Chapter Text

Yeah. So first of all, The Winter Soldier undoubtedly comes prepared to kick your ass. He’s not going to find himself without a weapon. The thing is, even if he does somehow blaze through the frankly astonishing amount of accoutrements he arrays on his person, he’s still not going to find himself without something that will kill you. Even if his arm is put out of service (or blown off, RIGHT TONY) he’s not going to be without something that will kill you.

Let’s talk about his actual weaponry first, though. That seems like the only way to keep this even remotely on the rails. And of his weaponry, I’ll start with the ones that show up in his ‘standard’ uniform. He appears to walk around with 4 guns, and 4 knives strapped to himself. Oh, and a handful of grenades, as you do.

First off, his gear is all modified, but it’s based in real tac gear. His boots are Bates GX-8 Side Zip with Gore-Tex. His goggles are Rothco Ventec Tactical Goggles. His pants are 5.11 Tactical Twill TDU Pants. The rest? That shit’s some Hydra seamstress mumbling about leather and kevlar in a basement somewhere.

COP 357 Derringer
Intratec TEC-38

He keeps these two on his right thigh. These are both what you would classify as a derringer, and they’re pretty much used solely as backup guns. The Intratec is only a 2-shot .38 caliber. The COP is a 4-shot .357. Both of those rounds will fuck you up but good, but this is definitely a last stand type of weapon, or if you’re only facing 2-6 opponents, naturally. I mean … both weapons are heavy frames, so I suppose you could take out two more opponents with a nice toss? He pulls at least one of these at the end of the causeway fight, after he ‘who the hell is Bucky’s’ Steve. He might pull both of them, since he gets knocked down between aiming the two times he does. Just showing that these are his last resort in a fight.

Glock 17

The Glock 17 is a 17 round 9x19mm, used a lot by law enforcement. This is the one he keeps on his left thigh. I think. He also has a SIG-Sauer hidden in there somewhere and I cannot tell where he keeps the second one. He pulls the Glock out during the causeway fight when he’s firing at Steve after his Skorpion has run out of rounds, which is why I’m pegging it as the left thigh holster gun.

SIG-Sauer P220

Yeah boy, the SIG is a good gun, people. It’s a 7 round .45mm. It was originally also offered in a 9mm, which I suppose it could be if he held onto his weapons with any regularity (he does not appear to do this. like at all). There’s also a 10mm model, but it wasn’t offered until 2015, so that’s not this. This is the final gun he pulls out to shoot Steve on the helicarrier. A .45 to center mass, man … jfc Steven.

Sa. Vz. 61 Skorpion

This is the .32 caliber Submachine-gun he keeps at his back. It appears to be his first pull in the fight, but he doesn’t keep it there all the time. The harness is obviously removable, and he’s not wearing it when he confronts Fury, while wearing the leather jacket. So this is like his … fancy dress gun idk.

Gerber Mark II
Benchmade SOCP 176BK

He keeps both these knives in the same holster, right there under his grenade (hi 40mm grenade!) The Mark II. Oh my god I love this knife. I have this knife. It is amazing. It has a 6.5 inch double-edged spear-point blade, and it is not easy to handle this thing the way he does. Be suitably impressed.

The Benchmade … actually you know what, I have this knife too. I might have a problem. Anyway. This one is a 3.22″ blade which has a hole at the end of the handle that you can slip a finger through, meaning you can hold onto the knife while picking up other objects. Which is kind of awesome in a fight.

Gerber Yari II Tonto

He has two of these at the small of his back. This is a 4.24″ partially serrated blade. The Tanto blade, meaning that the tip is shaped like a chisel, acts like a sword, essentially, and a Tanto blade is incredibly strong. Which is probably why it’s the one that opens up a car like a can opener, come on.

……you know what, I think I have one of these, too…..

What strikes me about the weapons he’s chosen to keep closest to him is that they’re all different makes and models, save for the Gerber knives. Most weapons-oriented people tend to have a favorite, and I think it’s apparent which one is his. Gerber is a good choice, they make a damn fine blade.

