“What if I don’t make it?” Jungkook asked for the millionth time that day.
“Then we go home, prepare some more, and come try again. But I know you are going to make it Kookie. They would be stupid not to have you.” Taehyung said, squeezing Jungkook’s hand.
“You have to say that, you are my best friend.”
“Doesn’t make what I said any less true. You need to believe in yourself Kookie. I know you have all the confidence, you just need to use it!”
Before Jungkook could say anything back, his name was called.
“Good luck Kookie! I know you will do great!” Taehyung said, giving his signature boxy grin.
Of course, Kim Taehyung was right and Jungkook was accepted into BigHit on his first try. Taehyung was so proud of his best friend. Jungkook was over the moon, excited that his dream was finally coming true. He even counted himself lucky that he had his best friend behind him for support every step of the way.
“Have fun, make friends! This is going to be so great for you!” Taehyung said on the day Jungkook was going to be moving into the dorm. He kept a brave face on because he knew how important this was to Jungkook, but deep inside he couldn’t help but feel a bit lost.
On the one hand, he was so excited for and proud of Jungkook for following his dreams and taking the first step to success. On the other hand, however, he felt almost sad. He felt like he was losing his best friend. Jungkook promised to stay in touch, but Taehyung knew things would inevitably change.
“I just hope they will like me, the new guy coming in.” Jungkook said, worry in his voice.
“They will love you! Just be yourself and everything will be fine.” Taehyung said.
“I can’t believe this is really happening. It all feels like a dream!” Jungkook rambled.
When Jungkook finally worked up the courage to look at Taehyung, really look at him, he could see the sadness lurking in his eyes. He knew Taehyung better than anyone and he could see how hard Taehyung was working to hide his feelings from Jungkook.
Jungkook pulled Taehyung into a hug. He buried his face into Taehyungs hair and took a deep breath.
“Hey, I know that you think that this means our friendship will be over, but I promise you that you will ALWAYS be my best friend! No matter what! Nothing will change that.” Jungkook said quietly into Taehyung’s ear.
Taehyung was too overcome with emotions so all he could do was nod and clutch onto Jungkook with all his might.
Jungkook placed a kiss on Taehyung’s forehead, then climbed into his car and drove off, waving to Taehyung until he turned the corner.
Fast forward a year later and Taehyung is working at a restaurant as a waiter on the weekends and a full time student on the weekdays. He is one semester away from graduation.
His daily routine consists of getting up, going to class, hanging out with his best friends, and then going to sleep. Same thing, different day. He moved in with his best friend, Park Jimin, and spends most of his time with him and Min Yoongi. Min Yoongi and Jimin also happened to be dating.
Jungkook had debuted as a solo act, releasing two mini albums within his first year of debut. His days consist of practice, interviews, studio time, and performances. He eats when he finds the time, same with sleep. He spends time at the dorm, mostly alone either writing new music, or just escaping the constant noise that his life has turned into.
Kim Taehyung and Jeon Jungkook have not seen each other in almost a year. They haven’t spoken in at least 6 months.
Jimin is the only one who knows that Taehyung and Jungkook were once best friends and Taehyung had always intended to keep it that way. He didn’t want to be that person that bragged that he once knew that famous idol. No one would believe him, and he didn’t want to deal with the attention if someone did believe him.
Taehyung followed Jungkook’s career from afar, always making sure he knew when he was releasing new music and streaming it to help with ratings. Jimin was by his side the whole time, a shoulder to cry on when needed, a voice of reason when the situation called for it.
One day, Jimin came home to Taehyung sitting in their living room, stock still, which was unheard of for the man.
“Tae? I’m home. Are you ok?” Jimin said sitting beside Taehyung.
“Oh, hey Jiminie-hyung. I’m ok. I thought you had a date with Yoongi-hyung tonight and you wouldn’t be home…” Taehyung replied, almost in a trance.
“I forgot something here, plus Yoongi-hyung is running late in the studio anyways. Typical. Now, what is bothering you?”
“I said I’m fine.”
Jimin leveled Taehyung with one of his “don’t play games with me” looks.
Taehyung sighed and moved to lay his head on Jimin’s shoulder.
“It’s stupid, I really shouldn’t be reacting like this.”
“Tae, please just tell me.”
“He’s coming here. He’s coming back here. Apparently his company felt like he needed a rest and where better to rest than your hometown right?” Taehyung rambled.
“Who’s coming here?” Jimin asked confused.
Jimin tensed next to Taehyung. He brought Taehyung closer.
“See, I told you it was stupid. It’s not like I would see him just because he’s here. I mean its not like this is some really small town. I’m sorry for being such a baby about this, you need to get ready for your date night. Have fun!” Taehyung said, making to sit up but Jimin only held him tighter to his side.
“You are not being stupid or a baby, Tae. He was your best friend for most of your life, and then he just disappeared on you. He’s been gone so you haven’t had to face him but now he will be back. There is a real chance you may have to see him, deal with him for the first time in a long time. And forget about date night, I’m staying with you.” Jimin said.
