It’s the summer of 1987 and 20-year-old Steve Rogers has gotten the worst news he can ever imagine.
Brain cancer. Inoperable. Four months to live.
Unbeknownst to him, Bucky concocts a plan that’s even dumber than he is: drop out of NYU, clear out an entire college fund, and spend the next four months finally getting Steve outside of New York City. Two months to get to California, two months to get back home.
Better get busy living, or get busy dying.

Steve is back to what he'd naively thought would be the final act of a life well lived, but it doesn't take long to see that nothing will go according to plan. The world is crumbling faster than anyone can hope to pick up its pieces: with the clash of old and new politics vying for power and mass hysteria about the Returned taking sway in the global population, Steve feels simultaneously responsible for the mess and too tired to mend it. He's lived one time, two times, three: and made a conscious decision to leave the fight behind.
After a conspiracy orchestrated by a new fascist movement threatens his friends, he finds his desire for justice outweighs wishful thoughts about peace. Add to that the encouragements of his new neighbor, a plucky 98-years young psychoanalyst from Budapest, and Bucky's strange demeanor, he might have another mystery to solve before he can truly rest.
For that, he'll need a bit of what Bruce had gotten wrong while planning the Time Heist and – more importantly – an acceptance of the bizarre trajectory which was always his life, encapsulated in the words of a very wise woman who once told him: "All we can do is our best, and sometimes the best that we can do is to start over."

Final Report of the survey starship Hermes, Captain reporting. The other members of the crew, Dugan, Falsworth, Jones, Dernier, Morita are dead. Agent Peggy Carter survived, uninjured. Second Officer James Barnes remains in cryosleep due to life-threatening injuries. Cargo and ship destroyed. Our client, Johann Schmidt, executive curation officer for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation endangered the ship and crew while covertly attempting to smuggle a creature he referred to as The Hydra during our operation. Schmidt perished in his efforts. We should reach the Frontier in about 6 weeks. With a little luck, the Network will pick us up.
This is Steven Grant Rogers, one of three survivors of the Hermes, signing off.

Things have settled down in Steve's life. The team of Avengers is functioning, he has a lovely house in Brooklyn, and good friends to spend time with. Bucky is safe and free, well enough to get by on his own. In comparison, it should be a small thing that he hasn't wanted to spend any more time with Steve than he's had to over the last couple of years.
Steve should be happy, yet the winter has been wearing him down, and it's only getting worse after the holidays. He knows he's struggling, but doesn't know how to turn it to better. A Friday night in early January offers a surprise, though, in the form of Bucky asking to spend some time together.
Steve Rogers, former captain of the HMAS America, had been a rising star of the Royal Aerial Fleet until his airship was destroyed. He was pulled from the wreckage, the only survivor, and spent several weeks unconscious in a hospital bed while the world, and the Fleet, moved on without him. Now, he needs a new plan and a new career, both of which Nick Fury is willing to offer as part of his special SHIELD unit inside Scotland Yard.
But while Steve waits to begin his training, Fury has a small mystery he needs some help with. A masked man has been roaming the towns and villages in the south of England, stealing food and breaking into trains and museums without taking anything of value. A man with a metal arm. It's Steve's home ground, the place he grew up in, so he's the perfect choice to investigate Fury's problem. Isn't he?
