Karaoke Kitchen

Chapter Text

Soma arrived to the seminar on time for once. As he settled into his spot next to Megumi, he noticed something strange.

"Hey, shouldn't the teacher be here by now?" He asked Megumi.

"Uh, yes. He should've been here before we were, but there's no sign of him, and the seminar should have started several minutes ago," she replied nervously.

"Huh. And I showed up on time today too. That sucks," he grumbled.

Suddenly, the door burst open and a strange woman rushed in.

"Sorry I'm late, traffic, you know? Anyway, I'm your substitute teacher for today, your teacher is sick. Call me Ms. Young," she said hurriedly before humming to herself for a second, "Your teacher says I can make a challenge for you to complete in class today. I think I'll make this interesting. How about...you have to sing the last song you listened to while cooking a dish inspired by it? I'll provide karaoke of course, and it'll help you learn about each other more, as well as providing a fun challenge!" she smiled to herself as she declared their challenge.

Everyone was stunned, not only by her sudden appearance, but also by the eccentric challenge, though no one complained. This would certainly be an interesting day.

"Alright class, let's get this started!" The strange teacher exclaimed,"Who wants to go first?" She looked around the room quickly and only saw puzzled faces, "No volunteers? Fine. I'll choose randomly," She said sadly.

She closed her eyes, pointed her finger, and spun around a few times, finally landing on Soma.

"Ok! You'll be our first 'contestant'," She said, grinning excitedly.

"Alright. Time to get cooking!" Soma replied, "Do I just tell you what song I'm singing, or what?"

"Come over here and tell me quietly, so it's more of a surprise for your classmates," She answered.

Soma walked over to where she was standing and whispered in her ear. She seemed surprised for a moment, then giggled and hooked her phone up to the classroom speakers. The opening notes of a song began to play. It was unfamiliar to most of the class, but Soma began singing after a moment, as he prepared his ingredients.

"Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September
ends"

The class was stunned by his lovely voice. Who knew Soma could sing?

"Like my father's come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September
ends"

He continued to prepare his dish as he sang the next verse. (AN: this is the chorus, just to make that clear)

"Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September
ends"

He continued singing as he started making the dish, the music picking up halfway through the verse, startling the other students.

"Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September
ends
Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September
ends"

He repeated the chorus as he put the dish in the oven. As it was cooking, he sang the last verse of the song.

"Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September
ends
Like my father's come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September
ends"

He finally presented the dish with a grin and his signature phrase. As Ms. Young examined the dish and took a delicious bite, she noticed a few key things.

"So, you used ingredients that are reminiscent of fall and change? Interesting! The flavors combine beautifully and leave a nostalgic taste! Overall, this was an excellent dish. Yukihira, you have passed this excercise with flying colors," She noted.

Megumi gulped. How was she supposed to keep up with that?! Not only did he cook wonderfully, as she expected, but he also sang well! Was there anything Soma couldn't do?

"Well, class," Ms. Young said, breaking Megumi from her thoughts, "Let's get to the next one, shall we? Soma set a great example."

Chapter Text

Ms. Young spun around with her eyes closed again. This time her finger landed on...Megumi!

"Looks like it's your turn! Come over here and tell me your song please," Ms. Young stated.

"A-alright," Megumi replied, before going to the corner where Ms. Young was standing and whispered in her ear. Ms. Young smiled and her eyes seemed to gleam at Megumi's whisper.

Megumi began to set up her cooking station for prep as Ms. Young started the music. The first notes rang out sweetly and Megumi began singing softly.

"I think I
Love you like
A car crash, dear
I don't want
Your wreckage but
It seems I cannot steer
My eyes away now,
You know I couldn't stay now,
Let me go, let me go
Angels raise accusing eyes
I'm gonna lose him
Let me go, let me go"

Her voice was sweet and soft as she sang the first verse and began the chorus, as she prepared the ingredients for her dish.

"'Cause I might let you break my heart
If mine was all that I was worth
And I might let you break my heart
If I don't break it first
Oh oh, oh oh"
(This is the chorus, just to clear that up)

She smiled sadly as she sang the chorus, beginning to make her dish, which appeared to be some form of red velvet cake.

"The old star clock it laughs itself to
sleep tonight
And that fork in the road would bleed
me like a knife
But you're moving faster
What a beautiful disaster
Let me go, let me go
Angels raise accusing eyes
I'm gonna lose him
Let me go, let me go"

She mixed her ingredients and repeated the chorus, before her voice got higher and she continued the song, mixing the cake batter and preparing toppings.

"And maybe I will taste you
In another time and place, you look
so good
I bet you taste like something sweet
But hell is overflowing
And there's no way of knowing if I
Give up heaven for one moment
Will I get it back?"

She took the cake out of the oven, iced it, and arranged the toppings she had made while singing the last verse of the song.

"I think I love you like a car crash
One wrong move and there's no
looking back
I won't throw away my
Forever by the wayside
Let me go, let me go
Angels raise accusing eyes
I'm gonna lose him
Let me go, just let me go
And I might let you break my heart
If only mine would hurt
Oh oh, oh oh"

Megumi presented the dish to Ms. Young nervously as the last notes of the song died out. Ms. Young bit into a piece of the delicious dessert.

"Mmmm! The texture of the cake is exquisite! The red velvet really conveys the feeling of the song, which was lovely, might I add..."

As Ms. Young went on about the dish, Megumi heaved a sigh of relief. She was glad that was over. So stressful! At least it turned out well. Once Ms. Young finished her critique of the dish, Megumi headed back to her seat.

