"She was taller," Benio says after Present Mic lets them go to their respective arenas for the entry test. Katsuki looks down at her and frowns, and says nothing, stalking ahead through the crowd with his daemon following on stiff, offended legs.
"She was fucking taller," Benio repeats, louder, like she thinks he's ignoring her on purpose. Which. What does she think.
"The fuck she was." Katsuki knows what, who she's talking about. He doesn't want to know, but he does.
Benio is about eye level with Yuina. She probably also knows what she's talking about.
Maybe the shitty fainting mini-steak on the hoof just decided to stand up properly today. Maybe Katsuki and Benio have other shit to think about, like the tournament, and other shit not to think about, like needing to be fucking saved by a fucking useless quirkless mook and his fucking fainting goat, the biggest joke of the animal kingdom bar none.
"No matter," Benio says with a disgusted snort, and digs her claws and teeth in his pants (and his leg underneath, that bitch) to climb her laborious way up to his shoulder.
When they're summoned to the school director's office to be told that both of them passed, he knows it for sure.
Because when he catches Midoriya by the collar to snarl in his face, Benio opening her maw wide to screech her fury at point blank range, Yuina doesn't freeze and topple over.
She tosses her head back in a clatter of nervous hooves, eyes showing white in fright -- and then she headbutts Benio in the face.
It's only been the most predictable thing about startling Midoriya -- either one of them -- ever since she settled. Deku will stammer himself into a total mess, and Yuina will fall over like a block of wood, legs ridiculously stiff. Every. Single. Time.
Katsuki doesn't want and come out and ask his hangers-on, but he hears nobody talking about it either. She has the same coat pattern of brown and white splotches and her horns are -- mostly -- the same shape -- bigger, and nobody says anything, like it's totally fucking normal for a daemon to change fucking species after they have fucking settled already.
And he's pretty fucking sure she has settled. There have been a lot of mudholes and gutters and thorn bushes she wouldn't have fallen into if she could have flitted into a bird shape or something a bit more likely to keep its balance under stress. So what gives?
"At least she's still a steak on the hoof," Benio says.
"Mm," Katsuki says.
"... I can still take her."
"... Mm," Katsuki says, and for the first time he acknowledges that -- maybe not.
Fainting or not, goats do have muscle power to be boosted by a quirk. Tasmanian devils don't sweat much.
Benio could still tear her throat or belly out with a single snap of her maw. She could. Goats are made for blunt impacts, and sure that could break a lot of bones backed up with that ridiculous new fucking quirk, but.
Benio could kill her -- if she got the drop on Midoriya Yuina there would be a moment of surprise and then it'd be curtains, it's not even a question.
Could she win?
"I hate them," Katsuki and Benio growl under their breath, and stand up to go explode some trashcans.