“This is exactly why I didn’t want to tell you! You would drop everything to deal with my mess and I don’t want that. Please, don’t not go out with your boyfriend because your best friend can’t seem to get his emotions under control. I will be fine, I just needed a good rant.” Taehyung insisted.
“Ok, so I lied. I knew all about Jungkook coming back here. I knew what it would do and when I called Yoongi-hyung he cancelled before I could even say anything. There will be plenty more date nights, this is something you need your best friend for.” Jimin said pulling Taehyung back into his side.
Taehyung couldn’t say anything, overcome with emotion.
“I don’t deserve friends like you guys.” Taehyung blubbers.
“I know, we are absolute angels. That is besides the point though, because whether you deserve us or not, you are stuck with us.” Jimin said, placing a kiss on Taehyung’s temple.
Taehyung just cried softly into Jimin’s neck.
They spent the rest of the night eating pizza and watching their favorite drama. They fell asleep cuddling on the couch.
The next morning, they woke up and agreed that they weren’t going to focus on Jungkook anymore. They went along with their daily routine, Jimin off to his job at the dance studio and Taehyung off to his job at the restaurant.
The day dragged on for Taehyung, who was still exhausted from the emotional night before. Once his shift was over, Taehyung dragged himself back to his apartment and collapsed onto the couch. He fell asleep almost immediately.
He was woken up a few hours later to knocks on his door. None of his friends ever knocked anymore, all having their own spare keys. Taehyung was considering if he wanted to answer, but then the knocking stopped.
Taehyung settled back down onto the couch, letting sleep take over again, but then his phone began to ring.
Taehyung let out a heavy sigh, and answered the phone without checking the caller i.d.
“Whoever this is, you are disturbing my well deserved nap and would like to kindly ask you to leave me the hell alone.” Taehyung answered, words slurred with sleep.
“Tae?” an all too familiar voice asked. One that Taehyung was surprised at how well he still knew it after going so long not hearing it directed at him.
“I’m sorry I don’t know who this is and I would appreciate if you don’t call me anymore.” Taehyung said and hung up.
His phone kept ringing after that, over and over again.
After the sixth time, he answered.
“Listen, stop calling me! I don’t know you, I don’t want to know you, and I sure as hell don’t want to hear anything you have to say dammit!” Taehyung exclaimed into the phone.
“Oookkk, well when my best friend Taehyung returns, can you please let him know that one Park Jimin is looking for him?” Jimin said, confusion and worry in his voice.
“Oh, Jimin-hyung. I’m so sorry, but I thought you were someone else…”
“Clearly…who did you think I was?” Jimin asked.
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” Taehyung replied.
“Tae, just tell me. If that was how they make you react, I need to know whose ass I have to go kick.”
“Chim-Chim come on now. We all know violence is never the answer. It was Jungkook.” Tae reluctantly admits.
“WHAT?!? Jungkook as in Jeon Jungkook, former best friend, and all around asshole?!” Jimin ranted.
“What other Jungkook would make me react like that?”
“Don’t be short with me. I’m on my way home now, Yoongi’s coming over.”
“Ok, I will be vacating the premises then. Thanks for the heads up.” Taehyung said.
“No! No, it’s nothing like that. He was worried about you and wanted to just chill out. Maybe have a drink or two?”Jimin replied.
“I don’t need babysitters Jimin-hyung.”
“It’s best friends hanging out. No babysitting Tae.”
“Fine, I’m going to run out and get some fresh air. I will be back soon and then we can hang out.” Tae said, a defeated sigh coming out of his mouth.
“There’s my good boy, I will see you soon Tae Tae.”
“Bye Chim Chim.”
Taehyung slipped on his shoes, made sure he had his phone and keys, and then walked out of his apartment. He wasn’t sure where he was going but he decided to just take a walk and see where he ended up. He needed some time to think.
Taehyung knew there was a very real possibility he would see Jungkook at some point. Not only because they would be in the same city at the same time, but their families were still close and it was inevitable to run into each other at a dinner or some family event. At least in those situations Taehyung could have prepared himself to see him.
What he really didn’t expect was for Jungkook to just show up at his apartment, let alone know where he lived in the first place.
Before Taehyung even realized where he was headed, he found himself in the park close by his apartment. He sat on one of the benches and closed his eyes, face tilted upwards towards the sky. He was sitting there for a few minutes when he felt someone sit next to him. He didn’t open his eyes. It was a public bench and the person wasn’t sitting too close to him or anything.
After a few more moments of silence, the stranger decided to speak.
“Tae.” the stranger started with, voice strained, nervous sounding.
Taehyung’s eyes sprung open.
“Jungkook.” Taehyung responded, refusing to look over at Jungkook.
“So you do remember me then.” Jungkook said, trying to lighten the tension between them.
