWN

TAKE ALL YOUR LIES

AND LEAVE ME ALONE

Gargoyle: ALL RIGHT, QUASIMODO

WE'LL LEAVE YOU ALONE

Gargoyle: ALL RIGHT, QUASIMODO

WE'LL TROUBLE YOU NO LONGER

Gargoyle: YOU'RE RIGHT, QUASIMODO

WE'RE ONLY MADE OF STONE

Gargoyles: WE JUST THOUGHT THAT YOU WERE

MADE OF SOMETHING

STRONGER

They derobe, become Congregants and exit.

Quasimodo: AND NOW I'M ON MY OWN

NEVER AGAIN TO WONDER WHAT'S OUT THERE

LET IT REMAIN UNKNOWN

AND MY ONE HUMAN EYE

WILL EVER MORE BE DRY

UNTIL THE DAY I DIE

AS IF I WERE MADE OF STONE

In the square, a pyre is set for the burning. Celesse and Esmeralda enter and embrace. They are broken apart and Esmeralda is brought up to the pyre. Frollo joins her.

Frollo: The prisoner has been found guilty of entering the city of Paris illegally, guilty of stabbing a soldier in the church, and guilty of the crime of witchcraft. The sentence is death!

Choir: KYRIE ELEISON

Frollo: I will give you this opportunity to recant and save yourself. He whispers to Esmeralda . Think of what I’ve offered. What is your answer? Esmeralda spits in his face.

Choir: LIBERA ME DOMINE

Frollo: For the justice of the realm and for the salvation of Paris, it is my sacred duty to send this unholy demon back to hell! The Executioner lowers the flame to the wood. He stops the Executioner . He grabs the torch and lights the fire himself.

Quasimodo: Sanctuary!

Choir: IN EXCELSIS

Frollo: Captain, seize the cathedral!

Captain: But sir, the laws of sanctuary!

Frollo: I am the archdeacon of this cathedral, I negate the laws of sanctuary! Open those doors! Ram them through if you must!

Congregation: As the soldiers attempted to throw open the church doors, they suddenly saw Quasimodo hurl giant stones and wooden beams.

Choir: DIES IRAE

Frollo: Use them to break down the doors!

Congregation: As the soldiers pounded at the great door, a foggier suddenly appeared where Celesse was being held!

Celesse: And she was set free!

Clopin: By the heroic Clopin!

Congregation: And together they rallied the people to fight!

Celesse: HEAR ME, PEOPLE OF PARIS

Choir: ACCELERE FIAT VENIRE OLIM

Congregation: The people fought the soldiers but could not hold them back. With one final blow, they knocked down the doors. And Quasimodo, ran back and forth trying to find a way to stop them. Until, he came upon the great vats of molten lead sitting up on the roof.

Choir: MORS STUPEBIT ET NATURA

Solider: My God, look up there! He’s way up there!

Quasimodo and the Gargoyles stir the hot lead.

Quasimodo: COME ALL YOU SAINTS OF STONE

ALL YOU GUARDIANS AND GARGOYLES

RAISE THE FIRE IN THE NIGHT

RAISE THE FIRE NOW AND LIGHT

THESE VATS OF LEAD

STEAMING, BOILING STREAMS OF LEAD

BURNING LEAD AND LET

THE FLAMES GROW HIGHER

OH, SAINTS AND MONSTER

SHOW YOUR POWER

HELP ME TO SEND THIS RAGING SHOWER

RAINING FIRE ON THE STONE BELOW

The hot lead is poured down onto the chaos below. The smoke clears and Quasimodo returns to where he his Esmeralda .

Quasimodo: We’ve done it, Esmeralda! Beaten them back! Esmeralda? You are home.

Esmerelda: Home?

HERE AGAIN AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD

TWO FRIENDS ENJOYING THIS BEAUTIFUL MORNING

IN MY EYES YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, TOO

SHARING THE TOP OF THE WORLD

Quasimodo: Can stay inside here forever

Esmerelda: I don’t think…forever. You are such a good friend, Quasimodo

Quasimodo: Yes, your friend... With one last breath, Esmeralda seemingly dies in his arms. Esmeralda? Esmeralda, wake up!

Frollo , entering from below : Is she dead?

Quasimodo: Because of you!

Frollo: It was my duty

Quasimodo: Duty?

Frollo: Now we can finally go back to the way things were

Quasimodo: No! Never go back

Frollo: We will. You’ll see

AT LAST WE'RE FREE OF ESMERALDA

NOW THAT SHE'S GONE

THE POISON DIES WITH HER

NOW THAT WE'RE FREE OF ESMERALDA

WE CAN GO ON

AS CLOSE AS ONCE WE WERE

HERE IN OUR SANCTUARY

SANCTUARY

Quasimodo: Sanctuary? No sanctuary without her!

Frollo: It was her choice, Quasimodo. I could have helped her. Even loved her

Quasimodo: Love? What do you know of love? Who have you ever loved?

Frollo: I loved... I loved my city. I tried to teach them

Quasimodo: You? Teach them?

Frollo: Yes, as I've tried to teach you! But they were wicked, weak!

Quasimodo: No—you are the weak one. You’re the wicked one! Imitating his master, he rises up and stands taller than Frollo , with the look of vengeance in his eyes. And the wicked shall not go unpunished!

Congregation: THE WICKED SHALL NOT GO UNPUNISHED

THE HEART OF THE WICKED IS OF LITTLE WORTH

THE WICKED SHALL NOT GO UNPUNISHED

The Congregation form the balcony and Quasimodo slams the door shut, cutting off an exit for Frollo .

Quasimodo grabs Frollo and lifts him over the balcony.

Frollo: Let go of me, Quasimodo! Quasimodo! Let go!

Quasimodo: I told you, master. I am very strong!

Frollo: You don’t want to hurt me!

Congregation: Yes, you do. Quasimodo raised his two huge hands and, with a great bellow, threw his master over the edge of the roof into the abyss below.

Frollo is thrown to his death.

Frollo: Damnation!

Quasimodo weeps.

Congregation: THE WORLD IS CRUEL

THE WORLD IS UGLY

BUT THERE ARE TIMES

AND THERE ARE PEOPLE

WHEN THE WORLD IS NOT

AND AT ITS CRUELEST

IT'S STILL THE ONLY WORLD WE'VE GOT
