That year he’d waited for Hua Cheng, some nights he laid down on his simple bed and let his hands wander alongside his mind. He recalled how Hua Cheng’s hands had moved over his body, while his own feared to do much beyond clutch Hua Cheng’s shoulders. He wondered what he might do when Hua Cheng returned, imagined the puff of ghost breath on his bare skin, the cold fingers of the Ghost King skating down his limbs, and he shook under the weight of his imaginings, and each day he was filled with fresh tides of longing.
And now Hua Cheng had returned, and he felt butterflies rise in his stomach to choke his throat.
After a year of waiting, Xie Lian is reunited with Hua Cheng.

“And who is this?”
“Your new housekeeper.” Xie Lian cut in before Ban Yue could speak. “If you’ll have me.”
“I wondered why it was so bright in here.” The man grinned. Then his face fell into seriousness, or perhaps the mockery of it. “But you must know who I am?”
Xie Lian nodded.
“Aren’t you worried?” The man stepped closer to the table. “That I’ll eat your heart?”
Ban Yue huffed.
“I didn’t think Crimson Rain Sought Flower would be interested in my withered old heart,” Xie Lian responded.
A curse turns Xie Lian into an old man. He seeks out Crimson Rain Sought Flower, the heart-eating demon who lives in a moving castle, to help him.