“I do, but I wish I didn’t. What do you want Jungkook? I thought I made myself clear that I am perfectly fine with you staying gone from my life.” Taehyung said, finally sparing a glance at Jungkook.
He looked the same yet different. He had definitely grown up but he still had his adorable bunny-like teeth and he had the same look in his eyes he always had when looking at Taehyung.
“I wanted…I want, to talk. I know I haven’t been that great of a best friend-“
“You haven’t been a friend at all! I haven’t spoken to you in six months, I haven’t seen you in twice that amount of time! I get that you have a whole new shiny life, but I never thought you would forget about me so easily!”
“I never forgot about you Tae Tae.” Jungkook said, voice firm, almost angry sounding.
“Don’t call me that. Only my best friends are allowed to call me that and last time I checked, you aren’t one of them. Jungkook, I know being an idol would make it hard to see me or speak to me often, I understand that. You have an amazing life, I follow your music. I know how great you have been doing. But, thats all I am now. A fan. I have a new life now too you know.”
“I know, I went to your mom and dad’s house when I first got home to try to see you there. Then they told me you had moved in with someone named Jimin?” Jungkook said.
“Yes, I moved in with my best friend Jimin-hyung. And I go to University, which I will be graduating from in a month. I work at a restaurant on the weekends. I spend my time in class, at work, or with Jimin-hyung and our friends. I live a pretty normal life, boring maybe, but its good enough for me.” Taehyung says.
“Your life doesn’t sound boring. It sounds wonderful. Sometimes I wonder if I would be better off never trying out.” Jungkook said quietly.
“Don’t you dare say that! How dare you say that?! If you say that then I lost the most important person in my life for nothing! You have to love you life because then I can go on with mine.” Taehyung ranted.
“What if I can’t say that? I promised you I would never lie to you.”
“You broke a lot of other promises you made me. Why should I care?” Taehyung asked, bitterness in his tone.
Jungkook looked down, twiddling his thumbs.
“I can’t ask you to care, I can’t ask you to even give me a moment more of your time. But I had hoped you would. Let’s just say its for old times’ sake?” Jungkook asked, glancing at Taehyung with hopeful eyes.
Taehyung took a good long look at the person he once knew better than he knew himself. His eyes were tired, dark circles evident when Taehyung took the time to really look. His face was paler than it ever was and he looked thinner too.
Taehyung sighed and looked at the time on his phone. There were no texts from Jimin or Yoongi yet so he hadn’t been gone long enough for them to worry just yet.
“You have about 15 minutes before Jimin or Yoongi-hyung start to panic and look for me.” Taehyung said.
“Ok, I can work with 15 minutes. I will tell the short version of the story and if you are still intrigued at the end of it, we can meet up again for the more detailed version. Deal?”
“Deal, though I highly doubt that I will want to meet again. But do continue.” Taehyung quipped.
As mad and hurt as Taehyung was, he couldn’t help but be a little curious.
“Well you know all about how I got to be in BigHit. Things were new and exciting for a long time. I was so happy. Making music, finally getting to be on music shows and meeting all my inspirations. I missed certain things about my old life of course, the people I left behind mostly, but I figured that was normal. Then it wasn’t so fun anymore. I had to watch every word I said, I couldn’t say anything or share anything on social media without it being approved first. Then I didn’t have any choice in who I could contact, or be friends with. They took my phone, they tweeted and instagramed for me. I even had to date who they told me to. I guess I was lucky because they wanted me to appear available to all my fans but still, I didn’t get to choose who I could flirt with. Tae, they made me feel ashamed to be who I am! They made me feel dirty for being who I am.” Jungkook said, tears brimming at his eyes.
“What do you mean, hide who you are?” Taehyung asked.
“I-I’m gay Taehyung. But according to my management team, thats wrong. They tried setting me up with girls but it never felt right.” Jungkook said, a tear slipping out.
Taehyung just sat in his own silent pain. He was so conflicted. He was still so angry and hurt that Jungkook cut him out of his life, but then here Jungkook was saying it wasn’t by his choice.
“There is nothing wrong with being gay Jungkook. I can promise you that. You should be free to love whoever makes you happy. I’m sorry that you had to go through that.” Taehyung said.
Jungkook just sniffled next to him.
“I don’t deserve your kindness Tae. I was a horrible friend. I was a horrible person. I should have fought harder against them banning me from talking to you.”
“That’s what I don’t understand. Why was I someone they banned you from talking to? I mean, we were just best friends.”
“That explanation would be in the longer version of the story.” Jungkook said quietly.
Taehyung just stared at Jungkook, until his phone started to buzz. He looked down to find a text from Jimin.
TaeTae where are youuu?? Do Yoongi-hyung and I have to come looking for you??
No! I’m fine. I will head home soon, have a movie ready for me. I may be bringing someone….
Tae, I don’t think hooking up with a random stranger is a good idea to get over Jungkook is the answer here.
Its not some random person!! I will be back soon.
“Jimin?” Jungkook asked when Taehyung looked back up from his phone.