"You did great, Megumi!" Soma commented, to which Megumi only smiled and nodded bashfully. The room went silent as Ms. Young walked to the center of the classroom once again, ready to choose the next participant.

Chapter Text

Ms. Young spun around once more, finally landing on...

"Ah, Takumi Aldini, you're the next lucky participant!" She exclaimed.

That was fine with Takumi. He wanted to show up Yukihira after all. He wouldn't lose this time! He knew his singing voice was lovely, and he had competed in karaoke contests back in Italy. Granted, they were small-time competitions, but he had still won!

He easily complied and whispered his song to Ms. Young once he'd been beckoned over. She quickly set up the music, and he began prepwork as the intro to the song played. Then, he began to sing in a slightly mournful tone.

"If I get murdered in the city
Don't go revenging in my name
On person dead from such is plenty
No need to go get locked away
When I leave your arms
Things that I think of
No need to get over alarmed
I'm coming home,"

The other students seemed startled by his choice of songs, though Izami just smiled at him. Very few people were surprised by the lovely tenor of his voice, and several of his fangirls were squealing. He began to make his dish in honest, by then. To no one's surprise, it was a dessert. When he continued singing, he seemed to look directly at Izami.

"I wonder which brother was better?
Which one our parents loved the most?
I sure did get in lots of trouble
They seemed to let the other go
A tear fell from my father's eye
I wonder what my dad would say
He said 'I love you and I'm proud of you both
In so many different ways'"

Takumi smiled at that verse, knowing the honesty in that sentiment. As he mixed the ingredients for frosting while the dessert baked, he continued the song.

"If I get murdered in the city
Go read the letter in my desk
Don't bother with all my belongings
Just pay attention to the list
Make sure my sister knows I love her
Make sure my mother knows the same
Always remember there was nothing worth sharing, like the love that let us
Share a name
Always remember there was nothing worth sharing, like the love that let us
Share a name"

As he finished the song and his dish, he was looking at Izami once again. He served the dish to Ms. Young. He was sure to beat Yukihira this time!

"Both this dessert and your singing were lovely, Takumi! Good job," Ms. Young complimented him, and he preened under the praise. Whoever was up next would have a hard time trying to top his performance. Speaking of which...

"Time to choose the next vict-er, performer!" Ms. Young announced, and the room bubbled with anticipation.

Chapter Text

Ms. Young spun around a few more times until her finger finally fell upon...Erina!

Soma chuckled before teasingly calling out, "So the great Nakiri has to sing her song now! Good luck!"

Erina huffed, but made her way to the front of the classroom and whispered her song choice to the teacher. Ms. Young seemed excited for this one too. As she set up the music, Erika prepared her cooking station. The song began to play as soon as she was ready, and she started to sing in a soft voice, slowly getting louder over time.

"Why should I play this game of pretend
Remembering through a second-hand
sorrow?
'Such a great son and wonderful friend'
Oh, don't the tears just pour"

There was clear sarcasm in her voice as she continued, beginning to chop and dice her ingredients.

"I could curl up and hide in my room
There in my bed, still sobbing tomorrow
I could give in to all of the gloom
But tell me, tell me what for?"

Her voice soared higher as she continued her cooking and prepared her dish.

"Why should I play the grieving girl and
Lie, saying that I miss you
And that my world has gone dark without
your light?
I will sing no requiem...tonight"

As she put the first part of her dish in the oven, her voice deepened slightly, imitating the voice of a man. The class was held captive, enraptured by the story she sang in such a beautiful voice.

"I gave you the world, you threw it away
Leaving these broken pieces behind you
Everything wasted, nothing to say
So I will sing no requiem tonight"

Her voice suddenly leapt up, cutting off the end of her last phrase and startling a few students.

"I hear your voice and feel you near!
Within these words I finally find you
And now that I know that you are still
here
I will sing no requiem tonight
Why should I have a heavy heart,
Why should I say 'I'll keep you with me'
Why should I go and fall apart for you?
Why should I play the grieving girl and
Lie, saying that I miss you
And that my world has gone dark without
your light?
I will sing no requiem tonight"

At this, the music surged, and suddenly went almost silent as Erina's voice became clear. She pulled the first part of her dish out of the oven, whirling around and replacing it with the second part.

"'Cause when the villains fall,
The kingdoms never weep
No one lights a candle to remember
No, no one mourns at all
When they lay them down to sleep
So don't tell me that I didn't have it right
Don't tell me that it wasn't black and
white
Don't say it wasn't true,
After all you put me through,
That you were not the monster
That I knew"

Erina's voice softened again, and she put the finishing touches on her dish as the song wound down.

"'Cause I
Cannot play the grieving girl and
Lie,
Saying that I miss you and that my world
has gone dark...
I will sing no requiem
I will sing no requiem
I will sing no requiem...tonight
Oh, oh, oh, oh"

The room was silent as the song ended and Erina presented her dish to Ms. Young, who looked near tears with a content smile on her face.

"Well done, Ms. Erina! Both your cooking and your singing were impeccable! And a wonderful song as well, I'm impressed. I certainly hope the next contestant-uh, student, does as well as you have. Speaking of which, let's see who's next!"

As Ms. Young began the process of picking the next victim, Erina took her seat, but not before receiving praise from over half the class. Including Soma, which she seemed quite flustered by. Ms. Young finally started to spin again...