Non-Standard Weaponry

MK 13 Mod 0 Grenade Launcher

In his first appearance - and I do mean appearance because the Winter Soldier doesn’t waltz into your sightlines, he just appears already there and pointing a gun at you - he’s holding a MK 13 (pronounced Mark 13) Mod 0 grenade launcher configured as a stand-alone launcher with a telescopic buttstock. This thing has obviously been modified by Hydra with that magnetic boom thing, so I’m not sure I really need to get into its stats, do I? I guess the only important thing to note is that thing weighs almost 6 pounds, unloaded.

Needless to say, that is not a real world weapon … yeah. I’m not going to try to parse Hydra weapons, okay, I’m not that crazy yet. Carrying on.

Barret M107A1

You don’t actually see this one very well, but it’s the sniper rifle he uses to make Nick Fury a Holy Man. He’s seen holding it in the concept art and/or promos for The Winter Soldier. And I guess he just leaves it on the roof, fuck that thing. I’ve seen this listed as an M82 but the M82 has actually been reclassified as the M107, and production of both ceased before 2011, turning the new model into the M107A1, which is why I went with it. It’s a a .50 caliber, shoulder-fired, semi-automatic sniper rifle with a 4.5–14×50 Mark 4 scope and suppressor. He makes this shot using thermal imaging on his scope, which ain’t standard, if you feel me. Also sidenote, Nick Fury got up and sashayed his way into Shield like a week or something after taking two .50 cals and some drywall to the midsection.

Shit The Winter Soldier Is Handed

Milkor MGL

MGL stands for Multiple Grenade Launcher, and this one will launch 6 40mm grenades fired like a revolver. It’s meant for small squads carrying maximum firepower. It’s taking a grenade launcher to a gun fight, essentially.

Colt M4A1 Rifle with a M203 Grenade Launcher

This is an M4 Carbine that is capable of firing in semi-auto and fully automatic modes. It is indeed made to mount two different types of grenade launcher, the M203 being one of them. It’s an under barrel, single shot 40mm grenade launcher. This thing is why he carries the 40mm grenades on his utility belt, so it’s probably a favorite.

That’s it for his standard tac. But that isn’t it. Because The Winter Soldier is just as Extra as Sergeant Barnes was, okay.

First and foremost is his fucking metal arm.

It obviously has many uses.

It’s gone now, though, fuck Tony Stark, long live Wakanda. Moving on. There’s also his obvious super strength. They’ve taken care to show us that he is not simply a dude with a metal arm.

He appears to be evenly matched with both Captain America and Spiderman, who are the only two we have stats on. Meaning 4x the metabolism, ect, of Steve. And 3,000 pounds at 40 mph, from Tony’s analysis of Peter. I am not capable of parsing what that equates to in strength but I bet someone has. He also outmatches a (probably compromised) Iron Man suit.

And perhaps most devastatingly, there is his ability to think on his feet and use his surroundings. This is where he veers into Bucky territory. The Winter Soldier was handed things. Bucky just fucking takes shit.

[Edited to add after the IW spoiler season passed!] New data is very important in a scientific study……..

It’s not just that he uses the blunt objects of his surroundings. Anyone can do that. He also uses the surroundings themselves, showing his skill as a tactician, as seen brilliantly in the scene in his apartment. Every object in there was positioned perfectly to be used for defense.

Mattress at the largest window, where they’d make entry

Table that is sized perfectly to wedge itself into the only doorway into the apartment.

Bookcases made with cinderblocks. And rugs set under the windows like a damn trap door. Even the one thing he hadn’t expected to be in the apartment was useful!

(Sidenote. I think this was a twofold action on his part. It did the job, took care of the gun. But these people weren’t shooting at Steve. And as long as Steve was clinging to Bucky, he would continue to be under fire unnecessarily. If you throw Steve out the window, he’s no longer being fired upon! It also served as LISTEN, PAL, so. Threefold, maybe?)

I figure I’ve fallen completely into a pit of procrastination, so I’m taking requests at this point.