“Yeah…he’s looking for me. He worries. Look, I should go.”
“Yeah, yeah. I am glad I got to see you again Tae. Thank you for giving me even just 15 minutes, I don’t deserve it.” Jungkook said standing up and offering a sad smile to Taehyung.
“You can come, if you want to…I mean its just a movie night. You look exhausted. I also may be interested in the longer version of your story as well. But for now, come and watch a movie with us.” Taehyung said, reaching a hand out to Jungkook.
Jungkook stood in shock for a few moments before he grasped Taehyung’s hand.
“I should warn you, Jimin-hyung may not be the most welcoming person. I will do my best to deflect what may be coming your way.” Taehyung warned, standing outside of his door.
Jungkook just nodded his head.
“Honey, I’m home!” Taehyung called as he led Jungkook inside.
“About time you punk. Jimin was just getting ready to send out a search party.” Yoongi said coming into view, eyes widening when he saw who Taehyung was with.
Before Taehyung could do anything, Yoongi was launching himself at Jungkook. He had him slammed against the door when Jimin rounded the corner asking what all the ruckus was about.
“ChimChim…now wait just a second.” Taehuyung said, hoping to soften Jimin with his nickname.
“What the hell is he doing here?!” Jimin yelled.
“Well, you see-Yoongi-hyung, please kindly let Jungkook breathe.” Taehyung said when he noticed Yoongi still had not released him.
Yoongi reluctantly let Jungkook go and moved to stand protectively in front of Taehyung.
Taehyung rolled his eyes. He loved his friends but this was getting a bit ridiculous.
“If you would let me explain. Jungkook happened upon me in the park. We talked. He is here to watch the movie and then after that, we will talk some more. I promise I will let you both know what I can later. For now, please let him be.”
“Let him be?! He was the reason you cried yourself to sleep all those nights! He’s the reason that I had to put you back together again. I swear, if I have to do it again…”
“You won’t!” Jungkook finally spoke up.
Everyone just looked at Jungkook in shock.
“I-I mean I don’t plan on hurting him again. I didn’t plan on it last time either…” Jungkook mumbled.
“Well it’s settled then! What movie are we watching?” Taehyung said, stepping out from behind Yoongi. He walked over to Jungkook, grabbed his hand and led him to the couch.
Yoongi and Jimin shared a look and then followed them, sitting on the loveseat.
“We were thinking we would let you choose.” Jimin said.
“Would-would you mind if I chose TaeTae?” Jungkook asked.
“No, go ahead.” Taehyung replied, not correcting Jungkook’s use of the nickname this time.
Jungkook sent him a gentle smile and went to look through the DVDs.
Jimin and Yoongi sent incredulous looks at Taehyung.
“I promise I will explain everything, but for now just know I am ok and he really means no harm.” Taehyung said, sending the most reassuring smile he could their way.
Jungkook returned at that point and sat next to Taehyung, but kept a respectable distance between them.
“Which movie did you choose?” Taehyung asked.
“It’s a surprise.” Jungkook answered with a grin.
When they all looked at the screen, the opening scenes of The Lion King were playing.
Jungkook and Taehyung shared a soft smile.
Yoongi and Jimin fell asleep about halfway through the movie and Jungkook looked like he was almost there as well.
Taehyung shut the T.V. off. He got up and woke Yoongi who then somehow managed to get himself and Jimin to Jimin’s room half asleep.
Taehyung then turned to Jungkook, who was trying to keep his eyes open.
“So, I was planning on asking you to tell me the longer version tonight but you are obviously exhausted.” Taehyung said with a chuckle.
“I can stay up.” Jungkook slurred, sleep in his words. He sat up straight to try to wake himself up.
“It’s really fine, let’s just get you to bed. Come on, my room is this way.” Taehyung said, pulling jungkook up off the couch.
Jungkook followed Taehyung quietly down the hall.
Once in the room, Taehyung moved to his closet.
“You’ve grown like a weed, I don’t know if I have anything that will fit you perfectly but try these.” Taehyung said handing over a pair of sweatpants and a white T-shirt.
“Thanks, uhmm, can I use the bathroom?” Jungkook asked.
“Oh, yes of course! Right across the hall.” Taehyung said.
Jungkook thanked him with a smile, and then made his way into said bathroom.
Taehyung took that time to get changed. His thoughts were spinning. There was still a lot of hurt between him and Jungkook but he could sense that Jungkook wasn’t lying when he said that everything that happened wasn’t completely by his own choice.
Jungkook reappeared in the doorway.
“Hey, I’m just gonna go sleep on the couch-“
“No, just sleep in here.”
“Tae, it’s been a long day, maybe it would be best to just give each other some space now.”
“Dammit Kookie, we haven’t seen each other in a year! I want to know this is real.” Taehyung exclaimed.
Jungkook just looked at Taehyung with his wide eyed stare.
“You…you called me Kookie…” Jungkook whispered.
“It just slipped out. Sorry.” Taehyung said, an embarrassed blush coming across his cheeks.
“No, don’t apologize! You don’t know how long I have waited to hear that, how much I missed hearing it.”
“I think I may have a slight idea.”
“True. Ok, I will stay in here. Since you asked so nicely.” Jungkook said, with his signature smirk in place.
Jungkook closed the door behind him and then walked over to the bed. He took a pillow and put it on the ground.
“Do you have any extra blankets?” Jungkook asked.
“You are not sleeping on the floor.” Taehyung said firmly, picking the pillow back up and throwing it on the bed.
“Tae, I really don’t think that sharing a bed is a good idea.” Jungkook said.
“Kookie, I refuse to be the reason you have a bad back and can’t perform at your best. Do you know how many death threats I would get from your crazed fans?” Taehyung replied.
Jungkook just chuckled. He let out a long sigh.
“How do you always win?” Jungkook grumbled as he climbed into the bed.
“Because I am the best and you love me.” Taehyung replied, on autopilot.
Both froze and looked at each other with wide eyes.
“S-sorry. It just slipped out. I guess old habits die hard, huh?” Taehyung said, trying to ease the tension.
“Look, I know its been a long time and things change. People change, they grow up, grow apart. I didn’t mean to make it seem like things are still like that between us.” Taehyung said.
“But, they haven’t changed. I do still love you Taehyung. Just not in the way you think.” Jungkook said, voice shaking.
“What do you mean Kookie?” Taehyung said.
“Promise me you won’t hate me. Well, not anymore than you already do.” Jungkook said looking down at his hands tangled in his lap.
He jumped slightly, surprised to see Taehyung’s hand covering his.
“I don’t hate you Jungkook. I was hurt, so goddamn hurt. I was so hurt I didn’t want to look deeper into the situation, just wanted to place all the blame on you. But, earlier today, when you mentioned some things were out of your control; it made me curious. Can you maybe explain it to me?” Taehyung said gently.
“When I first got into BigHit, I was on top of the world. You know how much it all meant to me. Saying goodbye to you was the hardest part of it, but I truly believed that no matter the distance, I would still have my best friend in my corner. Things were fine at first. They didn’t let me have my phone the first few weeks but I kind of expected that. I went through all different types of training. Vocal lessons, dance practice. Then there was the media training. They told me what was ok for me to say and what wasn’t. It wasn’t anything too bad at first. But then they kept really pushing that I keep everything I say gender neutral but at the same time, I had to make it clear I was heterosexual. When I told them I wasn’t, they said that was fine behind closed doors but I can’t let the general public know. I got my phone back only when they were sure I wouldn’t out myself. I was so happy and I was about to call you when they stopped me. They said I could call my family only. Ok, fine I thought. Baby steps towards the freedom I wanted. Then I noticed that they had changed your contact name in my phone. I used to have it saved as ‘My TaeTae<3’ but they had changed it to just Kim Taehyung. When I confronted them about it, they said that if my phone information got leaked, they wouldn’t be able to save face if it looked like I had a boyfriend. That was when they said they thought it would be best if I just began to distance myself from you. They made it seem like that would be what was best for you as well. That fans would hurt you out of jealousy and that you wouldn’t have any privacy anymore. I didn’t want to put you in any kind of danger. So I went along with it. Before I knew it we hadn’t spoken in six months. By that point, I just figured you wouldn’t want to see me. I kept myself busy with practice, performances, interviews. But the whole time, you were still there in the back of my mind. I started to hate myself.”
“Kookie-“ Taehyung said, pain evident in his voice.
“No, let me finish. I hated that I let them control me, I hated that I was acting as if everything was just fine. Most of all, I hated myself for hurting you. I tried to sneakily contact you a few times but they always caught me. It started to take its toll. My voice started to give out, my dancing was getting sloppy. To avoid any embarrassment, the company told me to take time off. I asked them to come home, and was surprised they said yes. I guess they figured you had moved on or something. So here I am now, a pathetic asshole who can’t do anything to stop hurting the most important person I have ever met.” Jungkook finished.
Taehyung just sat in stunned silence, until Jungkook let out a heartbroken sob. He forgot about all the anger, all the hurt. No matter what had happened between them, this was his Kookie and he couldn’t stand to see him cry.
Taehyung gathered Jungkook into his arms, which was quite the feat seeing how much the boy had grown. Jungkook fell willingly into Taehyung. He nuzzled his face into the side of Taehyung’s neck and wound his arms around his waist.
Taehyung pulled him closer if that was even possible, and just rocked them back and forth until Jungkook seemed calm enough to listen to what Taehyung had to say.
“Can I talk now?” Taehyung asked gently, running his fingers through Jungkook’s hair. Jungkook nodded.
“I won’t lie to you, we always promised to be honest with each other. I thought I hated you for a little while. I was so hurt and so angry. I didn’t understand how things could change so drastically, so quickly. Even with all that, I still followed you. I streamed all of your music, I voted on music shows. As much as I didn’t want to see or hear you ever again, the bigger part of me needed to help you succeed any way that I could. It started to get to be a bit too much though, so I stopped. I met Jimin-hyung at school and we hit it off right away. He is the only person, well other than Yoongi-hyung now, who knows that you and I were best friends. Jimin put me back together, and I don’t know where I would be without him. I mean, I started to think there was something wrong with me. There had to be to make the one person I thought would be with me forever just leave me behind like that. It took a long time but Jimin got me to open up. He introduced me to Yoongi-hyung and Namjoon-hyung, although they don’t like it when I use the formalities. Things were getting better, I was happy. Then I heard you were coming back, and I panicked. I knew I would have to see you at some point, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so soon. And now here we are. There is one thing that I am still confused about though Kookie. I understand, even if I think its absolute bullshit, why BigHit would want to keep the fact you are gay out of the press. What I don’t understand is why they were trying to keep you from your best friend.” Taehyung finishes.
Jungkook was silent a few moments before tightening his hold on Taehyung.
“They kept us apart because while you are my best friend, and always will be, I loved-no love you in a different way.”
“What do you mean by a different way?” Taehyung asked, heart beginning to beat a bit faster.
Jungkook lifted himself up out of Taehyungs arms and looked into his eyes.
“I love you Taehyung. As in, I am in love with you.” Jungkook said, voice shaking.
Taehyung just stared.
“It’s ok if you don’t feel the same, in fact that would make sense. I am an awful friend and don’t deserve your love but I think you needed to know. They kept us apart because they didn’t want the possibility of a scandal coming out.”
“Kookie, you are in love with me?”
“Yes, always have been.”
“And you never thought to tell me?! Before you left, you never thought to let me know how you felt?! You are so dumb I can’t even believe this!” Taehyung exclaimed.
Jungkook looked down at his hands. He closed his eyes, willing himself to just take whatever Taehyung decided to dish out at him.
Before he knew what was happening, Taehyung’s fingers were under his chin, lifting his face. Taehyung’s lips were on Jungkook’s within mere seconds. Jungkook was too shocked to respond.
Taehyung pulled back and looked at Jungkook with the softest expressions.
“We could have fought them together this whole time you fool. I loved you, I still do. The same way you love me.”
“Well then why didn’t you say anything before?!” Jungkook cried.
“If I told you, would you have left?” Taehyung asked.
Jungkook thought about it for a moment before answering.
“I would like to say that I would, but I think that I would have stayed here to be with you.”
“Which is exactly why I didn’t tell you. I didn’t want to be the one reason that you didn’t follow your dream. You would have resented me eventually. All the what if’s would have killed you and we would have ended up hating each other.” Taehyung said, offering a sad smile.
“How could you possibly know that?! You never gave me the chance to make the choice for myself. All of this could have been avoided!” Jungkook exclaimed, anger creeping into his tone.
“I thought I was doing what I was supposed to do for the person that I loved! I didn’t want to hold you back! I wanted you to be happy!” Taehyung yelled.
“Well that worked out real well didn’t it!” Jungkook snapped. He got up off the bed and gathered his clothes, phone and keys.
“Where are you going?” Taehyung asked, voice quivering.
“I need some space. I’m sorry but I need some time alone.”
“Ok.” Taehyung said voice small.
Jungkook walked out of Taehyung’s room and then out of the apartment. Taehyung sat in shock.
A few minutes later, Jimin came into Taehyung’s room, sleep ruffled but concerned all the same. Silently he gathered Taehyung into his arms and carried him to his room.
Taehyung tried to leave, not wanting to disturb Jimin and Yoongi anymore than he already had, but as he made to get up an equally sleep ruffled Yoongi pulled Taehyung down and into his chest. Jimin crowded Taehyung’s front and nestled his face into his neck and tangled his legs with his.
“Don’t fight us on this. We are tired, need our sleep, and won’t be able to sleep unless you are with us. You know how Jimin worries.” Yoongi whispered in Taehyung’s ear, arm tightening around his waist.
“I’m sorry.” Taehyung mumbled, numbness beginning to take over.
“Oh no you don’t. Don’t you disappear on us now. I just need a good few hours’ sleep and then I am going to kick that bastard’s ass.” Jimin said.
“Don’t. It’s all a big misunderstanding. It’s my fault. It’s fine.” Taehyung murmurs, running his hand through Jimin’s hair and resting his free hand on Yoongi’s resting on his stomach.
“We’ll discuss this in the morning. Sleep.” Yoongi said. Jimin only made a sound of agreement, already more than halfway back to sleep from Taehyung’s hand in his hair.
Taehyung made no noise of agreement, but settled further into Yoongi and in doing so, Jimin nestled further into Taehyung.
When morning came, Taehyung had yet to sleep. He carefully untangled himself from Jimin and Yoongi, sighing in relief when they just shifted towards each other in his absence.
After grabbing his phone ad wallet, Taehyung left a note on the kitchen table, and made his way out of the apartment.
He needed to get some air and think about all that had happened between him and Jungkook the night before. His head was still spinning from all that Jungkook had told him, and also from the way Jungkook reacted to Taehyung’s confession.
Taehyung didn’t really know where he was heading specifically until he realized he was walking towards the park a few blocks away from his apartment again.
As he approached the park entrance, he heard a commotion coming from the hotel across the street.
“It’s really Jungkook! He’s really here!” a young girl, presumably a fan of Jungkook’s, shouted. Soon there was a crowd formed.
Taehyung just watched with wide eyes. After a few moments he shook himself out of his shocked state and with one last glance was about to turn to enter the park when he saw Jungkook trying to make his way through the crowd.
Jungkook began to head in his direction. Taehyung tried to turn around before Jungkook saw him, even putting his hood up, but he could see the moment Jungkook noticed him. Both stared wide eyed at the other, frozen in their spots.
Before Jungkook could say or do anything, Taehyung quickly turned and walked into the park, cursing his rotten luck. He half walked, half jogged, until the commotion was barely noticeable.
When he saw an empty bench he sat down. He rested his elbows on his knees and put his face in his hands.
Taehyung had been sitting there for a while, thoughts racing, when he felt someone sit next to him. This time, he knew who it was.
They sat in silence, neither one knowing what to say or if they wanted to be the one to break the silence.
After about fifteen minutes, Taehyung decided he’d had enough. With a long sigh Taehyung stood up and was about to walk away when he felt Jungkook wrap a hand around his wrist.
Taehyung looked down at Jungkook, who wouldn’t look him in the eye. Taehyung tried to tug his wrist away but Jungkook tightened his hold on his wrist.
They both stayed silent. Taeyhung sat back down, and again tugged his wrist away. Jungkook let it go this time. He turned his body towards Taehyung, and took a deep breath.
“I know you probably hate me now, more than ever.” Jungkook began.
Taehyung couldn’t hold back the bitter chuckle that left his lips.
“I wish I hated you. It would be so much easier.” Taehyung said looking down at his hands.
“Well I will selfishly say I am glad you don’t hate me. I do deserve it, though. I was a complete and utter asshole last night. I was just in shock that someone as amazing as you could see me in that way, and even still have those feelings for me after all the shit I put you through. Instead of dealing with it, I acted like a spoiled little brat and stormed out. I understand now, the reason you didn’t tell me how you felt about me. I would have stayed back with you. I would not have any of the opportunities that I have had up to now. They have been amazing experiences. That being said, I need to say one thing that will make me sound so unbelievably spoiled. As amazing as these experiences have been, I would trade them all in if that meant that I would have you by my side. Maybe you would be right, and I would eventually become resentful of missed opportunities. On the other hand, I could have been just as happy to stay here and be with you. The reason I got so mad was because I felt like you took the choice away from me.” Jungkook said, taking Taehyung’s hand at the end and threading their fingers together.
Taehyung just sat in silence thinking about everything that Jungkook just said. He let Jungkook play with his fingers, knowing that was one of his nervous habits when he was feeling anxious.
“I never thought of it that way, me taking a choice away from you. I was thinking of it as doing what was best. I didn’t think that YOU would want to be with me in that way. I just thought that I was doing what any person in love would do, let the one they love shine. I’m sorry for not giving you the chance to make your own choice, but I would never have forgiven myself for holding you back. No matter how many times you would tell me you chose it. I guess we both made bad choices.” Taehyung said, glancing at Jungkook for the first time.
Jungkook was already looking at Taehyung, and had moved closer to Taehyung while he had been speaking. He took his free hand and rested it on Taehyungs cheek.
“We can’t change what happened, but we can make sure that going forward we don’t make the same mistakes twice. Kim Taehyung, I love you. I am hopelessly and irrevocably in love with you. I don’t want to-no. I can’t lose you again. It is not going to be easy, and we are going to have to fight like hell. I am ready and willing to do that, if that means I get to have you by my side. I don’t want to hide, I am done with people telling me what to say and what to do. I want to be me. If that means my life as an idol is over, then so be it because I would have the most important part of my life with me in the end. I choose you, Kim Taehyung. I will ALWAYS choose you.” Jungkook said, his eyes never breaking away from Taehyung’s.
Before Taehyung could reply, Jungkook brought Taehyung’s face closer to his and placed a gentle kiss to his lips. They broke away and Taehyung rested his forehead against Jungkook’s.
“I am so gone for you Jungkook. Always have been and I imagine I always will be. I will fight with you if that is what you want. All I want or need is you. All I need is your love, your happiness, and your trust. I am in love with you Jeon Jungkook and I will do ANYTHING for you. I want forever with you.” Taehyung said before bringing their lips back together, this time in a kiss less gentle and more passionate.
They kissed for a few more minutes, until Jungkook broke away for air.
“As much as I want to continue this…”Jungkook began, trailing off with an almost apologetic look.
“We are out in public. This isn’t exactly the way you want to reveal everything. I get it it, it’s ok.” Taehyung said with a soft smile.
They sat together in comfortable silence for a few moments before Jungkook let out a long yawn.
“I don’t know about you but I didn’t get much sleep last night. How would you feel about coming back to my room for a nap?” Jungkook asked, standing and stretching.
“That sounds perfect.” Taehyung agreed quietly.
They made their way back to Jungkook’s hotel, hiding their faces and using the back entrance.
Once they reached his room, Jungkook swiped his key card into the door and wasted no time in slipping off his shoes, shirt and jeans so he was left in just his boxers. Taehyung chuckled at Jungkook’s haste. He closed the door behind him, after putting the do not disturb sign on the door handle. He slipped off his shoes, shirt and jeans and made his way over to the bed that Jungkook had face planted onto.
“Ok, if you stay starfished like that I won’t be able to join you, Kookie.” Taehyung said.
Jungkook shifted over with a groan.
As soon as Taehyung climbed into bed, Jungkook hooked one leg over both of Taehyung’s, threw an arm over his stomach, and nestled his face into Taehyungs neck. Taehyung brought one of his hands and began running his fingers through Jungkook’s hair. Jungkook let out a content sigh, and then Taehyung heard his breathes even out and knew he had fallen asleep. Taehyung dropped a final kiss to Jungkook’s forehead and fell asleep as well.
They would wake up a few hours later, Taehyung’s phone full of missed calls and texts from Yoongi and Jimin, demanding to know where he was and if he was ok. The last one, sent only a few minutes before they woke up threatened to get the police involved. After a phone call assuring them both he was safe, Taehyung promised to come back and explain everything. He convinced Jungkook to come with him, with a warning that he may not recieve a warm welcome.
Taehyung was right, the moment Jimin sees Jungkook on the doorway, he punches him straight at his nose. After a lot of shouting and Yoongi holding Jimin back, things calm down again. Over time, they become a very close group of four, to add three more to their family within a few years time. A fellow idol, Jung Hoseok or better known as J-Hope, Kim Namjoon, an underground rapper who helps J-Hope write some of his music, and Kim Soekjin. Boyfriend of Namjoon and eventually takes on the mother role for the rest of them.
Jungkook talked with BigHit and while they weren’t thrilled with the idea of him coming out, they didn’t want to lose his talent. Jungkook officially came out a month after he and Taehyung began dating. Instead of losing fans, he gained many more.
One night, Jungkook came by Taehyung’s apartment, exhausted after a day full of schedules. He opened the door with the key Taehyung had made for him, and found his boyfriend asleep on the couch.
Jungkook walked over to the couch, and looked fondly at Taehyung.
"Stop being a creep and carry him to his room. You look just about dead on your feet as well." Jimin said with a chuckle as he walked through to get to the kitchen.
"I'm not a creep when it is my boyfriend that I am looking at." Jungkook scoffed.
Taehyung woke up when he heard the two voices.
"Kookie? When did you get here?" Taehyung said, voice even deeper than normal from sleep.
"Just a few minutes ago, I was coming by to run something by you, but you are exhausted. Let's just get you to bed, ok?" Jungkook said, taking Taehyung's hand and pulling him up from the couch.
Still waking up, Taehyung stumbled into Jungkook, and just leaned into him, face hidden in his neck.
"What did you want to run by me?" Taehyung asked,
"We can talk about it tomorrow, once you are well rested." Jungkook said, trying to bring Taehyung into his room.
"You know I won't be able to sleep now with all the curiosity." Taehyung pouted pulling back to look Jungkook in the face.
"Ok, fair point. Let's talk in your room though." Jungkook said, planting a kiss on the tip of Taehyung's nose. Tehyung giggled, and began moving in the direction of his room.
"You two are gross." Jimin said, fondness clear in his voice.
"Like you and Yoongi-hyung are any better." Jungkook replied, sticking his tongue out in the direction of Jimin.
Taehyung just laughed and pulled Jungkook with him.
Once they were inside, Taehyung closed the door, and pulled Jungkook to sit beside him on the bed.
"Ok, spill." Taehyung said.
"Well. I know we haven't been together for long, but we have known each other for practically all our lives. I want to come home to you each night, and wake up to you every morning. Will you move in with me?" Jungkook asked.
"Of course I will!" Taehyung exclaimed, tackling Jungkook onto the bed, passionately kissing him.
After a few minutes, Jungkook broke away.
"I am so happy, you have no idea. I really am. I am also so tired, it hurts to keep my eyes open. Let's go to sleep now please." Jungkook slurred, already falling asleep with his face nestled in Taehyung's neck.
Taehyung just chuckled, planting a kiss on Jungkook's forehead before falling asleep along with him.
The next day they wasted no time in moving Taehyung into Jungkook's apartment. Jimin pretended to be upset, but Yoongi had a secret smile on his face the whole day.
